This Could be Newcastle´s Plan B If Berahino Bid Fails

9:40 am, Thursday, January 21st, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 203 Comments

26 year-old Corinthians and former AC Milan striker Alexandre Pato will be arriving at Chelsea this week and that will see Loic Remy fall even further down the totem pole at the south London club.

Loic Remy is very keen to play first team football thorough the rest of the season, so he has some hope of making the French squad for the Euro 2016 finals to be played in France in June – and he will not get that at Chelsea.

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle United - White Hart Lane

Loic Remy – when on loan at Newcastle

With Pato´s arrival it´s almost certain that Loic Remy will be made available by new manager Guus Hiddink  Remy but Newcastle at the moment are trying to sign West Brom striker Loic Remy.

Newcastle do have a plan B if they cannot get Berahino in the next couple of days and we have to believe that could be to go all-out to get Loic in on loan, because he´s a proven Premier League goalscorer and would settle very quickly at Newcastle.

While on loan during the 2013-2014 season for us he scored 14 league goals in 26 Premier League appearances for the side – a good record.

However, his history with Newcastle is not all that great and he turned us down for bottom-placed QPR three years ago when we were again in relegation trouble.

Loic also turned Newcastle down at the end of his loan spell on Tyneside because he wanted to sign for a bigger club playing in the Champions League.

He failed a medical in Boston so didn´t join Liverpool,  but he then signed on at Chelsea very late in the 2014 summer transfer window – but has not played much for the Blues and has never been a regular first team starter.

He could do a good job for us this season and he´s a better option than signing 30 year-old Bafe Gomis for £7M from Swansea.

Why not keep the £7M for the new striker who will be coming in permanently over the summer and go all out to get Loic in for a relatively small loan fee.

What do  you think?

Comments welcome.

I agree mate as good as any and would be available way cheaper than Bera

Would be available for the short term as well even if just a loan as would Remy

  • 7 Jail for Ashley // Jan 21, 2016 at 9:51 AM

Shelvey seems very entrenched in the idea that all Newcastle fans fans are from crime riddled council estates where there is a fine line of being a succes by getting a job in a factory or going to jail for drugs ?

F@ckin hell Jazzy you read my mind !!

Beharinho hasn’t got a very good goals to games ratio, surely there’s better out there for that kind of money. Will be a sickner if Austin grabs 1 in two for Soton.

Is Jazzy talking to himself here???

A short term plan B is god, Remy to the left of the front 3 would be a good option to have and give us back up for Mitro as and when required.

Doumbia is a machine, unfortunately wrong age wrong agent and probably out of our wage range.

Who knows bud. I personally thought we were entrenched in the French market or constantly looking in the bargain basement.

If we were to land Bera for 18-20 mill after Shelvey at 12. Would you say that is a definite shift in transfer policies we have adopted for so many seasons ?

I was dreaming a little yesterday and thinking about if we got Remy and Berihinio.

A front 3 Remy Mitro Berihinio, liked the thought of that but struggled to put 3 behind them who’d cope.

It’d be nice to have that headache though

be damn exciting to watch going forward, Defensively not so good lol !

  • 27 Munster Mag // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:11 AM

Jail, either Austin didnt fancy the north east, or we were badly wrong footed. Given that we have been limked with him for ages, and neither party cooled the link, i think we were wrong footed. I dont think our MD is the problem at Newcastle as such, but I think he was wrong footed here. Its a steal for Southampton and if he stays fit he will score a hatful. The guys on here who scoffed at his suitability will look a bit daft then. Anyoine who scored 18 goals for QPR has to be looked at seriously. I dont care if he isnt tall enough.fast enough or doesnt suit the daft FIFA typoe teams that guys dream about on here – if he bags 18 goals he is good. But then , many of our fans would refuse Mickey Quinn now because he wasnt athletic enough for goodness sake.

Chelsea are reigning champions and consistently fight for the title let’s not underestimate one of the best teams in the league

My point was more Chelsea are a very unique club. Also Remy has proven he can do it in the prem whereas Roma mustn’t of though Doumbia could make it in theirs

  • 34 optimistic prime // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:19 AM

    Munster

    You remember Mitchu?

