    Ashley Out!

  • 2 Tsunki // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:27 PM

From previous article – Jonjo Wijnaldum? He’s some player, Ed! 🙂

  • 3 sparky55 // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:29 PM

Can anyone tell me Perez’s new years surprise he allegedly had in stall for us…what the hell was that all about?????

  • 4 Thump // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:30 PM

Ed, a man who has worked in business since he put down his goalkeeping gloves, believes Gini is worth £40m after just 23 appearances.

    Just saying.

He is pregnant with Tiote or P45s baby

  • 6 Thump // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:31 PM

@sparky55: I think it was the competition to win his match shirt or something.

Tsunki, Jonjo Wijnaldum is awesome he can send a 67 yard pass and score from it lol

  • 8 Ron Knee // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:33 PM

The ad at the top of my page says: Stroke City – Arsenal!

  • 9 toonking // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:34 PM

i’ve already a great supporter of leicester city this year and hoping they win the title, if chelsea get relegated the very same time the shock will be like that of winning the lottery and I have a big doubt as to weather it will happen ever again

  • 10 switch365 // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:35 PM

Pato looks like the kind of player Boro would sign and he’d end up turning back into a world beater.
Wonder if he’s worth a risk

  • 11 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:35 PM

I have an ad blocker so can’t see it but Stroke City sound a good team….. down one side

  • 12 sparky55 // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:37 PM

Thump’s answer is probably nearer the truth but catchy’s the best by far.

really dunno…he tweeted a message just before new year that he had some sort of gift for us all and I think someone suggested its a mate from Spain coming to join us, but if it’s just a shirt hey ho!

Lee Ryder reckons Rolando Aarons & Thauvin will go out on loan if we get Townsend

  • 18 croftus5678 // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:44 PM

perez still has a lot to learn but he is learning very quick and always tries his hardest.

mitrovic is growing in confidence he was great and does a lot of very effective important things that go un noticed.

have you asked pardew out for dinner and work along side him to see the current sh1t of palace. you’ll get the best idea of this puppet and his current club why not buy a season ticket?

  • 20 Jail for Ashley // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:46 PM

Absolutely delighted with the three points yesterday but just as importantly that first half display made us look like league champions, what a fcukin difference it makes by showing a bit of ambition.
As for Jib naming usual suspects who didn’t post after the win, my name not included as he knows I’m on holiday. Jibberish forfeited his right to question any fans, toonbotherer excepted integrity the day he posted that KK’s entertainers were the worst thing that ever happened to us !

Evening lads. Does anyone know if we have moved anyone one just yet?

Heard some disturbing news earlier today. Belfast proclaimed he wanted to share photos of him in Lonsdale boxers. What a disturbing images!

Ed…you need to modify Belfast from now on.

  • 23 Rotonda heights // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:50 PM

amazing arsenal have cazorla, sanchis, coquellin all missing and are still there or thereabouts.

  • 25 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:52 PM

Croftus – on Mitro, some of the stuff he does is great and as you say, unnoticed. He did a 20 yard chest flick to set Sissoko away in the first few minutes yesterday. That was every bit as skillful and difficult to pull off as Shelveys 60 yard punt (loved that too though!)

  • 26 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:52 PM

Would be a wise move to loan out Aarons even for a month so he gets a full 90 minutes every week then he could come back and fight for his place ! He will end up getting injured again if we dropped him straight back into the team at premiership level same with De Jong he should have been loaned out ages ago !

Thauvin should be made to man up and actually battle for the shirt but if Mclaren has decided he is not good enough and he would prefer Townsend and will play him if he signs then it would be the right move I suppose

  • 27 Thump // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:52 PM

Yeah, I retract my statement in favour of catchys.

  • 28 lesh // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:53 PM

if william is worth 40M at chelsea wijni can not be far behind. His change of pace, control and body swerve are world class.

  • 30 toonking // Jan 17, 2016 at 4:54 PM

This current arsenal side look as though they’ll be defeated, I thought it was just the pulis stoke which give them nightmares but watching this match you could say any away game to stoke is a nightmare.

you always say we have a weak squad but i think this is one of the best we’ve had in years. MBemba, shelvey, wijni, Mitro, Perez, sissoko, etc etc are looking very good for our future.

