Why Would Newcastle Go After This Swansea Player?

11:25 pm, Saturday, January 16th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 64 Comments

When Joe Kinnear was the Director of Football for about eight months at Newcastle from June of 2013, the player he almost signed 30 months ago was Bafe Gomis who was then at Lyon and Newcastle bid £9M for him.

But then when he became a free agent a year later Newcastle didn´t seem to go after him and he signed on at Swansea.

If we were willing to pay £9M for him in the summer of 2013, then why not sign him as a free agent one year later?

But maybe we are being unfair by bringing some logic into this?

Bafe Gomis – now at Swansea

And of course by then Joe Kinnear had also been fired.

There´s news in the Mail today that Newcastle have added Bafetimbi Gomis as a potential striker target this month for a player who is now 30 years old.

Bafe has a £7M release clause in his contract but isn´t he too old for Newcastle these days?

It seems that Swansea may be willing to sell some players this month and use the money to fund some incoming players they have identified to strengthen their squad.

But we would be very surprised if Newcastle do target Bafe Gomis this month.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

The news out of South Wales is that he can’t settle and wants a return to France

  • 2 croftus5678 // Jan 16, 2016 at 11:36 PM

gomis linked up very well with shelvey but imo he’s way too old and misses way to many easy chances and we have enough of that all ready.

  • 3 Munster Mag // Jan 16, 2016 at 11:38 PM

Trust munster mag’s player judgement. I havent got any wrong for nufc so far. saivet will be good. Pity we didnt get afobe or austin ( at that price)

  • 4 SPRINGY // Jan 16, 2016 at 11:40 PM

non starter….to old now i believe

  • 5 NoahJ // Jan 16, 2016 at 11:41 PM

he gets a lot of stick from swansea fans; apparently he’ll score a goal every game for five games, then won’t score for 20 games.

We already have inconsistent strikers, who are better and younger

  • 6 toon22 // Jan 16, 2016 at 11:44 PM

If they are looking to spend big imho after all the money wasted theyshould buy from within the prem.
Bonney from City comes to mind.

  • 7 magpiesi // Jan 16, 2016 at 11:45 PM

He’s 30 no chance unless it’s a give away. Or it could be ayew for 7m as his agent has reportedly been offering him around since monk got sacked to drive up interest.

  • 8 geordie157 // Jan 16, 2016 at 11:45 PM

    Gomis no thanks!

Wonder if the warmer weather in the south is helping Gosling stay fit, good to see him playing regularly again and doing fairly well.

Seems that Townsend will sign early next week.

We do need a striker….if Chelsea sign pato just buy Remy. Otherwise berahino.

With dummett injured does a left back become a bigger priority?

  • 9 geordie157 // Jan 16, 2016 at 11:46 PM

Benteke if klopp doesn’t want him.

  • 10 Jib // Jan 16, 2016 at 11:57 PM

I’m watching the match again on SNF match choice and Shelvey defo elbowed Valencia in the mush.

  • 11 croftus5678 // Jan 16, 2016 at 11:59 PM

    @toon and geordie

agree with both but i feel neither would take that huge pay cut needed to join us 🙁

peter crouch may be an option though 😉

  • 12 toon kk // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:02 AM

Yep watching it to, bit of a naughty elbow.
His passing is spot on though, someone we need.

  • 13 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:07 AM

Aye Colback is decent in midfield and is also a good fit to play with Shelvey. The other plus point is that he is a left footer, which helps give the team balance.

  • 14 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:11 AM

Kirchoff anyone? That was a horror show. I can’t remember a worse debut since George Weah’s cousin at Southampton. He even looked as if he couldn’t be arsed.

  • 15 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:19 AM

Ali Dia had been playing for Blyth Spartans. Told Souness he was an international.

  • 16 Belfast // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:29 AM

That was some block he made for the spurs goal really committed lol

  • 17 Jib // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:47 AM

Paul Clement dropped his top scorer Chris Martin for Derby’s clash with Birmingham City (they lost to the Brummies 0- 3 at home ).

