Lascelles, Aarons And Saivet Get Starts For Newcastle

watford FCnufc emblem

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren has just announced the side for the game at Watford today and it looks like Jamaal Lascelles will partner Fabricio Coloccini in central defense and Chancel Mbemba will move to left back – in for the injured Paul Dummett.

Teams:

Watford (4-4-2): Heurelho Gomes; Juan Carlos Paredes, Miguel Britos, Craig Cathcart, Nathan Ake; Etienne Capoue, Valon Behrami, Ben Watson, Jose Manuel Jurado; Troy Deeney (c), Odion Igalho
Substitutes: Costel Pantilimon, Allan Nyom, Sebastian Prodl, Adlene Guedioura, Almen Abdi, Ikechi Anya, Nordin Amrabat

Newcastle (4-4-1-1): Rob Elliot; Daryl Janmaat, Jamaal Lascelles, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Chancel Mbemba; Moussa Sissoko, Henri Saivet, Jonjo Shelvey, Rolando Aarons; Georginio Wijnaldum; Aleksandar Mitrovic
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Steven Taylor, Sylvain Marveaux, Yoan Gouffran, Florian Thauvin, Ayoze Perez, Emmanuel Riviere

It’s a first start for new signing Henri Saivet and he partners Jonjo Shelvey in a new central midfield for Newcastle.

Perez has been dropped for Rolando Aarons so perhaps Rolando has looked good in training.

That’s not a bad team assuming Lascelles can have a solid game alongside the experienced Newcastle captain.

As expected Florian Thauvin is back on the bench and his loan move to Marseille may not go through if we cannot get Andros Townsend or a suitable alternative through the door this month.

This is what Steve McClaren has said about today’s game:

“We’ve played Watford a couple of times and in the cup we were very unlucky.” “They have got a home game and they will be buoyed and confident because they have beaten us twice, so it is up to us to go there and give a good performance so we can get the right result.

“They haven’t won for a few games and need a win. Everyone has a little dip and they will be looking to come out of it, and we will be looking to go there and make sure they don’t.”

“It’s a difficult game for us. Watford are a very capable team and with their two strikers – Deeney and Ighalo, they are capable of winning any game.”

“They will be determined to turn their form around. They are dangerous opponents – we know that from the last time we played them – but it’s about what we do with our performance.”

“We want quality and we’ve got quality, you saw that against West Ham.” “What we’ve got is a couple of new signings and players who are starting to adapt well to the Premier League.

“Gini Wijnaldum is a perfect example with his performances, and Chancel Mbemba has also got better as they’ve adapted.” “You’ve seen it with the teams who have come up as well. Bournemouth, Norwich and Watford have adapted to the league and have given it a good go.

“The quality from top to bottom is close and there is always going to be a fine line between winning and losing in this league.”

Over 70% of fans think we will win this game today.

Good lineup from SM, Aarons there to give the width as Mbemba is playing LB. good luck to Lascelles, let’s get 3 points today

glad to see arrons getting his first start 4-2-3-1 formation i guess.

I had us down as a win earlier in the week but changed my mind now we’ve got the 2 extra injuries he fact he’s gone 4-2-3-1 tells you he’s more determined to not concede that score.
    predict 1-1 draw.

    Well about bloody time 🙂

  • 9 AncientC // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:07 PM

    nufc.co.uk have confimed it is a 4-4-1-1.

  • 10 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:07 PM

This setup looks great, goodly to lascelles and Aarons – unlucky Perez.

  • 11 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:07 PM

I think this is a very brave move by Mclaren and a welcome one 3 at the back means Aarons can track back but there will be still be adequate cover if he gets caught out

Good to see Lascalles get more game time as well

Width and crossing from both sides should work out well cant wait to watch the game now !!

Judging by that line-up there will be plenty of goals in this one. Hopefully we’re on the right end. Need to take Ighalo out of the game somehow.