  • 34 bladeuser // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:01 PM

    SHEEP ? Out

  • 35 Our Toon // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:02 PM

Shelvey was very good in the first half and non existent in the 2nd, thought we played well though with Gini at the centre of all things good. I hope going forward Shelvey doesn’t keep smashing it from 30 yards plus into row Z…..especially when we are trying to hold on for a win… that point possession was the most important thing!! Hopefully he amd we kick on from here next week

Overall good debut but think alot have got a wee bit carried away with voting him as MOTM

  • 36 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:03 PM

If Aarons is to be loaned out it should be to a less physical league in warmer climate 😀

Loaning out Thauvin is just poor business!

  • 37 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:06 PM

Great win yesterday and its nice to see us dominate a team for once, especially in the first half .

IMO we still need a PL proven striker(Remy/Berahino) as goals win you games at the end of the day, and although I believe Mitrovic will be brilliant player for us in the long run we need results ASAP .

Also Is anyone wlse worried we are not looking at defenders ? . Our defensive record is bad enough as it is, and an injury to M’bemba would be a nightmare . Collo has been great lately but I would still bring in another CB to keep him on his toes and an upgrade on Dummet (Willems) is a must as well .

  • 38 Jack Root // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:06 PM

You claim not to understand what I meant by “You can’t just look at one transaction in isolation”. Robbie Keane was bought in 2002 by Spurs for £ 7 million. Subsequently sold to Liverpool for £ 20.3 million in 2007 and bought back for around £ 19 million two years later.
Ramos who had been sacked by Levy in October 2008 issued a statement in January 2009 to refute claims by Uk press over the sale of Keane and Berbatov. Ramos said that Levy had sold both players for purely football reasons. Both players wanted to change clubs because they wanted to play Champions League Football.
He left Spurs after periods on loan at West Ham and Aston Villa to play North American Soccer(!!). Levy whilst seeing football as a business could well have viewed Keane as a good servant to his football club over the years given that he initially cost them £7 million in 2002.
Hope you now see the point I was making. It’s probably been me banging on too much on the subject FFP which caused the confusion.
FFP was introduced in August 2013 and has nothing to do with this. The point about wages was in the context of my earlier post on FFP.

  • 39 Thump // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:09 PM

@Rotonda: You kind of gave the reason in that comment, though – Willian is at Chelsea, a club who can command those fees because their bank is practically bursting anyway. Gini is at Newcastle, where even £20m is an attractive sum for one of our star players.

  • 42 Jack Root // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:15 PM

Your point about Sissoko’s debut game against Chelsea and Shelvey’s debut showing yesterday. It was a very good start but nothing more. We have two consecutive away games which will be a good test .

how much did we get for Carrol 5 years ago
    36M wasn’t it.

  • 44 welshgeordie9 // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:19 PM

Would rather us play Aarons and marveaux than sign Townsend, he’s no better than those two so why waste £14 million on him when we could use that to get a decent forward in.

  • 45 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:20 PM

it turns out Selling Carroll for £35 mil was a steal, unusual that a scouser gets robbed…… usually the other way round lol

  • 46 welshgeordie9 // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:20 PM

And it wouldn’t be 3 steps back if we sold Gini, more like 20 the way he’s been playing, quality player.

What I hate about Arsenal the most is every time they lose the ball they shout for the foul they do it every game especially against us !!

No mate you just got tackled and lost the ball its not a foul !!

  • 53 SPRINGY // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:26 PM

was expecting a bit more from stoke after all the hype about them tbh

  • 54 toonking // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:29 PM

jamaats consistent failure to get back in time and defend and dummetts consistent failure to get forward might have diverted the attention away from the consideration of a CB, we all see mbemba as a great arrival and looking at the way our fullbacks are we’ve started turning attention towards the issue of our fullbacks.

CBs themselves aren’t the biggest importance where attack is concerned and as far as most are concerned we’re consistently missing chances and poor creatively in CM and wide left.

Where defence comes in a CB is a must but for now attack is more concerning and without win I ‘d say we’d be worse of than villa.

  • 55 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:30 PM

Springy, their new signings havent done that much all season really, Affelay for example has no goals and just one assist, he’d have been hounded out of the Toon by now!

  • 56 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:41 PM

    @ King

I would definitely prioritise a proven PL goalscorer above all else, and Remy or Berahino seem like the only options now Austin has joined Southampton . Which I find strange as Pelle is the all round better player IMO .

