New Talks – Newcastle Getting Closer To Signing Top Target

3:59 pm, Friday, January 22nd, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 176 Comments

The Mirror has just released a report where they say that Newcastle manager Steve McClaren is pushing hard for a £10M deal for Spurs winger Andros Townsend and is increasingly confident of getting the deal done this month.

The report says the new talks have taken place and Newcastle are pleased with the way they have been progressing.

andros townsend

Andros Townsend – deal getting closer?

£10M would be a good deal for Newcastle with news that Daniel Levy was holding out for £14M – but you never really know what exactly is going on with these transfers.

After all the fuss over Cheick Tiote and problems he was supposed to be having in joining Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua a few days ago, Steve McClaren said today he saw no problems with the move and expected it to go through.

If Newcastle can get Townsend in it would be a great acquisition for Newcastle – because the England International winger will give give Steve McClaren different options up front.

The Mirror are reporting today that new talks have taken place and that Newcastle are happy with how they have been progressing.

That’s even though the report says that Daniel Levy, the Tottenham Chairman is pushing once again for more money from the Tyneside club.

The 24-year-old old fashioned winger is reported to be very keen to join Newcastle and is pushing Tottenham to give him the move he wants his month, after being frozen out of the first team by manager Mauricio Pochettino this season.

Andros can certainly help Newcastle in our relegation battle.

Comments welcome.

Just gerrim signed up along with a LB, CB and a striker who can actually put the ball into the net!

  • 2 hibbitt // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:01 PM

jamie sterry could play there i have seen him play lb but is considered a rb by the club sometimes needs must far better then aarons defending

  • 3 Mag52 // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:05 PM

Get Townsend in sharpish. We’re looking for a LB.

  • 5 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:11 PM

I think it’s evident with so few leaving that we won’t bring that many in…or any in!

…players like Tiote, Marv, Gouf, Willo, Saylor and Rivi needs to leave

  • 6 sparky55 // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:15 PM

Might be why Maclaren is being rumoured to include Rivi tomorrow and the week after so the world can take a look at him and see if he can be moved on.

    Re Townsend: pur-lease no!!!

  • 8 Jail for Ashley // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:19 PM

After the great first half display against W Ham the powers that be probably think we have enough in the tank to avoid the drop. The Watford result will depend on whether we get more players over the line, it’s amazing how this new regime think very similarly to the old one !

  • 9 sparky55 // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:23 PM

    One swallow and all that!

  • 10 U.S Magpie // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:29 PM

I for one like Townsend, he knows the prem and is an England international so I don’t understand why some don’t like this option as a signing. Lets look at the crap we purchased over the last few years, I would put him on the left wing before all of them, he can also play wing back and know he comes up with goals every so often. Get him in and a CB plus striker and the team should be covered to stay up.

  • 11 NoahJ // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:33 PM

I’ve said it on another thread, but Townsend is worth no more than £8m, and Levy’s approach is absolutely farcical- one quick glance at any Spurs fan site will tell you how laughable talk of £14m is.

I just don’t know why we’re pursuing him as a priority when our defence is paper thin and our strikers can’t score. If anything, midfield is probably our strongest area, and yes we need a decent winger in the long-term, but this can wait until the summer if it comes at the expense of the other positions

  • 12 jazzyp // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:34 PM

Rotonda will be happy ….. Not

    What new regime?

  • 14 Spoof // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:40 PM

He has rarely player for Spurs, not just this season but any season, he has always been back up, they clearly want him gone yet they appear to be making it as difficult as possible, I really do hope that the deal falls through, £14m for someone who is on a par with Obertan is ridiculous.

  • 15 martoon // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:47 PM

U.S Magpie @10 I agree I think Townsend is quite decent but I also agree with NoahJ that he’s not worth £14m – £10m tops I would say.
Spoof @14 to compare him with Obertan is ridiculous he’s shown he’s a much better footballer than Obertan who can hardly kick the ball!

  • 16 hibbitt // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:51 PM

not even sure he’s that good would rather buy a LB and give the players we have a chance

  • 17 Spoof // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:53 PM

yes perhaps he is a bit better than that but do we really need him, where would Sissoko play if we get him, we would have to suffle the entire team around to find a place for him, and for me Sissoko and Janamat give us enough going forward on the right hand side, if it aint broke don’t fix it and Sissoko is miles better than Townsend

  • 18 lesh // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:55 PM

I hear what you’re saying but there’s always the faint hope that somebody with some influence at SJP might just see fans’s views and shove them in front of Charnley’s nose – preferably when he’s awake!

  • 19 goommy // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:56 PM

LB? Time to shine for Mbabu lad!!

  • 20 Jail for Ashley // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:56 PM

  • 22 U.S Magpie // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:58 PM

Yes agree not worth 14 Mil, here’s the thing. We have purchased two midfielders last week, is the idea with Townsend to play him at left back and try and move dummett to CB covering that area for now, and then just purchase a striker. Maybe Newcastle’s way to cover all positions.

  • 23 lesh // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:59 PM

If you were Pieters and had been ignored by us already, would you be interested in SJP?

And Stoke are doing ok thank you very much.

