That ball from Shelvey to janmaat was outstanding, loved watching him ping balls around yesterday was great to watch.

For all of you football experts that are wondering what Andros Townsend can offer Newcastle United? Well here is the answer for you! He will supply Mitrovic with enough ammunition to score at least 15 Premiership goals this season. He is strong, very quick and direct and equally as good at crossing with both feet. I have been embarrassed by reading some of the comments saying that he is no good. Get him signed asap.

You’ve just put another 10m on his transfer fee….oh dear!

  • 4 Jack Root // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:40 AM

    Belfast
Your right. For me there’s a need to bring in another forward. Mitrovic held the ball up well and was combatative but he missed a number of chances that would have put the game out of sight. I thought Sissoko was poor and needs to get his head up to improve his vision. Delighted with Selvey who’s range of passing reminded of shades of Cabaye. A free role for Wijandrum proved he really is a Jack in the box. Overall movement and shape was excellent.
Given our current standing we need a proven goalscorerat this level.

One thing ive noticed about fans is their dishonesty
Reading through the comments you would think Colo has been putting in masterful performances whereas Mbemba has merely been the supporting act.
Here are a few stats from premierleague.com for you to chew on

Colo CLEARANCES made this season 85
Mbemba CLEARANCES made this season 138

    Last season
Colo Total Blocks 17 Total CLEARANCES 169
Willo Total Blocks 18 Total CLEARANCES 180

  • 6 Belfast // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:41 AM

67 yard pass apparently? Sublime !

Watching the Valencia incident again the referee looks in line with the incident but I think he’s watching the ball. He doesn’t react at all to that incident, doesn’t wave of signal for advantage or anything.

Still don’t think it’s a red card anyway.

  • 7 sparky55 // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:43 AM

I must admit the amount of bloggers on here who have written Townsend off is extremely neggy.

Yes his stats aren’t great on assists or scoring but

    a) How many out and out wingers like Townsend are prolific goal scorers?

    b) An assist is recorded when you’re last player to touch the ball before the goal scorer does…what about the guy the passed it to the guy who passed it to the goal scorer.

Shelvey was that man twice yesterday and you’ve all raved about him and said what a wonderful signing he is but when it comes to stats he’s played one game with no assists and no goals scored.

    Just saying!

  • 8 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:44 AM

Mbemba and Colo are building a great partnership but agree mbemba doesn’t get as much praise as he should he’s been a great signing.

  • 9 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:46 AM

    Toonbrother,
Saw something on the skysports website about who has been the best defender in the PL this season, they had a number of different catagories and showed the top 10 pr so players in each one. Mbemba was in more categories than any other defender. Colo was in one of them though, cant remember which.

  • 10 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:47 AM

Yep a 67 yard pass straight onto janmaats toe great first touch to set up for the cross.

I’m with you all the way mate…I think Colo is a complete and utter liability…but you need to let it go mate…we get it and know where you stand on this particular subject but lets enjoy the moment…we won yesterday and Colo played well (that wasn’t easy for me to say out loud by the way)

Put the whale music on…arms out stretched…deep breathe in…slowly out and repeat.

  • 12 toonbrother // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:48 AM

he has cleared the ball 53 times more than colo this season and we’re only halfway through the seeason
he does all the work !
very disturbing how little credit he gets from fans.

  • 13 mindshaft // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:48 AM

Think people are praising Colo simply for the fact he’s started putting in decent performances whereas the first 15 games he was gash … Mbemba makes the odd mistake but is a very good CB

  • 18 optimistic prime // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:52 AM

The 2nd goal was sublime, the pass the 1st touch the cross and the finish on a plate.

Hope to see a lot more displays like that, if Mitro starts banging them in I can see a cpl teams getting battered.

On their goal, silly back pass but I was more concerned how Colo and Dummet just stopped and weren’t watching the runner. Poor play from all 3 IMO.

Cracking game good result but I still felt nervous, we really need to start finish atleast 10% of these chances.

P.s Gini was class, Shelvey wasn’t bad either 🙂

  • 19 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:53 AM

Spatky, people like me are being negative because he’s shit, he’s just a headless chicken Obertan clone. I dont see a queue of other clubs lining up to take him off Levy’s hands.
He might be capable of maybe five assists in a full season, so may get two if we sign him now. My problem is that i think we can do much better and that there are better players out there in the same or lower price brackets.
It just reminds me entirely of the Thauvin deal. A player who looked like he might have potential when he was young, turns out he hasn’t.
Townsend had a brief period where defenders didn’t know what he was going to do, he soon got found out and faded into oblivion. Thats also the reason he did ok for England as the opposition had never heard of him.

  • 20 Jib // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:53 AM

The fulsome and at times OTT praise for Shelvey reminds me of this.