I just think relying on a young lad in his debut season to keep us in the promised land of the PL especially with the money it garners a huge gamble . All for the sake of £ 15-20 million

On the defence I just find all our attacks come down the right and it is making us one dimensional . All Dummet seems to do when he gets the ball is chip it forward and more often than not give away possession. He is also never really in position to deliver any crosses for Mitrovic from that left side .

Also I feel Collo will revert back to his usual self once we get another hammering . If we bring in a top CB as back up he knows he can’t drop his game and it may bring out the best in him .

  • 57 Jack Root // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:41 PM

There’s history between the two. Arsenal fans tend to mention Stoke in a mocking way as their complete antithesis.
We could do with Shawcross and Pieters. We battered them and Butland came to prominence almost overnight. He and Shaqiri have been outstanding.
After our showing everything looks mediocre.

  • 58 toonking // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:42 PM

this game has got 0-0 written all over it crap passes by both teams and neither of them putting the counter attack to good use.

  • 59 brklyngeordie // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:51 PM

Have wondered the same thing even tweeted Ayoze about it but no reply and if you check his twitter he has deleted the tweet. I thought it was going to be contract extension but who knows head might have been spun by the Spurs links

Why anyone here would not welcome Townsend is beyond me we havent had a good winger in ages am still hopeful Aarons will become 1 but who knows this season was clearly a step back and dont think Sammy has turned any heads in Cardiff and Thauvin has not been given a proper chance IMO

  • 60 brklyngeordie // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:52 PM

By the way has Tiote officially been moved on yet?

  • 61 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:54 PM

    @ brklyngeordie

I don’t think that its the case of not wanting Townsend, its just not at the expense of a striker we could spend the reported £12 million on .

  • 62 Thump // Jan 17, 2016 at 5:55 PM

@Rotonda: Different case, I think. He was English and we had Dogleash with money! haha

  • 63 angelswithdirtyfaces // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:05 PM

I wonder if we will buy a astriker at all this window.

The main problem has been lack of service.
I believe Mitro, who has a record of scoring for fun throughout his career only needs someting a bit more frequent to latch on to – like a Townsend cross or ten. We are sorted down the middle anyway if yesterday is to be the model.
Better service means Mitro scoring more.

If Mitro is injured then maybe Riviere is impressing in pracrtice or even Gouffran might be brought in – ST is in his CV somewhere I think.
We are only going to play one striker anyway.

It doesn’t matter if most of our goals come from the mid 3 – with whoever is in the central role – faux 9 / No 10 / ACM getting first dibs – Wini and Perez between them.

  • 64 brklyngeordie // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:06 PM

    Big Papa Cisse
I understand that respect that if thats the case but most seem to keep saying he is crap which i dont get.

Im still upset we didnt get Shaqiri for 12-14 and spent on Thauvin that was a no brainer its those decisions that make me worry about Carr, but hey ask Man U who would they have rather had Depay for 30 or Gini for 16 hahaha thank God they went for Depay so shows all clubs make mistakes some bigger then others just hurts some more cause cant splash the cash as much as some and if we miss on one might make us hesitate the next time

  • 65 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:06 PM

Jack, aye the history is all from THAT tackle by Shawcross.

    Shaqiri – 2 goals, 3 assists
    Perez – 5 goals, 2 assists

Butland I’d agree has been good

Theres a lot of players who look awesome in highlight clips but when you watch them week in week out they are basically deceiving fans of other clubs into thinking they are good. Our mate Townsend falls into that category too.

  • 66 toonking // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:06 PM

looking at the rest of our fixture list in in comparison to the rest I do have some belief in us being able to survive with the squad as it is but an injury to wijnaldum and that story changes all together.

Week in week out mitrovic is getting more and more pressure which as a youngster is making these goal scoring chances more and more likely to be missed, strikers are known to take the longest time only the world class would score goals at his age.

Remy is the last thing i’d want to see arrive back, he’s twice turned us down and now he knows big teams see him as sub at best he’ll not be as bothered about consistent decent performances. we should have got austin in last summer but wasted the chance and it’s much harder to get that XP striker now, being unhappy at southampton pelle could be brought in but nobody and we’ll be pray wini remains fully fit.