Why wasn’t there a massive fight for his signature, there’s plenty of other teams who need a foward as much or more than us.

The only people shouting for Austin to go to a Pl club where pundits and papers, we all know they know SFA.

  • 35 Jail for Ashley // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:25 AM

    Jazzyp,
Yes and no, it would definitely suggest a change as Shelvey was the first British player with PL experience we have paid a fee for over five years, personally I think the Beranhio thing is another smokescreen fiasco. It would definitely show that there hasn’t been a change if Remy or Ba were available for reaso anle fees and wages and we did buy Berahino simply because he fits our profile. Our buy with sell on has largely been a failure up to now and is too rigid.

  • 36 WWSBRD // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:27 AM

The only reason people complained about Austin going to the pl was the fee QPR wanted

  • 37 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:31 AM

Austin wasn’t really what we needed anyway.

And imagine QPR wanted £15M and got £4M. How wrong we were to oppose an offer fit him in the summer…not!!

  • 40 Jail for Ashley // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:33 AM

QPR must have written off the idea of being promoted to risk letting him go

  • 41 optimistic prime // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:35 AM

    Ww

I think Austin went for the fair market price. People where shouting he’s worth this and that, Qpr doubled his valuation.

He was probs worth 7/8m in summer tops.I don’t think he’ll get more than a dozen in a pl season again, no team are going to work for him like Qpr did.

I’d have paid 4 as a back up striker just don’t think he’s good enough to be the main man at a pl club. He’ll not start for Southampton regularly IMO.

I doubt in a year or two I’ll be complaining we missed out on him.

I don’t think Mitrovic is up to being a starting PL striker right now

  • 45 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:42 AM

Nit fussed in the least about missing out on Austin, I doubt we were even interested to be honest. £4million is a decent price, but not a steal, seemed like he was already out of Hasselbaink’s plans for QPR moving forwards anyway.

The guy probably wouldn’t have been keen on a move north regardless, he has his academy down on the south coast, and was down that way at Poole before he got his big break, think his Mrs is from round that way as well.

If he does well, good for him, if he doesn’t who cares! Either way, it would still have little bearing on how he would have done here.

  • 46 BandB // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:43 AM

I see The Second Coming was cancelled yesterday….again.

So, the 17th richest football club has FINALLY decided to spend some money from the CLUB budget on footballers. When faced with relegation….again.

Hurray. Bet the others wish THEY’D thought of that. Once again, we lead the field in innovation.

It’s good. It’s about bloody time. Let’s hope it works.

It’s not “I told you so” material. (One can almost hear the itching.)

  • 47 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:45 AM

    WW,
Austin wouldn’t be able to play the target man role as well as Mitro, Zamora had to do that for him at QPR. Without the hold up play of our target man we can’t/won’t move up the pitch as effectively as we would not hold on to the ball as well. So, whilst Mitro isn’t scoring, we would have far less opportunities for all players if we had Austin up front.

  • 48 WWSBRD // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:45 AM

    JfA
Yeah me too mate the anti England stigma hasn’t gotten me yet

And k do like Jordan Henderson haha but am an odd case as I would happily see Sunderland consistently 2nd in the league as long as we were first

  • 49 Jib // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:45 AM

I’d laugh me head off if Mitro scored a hattrick on Saturday and we told WBA to get lost.

  • 50 WWSBRD // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:48 AM

    Lil
So we can just have 1 strategy in our play? Target man that’s it?

  • 51 jazzyp // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:48 AM

    WWS

I agree mate on Chelsea. But whoever thinks Seydou is not a talent knows nothing about football. the only problem is his age now and the reason Roma might no have been impressed is the fact he has had quite a few niggling injuries, Hence not much game time.
His record speaks for itself and I think when we were linked with him 2 or 3 seasons ago the blog went in to overdrive.
If Marseille can bring him in then there is no reason for us to not try given our circumstances up front.
Whether a loan deal or permanent I would be more than happy with any.

  • 52 optimistic prime // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:48 AM

    Ww

I think Mitro was outstanding in his hold up play and bringing others into the game against wham, has been in others to.
He’s a big reason the team have played so well in recent weeks by holding the ball and stopping it going straight back.

He’s probably made more chances for others than he’s had himself in recent weeks but doesn’t get the credit for that.

