Newcastle Midfielder Gives Injury Update

7:11 pm, Wednesday, January 20th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 91 Comments

Siem de Jong has tweeted an injury update, after he badly damaged his eye in training last Wednesday and could have even lost the sight in that eye.

He is still not allowed to train yet.

Mark…it’s not like McC is using him anyway

  • 3 juan // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:18 PM

Give the lad a break I’m sure he didn’t want to be injured

  • 4 Thump // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:19 PM

@chancel: I think you can forgive a player who had a contact lens rip into his eye.

  • 5 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:22 PM

    Just ne luck for siem

  • 6 Jan Stavik // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:22 PM

Unfortunately, he’s too slow for EPL.
We should try to use him in a deal to bring in some Dutch talent, I’m sure he’s still a big name over there.

  • 7 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:22 PM

Siem is a bit wasted on McC I think…sadly!

  • 8 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:22 PM

    Thump:
Ok this current injury is a freak accident but the lad has had more injuries than Darren Anderton since he came to SJP

  • 9 G // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:23 PM

I wouldnt start calling him Marcelino just yet Chancel. I still think he is going to come good. The lad has been unlucky, nothing more.

  • 10 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:24 PM

Jan…I can name plenty of players who was never fast but were a success in the PL!

  • 12 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:26 PM

Plus looking at our current set up I fail to see where Siem will fit in

  • 13 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:28 PM

The only position he fits in is where gini is playing and he’s no where near as good, offloading siem would be best for both parties

  • 14 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:29 PM

    Eaststandgeordie

Good idea, Swap Siem for that Fischer kid that Hail Wor was on about earlier

  • 15 Belfast // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:30 PM

He’s not good enough to get in our team Jesper, so he’s not that great.

  • 16 Munster Mag // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:30 PM

Jesper he is not wasted on smc. He is slow and injury prone. The first time i saw him for nufc i cudnt believe how off the pace he was. If u know so much, where wud u play him, and instead of who?

  • 17 optimistic prime // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:32 PM

    Spoof

    I’d agree with that.

    Chancel

I wouldn’t drop Mitro, I think what he gives the team is more than Perez.
I think Mitro will start hitting the net very soon, we’ll start making a lot more chances than we have previously.

I’d like Berahinio but I don’t think anyone mentioned would be much use other than him or Remy. I’d like a striker but don’t think we’re desperate, I’ve said loads our biggest problem was we’re piss poor in CM, now that’s changed I’m more comfortable with the squad.

  • 18 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:32 PM

    Chancel

If anyone will have him that is, I’m sure he will get a good offer in Holland maybe him and p diddy could go together.

  • 19 Hail Wor Ashley // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:36 PM

At this stage we’d be wise to see if Ajax want him back. Sure they’d jump at the chance to sign their former captain.

De Jong family aren’t made for this club.

  • 20 Jan Stavik // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:37 PM

For sure, Jesper – but deJong does not have extreme qualities to compensate for the lack of tempo. His touch is not good, he seem stressed when on the ball, and he’s not really suited for the counter attack style NUFC seem to want to play. The injuries must have damaged him, he’s not the player he used to be… He’s so poor these days that I’d rather play some youngster from the u21s, at least you’ll get energy and young spirit from them.

  • 21 Jib // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:37 PM

    Hail

De jongs are not made for this league.

  • 23 Jack Root // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:38 PM

He’s got something. Problem is he’s never fit for very long to have a run of games. Ball retention is excellent and he brings others into play.
    You can hardly blame McClaren.

  • 24 Jack Root // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:40 PM

I sense that Winaldum will be playing in his preferred position.

  • 25 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:41 PM

you are right Jack Root and he’s much better there than on the left

  • 26 geordie157 // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:44 PM

Don’t bother with Townsend, go get narsingh and offer de jong as part of the deal.

  • 27 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:44 PM

Gini as number 10 is the best thing for us and he will get a load more goals just needs to start scoring away from home, top player.