  • 67 Rotonda heights // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:10 PM

think it’s more a case of why are spurs so keen to sell. i think pochettino is a pretty good judge

  • 68 angelswithdirtyfaces // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:10 PM

Before we get too excited about Perez, and he is still a developing player He has five goals. Dan Gosling – a Toon reject, has 4. Argument is that Dan won’t get any better but Perez will. If we put too much pressure on him, and he feels he ain’t meeting expectations he’ll go and score 15 a season elsewhere. He needs nurturing not pressurising at his age as the next big thing

  • 69 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:12 PM

Townsend has played 232 minutes of football for Spurs this year. In that time he has had 1 solitary cross. Dont expect him to be pinging them onto Mitro’s forehead 10 times a game.

  • 70 toonking // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:14 PM

    FT 0-0

watching this game I can see leicester managing to finish above them if they can get the wins against stoke and liverpool, city will be challenging and might be hard to finish above now that city have got some players returning.

  • 71 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:15 PM

Angels, I was just making a comparison. I don’t think that any Toon fan would class Perez as being outstanding this season but others looking in and only seeing clips may well do, just like some people think Shaq has been magnificent when he hasn’t done that much in reality

  • 72 Hail Wor Ashley // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:17 PM

Gotta laugh at the service excuse for Mitro. Demba Ba would have at least 5 more goals and we’d have a handful more points, given the chances Mitro has spurned.

Naturally I want him to suddenly become a lethal ST, but I just don’t see it in him. Anything first time his technique and body position, due to a lack of agility, are usually all wrong. Shearer being brought back in tot he club to work 1 on 1 with him would be great, but will never happen. Perez is definitely a better finisher, he really does rarely get a chance and he more often than not takes them, even half-chances he has a good strike rate. If only we could combine them in to a single player.

  • 73 Belfast // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:30 PM

    Just for you Jesper.

  • 74 defenders needed // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:34 PM

Hail wor Ashley I disagree with you I think he is just struggling with the step up to the premier league and the pressure of playing in the league, I think next season he will do a vardy and everything will click on to place, he proved he can score goals at his last club only its a lot faster at his new club. He will become good I think

  • 75 Dingo†® // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:50 PM

    On Mitro:

I for one really rate this kid. I keep reading folk on here banging on about how he needs to score more and that we need a proven striker bla bla bla. He needs service. If you look at his goals for Anderlecht they are taken in the penalty area. Not only that he made the run to meet the ball in the box, not pick it up 20 yrds outside run in and score like he has to here. More over he loves heading. Have a look for yourself.

Same folk saying that Townsend is crocked and/or cack & not worth the money.

bollocks to ya. may egg be on your faces

  • 76 welshgeordie9 // Jan 17, 2016 at 6:59 PM

I think it will be you with the egg on your face, personally I don’t think he will be coming here, Spurs want £14 million and I don’t think the club wants to pay that.

  • 77 welshgeordie9 // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:02 PM

  • 79 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:03 PM

I just wonder if we are better off going for a pacey striker as that seems to be the way the Premier League is these days with players like Vardy being very effective especially away from home .

Perez isn’t exactly slow, but Cisse and Mitrovic aren’t blessed with pace . I can only imagine what Aubameyang would have done in this league if we were supposedly in for him a few years ago .

Chancel, watched that “best of Andros” vid earlier. You might notice that it covers everything good he did over a period of three years. In the whole montage there was one cross from the left wing and even that was put in with too much loft and the striker couldnt get a decent head on it. He’s just not the kind of winger we need

  • 90 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:18 PM

East stand, as a man I think he was top drawer, as a player not much in the end, again think he was Pardewed to a good extent though. His first game when he tore into Man U was awesome and he was excellent when we were in the championship.
Not sure of the comparison to Townsend though?

People reading too much in to stats to get their arguments across. Not having a go but don’t rely just on stats to judge a player.

Shelvey 18 premier league appearances, 1 goal, 2 assists, including yesterday. He more or less created both goals yesterday but his stats won’t change.

I don’t know what bellamys stats were for us but I bet they didn’t make great reading for an out and out striker but he was amazing for us.

  • 96 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:25 PM

My point about guti is that he worked hard but never got many assists and hardly any goals for a winger but we all loved him, if Townsend comes I will be behind that choice as should every fan when he pulls that shirt on to many writing him off he has a lot to prove and I think we could do with him.