  • 18 Hail Wor Ashley // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:12 PM

Interesting, Schteve, interesting. Was expecting The back four to line-up like that, but Aarons for Perez is quite the call, unless he goes for 3-5-2.

  • 19 Toon Tang // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:12 PM

Come on ya bindipping plums, one more ftw.

Need to keep these Delia smith looking motherchuffers within distance eh

  • 20 toonbrother // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:14 PM

if its a 3-5-1-1 we have hope of taking a point
if its a flat 4-4-2 this will not end well
not with colo at the back

  • 21 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:14 PM

I’m liking that bench, not so much quality, but alot of players that need to prove there worth.

  • 22 check the toastie // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:14 PM

hope Aarons is up to speed, was awful in his last appearance against Northampton, fingers crossed.

concerned about Lascelles but a canny team.

  • 23 JDdubai // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:15 PM

Not a fan of moving Mbemba or of the middle, his pace is crucial for us with Colo there.

Nice to see Aarons out there though, rest for Perez can’t hurt either.

  • 24 Hail Wor Ashley // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:15 PM

Hoping Liverpool win this. Hoping Swansea lose and Thunlun and Bournemouth draw, likewise Villa and West Brom. All that and a win for us would be the perfect weekend.

  • 25 ilovetoon8788 // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:16 PM

very interesting line up. its a huge call dropping Perez for Aarons. i really hope Aarons is good enough for this league. it’s a huge game for him.

  • 29 Toon Tang // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:19 PM

Good good. Pool win at 3-1 down woulda been a nice return in-play.

  • 30 ilovetoon8788 // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:20 PM

there is no way this is a 4-4-2. mclaren has gone with 3 at the back to nullify the power of Deeney and Ighalo. Janmaat and Aarons are wingbacks bombing forward.
    3-5-2 it is.

  • 31 cyprus // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:20 PM

Really seemed Norwich, our main rivals, had done it and moved away too much. 3-1 with a terrible Liverpool. Then, they threw it away. They’ll remember this as the game that took them down.

BTW, Liverpool still very poor. 7 shots on goal, 7 goals. I think this has never happened.

  • 32 Nufc-83 // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:21 PM

Let’s if Aaron’s proves all his critics like wwsbrd wrong again and proves to be one of the best on the pitch again!!

  • 33 martoon // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:22 PM

Unlucky on Perez to be dropped but a brave selection from McClaren. Only worry is Lawro has predicted a 2 – 0 win for us 😉

  • 34 LGFUAD21 // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:22 PM

Good line up IMO given the circumstances.

I still think people put too much on young Aarons. But he’s easily our best winger.

Hope he can stay fit and push on with his development. Would love to see him loaned out next season (provided we hold on to him)

  • 35 cyprus // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:23 PM

    Let’s hope he makes 90′

    Worrying with lawro’s prediction like.

Agree. Harsh on perez but makes sense. I’m sure he’ll understand the selection. And I’m sure he’ll get a chance in the game.

  • 38 Thump // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:25 PM

Think I’d sooner see Aarons at LB and Mbemba in the middle, but this can work. A lot going forward, so hopefully we’re just hoping to keep the ball in the final third.

  • 39 santoon // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:25 PM

i reckon Lascalles should go lb so that he sits back and lets aarons do his thing without worry too much, shouldnt break up colo and mbemba partnership that been really good for the last couple of games

  • 40 Hail Wor Ashley // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:25 PM

Would be huge for our teams morale and mentality if we could win today and all the aforementioned results go as I said. These next 3 games are crucial to our season. Need to pick up 6/7 points.

  • 43 Hail Wor Ashley // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:28 PM

Personally think Mbemba at LB would be best. Take him out the firing line of the crucial CB role for a game, he’s had 3 howlers in the last 2 games, pretty much responsible solely for our last 3 goals conceded.

Looking forward to seeing Shelvey again and Saivet from the start and a weeks training under his belt.