He brings way more than Perez who’s idolised, IMO he’s the one who shouldn’t be starting.

Mitro needs one off the arse and he’ll start banging them in, I’ve got a tenna on for him to score a hat trick at Watford.

  • 53 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:50 AM

    Jib,
And I’m sure West Brom would be equally amused if later that week Mitro picked up and injury in training ruling him out for 6 weeks and we went back toWest Brom and they told us to F Off.

A reaction like you suggest would demonstrate levels of idiocy at board level in the club that even there most ardent detractors wouldn’t accuse them of.

  • 54 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:51 AM

    WW,
Nope, but Austin doesn’t offer us more than a box player which doesn’t suit the rest of our squad, hence why many are arguing we need a more mobile pacy forward to give us alternative options.

  • 55 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:51 AM

    WW,
We have a box player in Cisse.

  • 57 Munster Mag // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:52 AM

Lil, that doesnt make sense. Any player who never comes to Newcastle can therefore not be evaluated as a miss by us, because it would have little bearing on how he would have done for NUFC ? That could apply to any player in the world ! I thunk we have lost out because he seems to be a goal scorer and cost buttons. If he scores regularly for Southampton, yes I think we can say we lost out. We could also say we didnt lose out on Mahrez ( for example ) as we would never have known how he would have done here. My guess is that he would have done fine!

  • 58 SuperShearer // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:52 AM

  • 60 Munster Mag // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:55 AM

Jesper, we were deffo right not to go for him in the summer. By sticking out for so much money, Ferdinand made a bit of a fool of himself. Instead of maybe getting 8-9 mill, they got half a season out of him , and 4 mill.

Not saying he’s a bad player mate am no expert on him by any means but I like what I’ve seen

My point was just he seemed to fail at a big team again I wouldn’t be against him but I am curious of why Roma didn’t like him if it was injuries surely we aren’t the club for him?

    op
Our striker should be putting the ball in the back of the net mate and Mitro (as much as I like him) clearly struggles to do that

He can make all the chances he wants but we aren’t winning because we aren’t scoring, we didn’t go all out to buy a striker to not score

  • 63 hibbitt // Jan 21, 2016 at 10:58 AM

you just have to look at our injury record to see why we need more cover in most positions to say we don’t need another forward is madness

  • 67 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 21, 2016 at 11:00 AM

    Munster,
Evaluate away mate, but just cause a player does okay somewhere it doesn’t mean he would do anywhere else. Austin wouldn’t suit our squad or the way we play, he may suit a squad like Southampton’s better, I honestly haven’t watched them that much to see how they have been playing.

So by your logic every player that never comes to us is missed by Newcastle as well? I really don’t understand your argument on that. I never actually said you couldn’t say we missed out anyway, I said I’m not fussed about missing out.

Not sure what Mahrez has to do with anything.

Not if we don’t create chances in the box. We are only doing that now because of Mitro’s all round game. If Austin replaced him we lose that and don’t create as many chances, as evidenced the last 18 months.

Yeah, Cisse hasn’t been fit and we have been trying to get rid of him because he doesn’t suit our style of play anymore.

  • 75 optimistic prime // Jan 21, 2016 at 11:05 AM

Strikers are obvs to score goals but other areas of their game are just as important.

All 3 goals against Man U came from Mitro putting himself about, Austin Perez and even Vardy wouldn’t have even been challenging for any of those balls.

I can accept a striker not scoring if he’s contributing to us winning the game.
If I had the choice of a striker who’d get you 15 goals a season or one who got 5 but made 25, I’d take the latter.

  • 76 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 21, 2016 at 11:06 AM

    Jail,
Yeah, Shane Long would be a good signing, too long in the tooth probably for our board, and a paper was reporting Saints turned down a scouter bid of £8million the day after Austin signed.

Again though, he wouldn’t score lots of goals, but I don’t think that is what Macca is working towards. I think he wants 4 or 5 who can chip in with around 10 plus a few from others to make up the difference. I reckon we are only missing 10 goal players on the right of our front 4 at the moment.

  • 77 Jail for Ashley // Jan 21, 2016 at 11:06 AM

I think you need a finer balance than that, although Emile Heskey made a canny living out of it.

