Midfielder Could Be Given New Role At Newcastle

With Henri Saivet and Jonjo Shelvey coming into the club last week, it seems they could be the new central midfield for Newcastle and once Henri Saivet came on for the injured Paul Dummett then Jonjo and Henri had a chance to play together for the last 30 minutes or so of the 2-1 win over West Ham.

And they are both expected to start on Saturday and with Jack Colback playing well at left-back in the second half he may continue in that position.

Jack is an experienced Premier League player and we had thought that Jack could possibly be used at left back when Jonjo and Henri were brought in.

Jack Colback challenges Aaron Cresswell on Saturday

Paul Dummett has played well the last couple of games – but left-back is a weakness in the Newcastle team and we could be getting a new left back in the summer – maybe Wijnaldum’s best pal at PSV – 21 year-old Jetro Willems, who already has 15 caps for the Netherlands.

The left-back was at St James’ Park for the opening Premier League game of the season to support Gini, when Newcastle drew 2-2 with Southampton.

There were rumors at that time it was almost a done deal Jetro would join us – but of course he has been out with a knee injury since pre-season training.

Jetro would be a great signing for us this summer and he has already played 143 games for PSV with 8 goals and 24 assists.

That’s also one way of ensuring Gini stays at Newcastle and he could help us get his pal to Tyneside – even though some big clubs will be after Willems in the summer.

Steve McClaren today has hinted he may use Jack Colback at left-back this Saturday:

“We might see a bit more of Jack at full-back,” b “It’s a possibility, although we don’t want to because Dummett has been doing very well there.”

“With the injury, we had a little look at that.”  “I thought it was very good, and Henri Saivet stepped into midfield well.” “You need that, you need a squad with options.”

Colback has played at left-back for Sunderland and we must say he looked fairly comfortable there in the second half last Saturday.

It’s good that Steve McClaren has some choices to make for the Saturday game – if Paul Dummett is fit to play.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I’d like a shot at the collective noun game – how about :-
    A toolbox of Townsend supporters.
    (ie they are all tools).

Stick with a winning team if its available. If dummet is still injured then fair enough. Otherwise dont mess about.

so if napoli want sissoko.. how about 15 mio + Koulibaly.. and then sign a right forward like berahino for 15..

    elliot
    janmaat mbemba colo/koulibaly dummet/colback
    saviet shelvey

    berahino wini perez/aarons
    mitro

sounds good on paper, but we cant know how much time berahino will need to get to his best…same with townsend..

    Chancel

Indeed. Some managers switch things about when there is no need. Watford are similar to West ham, and although we are away, we should be able to use the same formation to win the game.

Ed, i like the theory on Gini helping Willems come in and that “enuring” Gini stays with us.

Didn’t work out so well with Cabaye / Debuchy though

colback would do pretty well at lb imo and tbf he may be able to get a bit more forward as a lb than he does as a dm.

Wouldn’t be surprised if mcclaren played Aarons at left back if we don’t bring a new one in. Played there in pre season, would be interesting to see if he worked out well there, as he’d offer us more of an outlet down the left wing, but don’t think he would be as good at defending as Dummett is

I think long term if Colback wants to play for us he should be trying to get in at left back and establish himself in that position !!

He has everything to be a good full back and used to be good there for the Mackems including scoring against us !!!

Eventually would like to see us go to 3 at the back so we can have Janmaat and a left wing back (Aarons, Colback or Willems) provide the width

i was absolutley buzzing to be linked with wissam ben yedder ahen he started following a few of our players on twitter and have been keep typing his name in google to see if any more has came of it,, quite gutted to see spurs are bidding for him,, between 6 and 8 million which i think is a steal for him..

The only pleasing thing if spurs do get him is that there endless pursuit of ayoze should come to an end..

Seriously though on ben yedder,, quick,, gd finisher,, instinctive ,, skillfull for me personally the list goes on.. first came across him 3 or 4 yr ago watching a random game n he was qaulity throughout and was brought more to tha attention of him with us having ben arfa n after tht always looked out for him when toulouse were playing or on football manger etc n would quite reguraly google him for any links with our scouting of france and toulouse imparticular with sissoko,, jus this week they were on bt he had another gd game and bagged himself a goal,, i think he would be tha perfect foil for mitro,,anyone else seen him have an opinion????

    @23 toon

i bloody hope so willems is a great player and would be perfect for a back 5.

colback/dummett and perez are perfect squad players though who can do a decent job in a fair few positions but tbh i wouldnt have any of them for the strongest starting 11…not even perez and i really like the lad.