  • 44 catchy in norway // Jan 23, 2016 at 2:29 PM

Hail wor ashley I think you are going over the top on Mbemba he has been a great signing and yes made some mistakes but apart from them been outstanding (ok his mistakes are howlers and costly buf overall a good signing)

  • 125 Tsunki // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:32 PM

Young uns displaying concentration commensurate with first team experience unfortunately. We seem to be falling into one of those games where every loose ball falls to an opponent. Mitrovic is too cocky for his ability, needs to work harder.

  • 126 daztoon // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:32 PM

  • 128 LGFUAD21 // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:32 PM

There’s is a vast difference between parking the bus and having to defend deep.

This isn’t our game plan. Watford are forcing us back.

You can’t just say to your team play up the pitch and then they do it. You need to earn the right to play high up the pitch.

  • 129 Harley // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:34 PM

Shelvey can’t get in to the game.

  • 130 LGFUAD21 // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:34 PM

    Midfield needs some composure.

Every time our defenders get the ball away Shelvey, Saivet, Gini and moussa are giving it away again. Just need to concentrate on keeping it first before trying to work an attack.

I think that’s what tiote brought to the team and we’ll miss it if Saivet doesn’t adapt to the tempo of the league fast.

  • 162 Hail Wor Ashley // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:49 PM

    Perez on for Aarons please.

Aarons does need to be loaned out to build fitness and confidence

  • 163 JamesToon // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:49 PM

Not about whether Mitro was too slow there on the break, fact is Wijnaldum and Sissoko should have been supporting him.

    – poor first half overall, not enough movement or urgency. Not enough pressing, defending has been ok, but we’ve been outnumbered in the middle to easy, Shelvey and Wijnaldum can’t really get into the game enough

  • 164 zimtoon // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:49 PM

mitrovic looks lost today and im surprised why mac always throws in thauvan wen we are already deep in trouble would love to judge him playing when we havent given up as a team

  • 165 ilovetoon8788 // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:49 PM

Agree that mitrovic has alot to learn and cannot be dependent upon to get us goals. A quality striker is obviously required urgently. We’ll be in big trouble if we are depending on mitrovic.

  • 166 JamesToon // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:50 PM

I’d go back to the 4-2-3-1 with Mbemba left back and put Perez on for Aarons

  • 171 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:51 PM

We have looked solid at the back but going forward have struggled big time Wijnaldum looks totally lost about where to play

Perez could be brought on for someone he presses well and will run the channels which is what we need probably Mitrovic who is not getting that much change

  • 172 daztoon // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:51 PM

Colo sweeping up well at the back with Watford looking to expose Aarons on the left.

    |Wini needs to play closer to Mitro

  • 173 Harley // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:51 PM

Aaron’s getting a lot of stick on here but is sticking to his job without looking spectacular. He’ll need a lot more games before we see the best if him.

Saivet slowly getting to grips with the pace after a shaky first 30 mins.

Mitrovic needs to work on getting on to scoring positions. Some good balls been played in with no one there.

  • 174 almondrichie // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:51 PM

mitro has no clue in front of the goal..and can’t he dribble past a single defender..he is already pissing me off….sub aarons for perez at half time and mitro for rivere after 55mins…..

definately need a pacy striker and towsend

  • 175 mainemagpie // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:51 PM

How is Mitrovic still on the pitch as a footballer he is worse than Cisse, but at least Cisse can run and get himself in the right position.

  • 176 Hail Wor Ashley // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:51 PM

    Jib

That wouldn’t be a bad call.
Least Perez presses consistently and helps win it back further up the pitch, is better in the box and is more likely to take a chance. We’ve only used Mitro to hold it up on a couple of occasions and he looks disinterested and agitated at times, for no apparent reason.