My point buddy is if we are prepared to go and pay 20-25 mill for Bera, Who cannot get in the West brom team for whatever reason. And has had one good season in his career.
Then me personally would sooner go out and buy Doumbia who would be available for around the 10 mill mark, As what is currently being quoted from Marseille with the option to buy. And also bring in Jetro willems and somebody like Ben yedder.
Doumbia……Willems and Ben yedder or Berahino ??
No brainer really. Then that free’s up the money we wouldn’t have to spend on Townsend for a CB in this transfer window

Should we really be concerned about value for money, personally I feel we got Wijnaldum for half the price of what we should have paid but will the club then go and use that saving elsewhere, its the same when selling, if we sell Tiote for £8m rather than £5m would that extra £3m go back into the transfer kitty, history has said it won’t, so seeing as we need a striker and Berahino appears to be top of the list lets just spend the money and get, yes Austin may well have been about £16m cheaper but would getting him have allowed us to get another £16m player, I very much doubt it, so for me value for money at our club does not exist.

I’d agree with that, I was exaggerating the point.
I’ve said I’d drop Perez, it’s because I wouldn’t drop Mitro and Perez doesn’t compliment him.

We’ve changed again now and Gini is in the 10, Mitro needs a settled side for a bit and a smidge of luck then it’ll all click IMO.

Now we have Shelvey we should start playing further up the pitch and there should be more space and opportunities.
He’s pretty much been by himself with no one else pulling runners away etc.
He’s been trying to hard IMO and it’s getting to him.

I think he’s done really well in last few weeks with the right attitude, the pressure on him should ease a little now and hopefully his confidence is there.

I have a lot of faith in him and only time will tell, if he gets 3 against Watford I’ll raise a couple dozen to him.

  • 87 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 21, 2016 at 11:18 AM

    WWS,
I think the move of Gini into the centre was the correct one from Macca, and one that was fairly obvious to most watching. Whenever he played left our attacks broke down because he cut inside and narrowed the play significantly. His movement in and around Mitro is far better than Perez, who often failed to get close enough.

Now, with Perez out wide, we still narrow the pitch, but not as much and Gini ‘s movement creates greater opportunities. It isn’t really a surprise that we have looked more threatening because of it, and finally started creating sufficient chances. Mitro created all our best chances against Man U, and without him up top we would most likely have lost.

He has 4 goals so far, I think he will end in double figures for the season provided we continue to play as we did against West Ham, a decent return for a Prem centre forward, especially at this stage of his career. Add better crossers of the ball on either wing and he would get more.

    hibbit,
I think the reason we weren’t scoring goals was because we didn’t bring in a midfielder of Shelvey’s ilk in the summer to help us transition play forward in a more controlled manner, and also because we played Gini out wide on the left who kept coming inside narrowing the pitch and reducing our options. Is it 5 goals in 2 league matches since Gini moved central? 3 of them against what had been one of the tightest defences in the league.

You got that right WE aren’t scoring.
You can’t blame Mitro for us not winning us games. How many glaring misses has Gini SDJ Sissoko and Perez missed.

Seems to me everyone sees Mitros misses but forget it’s a team sport and how many glaring opportunities his team mates have missed.

Sissoko has twice blasted over with Mitro unmarked in 6yd box when a simple pass would have been a tap in. There’s plenty of other cases of that, when the shoes on the other foot Mitro lays it off.
Maybe he should be more Gready.

IMO his misses are no worse and aren’t more often than his team mates, he’s a young lad in a new league and new team.
I’m not giving up on him yet.

And who is giving up on him?

  • 100 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 21, 2016 at 11:31 AM

    WWS,
Where would Austin fit? I agree, Perez is the most in danger of wing dropped if we bring someone in. He shouldn’t be on the left side, but Gini is several levels above in his preferred role at the moment. But Austin couldn’t replace Perez on the left. Berahino (and Remy) can play wide and through the centre. It gives us greater options if we are struggling for a breakthrough. That is my main argument against bringing Austin in, Austin offers no variation and unless we bring in wingers who will continually whip good crosses in he would be a huge disappointment in our side.