I wonder if McLaren had been on the phone to his old striker ?

  • 18 rowly // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:49 AM

Today was the best performance since the 3-1 against west brom the season we finished 5th! Shelvey was the missing piece in the jigsaw, someone to pass the ball forward to our excellent attacking players! I’m not too fussed about a new striker to be honest (as long as mitro stays fit) I think he will start scoring soon and his hold up play is so important to our game. He was immense today. I would get a striker for the bench as Perez and cisse can’t do what he does and we would struggle if he gets injured. I think we need a left winger in the mould of sissoko (Townsend) but I wish we got sako in front of palace in the summer. We also need another CB as back up be cause mbemba and collo are playing well together but collo is bound to pick an injury as soon as the window slams shut!

  • 19 Mister Tuff // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:54 AM

Blog Google Goon – I see you’ve just posted that Shelvey elbowed Valencia. How can you post such a thing when just the other day you were arguing that Shelvey did not have an attitude problem.
I recall I had to put you straight (yet again) as to what the correct assessment was.

I expect you’ve had a busy day – shopping -at your local SD shop at the Bridges Shopping Centre in Sunderland getting a free SD Jacket to match your red and white shell suit.

  • 20 Magpie Season // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:56 AM

If we get another striker someone will have to leave b/c then we will have too many, but who?

    2. Mitrovic
    3. Cisse
    4. Riviere
    5. Toney

Thinking either Riviere will be sold or Toney will be loaned out.

  • 21 Munster Mag // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:56 AM

Blackley, i have never seen worse. Kirchoff’s demeanor and body language were disgraceful. And funny!

  • 22 Magpie Season // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:57 AM

Anyone know if Shelvey will face restrospective action for his elbow on Valencia?

Reminds me of Jedinak last year for Palace.

  • 23 Munster Mag // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:57 AM

Id love the current 3 to go down. Swansea chairman is a tit

  • 24 Mister Tuff // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:02 AM

If the officials did not witness the actual incident at the time they can take retrospective action – could be a ban of at least three games for violent conduct.

I thought the refs later intervention, was as Belfast suggested in respect of the handbags afterwards and not the original incident.

  • 25 brklyngeordie // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:10 AM

Few thoughts after today’s game didn’t want to post right away cause you can never keep up w/ Ed’s rapid posts after a game..

Team played really well except Sissoko I really try pulling for him but he really is not that special and feel Townsend could easily replace him, if we can get anywhere near 15M for him take it asap and help fund the Townsend move and some of the Lacazette bid and if not him another ST..

Shelvey was exactly the player I thought he would be excellent player has excellent understanding of game and knew how to play w/ teammates as if he has been here forever..His passing range is what has been lacking from our cm since forever and knows how to unlock a defense with killer passes .. My favorite thing he did though was get into Perez and Sissoko who both at times plays a little to much with head down when ball is at feet out wide this lad is a BOSS and def one who I believe will be captain in what hopefully will be long career in the Black and White..

Gini is def our No.10 and is such a good player so happy we got him another leader and special motor on the lad..

Last thing have been saying before we got Shelvey and we’re looking thin at LB that I always thought Colback should be given a look there could be his calling imo especially the way we try to maintain possession these days just need to make sure to do the right thing every once in a while and boot it up or out of play..

Enjoy the win was a great day and feel their will be more to come actually starting to have some hope in the lads and want to secure safety asap and build for what could be exciting season next year

  • 26 Munster Mag // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:13 AM

Tuff i think he will be fine. We was a fret today by the way ( unlike palace)

  • 27 Mister Tuff // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:24 AM

Munster -not so sure about that -for years I think there has been a bit of an anti NUFC mentallity at the FA.
Could be back into the mire if he gets a ban.

Hope Lyon -flog Lacazette to us – he has said he may consider the PL in the summer but Lyon are short of cash – new stadium etc. Their president might be tempted with a large bag of loot from Mr Tubbs.
With the reported value being 25 million – this would cancel out King “Superinjuntion” Percy getting involved.
Never seen the Palace result today -how did they do – cough!