  • 177 Toon Tang // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:52 PM

  • 180 the broons // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:52 PM

Mitrovic always on his heels in the box, Aarons doesn’t look interested and Saivet is meant to be a ball winning midfielder and hasn’t won a tackle yet. Coloccini and Mbemba yet again our best players.

  • 181 cyprus // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:52 PM

Shelvey Wini must up their game. Aarons benched for Thauvin. Wini must be brought back a bit. Perez for someone.

mitro played really well, but knackered at the end there

WOW, what a formation, mitro is lost up front alone

  • 187 LGFUAD21 // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:54 PM

Not a pretty watch but not quite as horrific as is being made out.

Watford are giving us a very good game and making it very difficult with their pressing

Saivet has been mixed. Has the most tackles on the pitch and fouls. Can’t seem to cope with the temp. But none of the midfield can.

Only positive after the first 10 is that the defence seem to be coping with most of what is thrown their way. We’re gonna need the midfield to do something to stop us getting pinned back.

Mitro is isolated but needs to stop the strops. Looks like he’s gonna pull a Joey Barton every time he loosed the ball.

We should’ve signed deeney when we were linked last season.

Aarons is anonymous but I don’t think perez would cope much better with the game being this hectic.

Shelvey and Gini can’t get into the game. It’s a shame because between our 3 midfielders we should have enough to deal with 1 or two getting marked out of the game.

I dont really know what we can do to change things without tiote or Colback available.

Maybe stop trying to use mitro to bring the other players in and just focus on getting the ball up the pitch quickly without hoofing it.

  • 188 almondrichie // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:54 PM

    change the formation to 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2….they are totally dominationg our 3 man midfield….its actually 2 man…wijnaldum doesn’t defend….

  • 189 Jan Stavik // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:54 PM

Not a good 1st half, Watford are the better side and Mitrovic is too isolated up front.

Fingers crossed for a better 2nd half, I’ve got a feeling that if we concede first we’ll loose – so let’s hope for an early goal from Wijnaldum!

  • 190 toonking // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:54 PM

soccer saturday have just said watford are second worse for home goals only villa have scored fewer and we’re said to be the worse for away goals with just 5 so you could say a boring 0-0 draw at half time makes sense.

  • 191 Hail Wor Ashley // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:54 PM

Oh yeah, Riviere too. He holds it up just as well and has a bit of pace to boot.

  • 195 Blofal // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:56 PM

Three at the back is stifling us going forward.

We can only get forward down the wings and they are double-teaming our wingbacks making it very hard.

Wijnaldum is dropping back into the midfield to help out but Watfrod are shutting down any outlet for Shelvey to make those cutting forward passes he did last week.

We might have to go back to 4-2-3-1 and Aarons at LB. But Igahlo and Deeney will skin Aarons if he ends up isolated so it’s risky.

Despite the silly error that nearly cost us. I’ve been impressed by lascelles. He’s looked nervy and slow whenever I’ve seen him before.

I think all 3 cbs have been great.

Formation is a double edge sword. It’s neutered our attack but it’s also probably the reason it’s still 0-0.

With Watford playing high pressure I think we’d have been flooded at the back and conceded.

  • 207 LGFUAD21 // Jan 23, 2016 at 3:59 PM

For this formation to work we need janmaat to play more advanced to allow moussa to stay central to allow Gini to stay advanced.

Moussa and janmaat are both locked to the wing (probably out of habit) while Saivet is trying to sit in front of the back 4 meaning Shelvey hasn’t really got anything on.

Don’t know why he changed the system after the recent signs of the players getting to grips with it.

Should have just gone with Mbemba at LB and Lascelles at CB like the sensible on here suggested.

  • 257 toonbrother // Jan 23, 2016 at 4:12 PM

the problem with some “fans” on this blog:
    1. they are more preoccupied with toonbrother than they are with NUFC
    2. they are too thick to understand the game

only a lunatic would call colo’s performance today oustanding

those saying colo has been outstanding to wind up toonbrother are shooting themselves in the foot.