The pendulum mood swings of the Geordie Nation are something to behold at times.

We are a simple , uncomplicated lot , us Geordies !

  • 21 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:55 AM

    Toonbrother – lol

Think it was most trips to Argentina in a calendar year whilst “injured”

  • 22 AncientC // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:55 AM

Toon brother, probably because Colo is a better passer and does not need to hoof it as often as Mbema. Colo produces consistently high passing success percentages.

  • 23 optimistic prime // Jan 17, 2016 at 10:57 AM

Im one of Colos biggest critics, can’t stand him and don’t want him at the club never mind captain.

I’ll admit he’s had 3/4 decent performances of late, not sure if he’s been that good or he just looks better because he was pants before.

He’s not the answer for me but if he keeps performing like he has of late I can’t slate him to much.

    http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11096/10130058/who-has-been-the-premier-leagues-best-defender-so-far-this-season

None of Mbemba, Colo, Dummett or Janmaat doing that well in the stats

  • 25 Goofy // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:00 AM

Wini is world class, hopefully he stays for a long time. I noticed him smiling each time the volume in the stadium increased, the guy’s loving his football and seems to love the Geordies screaming.

Colo was class yesterday and has been for a while now. At 34 he has great energy, I’ll miss the guy when he retires.

Shelvey made some excellent passes, he brings a calmness into the centre and can’t wait till he scores his first screamer, an excellent buy

Saivet looked a little of the pace but got better after 10 mins. He put in some strong tackles, we’ll just have to wait and see if he’s going to make it.

Colback played brilliant. I usually have a dig at him for playing to negative but he was class yesterday, maybe having Saivet to push for his place is going to pull the best out of Colback.

Dummett had a great game. He is much faster than he looks.

Mitro is tough mofo, he battles for every ball, just needs to get his shooting boots on.

All in all a great win HWTL

  • 26 sparky55 // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:03 AM

    Sutty

To be honest I’ve never seen him play live, I’ve seen him play for England and IMO he played very well.

I’ve seen him on MOTD over the years but never really took much notice of him because he’s not and never has been a toon player so I’m certainly not qualified to judge him in any way shape of form.

You have…you think he’s utter sh!te and everyone is entitled to their opinion but I’d be very interested in knowing how much you’ve seen him play to make such a judgement.

  • 27 Pitmatic // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:03 AM

Sparky, you took the words out of my mouth. This obsession with “assists” is a bit weird. I don’t remember the term even existing twenty years ago. Shelvey was the key architect of both goals yesterday, yet only Wijnaldum and Janmatt get the credit.

None of that demonstrates that Townsend is a good player, but his main attribute is running at pace with the ball, moving the team from a defensive phase to an attacking phase very quickly, from which chances can develop. The only player who really does that for us at present is Sissoko, but to me he never seems particularly convincing, and indeed often sparks counter-attacks against us by being disposessed too easily. I wouldn’t complain if Townsend was bought as his long-term replacement on the right, but equally happy to see how Townsend, Wijnaldum and Sissoko could work as an attcking midfield trio for the rest of the season. Happy days, hopefully.

  • 28 mindshaft // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:05 AM

One thing that Shelvey brought to the team is confidence to pick a pass – after his first few passes were successful in bringing goals even Colback was trying (and succeding) in actually passing forward !

  • 29 AMEOBI // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:05 AM

    Toonbrother,

Are you even from this country? I’d honestly love to smash your head in. You’re such a deluded colo obsessed tool. It’s boring, colo was outstanding yesterday as he has been the last few games.

  • 30 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:05 AM

Mindshaft, how can you read that and not think Mbemba is doing well?
He’s made more tackles than any other CB, he’s in the top 10 players for clearances, interceptions etc. Etc.
He appears in the lists more times than any other player in the PL

  • 32 browny1107 // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:07 AM

i think we already have better than townsend.
    where would he play?
on the right – no, we have sissoko
on the left- altho Perez isnt his best there i think he has done enough to stay in the team. Id also rather give aarons or thauvin a chance.

I’d be surprised if Townsend doesn’t come. The player wants to come; we have the money. Even Charmless couldn’t mess this up, could he?

  • 35 JDdubai // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:12 AM

    Mindshaft @24

    Eh??

    Mbemba
    7th in tackles(top CB)
    4th in interceptions
    6th in clearances
    6th in blocks(Colo is 4th)
    5th in duels(top Cb)

How exactly you come to that conclusion, based on this link, that Mbemba isnt doing too well i dont know.

I tihkn Mbemba is one of the form CBs this season, totally consistent, solid in 1vs1 especially with him pace. Im very happy no-one seems to be catching onto this, keep it quiet and we keep him for longer.

