With Henri Saivet and Jonjo Shelvey coming into the club last week, it seems they could be the new central midfield for Newcastle and once Henri Saivet came on for the injured Paul Dummett then Jonjo and Henri had a chance to play together for the last 30 minutes or so of the 2-1 win over West Ham.
And they are both expected to start on Saturday and with Jack Colback playing well at left-back in the second half he may continue in that position.
Jack is an experienced Premier League player and we had thought that Jack could possibly be used at left back when Jonjo and Henri were brought in.
Jack Colback challenges Aaron Cresswell on Saturday
Paul Dummett has played well the last couple of games – but left-back is a weakness in the Newcastle team and we could be getting a new left back in the summer – maybe Wijnaldum’s best pal at PSV – 21 year-old Jetro Willems, who already has 15 caps for the Netherlands.
The left-back was at St James’ Park for the opening Premier League game of the season to support Gini, when Newcastle drew 2-2 with Southampton.
There were rumors at that time it was almost a done deal Jetro would join us – but of course he has been out with a knee injury since pre-season training.
Jetro would be a great signing for us this summer and he has already played 143 games for PSV with 8 goals and 24 assists.
That’s also one way of ensuring Gini stays at Newcastle and he could help us get his pal to Tyneside – even though some big clubs will be after Willems in the summer.
Steve McClaren today has hinted he may use Jack Colback at left-back this Saturday:
“We might see a bit more of Jack at full-back,” b “It’s a possibility, although we don’t want to because Dummett has been doing very well there.”
“With the injury, we had a little look at that.” “I thought it was very good, and Henri Saivet stepped into midfield well.” “You need that, you need a squad with options.”
Colback has played at left-back for Sunderland and we must say he looked fairly comfortable there in the second half last Saturday.
It’s good that Steve McClaren has some choices to make for the Saturday game – if Paul Dummett is fit to play.