  • 24 DevonToon // Jan 22, 2016 at 4:59 PM

I find it quite strange how short people’s memories are. That season back when townsend was at QPR he had a blinding season there. Then played a bit for spurs and at the time where saying they didn’t really miss bale as they had the English equivalent. For what ever reason he’s fallen out of favour, but he could be a half decent signing if he can find that sort of form again. I’d still prefer to actually give thauvan a fair crack in th 1st team.

  • 34 LGFUAD21 // Jan 22, 2016 at 5:09 PM

I’d just loan Enrique as we need A lb in desperately.

It’s clear the club sees dummet as a player that can develop into a CB long term here which is why we are seeing him get so much time.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they planned on getting willems in summer and letting colo and dummet battle for CB with the idea being that dummet has the position locked down by Christmas.

  • 35 Spoof // Jan 22, 2016 at 5:13 PM

He is left footed but if SM wants him on the left then why not go for an established left winger rather than hope that a right winger will convert, if that is what SM is doing then he needs his head banged against a wall, and very bloody hard as well

  • 36 geordie157 // Jan 22, 2016 at 5:16 PM

  • 38 SPRINGY // Jan 22, 2016 at 5:20 PM

i think a quality left winger would cost a fortune as well….only other english left wingers around are likes of sinclair…that we’ve linked to anyway.

  • 41 Rotonda heights // Jan 22, 2016 at 5:26 PM

10M for Townsend is still 3M too much and blows out Perez, Aarons and even Thauvin.

Another misleading headline as I thought Berahino was our top target, ie a potential goal scorer.

Watch spurs now get a far better player in Sandro ramirez. when we will ever learn.

  • 46 Mister Tuff // Jan 22, 2016 at 5:32 PM

Looks like Thauvin has been on the phone to the OM goalkeeper -his mate – stating he wants to return to OM.
No point in keeping him – it just has not worked out for him.

  • 47 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 22, 2016 at 5:33 PM

“Man hours”? WTF is Blackley on about? What a knacker.

  • 48 Spoof // Jan 22, 2016 at 5:34 PM

Perez, Aarons, Sissoko, Thauvin, Goofy, Gini, Marveaux and even Obertan can play out wide, we have more than enough for wide areas, we don’t need Townsend, the only reason we appear to lack width is due to how SM sets them up.

    Berahino is who we need

  • 49 U.S Magpie // Jan 22, 2016 at 5:36 PM

Lesh, yes sorry what was I thinking that Charney was thinking and Ashley was allowing SM to think.

  • 54 Goofy // Jan 22, 2016 at 5:44 PM

Stuck a fiver on 3-2 Toon, Winjaldum to score first 175/1

Silly bet considering we’ve only scored 5 away from home but we seem to have built up some confidence and with Shelvey to feed Perez, Wini and Mitro with Janmmat to fire up the wing swinging a few crosses in, I’m quite confident for the win, the score line would be a bonus.

  • 55 Rotonda heights // Jan 22, 2016 at 5:45 PM

put it this way Pochettino wants rid of Townsend and is keen on Ramirez. Enough said.
We’ll end up with a knacker like townsend while spuds get ramirez or Berahino, possibly both.

    I lie.
I DO remember mentioning that The Mirror had reported that Austin was a done deal back in the summer.

  • 61 Mister Tuff // Jan 22, 2016 at 5:53 PM

Jib Jibberish – you will no doubt have noticed a judge today slagging of Mr Tubbs :-

“A SENIOR judge has condemned the “intimidatory, muscular tactics” used by Mike Ashley’s sportswear company Sports Direct in a failed bid to have Rangers chairman Dave King punished for an alleged breach of a gagging order.”

You will note the inclusion of the word muscular. This does not mean that Mr Tubbs has been doing some training and has become a body builder and therefore very muscular.
The word muscular was used figuratively to describe the nature of Mr Tubbs tactics.

There now – with that explanation I’ve saved you a Google Search. No need to send your thanks.

The squad seems poorly built for any kind of decent season. We have 2 experienced CB’s that we absolutely rely on. If either get injured we’re stuffed. All our LB’s and stand-ins are injured apparently and we’re weak at that position even when they’re fit. We have 1 decent RB (at least decent in the attacking sense). We have no decent backup to Elliot with Krul injured. We’re thin on the wings unless we play someone out of position there. We have kids as strikers with no fit and experienced senior player at that position. Exactly what have we built during Ashley’s tenure?

I cannot understand why a number of bloggers are so concerned at us paying what they consider to be over the odds for this player or that player.
At present the focus is on what Levy is asking for Townsend. So what if we end up by paying a bit more than the guy might be worth say in the Summer ? We need someone like him now. Macca seems to want him and presumably has plans for how he will assist our relegation battle. The window is coming to an end.
Ashley is the only one who should be fretting about the cost of players, and he undoubtedly is, but the fact is that the selling clubs know that, at the moment, they have him over a barrel.
I don’t care what we pay. If the player can do the job of keeping us in the premiership, then I’ll be happy, and I’m sure Ashley will too.