  • 36 Jack Root // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:12 AM

    GEORDIE69
WOW 15 goals. I would personally look at other options but not be so mystified should we sign him, as when Carr recommended and we bought Thauvin. We do need better delivery into the box. Should we sell Tiote we could well settle on him and with an extended run of games he could be an asset.
However, questions need to be asked as to why Townsend joined Spurs in December 2008 and has been on loan @
Yeovil, Leyton Orient, MK Dons, Ipswich, Watford, Millwall, Leeds, Birmingham and QPR. Talking to a Spurs fan he tells me that he’s a late developer ( still only 24) and that he lacks consistency.
He’s apparently very good or has a mare which maybe accounts for the number of subs. Up to end of last season 22 apps and 25 subs with 3 goals. Carr needs to be held accountable for his recommendations and McClaren needs to have faith in him. Which I sense he doesn’t – has Carr really had a hand in the Shelvey signing. We really need a shake up of the academy and scouting recruitment policy generally.
I said earlier of the need for fresh recruitment on the scouting front. By all means keep the local regional scouts but Carr needs to be replaced as effectively a DOF by someone able to function as Chief Scout and head of recruitment. This would enable McClaren to regulate scouting to his requirements and devise appropriate programmes. .

( Info on appearances taken from PFA players records by Barry j Hugman).

  • 37 defenders needed // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:13 AM

All mitro had to do was lift the ball for top corner not bottom and he would of scored, can’t wait for him to start scoring I believe he has it in him to be a great player, he gets him self in the position to score he’s just not got no luck on his side when it comes to finishing but I believe he can.

  • 38 sparky55 // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:14 AM

    Forget thauvin..he’s a gonner.

Aarons has got all the ‘potential’ in the world but to date has not had a run in the team anywhere long enough to suggest he’s the answer to any of prayers winger wise.

Like I’ve said before…everyone suggesting we’d have Sissoko AND Townsend might be jumping to conclusions.

  • 43 posada // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:19 AM

That’s another good point made about stats. Shelvey will get no credit for an assist.
On the centre half debate. I remember Jack Charlton talking about his partnership with Bobby Moore.
Jack attacked the ball with aggression and was always putting his head in where it hurt. Jack said Moore did’nt but he always did just enough to defend any situation.
The two together were a good blend. Another era granted but perhaps something similar there with Collo and Co.
Collos lack of pace does worry me.
When Mc gave him a new contract I actually thought he was going to play him centrally as part of a back 3. The classic Dutch style. 3/5/2.

  • 45 posada // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:22 AM

    Sparky
A lot of talk about wingers but I actually think we are heading for a system where the width and crosses come from fullbacks.
Out and out wingers don’t seem to be the modern way.

  • 46 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:23 AM

Sparky, a couple of my good mates are Spurs fans so I’ve watched a lot of their games over the last few years, as I said, he does ok for England as the opposition don’t know him.
When playing on the right all PL defenders just learnt to show him on the outside as the only thing he had in his arsenal was cutting in and having a pot shot.
His general link up play is nothing to write home about.
If we bring him in we have to drop someone from the starting XI, one of Perez, Sissoko or Wijnaldum,
Out of those it could only really be Perez. Perez has better link up play and will score more, not really sure what people think he is going to offer? The only place I would have him is coming off the bench to counter attack in games where we are ahead (rare i know!) but I think he must have been guaranteed a first team spot to be so keen to come.
I also wouldnt mind too much if we just got him on a 6 month loan without a prearranged buy clause i.e no of games

Having watched recently the 1966 game and MNF analysis it seems that Bobby Moore had anticipation and a ” football brain”. He didn’t need to do the dirty stuff.

Jack Root – I called him strange man because of the way he operates.I admire his doings,
ambitions and plans too, dont get me wrong on that, and he is one of my favorite dof who I wish to be in sjp but the way he acquire and evaluate players is questionable. Look at how he over pays and wasted- Soldado 25m,Lamela 30m,Capou 10m etc.., w/h are flop buys.If he handled financial transactions well, how come he made flop buys? Which will make him strange man the way he handle finances. And now valuing Townsend at 14m w/h isridiculous. You won’t deny that these kind of operations will diminish your creditability?
As he is a mixed bag,his club is in mixed fortune too despite being in the top five. Now he’s trying to ruin our chances of acquiring one of the futures star winger in the premiere league!

  • 49 Jack Root // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:25 AM

  • 50 AncientC // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:30 AM

Only toonbrother could come out after a game and slate Coloccini and give high praise to Mbema, especially after a game in which Mbemba made a mistake that toonbrother would slaughter Coloccini for.

    Impartiality at its worst.

