Shenhua Considering Alternatives To Newcastle Midfielder

12:36 pm, Wednesday, January 20th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 15 Comments

The Chronicle has a good piece out today that helps to clear up some of the mystery surrounding what exactly is happening to Cheick Tiote’s potential move to Shanghai Shenhua.

It seems a bit strange that wages were the issue – since players move to China for the big money they can get near the end of their careers.

The Chronicle is reporting that wages are not the problem and they were agreed as part of a three year deal last week – and that makes sense.

Cheick Tiote – in Majorca, Spain

And Cheick is not even in China but he’s in Majorca, Spain (picky, picky), where the club’s senior officials are expected there tomorrow to make some final decisions on transfers.

The Shenhua squad has been training in Majorca while various transfer deals are being worked on – and Tiote’s is one of them.

The hold-up seems to be the 55 year-old French head coach Francis Gillot and his staff are considering other players they may want to recruit, which is presumably why there is a delay in the potential Tiote deal being completed.

And it could even be procedural reasons for the delay  – maybe they are waiting for the higher ups to OK the deal when they arrive in Majorca tomorrow?

Francis Gillot has managed at Lens, Sochaux and Bordeaux before being appointed the head coach of Shanghai Shenhua in December 2014.

It’s seems likely the deal for Tiote could still be completed this week.

Comments welcome.

Would not surprise me if this is the reason we have not signed anyone yet need his 60k a week wages off the bill before we get anyone else in !!!

Very odd. So Tiote gets to sit in a hotel by a pool somewhere getting paid for it while this other club dally over whether they want him or not? Bring him back and get him training at least, if they want him then they should have thought this through.

Spoof – YouTube is usually misleading. That might be one time wonder.Interms of top flight games- PL,Europa league, country etc, Townsend has better experience. Not to mention Townsend has been training with a top club unlike a championship club as in case of Philips.

    Lee
I agree, might be wrong but MA won’t want to be paying Townsend a wage until Tiote is off the pay roll.

My main worry about Townsend is if Pochettino does not think he is hard working enough for Spurs then how will he do for us?

We bullied West Ham in that first half because all of our front 4 was pressing and winning the ball if Townsend wont do it then our system wont work

    Seems very unprofessional

    @Toon KK

Also this is a disaster if Tiote doesnt leave now because although he has looked motivated recently I suspect its because he knew he was getting to leave in January and if he comes back without getting his move ….

Springy, back’s no better mate. Had a good day Friday and convinced myself I could get to the west ham game in my wheelchair, but woke up Saturday unable to move again. Might need risky surgery according to the specialist, which involves ‘cement’ being injected into the spine. It can result in paralysis which is why he hopes it might sort itself out. Been nearly four months now so it don’t look too clever. Rather risk it than spend my life in bed though. Sat up too long already, so need to lie down again. Later hopefully.

    Bobbybee

You’re having a bit of a crap time and fingers crossed they’ll sort you out.

Just take an example from Chancel – keep smiling through your pain. You’ll beat it!