  • 29 ilovetoon8788 // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:59 AM

Gini is one of the most incredible athlete we ever bad. He’s a complete footballer in the no.10 role . he holds the ball up ans links our attacks, he’s strong in the air, he has quick feet, he has pace and power and intelligence. If he can continue this feat next season than he’s destined to be one of the best players in the world .

    Enjoy him while he’s here.

expat – you were upsetting my mate Tudor this morning. Would I be right in thinking you’ve been on the bevvy again and your missus banned you to the huffy bed.
She sent me an email the other day about your antics causing her grief – whats this about getting pissed and ringing the fire brigade to attend a bush fire when the smoke was from your neighbours barby.
She is also getting sick of you going down the beach wearing your Steve Irwin bush gear and telling tourists about your croc hunting and great white wrangling in order to stiff them for drinks.
Is it right you were standing in the shallows when somebody shouted shark and you were off like a shot up the beach – but the shark turned out to be a young lad wearing a plastic shark fin.
You need to dry yourself out.

  • 33 U.S Magpie // Jan 17, 2016 at 2:48 AM

I’m stilled a little pissed off that Newcastle, that they sat with there dicks in there hands and we didn’t pick up Austin for 5 Million. Sorry but he is 100% worth the Gamble for 5 Mill. We blow Millions on Players with no Prem Exp, look at Shelvey 100% worth the purchase with Prem Exp.

  • 34 p // Jan 17, 2016 at 3:29 AM

we don’t know that Austin wanted to come.

Besides, with dummett and mbabu out injured, I think a left back should be pretty high on the list of targets.

  • 35 JDdubai // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:13 AM

On Lacazette, you would think that after what he said last week that we wouldnt have bothered bidding for him unless we had some kind of encouragement from his people.

Or its sunday and theres no real transfers to report.

On yesterday, Wini was outstanding, Toonbrother anonymous though was looking forward to see how he would turn Mbemba’s mistake onto Coloccini.

Good to see a performance like that, just need someone to score some goals.

  • 36 ilovetoon8788 // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:33 AM

Newcastle attempted 23 shots (inc. blocked) in this match; their highest tally in a single Premier League match this season and the most that they have had in a PL game since September 2014.

  • 37 Termijn // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:49 AM

Not to fussed we didnt get Austin, he probably didnt want to come anyway. I dont think we create enough chances for someone like him anyway and I feel he’s too similar to Mitrovic/Cisse. A fast pacy striker is what we need, like Berahino/Lacazette.

  • 38 will die for the toon army // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:35 AM

Lacazete is missing in our team a guy who can score goals.

Thauvin to go back to France. Keep De Jong and keep him fit.

Sell Cisse, Rivere is good back up. We need a squad to compete.

    GK: Krul, Elliott, Darlow
    RB: Janmatt, Mbabu
    LB: Willems, Haidara
CB: Mbemba, Koulibaly, Colo, Dummett, Lasceles
    CM: Shelvey, Colback, Saviet, Anita
    WF: Sissoko, Perez, Aarons, Townsend
    CAM: Wijnaldum, De Jong
    CF: Lacazete, Mitrovic, Rivere, Toney

Anyway central heating should kick in soon might stir myself to watch this mornings MOTD repeat after last night’s treat. Didn’t even get any sensationalism over Shelvey as I had expected but haven’t seen SKY pundits reaction yet.

  • 54 topmanz // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:42 AM

Just get Townsend in and sissoko out. The team play will transform with shelvey pulling the strings.

  • 55 Douglas // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:04 AM

If Selvey is McClarens man, does this mean he will have more say in transferes in future – and Carr less. Probably a good thing.

Still cant understand not getting Austin in. Did we screw up? Seems like it. (We scredwed up the possible Ali deal).

Is now the transfer window to do our “summer business”? Fees will only go up in the

  • 56 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:19 AM

Sissoko is critical to our play, 75% of our attacks go down the right, that is because of him. I thought he did well yesterday, his positioning and movement was very good, he just didn’t quite have the right control at critical times, his effort and application were top notch though.