  • 51 Nufc-83 // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:31 AM

Stats are a load of crap and don’t show what a player brings to the team at all. It clearly shows that toonbrother has to use stats to try and show how bad colo is when he has been immense for the last few games.

People looking at Townsend stats and slating him even comparing him to obertan are you for real!! Have you actually seem Townsend playhe is 10x the player. it’s just as bad as me saying go to YouTube you will see Townsend scoring great goals against top prem and European sides aswell as on the international seen. Search obertan and you see the odd assist and skill but mostly from u21 games lol. Stats or YouTube are Garbage go watch the player and see he is much better than obertan and brings bags of ability. Obertan lol still can’t stop laughing at how embarrassing people are when they claim to know anything about football and Coke out with such statements.

I will tell u my problem with signing townsend
on the right he is greedy lack of end product Ie crosses cuts inside and shoots

now what I will say I think it was hail wor that pointed out a few days ago the lad is left footed (all I found was he is both ) But it does explain him cutting in all the time and cracking a shot off if we deploy him on the left and he start whipping balls into the box I and no1 else can have any room to complain

looks like he will be deployed on the left so I am ok with that although at 12 mill I think he is over priced

we will also lose taylor and willo in the summer so we need another Englishmen in the ranks for the hg rule I think so this also might have something to do with it

  • 56 Pitmatic // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:38 AM

Shelvey’s home debut was certainly the best since Sissoko’s. His energy and intelligence seemed to lift everyone, in the same way that a good conversationalist brings others out of their shells. I wonder if he could be the key to finally getting something out of de Jong, or whether he just renders him surplus to requirements.

Anyway, West Ham must have got a hell of a shock. They’d have prepared thoroughly, watching all our tapes from way back, but were met with a completely different animal. I’d now expect us beat Watford quite convincingly next weekend. That cup match will have had them fooled…

  • 57 catchy in norway // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:39 AM

I have to say big Shteve is the the total anti P45,

he plays fantastic football, he tries to win games instead of hanging onto a draw that we have from the beginning, he encourages them to play it out not just hoof it.

he builds players back up from low confidence, colo has been a different player along with many others in the squad, even Goofy yesterday was different.

he should get more notice from the fans for the great job that he is doing…

p45 is starting to hang players out to dry at palace, Shteve dosnt blame anyone in public, if the player makes a mistake, the player already knows he has, and will get some coaching on that in training.

its safe to say im back impressed with him

I see where you’re coming from. He had a stack load of money following the sale of Bale. With little time to spend he’s acknowledged that he made mistakes. I see Spurs as a club that could have a golden period particularly should Wenger go anytime soon. They do seem to be building.
Levy is a Shepherd football type but with a long term plan and vision. Spurs have planning permission for a new ground. Levy has a full time job at the football club. McClaren will be given time to get more of his own way and he is clearly involved in a power struggle with Carr.

  • 61 AncientC // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:43 AM

There is nothing wrong with stats, the problem is the misuse of the data, or, reading into things that are not there.

Look at the stats that have been produced on Mbemba on this thread. If a defender is in the top 10 for blocks, that statistic is very likely correct, but you also need the data on the ‘amount of blocks to shots in reach’ to get an overall statistic that is proportionate.

  • 62 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:43 AM

Beer, Spurs moved him from LW to RW because he was ineffective on the left. He has a decent shot on him but it’s difficult for a left footer to shoot from the left, angles are against you, also he has zero crossing ability so LW didn’t suit him on the creative side either.

On Colo, I’ve slated him a number of times over the last couple of years and rightly so, I thought he was brilliant yesterday though, and has been very good over the last month or so in general, fair play, keep it up.

Problem with prospective purchase of Townsend is not only about his stats. As a watcher and supporter I try not to get too wrapped up in stats although they have their place in sport they remain only part of an equation and mostly not the most pertinent information -a point I think Sparky was driving at earlier.

The average fan makes his mind up on what he sees – a very visceral assessment. It is possible to miss things in matches especially when watching on TV and I do find myself being persuaded at times about players I hadn’t picked up on by the well argued points of the less hysterical pundits and even on here by some posters perceptive posts.

Townsend is being priced by Levy at what he feels his value is in the market despite his fall from grace at the club over the years. Others may not agree but what happens in these type of transfers is who blinks first. Ferdinand another favourite player of mine has shown himself to not be as effective in this aspect of the game as he was a player and undoubtedly cost QPR money by his ill-judged brinkmanship in the Summer even turning down over £10M from Leicester although perhaps Austin wasn’t keen.

A clear factor in a purchase is what is he worth to you not what selling club say is their price. This can lead to a club paying what others see as over the odds but in desperation the buyer has to pay. The other factor which can come into play is what can the particular player bring to your team as opposed to others looking at him – a missing piece of a jigsaw?