If this club believes that avoiding relegation is worth breaking the bank for, they have 10 days to show it.
Who thinks the cold-blooded decision Villa have taken couldn’t happen here?
Though they’d never say, of course.

  • 97 lesh // Jan 22, 2016 at 7:17 PM

The Mag’s written that Napoli have made a first offer for Sissoko and will be back with another. PSG said to be watching too. The Mag reckons that to buy, we’ve got to sell – or could they have meant freeing up squad places?

As Ashley said in his famous May announcement, we don’t need it want to sell our too players, can we expect any offers for Sissoko or any other of our best players to be rejected?

Surely it’d make more sense to pay up some of the players who haven’t and shouldn’t figure in future plans? Ah, but that’ll upset Charnley’s budget plans and we don’t want him to explain the variances to Ashley do we when he might ask Penfold why he hadn’t budgeted for that.

Despite Ashley’s May statement of intent, he shouldn’t have expected a myopic Muppet like Penfold to take his vision to reality.

So, despite any ambition seemingly voiced by Ashley, we’re staring relegation in the face yet again – under Charnley’s superb leadership.

No matter what the outcome this season, Charnley should be given a different role at the Club and replaced by a football-savvy MD who has a good track record and dare we say it, a personality that inspires confidence. As is, we’re stuck with Charnley who has neither drive nor character.

  • 100 toon kk // Jan 22, 2016 at 7:19 PM

I totally agree, your right it’s surprising how many go on about costs of players, it proves how MA has lowered the expectations of how people think the club should be run. There’s loads of player’s over priced but if the club want to spend let them. He’s still a far better player than alot of our flops.
Although we need a quality striker and a very good defender I don’t think MA budget will stretch that far.

Back in November, the Chronicle and others were briefed that the club would have to sell in order to buy.
And that’s not about transfer fees. It’s about wages. It’s about who’s eligible.
Whoever thought we would get this done in just a month?

As you say, good for Harper but why the hell didn’t we sign him up to cover unitil the end if the season?

Again, penny pinching no doubt, risking relegation for the sake of spending a few quid for an experienced pair of hands.

Charnley just doesn’t get it, clueless.

That’s the point I was making. It’d be better to pay up the contracts of those players taking up a squad place but aren’t good enough rather than sell one top player.

Charnley doesn’t even see the box let alone be able to think outside of it.

He should be the first out of the door come the end if the season.

I’m sure I read somewhere that Henri Saivet is quite happy to play fullback .
Thinking about it , that could be the best position to start him.

  • 138 Jail for Ashley // Jan 22, 2016 at 8:42 PM

I’m sure I read Saviet was a converted winger/CM who probably said at some stage in his career that’ll he’ll play anywhere to help the team, ideal full back or back up to our keepers.

  • 144 welshgeordie9 // Jan 22, 2016 at 9:46 PM

What’s the point of getting rid of tiote, put him along side with shelvey and saivet on the left of the three in midfield with Gini in the middle and sissoko on the right, it’s not rocket science.

  • 145 welshgeordie9 // Jan 22, 2016 at 9:48 PM

Basically you sit a capsule full of people on top of a controlled explosion and WHOOSH !!!!

  • 155 Our Toon // Jan 22, 2016 at 10:38 PM

It’s bonkers mate we should have signed him, Darlow could have learned and the players would have had someone who knew the club, the people / fans and more importantly a more experienced head around the dressing room.

  • 156 Our Toon // Jan 22, 2016 at 10:39 PM

I seriously hope he doesn’t line up like that tomorrow. Gini is by far our best player and should be in the no10 role, dropping him back into a CM role will only negate us.

Everybody, including Sunderland, see the sense in signing Harper apart from our forward-thinking club.

The outlay would’ve been peanuts against the cost of playing with a rookie keeper. Surely they must remember last season? Nah, maybe not!

Some highlights from the last few years of Townsend..

Townsend is naturally left footed although just as good on his right.

McClaren wants him to be our left sided attacking mid and to be honest I think he is a perfect fit.

Hopefully this latest injury crisis makes them bring in another defender this window though. I get they want Willems but he is injured. If he was fit they probably would have been in for him by now!

  • 171 beefman13 // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:07 AM

Shteve may go three at the back like he did against them in the FA cup.

    Mbemba Colo Mbabu

    Perez Mitrovic Riviere

Boys if we are going to make the comparison to Obertan then let it be noted Obertan has more assists in 3 seasons than Townsend he’s so ball greedy he doesn’t deserve to be near the Tottenham team let alone Newcastle Chadli would be a better option considering his is on the fringes of the first team there

  • 176 Jail for Ashley // Jan 23, 2016 at 6:33 AM

We’ve heard from them that they don’t dwell on past mistakes and therefore don’t learn from them, Steve Harper would have been the most ideal player out there to cover a position, people are completely overlooking that we are desperately short in if Elliott picks up an injury. Mclaren could well bemoan the fact that it is freakishly unlucky to have both keepers out but Elliott has previous injury issues. Harper wouldn’t have to immediately start if Elliott was injured but it would relieve a lot of pressure on Woodman knowing that a safe pair of hands like Stdvie Harper was behind him.