  • 97 Slank // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:30 PM

    Big Pappa Cissé @ 79

I don’t think we need a pacey striker.

You have to look at the structure of the current team. McClaren favours 4-2-3-1 where the three in midfield are all pacey individuals. They more than make up for a lack of a pacey striker in my opinion.

They don’t have the attributes that Mitrovic has. Similarly Mitrovic doesn’t have the attributes that they have. Late in the second half Mitrovic was holding up the ball whilst under pressure to halt the West Ham forward momentum and enable our players to regroup and move forward.

Shearer and Belamy worked well together but it was a different team with different strengths and weaknesses to the current team. There could not be a like for like comparison.

I don’t see McClaren changing the 4-2-3-1 shape of his team to accommodate two strikers especially now he has Shelvey that allows Gini a free role to which he is so good at.

  • 98 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:34 PM

Spurs fans biggest gripe with Townsend is that when he looses the ball (which is frequent) he doesn’t bother tracking back. Guti was the exact opposite, he became the worlds first defensive winger, he spent a lot of his time babysitting the LB spot for Enrique and then Santon. Totally different players
Heres a couple of comments from Spurs fans about him leaving

He is so much like Lennon – fantastic pace and control but the delivery of the final ball remains frustratingly inconsistent

Andros simply did not work hard enough to show he can defend as well as attack. He did not stop the “gaffes ” that is dribbling ,loosing ball but not tracking back to retrieve(Lamela,Onamah, Lennon,dele-Alli all do it better)

  • 99 Our Toon // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:35 PM

25m wouldn’t be a waste on a talent like Lacazette, Carroll is premiership proven 25m on him would be a waste. Lacazette wouldn’t join us anyway

If you are good enough you will make the step up, don’t forget the best players in the prem now were once unproven in this league.

  • 100 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:39 PM

A player can change, the wingers we are playing now lose the ball a lot especially sissoko his dribbling is shocking you know Theres a heavy touch coming and he runs into trouble a lot, Townsend might need coached a bit more than he was getting at Spurs they used to just go out and attack.

  • 101 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:40 PM

    @ Slank

Problem is our current set up doesn’t have any out and out wingers and one of Mitrovic’s best assets is his aerial ability .

Sissoko does a decent job on the right but he is hardly banging in crosses every game . Then you have Perez on the other side and he is more of an inside forward . Dummet barely gets forward so you have Janmaat as our only frequent crosser of the ball .

If we were to buy another winger and hope Aarons can stay fit then fair enough, Mitrovic would be one of the first names in my team . However as it stands currently I would rather Remy (despite him mugging us off) as our main striker with Mitrovic as back up .

  • 102 toon22 // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:40 PM

Townsend obviously has his faults but where are we going to get an English winger who can play on either wing?
Did he ever play on the left for Spurs?
Do people actually think he will be worse than the recent crop of French dross we usually get,we need more English players.

  • 103 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:42 PM

my final thought on townsend if the manager wants him then get him McLaren knows his budget he also has a long contract to lose is not better to pay 12 mill for a player the manager wants than 12mill on one he doesn’t want and wont play

  • 105 toon22 // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:45 PM

After Jonjo i would think they might go after out of favour English players and give them a game.
Ashley Cole as cover till end of season at LB ?

  • 106 Mister Tuff // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:47 PM

Whilst you can get arguments for and against on football blogs – – I checked out a couple of Spurs blogs and there seemed to be a consensus that Townsend was not up to much – greatest gripe was no end product. I would assume that means goals and or decent crosses. Anothder was that he cuts inside to get on his best foot for a shot – which normally ends up in row Z of the stands.
So really there is not a lot of evidence to suggest that he can CURRENTLY cut the mustard as they say.
I would be interested to hear from those who would like to sign him up – why – what evidence have you seen.

  • 107 Mister Tuff // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:50 PM

Mitrovich does need someone who can beat the fullback and get a hard flighted cross in for him to attack. As I’ve said before he has the power to get in front on the CB to get a bullet header away.

  • 108 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:51 PM

What people are also forgetting is that sometimes a change of scenery can be good for a player Townsend has lots of ability and is a local lad for Spurs which means he will be the first player to take stick off the fans if it goes wrong a bit like our fans with any local lads !!