  • 57 will die for the toon army // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:20 AM

    Get Townsend in. Loan Thauvin.

  • 58 will die for the toon army // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:23 AM

Lacazzete no go we need english players homegrown.

Is Mbabu home grown. He came wen he was 17.

  • 59 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:25 AM

Douglas, we just weren’t interested and rightly so. He’s a passenger in most games, like Cisse when he’s really out if form. If you couldn’t see the benefit of a striker being fully involved it team play yesterday then you probably never will. Austin wont do this, cant do it. People have an impression of him as a hold up striker because he’s a fairly big unit but thats not his game.
Chris Martin from Derby would do for me as back up to Mitro, they play in.a similar way.

  • 60 The overrated Frenchman // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:27 AM

I know he’s frustrating, and I’ve knocked him too at times, but Sissoko has been good lately. More consistent I think. I’d be disappointed if Townsend is lined up as his replacement.

  • 61 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:31 AM

Still dont get the Townsend love in. People only seem to want to “get in” players we have been linked with. Theres a whole world of footballers out there.
El Ghazi from Ajax would be my choice for a winger, available for around £8 mill apparently, which is a frickin steal.
To anyone saying “he’s not PL proven”, Townsend has played in the PL and proven to be crap just like his idol Obertan.

  • 62 will die for the toon army // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:36 AM

If you dont realise we have a home grown problem on our azzes.

Taylor & Willo will be leaving soon we have to replace them with English men and i believe our next 2 signings should b English if we r gettting foreign CB and LB.

  • 63 OneAlanShearer // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:44 AM

We need defensive cover. Willems or jonas hector for me.

We need a left winger. I’d say townsend has the pace wd need and may contain better for us than spurs.

We need a top strikerlacazette fits the bill.

  • 64 Jack Root // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:25 AM

If you read the last paragraph you will understand why we didn’t sign Gomis..

    200Jack Root // Jan 14, 2016 at 9:26 PM

Financial Fair Play has and does affect us!
It was introduced in August 2013. One of the key areas that has been influential in buying players is the FFP regulations regarding Premier League wage bills. Basically, any club in the league with a wage bill of more than £52 million can only increase their wage bill by £4 million per year for the next 3 years. In our case additional corporate money can be used- the Wonga deal- but only by the amount added on top of a current deal and spread out over the terms of the current contract ( wef 8/2013) . What it means for NUFC is they can only actually increase their wage bill from somewhere between £80k-£100k per week for the 3 years until 8/2016.
Looking back. Departures of for example Perch, Harper and Simpson totalling around £70k per week enabled us to sign Remy on between £70-£80k per week. Following its introduction a number of clubs played a waiting game including us. Note that transfer fees aren’t/ weren’t taken into consideration just wages.
At the time clubs that did do a lot of trading got their top earners off their wage bill . This explains the mackems buying and selling an
entire squad. It appears that they actually decreased their wage bill in the process. Villa got rid of Richard Dunne and Darrent Bent’s entire wage bill In order to do new business. We didn’t have that but our top earners were the likes of Coloccini, Yanga-Mbiwa and Sissoko. It explains one of the reasons Sissoko and Gouffran were brought in 6 months early as other signings may not have been possible at all. Those two were initially signed on pre contract deals to come into force in the next window. A mix of FFP and our situation I am sure played a part in those 2 deals.
Swansea, Southampton, Norwich, the promoted teams were able to use the TV money much more freely as they could get their wage bill up to £52 million per year and actually afford to do so. It’s also allowed promoted clubs subsequently to play catch up and compete unlike in previous times – that was the Premier League’s intention and it has worked.
Maybe it explains the 2013 pre season at Newcastle. The Kinnear appointment made no sense. Our wage bill was at that time one of the largest below the top 5 clubs in the league and that is what arguably restricted transfer activity.
Think on this, in my opinion we had pretty much done a deal for Gomis when Dan Gosling came back from Crystal Palace. He was on £30k per week wages and that deal fell through.
    It’s not a conspiracy theory Mag 52’.