I was confident with the squad we had before the window opened provided Macca made the adjustments of bringing Gini more central and getting him closer to Mitro. I would have given Thauvin a chance on the left ahead of Perez mind, and think if we don’t bring anyone else in Aarons could well get a chance that side. But yes, I’m confident we will not get relegated and the team has more than enough to get the goals to keep us up.

    Simple question really mate

  • 106 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 21, 2016 at 11:35 AM

    hibbit,
That is the first league match where you could really say we have created a lot of chances. Play like that moving forwards and the goals will come. Like I say, Perez, Mitro will get 10+ this season (provided they stay in selection) Gini could get 15+. That gives us 35 plus what others have scored/will score and you are looking at a tally close to 50 which last season would have you around 8th highest scorers.

The right hand side of our attack is the one that worries me most in terms of the number of goals scored. Sissoko had a couple of great chances against the hammers (one set up superbly by a 15yard chest pass from Mitro) but didn’t. If you take away the Norwich game he has just 1 assist this season and no goals. That isn’t good enough, although his all round game has improved lately.

  • 107 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 21, 2016 at 11:38 AM

    WWS,
So Gini back on the left? Not for me, he has to play close to the front man, and Mitro through his all-round play is key to our game at the moment.

I think the squad is more than capable of staying up, the line up needed tweaking slightly. The addition of Shelvey is great, and it should have been done in the summer (not necessarily Shelvey, but that type of player).

Plenty of other clubs above us will drop points and I think we will climb up the table, not to an impressive position, but fairly comfortable.

Yeah, pretty much. That is why one or two more of the right players through the door would be good. Keeping Aarons and Saylor fit would go a long way to bolstering our squad, but 1 of the two is a long shot, both would be akin to a miracle.

With Shelvey bringing a new dimension to the team would it not be best to see how we do after a few games, Mitrovic is a good striker who does everything right but then fluffs his chances, a striker who fluffs his chances is actually a poor striker, but is Mitrovic a poor striker or a good one who is lacking confidence and needs a little bit of luck to sort himself out.

Personally I have seen enough from him to believe that he will be a £30m+ striker in the not to distant future.

I just get the feeling a lot think he won’t come good sooner rather than later.

I’m from the school of there should be goals from all parts of your team. No matter how good your fowards are there’s going to be games when defences nullify them. So goals from midfield and defenders are just as important if not more.

The 3 games we lost before Man U where due to some shocking misses from 3 or 4 players and we should have beat villa SDJ.

Mitro is 21 and under enough pressure, I’m not sure if there’s another 21yr old leading the line. If he’d scored another 5/6 people would be raving about him, I’m trying to keep a balanced view and looking at what he gives the team.

If he gets better service or more help upfront I’m really confident he’ll score.

Mitro is going to smash the Makems, I’ve seen it in my dreams!

Berahino would be great to play alongside Mitro, but I think Mitro has a lot more in the tank. He has shown great strength, positional awareness and some nice subtle touches in his link up play. I think he just needs to smash a few in by putting his laces through the ball and hitting it earlier ala Shearer. His confidence will grow and grow when he starts scoring regularly.

  • 123 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 21, 2016 at 11:50 AM

    WWS,
You said you would drop Perez for Austin, and play Austin centrally. I just naturally assumed that we were still going to play with someone on the left, and out of the rest of the 11 Gini was the most logical option.

I’d like a new striker in, I just don’t think Austin is the right type of player for us at the moment, so I’m not bothered we didn’t get him.

We may well have beaten West Ham without Shelvey, impossible to say for certain. Fairly sure most wouldn’t hav said we would have scored 3 against one of the tightest defences this season, yet we did, and we did it all without Shelvey.

Shelvey is good, but he isn’t the only player that can cause a threat. Gini moving centrally is far more important to us than the arrival of Shelvey when it comes to getting goals.