Until recently it is clear our policy was driven by business only and not team needs we might be seeing a loosening of that especially if Townsend is bought at Levy’s price.

Toonbrother – I agree with you that Colo was pants for the first few games of the season. However the last few games he has been much better and I’d be interested to see his stats for, say, the last 5 games. You let your outright hatred blind you to the facts – all players have periods where they are a bit off the pace maybe because they are carrying an injury we don’t know about – I know Colo suffers with back problems. I’m not excusing him just pointing out things are not as black and white (no pun intended) as you make out!

unfortunately I don’t think SM likes Perez in the same way as he doesn’t seem to rate Aarons much either.
Both both these 2 are way better than Townsend

  • 69 switch365 // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:54 AM

Doen’t take a brain surgeon to suggest that Shearer having a few 1 to 1 sessions with Mitro could and probably would help turn these 3-5 missing opportunities every game into 1-2 goals.

Would be far better short-term and long-term for both player and club and would allow the funds to go where they really needed, buying a new LB and CB !

  • 70 AncientC // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:55 AM

You would think Daniel Levy would have learned about overpricing his players by now – they lost substantial amounts on Robbie Keane due to their greed.

  • 71 sparky55 // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:56 AM

If townsend is half as bad as most of you say he is and if Maclaren is in a battle with Carr over who has the final say when buying a player in future….do you honestly think Maclaren would stick out his neck at this precise moment in time and buy a cr@p player??? If Maclaren does that now and he fails then Carr will win the battle…so there’s a lot at stake already.

I’m ambivolent about Townsend because I don’t really know if he’s good or not and therefore not best placed to make that judgement…but Maclaren obviously rates him, Hodgson obviously rates him, and he’s only fallen from favour since Potchy came to town…so maybe he’s worth a punt because even if you pay 12 million for him and it doesn’t work out, we won’t lose all the money like we have with the failed frogs because Townsend’s only 24, he’s english and he’s an english international which means his value wont fall like a stone if the move doesn’t work out for him.

  • 72 Nufc-83 // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:58 AM

Rotanda stats could add to an overall assessment but you can’t base the ability of a player on them that’s total garbage. Just like someone said on here shelvey played very well yesterday but got no assist or goal. Britton from Swansea had a higher pass completion than iniesta and Xavi… Is he better no.

To make a good judgement people should have watched Townsend play a number of times and I would bet my life not many slating him have. Maybe I’m wrong as the times I have watched him are for England and when he went to qpr and looked awesome in both teams. I haven’t seen him a lot for Spurs or lately so I could be wrong but he certainly has ability and is much better than obertan.

  • 73 magscar // Jan 17, 2016 at 11:58 AM

    Rotonda

Toon brother backed himself into a corner a long time ago and has valiantly stuck to his guns.

I can only think he has been in his corner so long that he has grown comfortable there and eventually given Colo’s age and our usual rollercoaster way he inevitably will be proved right – in his eyes anyway.

The alternative is that he is a one note wum but he has stuck around so long that on balance I think he isn’t.

If Colo is injured dropped or goes will be interesting to see if he has any other insight to share once unburdened from his self made shackles.

  • 74 AncientC // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:00 PM

Shelvey will get statistical credit for every defence splitting pass he makes, even the ones that do not end up as goals. The two goals he helped create – there was still a lot to do before it hit the back of the net.

  • 75 Jack Root // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:01 PM

    nut meg
I’ve also heard fans of West Ham say he was a clean tackler. Given the emphasis of speed and power in the modern game would he be as effective. Many say Jimmy Greaves would score 40 + goals. They also say that Greaves and Shearer playing together would be unstoppable. Pitches are far better, training and diet. Less drinking.

I have always admired Shelvey but he’s the type who has to be managed. Personally I think Cisse will/ would perform well with Shelvey picking a pass. He wouldn’t be caught offside so much because Shelvey has the Cabaye range of passing and speed of thought.

On Stats, %,possession is bunkum just look at Sunderland under Allardyce. I only ever look at it in the Opta final third. Janmaat hugging the touch line with Shelvey pinging balls to him will stretch defences and hopefully enable us to get points from our next two gamesat are away.
Watching Coloccini recently I think his massive fall off in form could well be down to only just getting back to fitness. Others have said its more a question of him buying into McClaren’s way of operating. I am a Jack Colback fan because you know what your going to get

  • 76 sparky55 // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:02 PM

One last note on Colo…yes he’s doing ok at the minute but I would still wager a considerable sum that our defensive record would improve with him injured or sulking

  • 77 Nufc-83 // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:02 PM

Ancient how will that be pass completion as he was behind a number of players yesterday? Forward passes not sure there tracked in the mainstream anyway.