  • 28 Jan Stavik // Jan 20, 2016 at 7:44 PM

He’s probably on 50k+ a week, there is no way Ajax can afford that. A loan might be a good idea, we’re anyway paying the salary for some years to come.

  • 39 Sroka // Jan 20, 2016 at 8:18 PM

Certainly bad luck has haunted De Wrong Un since he joined. He does have some quality (lovely cushioned volley goal in the tail of last season springs to mind), and his lack of pace is offset by a good footballing brain, as you dont captain Ajax without it. Saying that, he really took the piss missing that sitter against Villa that would have got us 3 points, even Anita could’ve scored. I’ll put it down to low confidence and lack of match practice. I wouldnt sell him just yet, let him fight for his place – its nice to have a bench with players like him warming it.

  • 40 mattyNUFC // Jan 20, 2016 at 8:20 PM

I can’t believe there are people still saying he will come good. He’s a slow and s*** footballer. Sure he’s a nice guy but doesnt win is points. And I fail horribly in the sympathy department when he’s making 40-50k a week. Along with goofy, dummet, tiote and possibly rivière (not counting obertan as his stats are still better than our purported target Townsend), siem is one we can’t get rid of quickly enough

  • 41 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 20, 2016 at 8:24 PM

The only place I can really see De Jong getting a start is as a striker in the 4231 formation if you put lots of pace around him he can hold it up well and bring players into play

But hes rarely fit so if Mitrovic misses some games he probably wont be available to step in !!

We are going to struggle to move him on with the wages he is on though we should loan him out for a few months and see if he can come back in March/April fully fit and ready to make a contribution !

Send him to Coventry !!! They should be our feeder club as long as Mowbray is manager great to watch and looks after our players !

Those criticising De Jong, for being too slow obviously never saw Nobby Solano play!

Nobby did however have what it takes to play in this league and although always hugging the touch line he was never afraid of receiving / making a tackle.

De jong just seems too fragile and not robust enough in his play. The same could be said about Perez, though he compensates through the sheer energy in his game.

De Jong? Get him fit and ship him out as I simply can’t see where we can play him. Gini must have the 10 position nailed on and Perez can also play there. Simply too much competiton for the no 10 position and not enough for the number 9.

    @beermonkey

Yeah also Cresswell was only 4 million would have solved our left back position for years !! Puncheon was only 1.5 million as well !!

So many players we have missed out on for peanuts in the domestic leagues and we have spent more on foreign players who have ended up warming our bench ?

Maybe its because we never had any scouts look at them and then other teams snapped them up imagine Carr wants to have a look at players before the get the green light !

That boy Roofe from Oxford looks a future star as well we need to be getting these players early !!

  • 62 Jack Root // Jan 20, 2016 at 9:37 PM

    hibbitt
Yes we are. It also restricts our ability under FFP to bring others in as we are constrained by a high wage structure. I sense that Carr will not be getting his own way going forward in quite the same way as under Hughton and Pardew. You just need to consider the non performing assets acquired on Carr’s recommendation! McClaren is clearly not prepared to coach players bought by Carr. This window has made that ups dangly clear. Both players bought and those pursued. Time for a change. It’s not Ashley out, but Carr out for me.
Watching Spurs that’s a football club very much in the ascendancy through good management and administration. A very well structured club that ManU are looking to replicate.

Someone blamed Ashley earlier for not taking full ticket allocation for the Chelsea game. It’s nothing to do with officials at the club but the ticket prices at Chelsea. £ 50 + amongst the highest in the league. Arsenal are about the same. An absolute rip riff.
Toon army fans will know that fans from the Premier League undertook a “twenty’s plenty” campaign demonstration, earlier in the season . This at a time when the average away price was £53. Twice that for Bundesliga matches.