People forget Newcastle are a huge club with an amazing stadium Townsend has been out on loan but he has never been on loan to a club like ours !! He could thrive in this environment a bit like Shelvey in that respect !!

The penny might just drop for both of them when they play for us as they wont be viewing us as a stepping stone like some of the mercenaries we have signed previously they actually want to play for us !!

  • 109 Slank // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:54 PM

    Big Pappa Cissé @ 101

Having an out and out winger who can cross the ball from the wing would benefit Mitrovic I agree but possibly not a pacey striker whose key attribute is his pace.

I maybe wrong but it seems that McClaren likes the flexibility and attacking options that Perez, Gini and Sissoko provide. If a winger like Townsend arrives it will most likely be for the left wing and to replace Perez as I cannot see Gini and Sissoko being dropped.

My iPad is about to pack up so I may not be able to reply.

  • 111 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:56 PM

Imagine Mitrovic playing for Palace and having Zaha and Bolasie either side of him ? .

If we were to play with two out and out wingers I would consider dropping Sissoko a little deeper alongside Shelvey and also bring in an attacking left back like Willems :

    That could work ? .

  • 112 hibbitt // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:58 PM

  • 113 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 17, 2016 at 7:59 PM

  • 115 toon kk // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:06 PM

I’ll hold my hands up and say, our last last couple of games we’ve actually looked like a good premier league side, something which has not been visible for a long time.
It was great to see real effort put in by everyone, Shelvey was brilliant in the first half especially. We still need a pacey proven striker imo.
Let’s hope we keep our focus and start climbing the league.
Yesterday was the first time I’ve actually thought we could have a chance of staying up.

  • 116 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:07 PM

    @ slank

    Your missing the point .

In our current set up WITHOUT natural wingers or an offensive LB I would rather we had a pacey striker, however if we were to sign some players that can put in decent crosses Mitrovic would thrive .

  • 117 toon22 // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:08 PM

If eitehr could be signed id be happy,my point being more to the fact we have been linked with another English player and imho we need more in the team.We could have spent 30 Million on a left winger insted of two French flops.

  • 118 jazzyp // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:11 PM

Gutti should have been no where near the first team for the last 2 seasons he was here.Yes he put in a shift but offered nothing. We even converted him into a left back for a time which proved disastrous.

I always think as long as a player has real quality with pace he’ll do well in the premier league, it may take a few games to settle, but like you say most of the top striker’s playing in the premier league come from abroad.

  • 120 jazzyp // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:14 PM

I agree mate Andros could rejuvenate his career in the north and definitely up for us bringing more English players to the club.
12mill is steep but that’s the problem in buying English !!

  • 122 toon kk // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:22 PM

I might be wrong but I think if Townsend comes he’ll be our final signing of this widow.
I do think we need a new striker but Mitrovic needs game time, he played great yesterday he just needs to get his shots on goal under control.

  • 123 sammypee // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:23 PM

Random question I know, but can Debuchy play at LB and if he can is he any good there?

If so could he not be worth a punt? If not then we could gamble with Jetro Willems?

Failing that what about José Enrique if we can’t get anyone else in for LB.

I would also love a CB to replace Collocini or at least give him competition as he is doing well now.

Strikers, I’ve heard we bid for Laccazette but don’t know how much of that is true. Also Gomis but I’m unsure he would be any better than Cisse. Would Be or Remy not be a better choice for the money and they are proven. Shame we didn’t bid for Austin but he might not have came anyway.

  • 124 toonking // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:24 PM

I agree with yourself about getting a striker with pace, in our days football is becoming a game about short passing and consistently finding space or defending those threats made by the opposition and breaking away on the counter, european leagues have been like this for years and now the premier league is starting.

  • 125 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:27 PM

    Toon kk,

Think you’re probably right that Townsend would be our last signing, such de ja vu with Thauvin. So given a straight choice this window, would you have

    1. Willems or another LB of your choice
    2. Berahino or another striker of your choice
    3. Townsend

  • 126 jazzyp // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:30 PM

I don’t know why we don’t put an offer in for Bony from Man city. I think he will be gone in the summer any way.
Him and Mitro would be an handful for any PL defence and would be in the price range we are looking at

  • 127 toon kk // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:33 PM

Say what you like about Macca, but I do think it has taken him time to get our players working as a team. He does get frustrated when he sees school boy errors and lack of commitment, but he’s definitely getting us to play football.