  • 78 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:05 PM

Most teams have a big strong centre forward. Colo can’t handle them. He’d rather close down a winger. That’s when we come unstuck.

He turns his back on blammers too. Mind you, the number of players doing that and costing their team lately is scandalous.

  • 79 Nufc-83 // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:05 PM

Jack I don’t think cisse is at all the type to work well with shelvey. He is poor at running in behind (often offside) if he does get in behind the lad can’t finish only instinctive if it falls to him in a split second. I have lost count over his time with us how many 1v1 he missed just because he had time to think.

I see what you are saying but from memory some of our worst displays/hammering have come against quick interpassing teams Man City Leicester and Even Palace spring to mind.

Colo has his faults but something has happened in last month or so. Not sure if it his self improvement, team changes or an effective CDM screening him. Their is no doubt that for whatever reason he has rediscovered his appetite and long may it last but I fear it could go as quickly as it came

  • 84 Nufc-83 // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:11 PM

Stats are pretty much nonsensical in my view,, when discussing this topic with friends or what have you I always use the example of luka modric,, go look up his stats now for Tottenham in the premier league,, his best return in 4 seasons was 4 goals and 4 assists out of 36 appearances,, that was the season before he got a 30 million pound move to real Madrid..

  • 86 Jack Root // Jan 17, 2016 at 12:12 PM

We picked up Roland from Bristol City out of contract. I would suggest that he’s being nursed along at present. His contract is up in the summer. A player who I think could do the role up top and link with shelvey (may surprise people as he is at the club) is Perez. He is intelligent in his movement and runs the lines well if we have him on the last man shelvey would find his movement. He is also a natural finisher and would not miss many 1v1 IMO. He reminds me of Suarez in the way he plays.

spaghetti bandit – goals and assists are only 2 statistics. I would say if you looked deeper in Modric’s stats before he joined Real Madrid, you would find him outperforming other Premier League players in the same position, over a whole set of other dynamics… passing, forward passing, shielding the ball etc etc.

You need to be aware of wages and fees and the options which will be created or available as a result of your negotiations during a window and maybe the season as a whole. Something has happened to Colo.

Blackley has rightly pointed out that the guy is rarely up for challenge with a tough centre forward. All of the time he tends to peel out wide and attack the other teams wingers (both left & right)

Folks have often associated that with him being a headless chicken. Maybe they were right – but no longer. Instead of lunging in and going to ground he’s standing up to them shepherding them away and also putting in timely tackles only as and when needed.

Is it better coaching? If so, proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks.

I followed him especially in Milan, he was going out because he had a lot of injuries, but when he was available, he looked great, very quick. He also went out from Milan, because he used to go out with Barbara Berlusconi daughter of Berlusconi and after they broke up he went. He wanted a new challenge in Brazil and he played a lot of matches and improve his injury record, I think he wouldn´t be too much gamble…he is just what we need, Lacazette/Berahino/Pato/Remy I want one of those, no matter who, they are very similar players and I think Pato was the biggest talent of all of them

I think yesterday just capped of a great set of performances over the last 6 games against some quality teams we have played , some of the chances created from open play but not finished is actually quite staggering really. Man U played with 12 men who helped them out when ever he could, I am sure it would have been a different game if we had of scored first , but he gave them a free penalty which forced to come out more which gave them more room up front than normal. But even so, we should have had a pen from linfart fouling and just maybe flanny the head should have been sent off for just kicking anything that moved, and I’m baffeld how how Smalling stayed on the pitch , 2 times he grabbed Mitro and flung him to the ground as well as a load of other fouls..

the stats dont lie. By normal defensive standards he was average at best yesterday
Mbemba on the other hand was brilliant!
Made far more clearances and won far more tackles
As for his “mistake” its understandable.
In serbia there’s a saying : those who don’t do any work make no mistakes.
    Perfectly sums up Colo
He does pretty much nothing for 90 mins lets Mbemba,do all the defensive work

It does seem rather steep. Your buying potential and largely unproven.
I would personally look elsewhere. The delay is to try an get the price down and of course like Spurs were both interested in Berahino. As such would we be helping them finance their purchase to our detriment.
However, if Tiote goes and we can get a few more out of the door maybe in can be justified. You need to look in the round as I suggested above. SAylor is English and we do need to look at quota. FFP selling Tiote will enable us to be more ambitious on striker.

    Couple of points
1.Very astute analysis mate. Very few fans have the brains/discernment to notice how often he mindlessly charges out of central defence (where he belongs) to tackle opposing wingers (usually unsuccessfully) leaving gaping holes in the back.
    2. I disagree agree with the view he is doing it less these days. I recall him charging out to the left side once yesterday, causing confusion with Colback and being left for dead. Fortunately mbemba bailed us out on that occassion.