  • 65 ITUNDERASHELL // Jan 20, 2016 at 9:41 PM

If steeve can get close to 30 mill for Tiote and Sissoko and bring in Townsend and Bigaranho it will have been a good bit of business as the 17 mill spent so far will seem like loose change in the summer. Get a LB and CB tied down for the summer and we may just have a real team.

we don’t have a route for these youngsters to get to the first team
were so short of players outside the first 11 any player with any talent sits on the bench Armstrong should have been out onloan before this season same with Sammy bigi sataka

Berahino is pretty much the same age as Andy Carroll was when we sold him to Liverpool
    Berahino 85games 22goals WBA
    Carroll 80games 31goals NUFC
All of Berahino’s goals in the PL
No toon fan was doing anything but complaining about losing Carroll 5 years ago the phrase “huge flop” wasn’t entertained.

  • 75 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 20, 2016 at 10:30 PM

Seems such a hassle to do transfer with other premiership teams sometimes ! As well as expensive !

Its a bit more cut throat negotiating which is probably why we do better going to France and Holland because we offer much better deals for the player and clubs but in the premiership we are small fry in terms of what we can offer at the moment !

Feel we are getting played by Berahino and his agent who really wants Spurs or Chelsea and West Brom are trying to get as much money and will probably change the goal posts a bit like we did with Liverpool !

  • 76 The overrated Frenchman // Jan 20, 2016 at 10:33 PM

The relationship between Carr and Mondial is so fishy I can smell it from here. And the person or persons doing the scouting domestically must be spending more time in the boozer than watching matches. Have a look at the young players we’ve signed from domestic leagues over the last few years. None of them worth a pinch.

  • 79 Blofal // Jan 20, 2016 at 11:02 PM

    SWAMPY

That sounds like a good deal. I really like De Jong but he is currently behind Perez and Wijnaldum in that number 10 position. I would love to keep him but it’s not fair on him. He isn’t an impact bench player he has to start.

And if we bring in a left sided attacking mid/winger then I fear Perez will drop to the bench too further limiting his chances.

De Jong for Willems would be very good business.

  • 80 Blofal // Jan 20, 2016 at 11:02 PM

    Sorry Springy… autospell!!! 🙂

  • 81 jimmysmith // Jan 20, 2016 at 11:03 PM

Townsend and Berahino would add a combination of pace and skill that certainly Gouffran and Obertan couldn’t. They are both pretty fast, with decent skill levels, and Berahino has that real goal threat too. I’m a little surprised Aarons hasn’t been brought on a little more by McC, if he thinks thats what we’ve needed, but he has been injured, and perhaps there’s a maturity concern.

I think we’ll get Townsend, but to be honest, it’s hard to imagine getting Berahino, when he so plainly wants to go to Spurs. Then again we are Newcastle, a very famous club, and Ashley sure can sell it, whether it’s snake oil or not, I still don’t know, but he still can sell it.

Shelvey, Widjnaldum, Sissoko, Mitrovic, Janmaat, Mbemba etal, there’s a pretty long list of more than decent players who he’s coaxed into it.

Read an interesting article about Klopps problems at Liverpool stemming from having too large a squad with too few of sufficient quality in the right positions to play the way he favors. Courtesy of a transfer committee that doesn’t consult enough with it’s head coach.

Sounds familiar, although our problem seems more transitional. We are going for players Mcc approves of, but have at least 8 players on the books who I hope never to see again taking up space in the squad and slowing the process down.

Carr, under a remit of course, has certainly signed some duds, and the sooner they are gone the better off we’ll be.

I’m not sold on McC as a manager, but as a training ground coach, and judge of talent, he’s exactly what the club has needed to oversee Carr’s scouting.

  • 89 SPRINGY // Jan 20, 2016 at 11:23 PM

WWSBRD@82 – Don’t know. Maybe other clubs are similar. What I do know is that it’s dodgy business. I certainly don’t think it could be as entrenched at the really successful clubs. I just can’t see Barca or Bayern or Citeh signing players on the basis that their head scout gets a bung.