  • 124 SPRINGY // Jan 21, 2016 at 11:50 AM

Goals for there are important very much so but no team banks on staying up from their goal scoring CB they are mostly bonus goals if u like. It’s the striker u look at for goals

I get the feeling u think I don’t like Mitro, far from it I love the big mad Serbian get and I in no way blame him for not scoring or where we are that’s NUFCs fault completely they put the season on his shoulders which is hugely unfair on this 20 year old kid…he shouldn’t have to deal with that

But my point is we need the finished article right now or at least someone who can challenge/bench Mitro if nothing else so he can have a rest…he’s not scoring now what’s he going to be like when the league gets him jaded? He will tire late on in the season…in fact it’ll probably start soon

I think it’d be good for his development to bring someone to bench him for a bit

  • 128 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 21, 2016 at 11:57 AM

    OP,
Not a huge fan of Dummet, but he has been much improved of late. Same goes for Colo. Janmaat has been our least reliable defender all season for me. I’m not sold on Willems for similar reasons, he is another full back that prefers to get forward than defending.

Regardless of what Barca may do, a full back is still primarily a defensive position. That is the bread and butter of the role and if you fail in your defensive duties, then you aren’t a good full back. Janmaat gets caught upfield far too often, and has a torrid time against direct wingers.

My only worry is although he looks an intelligent guy on the pitch, he looks way off the pace at present.Maybe due to his lack of match fitness who knows.

Newcastle united ready to end there interest in Townsend
Steve McClaren is keen to add a winger to his squad and had a £10m offer for Townsend rejected last week. But despite an attempt to take the 24-year-old on loan with a view to signing him permanently in the summer, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has insisted he will only consider selling him.

That has led Newcastle to switch their attentions elsewhere, with Barcelona forward Sandro Ramírez understood to be on their wanted list. Having tried to sign the Spain Under-21 international in the summer, Ramírez, who can also play as a striker, is available on loan having rejected the chance to join Real Betis this week.

  • 133 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 21, 2016 at 12:02 PM

    Jazzy,
I think the only space for SDJ now is as back up to Mitro. He can bring others into the game higher up the pitch. Mitro is far from the quickest, so SDJ’s lack of pace shouldn’t adversely affect us there. Perez has to be the understudy for Gini at the moment.

The only other option I see is for SDJ to get fitter than he ever has been and potentially act as back up to Shelvey, but the fitness issue may be a stretch too far for him in that role these days.

  • 139 Spoof // Jan 21, 2016 at 12:07 PM

SDJ will struggle to get game time, he is a number 10 but with Gini he will never get an extended run, the only way SDJ would get an extended run is due to a long term injury to Gini or to play Gini on the left, playing Gini on the left has been discussed and I agree with most who say that he is wasted there and should stay in the middle.

Its a shame for De Jong as he is a good player but I would suggest that Thauvin even now still has a better chance of proving himself here than Siem, the more we here from Spurs the less likely we seem to get Townsend, I just cannot see us paying the full £14m and equally I cannot see Daniel Levy dropping the price, so if Thauvin is to stay and Perez continues to struggle for form maybe Thauvin might just get a chance.

  • 140 SPRINGY // Jan 21, 2016 at 12:09 PM

Sandro is essentially a striker who can play wide, rather than the other way round. At 20, he could have a big future in the game and is highly rated, but if we were to go for him as our other striker because he is cheaper then it would be fair to say the club haven’t learnt any lessons about league experienced players being useful.

Definatley don’t see him there permanently, even if we signed Willems I think Dummet would play until end of season. He’s a good honest defender, doesn’t get foward much but rarely gets roasted like Jaanmat and is rarely not where he should be. Not his best position but better than our specialist RB.

    WW

Mitros just another I think gets to much of a hard time especially given some of the performances out in by others.

I know what you mean by proven, I’m worried Berahinio would struggle ATM.
I don’t think Austin would score for us ATM due to our play. You could argue someone may have scored the ones Mitro would have scored but it’s all ifs and buts. I’m not sure barring Remy any of the names we’ve been linked with would guarantee goals and that would be if he fancied it.

It’s a tough one, I’d personally persist with Mitro. I have confidence he’ll come good very soon. Maybe wishfull thinking but the little changes recently have really improved our attacking play, especially the speed we move the ball foward which is ideal for a striker.

he could still come and yes Pochettino may have said that and meant it, but its Levy who is the problem, as always time will tell, personally I hope it does fall through as I feel need need a wide man on the left, Sissoko as an inside right with Janmaat and his runs are enough for the right I don’t see the need for him, I would rather call off Thauvin’s move to Marsielle and allow him, Perez and Aarons to fight for the left hand position.