  • 128 Macas // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:34 PM

jazzyp – Have to disagree about Guti, once he came back last year he was easily our best player for the rest of the season. Strong and committed, intelligent, could beat a man, and put some good forward passes in as well. Yes we were generally terrible in that period, but his form was one of the positives for me.

  • 129 Thump // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:37 PM

@toonkk: I think with Jonjo spraying passes out, it’s only a matter of time before Mitro starts scoring. He looked devoid of confidence in front of goal against WHU (and for a few games previous, actually), and he’d take one touch, and another, and hope for the best. By the time he did get a shot off, it was blocked immediately or the opportunity was gone.

More service equals more chances, equals goals (eventually).

  • 130 JackButler // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:37 PM

Sorry mate apart from the last few games he was pants. he even admitted himself his legs had gone.
remember we bought him as an offensive player and yet was using him as a makeshift left back.
Gutti only got into the squad because of the lack of depth we had at that time much like Willo has in his time with Nufc.
If he was that good a player and we let him go, How come not one single club offered him a contract in the PL or Championship or throughout Europe for that matter.
Like I say mate he had his high points and was well chuffed when he recovered from his illness, But for me his time was up at the club

  • 134 toon kk // Jan 17, 2016 at 8:43 PM

I’d take Berahino, I think he’d add a real cutting edge to our team, we need goals, he’d work great with Mitro, or any team needs game changers on the bench, so it would be great to have options to rotate.

He wasn’t as quick as he used to be but wasn’t slow by any means. Not sure which games you were watching as he looked really good to me in most of them, having only 1 or 2 average games. Even when he had to play on the wing in the last game he showed he looked good, still being able to beat a man. And he went to Deportivo, hardly a small club

    well said cookytoon

  • 186 Jonjo Wijnaldum // Jan 17, 2016 at 9:53 PM

    Swap Thauvin for Montero?

  • 187 Belfast // Jan 17, 2016 at 9:57 PM

He’s joint head coach and he won’t be speaking to the media the other head coach will be doing that.

    Confused? Yep me too.

  • 188 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 9:59 PM

Townsend is the type of player that Sunderland usually buy and overpay for and we laugh at them. Its worked so well for them bringing in PL proven players hasn’t it!

  • 189 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:00 PM

Belfast, sorry, whats that? Joint head coach, neither of them buying the players then and only one is allowed to talk. Bloody hell they make our set up seem normal!

  • 190 JamesToon // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:04 PM

Now that Austin has gone to Saints, would anyone fancy taking Shane Long? I know he’s turning 29 this month but he’s a proven goal scorer, has the pace to get in behind, would thrive off Shelvey’s passes. Could be a short term arrangement till the summer, maybe on loan, then in the summer go and buy either Callum Wilson or Andre Gray

  • 191 Jonjo Wijnaldum // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:05 PM

Long is poor. Agbonlahor would be a good shout

  • 192 Belfast // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:06 PM

Yeah Curtis is staying and will fill all the media commitments lol

I’m guessing the bloke probably speaks very little English, so they need Curtis to remain.

    Weird set up for sure.

  • 193 JamesToon // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:06 PM

Known for his work rate as well

  • 194 CookyToon // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:06 PM

Townsend is a 24yr old England international.. Sunderland have the 36yr old Wes Brown and the 34yr old John O’shea……

  • 195 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:08 PM

Cooky, meant more like Steven Fletcher and Danny Graham.

  • 196 CookyToon // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:11 PM

Other than that they have the 33yr old Jermaine Defoe and that kiddy fiddler Adam Johnson who always scores against us, so if Townsends only use is to slay the mackems twice a season sign him up!!

Point is different calibre of player totally!

  • 197 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:12 PM

Shane Long seems to play exclusively well against us. The only other decent game I remember him having for Southampton was against Villa I think. That was a great example of overpaying for a “PL proven player”. Never been much of a goal scorer but they splashed 12m on him.
How about Mane if you’re looking at Southampton?

