Steve McClaren Gives Update On Six Players

7:52 am, Saturday, January 16th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 19 Comments

Steve McClaren held his press conference yesterday and talked glowingly about Newcastle two signings this month – Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet.

Both were in a press conference of their own for the media yesterday and both are impressive players and we were particularly impressed yesterday with the coolness and confidence of Henri – who Steve has said is a leader and the type of player Newcastle needed.

Steve McClaren – gave his press conference yesterday

Jonjo is a character and he has excited Newcastle fans because he can offer something we haven’t had since Yohan Cabaye left the club – a central midfielder with lots of creative flair.

This is some of what Steve said in his press conference yesterday:

“Jonjo and Henri have trained a couple of days and we knew their quality.” “It’s about them bedding in and getting used to the team.”

“Shelvey is a winner, a good player who can score goals, make us play and get assists for the team.” “Henri is a leader, he’s the type of character we want in this team and we will see how quickly he adapts to the Premier League.”

“What we want to do is show why we bought them, look after them and make them better players.” “Both players are in the squad against West Ham and both have a chance of starting.”

“Siem sustained an eye injury.” “It looked very serious, he was in hospital and will be out for one or two weeks.”

“Papiss Cisse has had his operation and the recovery time for that is six to eight weeks but knowing Papiss, he’ll be looking to get back sooner than that.”

“Steven Taylor is back in training so that is a plus. Florian Thauvin will return to the squad – he is a Newcastle player.

It’s good that Steven is back in training and could be available for the first team squad maybe for next week for our tough game at Watford.

Really excited about the game today. I hope the lads kick on from the fight back on Tuesday night.

Fingers crossed for Steven Taylor, hope he makes it back to the bar of the last chance saloon without getting another injury. When he actually got back in the side the last time he looked pretty good until he broke down yet again. Very proud to have Geordie lads in and around the squad if they show equal ability to the multitude of unknown continental cheap imports clubs take a punt on,who often (obviously not always) disappear without a trace having stifled our homegrown talent. Taylor is our former England U21 captain who in my opinion was destined for great things, just his body let him down at key stages. Howay Tayls!

Morning Ron…by the next match conference Saylor will be back in the treatment room 😉

Good words on Thauvin. It’s really become a bad habit of discarding players like they are worn out pants.

…and at the same time we are stuck with the likes of Obertan, Cisse, Saylor, Willo, Marv, Bigi and Gouf.

Saylor back in training, once fit we’ll get a couple of games out of him before he picks up his next injury and is out for another few months.
What’s the point of keeping him on the pay roll?

His contract is up soon. If he doesn’t establish his fitness this time you will get your wish…

Sing, I remember Tayls at the U21 championships, think we got to the semi’s, he got injured just before full time, all three subs had been made and the game went to extra time, he played on injured and took and scored a penalty in the shootout. Thats the kind of commitment I love from players.
On the flip side he is a rash, he always drops too deep, usually to the goal line and plays every opposing player onside.
Theres certainly upsides and downsides with Saylor

Yeah remember it well. My heart was jumping outa my chest with pride. But also recall some humorous / cringeworthy moments, like the sniper shot hand ball tiring to avoid a penalty decision, forget who it was against. And of course the daft shenanigans trying to insight keepers at edge of the box free kicks 🙂

    Sutty , sorry…

Ste Taylor would have been offered a new contract by now as his contract ends in the summer. Finally expect him Marvs and Obershocker to make way for new players come summer…. Providing we are still in the Pl

The plethera of idiocy on the last thread only reinforces what an stupid old fart you are.

And with regard to my location here in Australia, what relevance is that? You show yourself up to be even more of a moron with that comment.

    You jog on, old man

SUTTY…that’s the kind of commitment that ruins careers mate!

For the people giving grief to SDJ, I dont think its a coincidence that he has started three games and we got two wins and a draw from those, he got dropped and we haven’t won one since.
He retains the ball well in advanced areas and has good ability to bring others into play. Yes he missed an incredible sitter but Wijnaldum has missed a few, do you want to send him back to Holland?
I would prefer him in the team to Perez at the moment, thats for sure. I get the feeling he thought he might be off to a “bigger” club this window
I do think SDJ is going to find it hard to get in the team now that we have Shelvey, think Perez will go left and Wijnaldum in the no.10

Taylor used to be my favoufite player, was proud as punch of him. Excellent prospect, totally committed and I thought the England captain of the future. After his first injury you think poor guy can and does happen to everybody. Second long term injury you’re thinking how unlucky is that. Third, something is not right with this kid. Fourth, this guy needs a bionic skeletal frame made up. Fifth. Get rid, sympathy for him as it’s not his fault, but he’s made a bloody good living and now it’s time to move on, wouldn’t even want him on a pay as you play deal, can’t see any point in that.

Sing, think the sniper one was against Villa!
Has the same feeling with the U21 game, was such a courageous effort and you could see it inspiring the team around him. Shame we lost in the end anyway like!

magscar- I am a regular reader of the blog. For what it’s worth I have only ever posted as Ian Toon. Ed , posted a few years ago an avoidance of doubt message that I was only posting under the aforementioned name. I was left alone for some time then the dirty tricks campaign marshalled by the same few posters started up again.
You’re the most recent, of numerous posters accused of being me; many of whom appear to have stopped posting. Sack Llambias , Hail Wor Ashley and Jack Root were the most recent but I am not keeping a book- LOL.
I suspect you were singled out simply because you appear personable and are opinionated. It sounds bizarre in the extreme but a blog turf war; deluded but from my experience common practice. I rarely post these days as I am bored having to say the same things in my defence. The same people do the same dirty tricks and there are the same sniping high ground bandwagon types.