    3. He still charges out mindlessly into the defensive midfield and sometimes even upfront to the left wing nowadays.
    4. i think he abandons his defensive roles so often because it means he is seen as not culpable for goals conceded (at least in the eyes of retarded simpleton fans like vast majority on this blog)
    5. I will concede he goes to ground less often these days. Not sure why. Maybe he realises he looks less stupid when he stays on his feet. I’m sure criticism from Jamie Redknapp, Gary Neville and a few others had something to do with it

You’re lucky you didn’t buy anything Lesh. They usually bill you for a sports direct magazine that you didn’t order and make you pay a quid for the dodgiest looking mug ever. 🙂

Just as well it wasn’t Anne Sommers!

People have their own agendas over certain players but what cant be denied is overall the team is starting to improve considerably.

We are pressing all over the field , fighting for the ball , winning physical battles and blocking shots that previously we were not doing last season or this season!

Just wish Mbemba had just smashed that out for a throw in and we probably would have been looking at a very comfortable 2 nil win or maybe more goals because we would have been relaxed enough to keep playing the way we were in the first half!

Some of our passing and moving was excellent we made a West Ham team who are getting praised from everyone this season look average the danger man Payet hardly got a sniff

  • 147 magscar // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:16 PM

Don’t. Too expensive for me anway not that I know anything other than they didn’t seem to have prices in windows which always says “if you need to ask you can’t afford it”

if we need a winger what about Matt Phillipps from QPR for 8m Townsend 12/14 which one would you choose??

  • 149 Nufc-83 // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:26 PM

One player looking to get back in the PL is Hernandez wow imagine him and shelvey … Through balls and finish for days

  • 150 Nufc-83 // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:27 PM

People may take the Mick but I would get el mohamaddy from hull can play rm and rb and I have never seen a bad ball in the box would improve us massively as a squad

  • 151 Thump // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:28 PM

To be completely honest, looking at the range of Shelvey’s passing, Townsend makes a lot more sense. If Schteve’s plan is to have pacey wingers bombing up and down with Shelvey spraying passes into space ahead of him. If you release Townsend into space he can be lethal, and with Janmaat on the overlap, and Sissoko cutting out wide, you can start seeing some real attacking intent.

Not that I’m expecting Shelvey to hit a 70 yard pass every game, of course!

Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:15 PM

Couldn’t agree more with respect to fighting for the ball and winning battles. The season we finished 5th our defence contained both Willo and Danny Simpson, neither of whom could be described as top class players or indeed fans favourites. That season, they and the other defenders were putting their bodies on the line and blocking what the could, however they could. It certainly wasn’t like watching a top class Italian serie A defensive performance. I think Simpson made 5/6 goal last ditch goal line clearances that year.

It is that spirit that we now need to stay up. If the management can get them to maintain it until the end of the seson we’ll be OK. There’s a litle bit of class in the team too which should see us through.

  • 153 WWSBRD // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:35 PM

So Pato eh? Seems far fetched but stranger thinks he ticks the boxes of age, potential, attitude issues and he is injury prone…no chance we have scouted him like

That Austin deal still smarts, fingers crossed we get that Frenchmen from Chelsea he’s the only striker link we have had that I’d be confident in him keeping us up

  • 154 Small World // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:35 PM

    Thump // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:28 PM

I think you’ll find that shelvey may attempt at least one 60/70 yard pass every game if given the chance. I believe he has had some stick in the past as they don’t always come off.

I’ll be happier with that than the 3 dozen passes sideways and back from others I could think of.

  • 155 Mag52 // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:39 PM

    Sutty.

There are some pro and some anti Townsend posters on here. There are two sides to most questions of course.
While not having a detailed knowledge of Townsend’s plus and minus points, from where I stand it looks very much as if he is Macca’s choice, and I think it’s high time that, in any right minded club, the manager should have a big say in who is bought and who is sold.
It seems as if the manager wanted Shelvey, and although it is early days yet, JJ could turn out to be a super signing for the club. For this reason, more than any other, I’m all in favour of getting in Andros.
If he subsequently turns out to be hopeless for us, then the manager must take the blame, but I’d very much like to see an end to managers taking flack for poor performances by teams, the players of which they have had no say in buying.

I think the Townsend transfer is a done deal and was held back until Monday in case we cocked up against West Ham.

would take him over townsend any day of the week!