  • 198 Goofy // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:12 PM

I’ve got a feeling Swansea will be Watford tomorrow. The higher being (whatever it is) won’t let us get out of the drop zone that easy. We’ve been cursed since Ashley bought the club. I’m not a doom merchant, just witnessed enough to know lady luck’s got up and gone when concerning Newcastle United. Here’s hoping it’s all going to change.

  • 199 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:14 PM

Cooky, not sure he is a different calibre, anyway there is only so much negativity i can throw the way of Townsend and it looks like I’m failing to win you all over to the dark side, so I give up….. For now…..

  • 200 Belfast // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:16 PM

Apparently a few Italian teams want Pelle, that’s probably why they’ve signed Austin.

  • 201 Munster Mag // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:21 PM

Still smiling after yesterday. How nice to be able to watch MOTD and be thrilled with some of the stuff we played. I am leaving relegation fears behind, and still laughing at Kirchoff. What a mess. As I saod yesterday, I honestly dont get many players wrong in terms of who will make it for us. I would be happy to see Thauvin out, who has little to offer us unless we are fully in control og a game, or against weaker teams. He crosses well, but lacks straight line pace, power, and fight. Saivet didnt get a lot of time yesterday, but I reckon he will prove to be a good signing. In fact, very good.

  • 202 JamesToon // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:22 PM

No way we’ll be able to get mane.

Would like lacazette but would pay max £18m, he’s got 7 goals in about 21 starts I think this season so I don’t think he’s really justified a £22m ish price tag

  • 203 JamesToon // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:37 PM

Same with me mate, I’ve already watched the first 30mins of the game twice! Best football I’ve seen us play in years. Hopefully if we continue like this, pundits will be going on about the “Newcastle style” of football

  • 204 Fostino // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:46 PM

Townsand… a happy boy with rolando becoming a great l.b. haha. Top 4 contenders then.

Could find new homes for marvo..Obertan..cisse…tiote…riverie…goofy…Willo.

Summer window then could be bout sorting the defence then again

  • 205 Munster Mag // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:48 PM

Me too James! And believe it or not, I enjoyed reading of Palace fans annoyance with palace and pardew. I know Tuff and Co wont believe me, but I dont want him to do well there – i get plenty of abuse from the 3 palace fans i know re letting pardew slip out of our hands etc. I only said he was middling, just not awful. Tuff has me accused of eating jellied eels guvnor!

  • 206 jayphoto // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:48 PM

@jamestoon – lacazettes poor season is partly due to Lyon playing much more crosses as they have Beauvue, that set up doesn’t suit lacazette. The main reason seems to be Grenier being out and Valbuena playing in the playmaker position. On the ball Grenier always looked to release Lacazette quickly getting AL in behind defences alot, (similar to Shelvey) they have a great understanding. Valbuena holds onto it far too long meaning defenders are able to sit deeper. Off the ball Valbuena and Lacazette prefer to drift to the right and theyve often made similar runs. Just not a great fit. Reminds me of shearer and scholes for England… Both world class but neither really worked that well with the other

  • 207 jayphoto // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:54 PM

Gotta say, gini might not be worth 40m yet but he has the very realistic chance of finishing his debut PL season with 15+ goals from midfield… Might be my imagination but hes getting better every time i see him too… If he has 10 goals next season by Jan id bet when we sell him he goes for more than Carroll did.
Most talented player we’ve had at newcastle in the last 10 years

  • 208 Jonjo Wijnaldum // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:15 PM

    Get Agbonlahor in

  • 209 Nufc-83 // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:18 PM

Toonandy that team you listed is put together totally wrong are you pards in disguise?

Kets ally sissokho looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool utter disgrace of a player.

I have wanted Shane long for a while at the club would be a great signing as he is like Bellamy with his running the channels but can deliver a great ball in and also leaps like a salmon so plays the target man role well.

If we sign Townsend which looks likely I want to put a list up of the posters who are all writing him off before he has played a game and the ones who think he will do well so they can’t slide out of it when he rips it up the same as a good few are doing with shelvey now.

  • 210 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:20 PM

Put me on the do well list

  • 211 Jonjo Wijnaldum // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:24 PM

    Players I’d sign:
    Van Aanholt

    Jay photo

You reckon it’s worth paying £18-25Mil for lacazette then?

  • 213 Dingo†® // Jan 18, 2016 at 12:13 AM

    lacazette – out
    townsend – in