  • 163 Jib // Jan 21, 2016 at 12:34 PM

When Marriner made the elite list 10 years ago he gave 3 yellows a game and a red every other game.
Last season he was down to giving a red every 5 games , he still gave about three yellows per game however.

  • 164 Belfast // Jan 21, 2016 at 12:39 PM

It leaves Sdj packing up and moving on.

Gini gets injured then Sissoko, Perez or Shelvey plays there.

He probably new his time was up when we signed his Dutch mate in the summer to be honest.

the thing is with the 3 u’ve mentioned is perez is not a left winger/sided player, just filling in and like i said earlier feel he’s looked jaded lately, thauvin although has’nt had a proper chance his confidence is desperately low and putting him in a struggling side wont help that….and aarons cant be relied on always injured, he needs slowly coaxed back or sent on loan to strengthen his game and get time on the pitch, not shooting you down to be a prick just stating what seems to be most peoples thoughts

  • 167 Jib // Jan 21, 2016 at 12:43 PM

Marriner got so much shit when he over-reacted to Francis Coquelin’s screams and theatrics that he will cut Mitro some slack this time I hope.

I see him being a CB of the future.
Impressive speed, he doesn’t look the quickest either. Had a feeling he must’ve had something as he’s been against some of the PL best right sided players and has never really been owned.

He may get foward more with someone in front who offers more protection and gives him the option.

    That’s not what I mean, I don’t think he’s a good LB just a very good defender.
Def think he’ll be a CB, can’t see him ever bombing on he’s to cautious.

Hes had plenty of space and opportunity to get foward, he just knows Perez and Gini aren’t going to cover him. If someone did cover he’d get foward but not much.

If we had another player like Jaanmat at LB we’d be conceding for fun, I don’t think either are the greatest in there position.
However I prefer the protection of Dummet to the rare good ball from Jaanmat.

Ideally we need a good combination of both, it’s good to get foward but they MUST be able to defend.

  • 174 Munster Mag // Jan 21, 2016 at 12:57 PM

Lil, that still doesnt make sense….

If he does well, good for him, if he doesn’t who cares! Either way, it would still have little bearing on how he would have done here.

Just because he does well in one place, doesnt mean he would have some well elsewhere – perhaps true, but he has done well at an awful side and is dangerous both in the air and on the ground. Austin isnt a Michael Owen, and whilst he isnt a monster either, he could have played off Mitro in a 442, when that suits or a 433 whem Mitro not fit. Not perfect but 4 mill isnt bad. Gini wont always be fit to play close to Mitro , and at 4m I feel he was worth a gamble. Of couse his move to Saints woud have had luttle bearing on how he would have done here, but that can be applied to any player. Southampton play a pacy european style of football and I still think he will do fine there, for 4 mill. Anyway, nee worries.

  • 177 Lindisfarne // Jan 21, 2016 at 1:05 PM

The only reason why making a deal for Berahin(?) would be difficult for Penfold is because it requires a decision being made. There is always a deal to be made that suits both parties, WBA know that they can demand a high price but also that having him remain at the club is not a good decision.

One possible solution would be a £18-20 transfer and a 50% cut of a future sale.

Elliot on Dummet in the Chron – Well said I think. He even thinks he’ll be a CB

“Paul Dummett has been the “rock” of Newcastle United’s starting line-up in recent weeks – according to in-form keeper Rob Elliot.

The United star feels that Dummett’s displays against pacy Premier League stars such as Anthony Martial and Erik Lamela have not received the praise they deserve.

And Elliot, one of the leaders in the Newcastle dressing room, feels Dummett is one of the main reasons United’s form has picked up in recent times.

Elliot told the Chronicle: “Dummy is an under-rated player. You do not see many players get past him. Anthony Martial could not get past him recently and at Tottenham it was the same for Erik Lamela.

“He is a rock for us. He does a great job for us and it goes un-noticed.”

Dummett could make his 50th start for the Magpies in the Premier League this weekend against Watford. Elliot hopes he has a long-term future at the club.

He said: “Paul will be a centre-half one day, but at the moment he’s doing a great job at left-back. He epitomises our hunger and desire.”