  • 159 SPRINGY // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:45 PM

    afternoon all
i think macca wants townsend for the left hand side…its our weakest position thats why we’ve had a number of different players there and none have worked, townsend is naturally a left footer with blistering pace, so macca probably sees him just changing his game to more supply from the left wing rather then cutting in and finish from the right wing, but if they need to change the shape he can easily switch wings and be affective…apart from the last few games we have struggled to create most of the season and macca sees him as a supplier for mitro as well working the left hand side to help our left back.

  • 160 ilovetoon8788 // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:47 PM

    @mag

Agree with you. Mclaren has to have a say in transfers and I belive shelvey and townsend is his choice. I don’t rate townsend but if that’s mclaren choice then it’s good. He needs to bring in players HE wants to believe in. The player too will play for the manager knowing they wanted them.

Shelvey has the potential to be Toon’s Gerrard

  • 162 toon22 // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:50 PM

The thing with Townsend is atleast hes English,we need more in the team.
Imho he cant be any worse than another French winger gamble.
Get the feeling Arons is being kept out of the team so pressure him into signing a deal,if he was in the first team and flying he would be snapped up.As it stands he looks like an injury prone gamble.

  • 163 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:52 PM

    Mag

I do kind of agree with you.

In the summer I was well behind the signings of Mitro, Mbemba & Wijnaldum. Some people are mixed on Mitro but I love all three. I was against Thauvin as it meant his purchase would block us getting someone better in, be it in that position or another.
Same this window, I’m 60/40 in favour of Saviet, not seen much of him so reserving judgement. I was well behind getting Shelvey, think he’s just what we need.
I’m of a similar opinion with Townsend as I was with Thauvin, maybe a bit OTT in criticism, he might be alright and as you say if the manager wants him that should help.
Lets see how it pans out

  • 164 SPRINGY // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:52 PM

i also believe this townsend transfer is a macca’s choice…seems to have been a shift of transfer policy this window…carr doing the scouting and macca deciding who he wants….ya na… the way it should be??

odds on players to sign for Newcastle:
    Andros Townsend 1/8 favs
    saido Berahino 7/2
    Alexandra Lacazette 9/2 favs
    Loic Remy 13/2 favs

    hmmmm

I do hope we get townsend though

    toon 22
    with regards to aarons
he’s only had a very few games back and the game yesterday was maybe a hard game to early…if we were 3-0 up he would of probs got a run out but with us hanging on a bit putting him in might of been disastrous….not saying your wrong…. just offering an alternative view mate

  • 168 SUTTY1978 // Jan 17, 2016 at 1:59 PM

Chancel, based on those names it looks like were opening a rehab centre for out of form, out of favour players with attitude problems
What are our odds for Balotelli & N’Zogbia??

  • 169 AncientC // Jan 17, 2016 at 2:04 PM

JackRoot @ 125. Excuse the late reply.

On to your point – where exactly did I confuse “stats with FFP” please show me. I can save you a lot of time on that one…. I didn’t. Somebody is confused here, but not I.

Also, what is this about “you should not judge a transaction in isolation”? I made a point about Levy overvaluing his players – Tottenham lost out on a big pay day by refusing to sell Keane at a fair price, you will notice that no transaction was made in that instance.

  • 170 Thump // Jan 17, 2016 at 2:10 PM

@Small World: Oh I’m not saying he won’t attempt them, just those passes won’t be half as sweet as the one to Janmaat was. Been a long time since I’ve seen a Newcastle player look up, see a run, and shoot a ball 70 fscking yards, with just enough power that it can be controlled with precision by the receiving player. Something else, man.

  • 171 SPRINGY // Jan 17, 2016 at 2:22 PM

Watched the first half again. Perez didn’t put a foot wrong and was my motm in the 1st half. Him and Winjaldum are similar players, both fast, can beat defenders with ease, eye for the pass and the goal. They both need to start every game. Perez looked tired a few games back but didn’t look it yesterday.

  • 177 toonking // Jan 17, 2016 at 2:35 PM

I took a look at the full fixture list of ourselves, scums, swansea, bournemouth and norwich and of those norwich and scums are the teams you’d think will get relegated on paper. The way the premier league has been running so far this season did make these paper pridictions harder to understand, ours alone could see the opposite happen based on recent poor performances against the smaller teams and decent performances against the bigger clubs.

Doing that fixture analysis I do have the belief we’ll manage to stay up this season but the most important part of our suvival could be getting a goal scoring striker even if he’s on loan. ones like mitrovic have consistently been missing chances and is unlikely to turn around during the rest of this season because each and every week the pressure is building on him. If a goal was all he needed then that penalty against manure would have given him that goal, The pressure he was under could have caused a messy penalty that gets missed as seen by most england players in penalty shoot outs but it was a great penalty got ourselves back in the game therefore could have given him the boost in confidence. If we don’t see ourselves get a goal scoring striker brought in then an injury to wini himself will see us go down.