  • 188 BandB // Jan 21, 2016 at 1:21 PM

There are reports that the Thauvin “try before you buy” deal with OM required them to pay the full £12m we paid for him at the end of the loan.
If so, it seems we still expect to have it both ways….30 per cent over-priced when selling, 30 per cent discount when buying.
    We can’t really complain.
Ashley, does every single deal have to be a screw with you?

  • 189 Jail for Ashley // Jan 21, 2016 at 1:27 PM

I wonder if how well we played in the first half has a bearing on our getting players over the line and having to rely on ones already in the building.

  • 190 BandB // Jan 21, 2016 at 1:29 PM

“Right then Lee, ‘ere’s the deal this window….

“We screw them for ‘im, then we screw them for ‘im, then we fackin’ NAIL them for ‘im.

“Job’s a good ‘un. ‘Ow ‘ard can it be?”

  • 191 Jail for Ashley // Jan 21, 2016 at 1:30 PM

From a horses mouth. Dummet is Collos replacement and hopefully enough time bought to see if one of our own come good.

  • 192 Jail for Ashley // Jan 21, 2016 at 1:32 PM

And that folks is why we’re not being linked with CB’s or LB’s

  • 193 andrewsneill // Jan 21, 2016 at 1:35 PM

Surely if Dummett is seen as Colo’s replacement we need a left back even more as Haidara’s unlikely to be available for 40+ consecutive games?

  • 194 Jail for Ashley // Jan 21, 2016 at 1:49 PM

    andrewsneill,
You mustn’t have read the purple policy. Colback is the stand in LB should Dummet have to play at CB. Gouffran can kick a ball so he can be a DM. Sound outrageous, it is, but that’s why we’ve been in three relegation battles in the last four years.

  • 195 Munster Mag // Jan 21, 2016 at 1:54 PM

Dummetts a good defender and excellent cover. Plays it simple at centre half, marks tightly, happy to fight his height in the air. Fast once turned in right direction. Restricted ability going forward but a good honest defender. I like him defensively a lot

  • 196 nightfa11 // Jan 21, 2016 at 2:01 PM

Thauvin was tracked by barca a while back.. Swap him for Sandro?

  • 197 Munster Mag // Jan 21, 2016 at 2:01 PM

Jail i think we’ll get a decent centre half in the summer. Smc is having an influence. We wud never have bought shelvey under pardew or charva. We may have underspent in recent years but ashleys outlay now probably compares favourably with other clubs. But others have got more bangs for their buck. Thauvin has looked a poor signing from day 1 in my opinion. I think carr is under more pressure now, hopefully anyway

  • 198 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 21, 2016 at 2:01 PM

Dont know if it was because of his goal against Man Utd or the buzz of playing with Shelvey but Dummett was flying up and down the wing against West Ham had to double check it was him playing ! Was probably why he tweaked his hamstring as hes never ran that much in a game before lol!

Defensively he is excellent and I think he could become a really solid premiership centre half would also be good to have a local lad stay with the team and make a contribution !!

  • 199 Munster Mag // Jan 21, 2016 at 2:03 PM

Yes barca wud love thauvin. I do like his girlie though 🙂

  • 200 Jail for Ashley // Jan 21, 2016 at 2:03 PM

    Munster,
I like Dummet as well but I’d rather have a top quality LB and CB with Dummet as an option on the bench, if people rate him then he should be good enough to keep the first choice on their toes.

  • 201 jimmysmith // Jan 21, 2016 at 2:07 PM

We have the game against Watford, which in theory is winnable, then there’s the FA cup which means we only have the one game before the window ends. I suppose the club will view that time as expendable, and so use it to get the best deal possible, but we do need at least one more meaningful signing, an injection of pace and goal threat, and if we don’t get it, the window must then be seen as a failure, considering our league position.

  • 202 Jail for Ashley // Jan 21, 2016 at 2:07 PM

    Munster,
It’s too simplistic to say we would have never bought Shelvey with Pardew here, you don’t know that, it’s maybe realising how fcuked up the policy is that allowed us to get him and nothing to do with a change of manager, that and him being unsettled with a supposed attitude problem. Ha, we only sign players with the right attitude. Unless they are going cheap.