Lionizing on a player who is quite easily the WORST NUFC DEFENDER in modern history annd the worst player on the pitch today only means said player will continue to wreak havoc on the team

Every time we put in a performance it is the same … talk of us turning the corner. Then we go and put in an abject performance the following week and we are right back to where we started. Our problem is not our quality – our performances against top of the table teams are always the best – but that we have no strategy/ideas /motivation against mid-/lower-table teams. We aren’t where we are because of games against Arsenal, Tottenham, Man U etc. but because we consistently fail against the likes of Everton, West Brom, Watford etc.

Mitrovic is important to this team.
His finish wasn’t even bad in the first half, he sent the keeper the wrong way, but he made a good save with his toe.

The formation didn’t work today & it should not have been changed from the last game, Mclaren’s fault.

The people who make me laugh are the people who want Aarons to play.
    He’s not good.

  • 447 JamesToon // Jan 23, 2016 at 4:59 PM

Before the game i was pleased with the lineup as I thought we were sticking with the 4-2-3-1 system, at least that’s how the club showed it on their Twitter account, but to change to 3 at the back was an appalling decision and it killed us. Shelvey/Wijnaldum weren’t able to get in the game, there was a lack of movement intensity and urgency.

And is it me or has Mbemba been awful in the last 3 games, I’d play Lascelles at CB next week and shift Mbemba or Aarons to LB

The writing is on the wall after that terrible display by Newcastle. We really have some thick players at this club. We keep making the wrong decisions time and time again. When we need the ball more than ever we keep lumping it long in hope and gifting them possesion.

And £25 M for Sissoko!?? Are you fking kidding me!? The guys a joke can’t pass a simple accurate ball 3 yards away. 26m he’s not even worth 10m!!

Aaorns was shockingly bad today offered nothing at all and a huge dissapoint, ent as I expected good things.

As for Shelvey my oh my what a terrible game by him! Not even one pass went where he wanted it to. Looked like he was hungover.

Terrible performance and even worse result. Tbf it should have been 1-1 if it weren’t for that offside goal but thats football and it keeps going against us so that was to be expected. But our play has been horrible. Only one good bit of play that Mitro shot after a good move was the only highlight of the game that and Lascelles goal which was surprising.

The rest was woeful and we look doomed.

Seriously all the players were bad today and the only reason for that is McClaren. He got tactics all wrong.

Aarons is not a wingback; he’s a young winger who hasn’t played single PL match in ages. Saivet comes from a completely different league and Shelvey was no more lost than Gini or any other player.

I’m so tired of all the excuses from McClaren. With McClaren we are going down.

We have played 23 matches now and we have 5 wins. 5 Wins????? That is relegation form, especially this season when its more even than ever.

  • 476 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 23, 2016 at 5:11 PM

437 & 446 Agree we should not have changed the system but left with no other alternative as no recognised LB to replace Dummett because we have no cover in defence. But seemingly Mc & board does not feel defence needs strengthening.
448 Yes we may well get built up again at home against west Brom but knocked down again week after at Chelsea.
Unless we get quality LB, CF & CB in window we are doomed. Deafo! Don’t get blinkered by moves for Townsend unless you feel he can secure a place at LB,CB or CF .All he issuing to do is take Saylor’s place on the treatment table for a few weeks until Saylor wants it back. • 488 carl // Jan 23, 2016 at 5:20 PM

Their first goal was offside. We have to get goals into the side because we were very poor. Austin at £4 m and £100,000 was just what we needed. He’s a proven goalscorer at this level. Defensively we need additional full back cover.

Its as if he dithers to the point of the game being over and with mins to go is forced into a change to save face, all a sub with 2mins to go will do is slow the game down, its what you do when your haning on to a victory.

The guys got to go,simple as.
He might be a good coach but a manager is

Daztoon so 5 at the back? I think we ‘d be better employing a first class joiner to board up our goals. Cheaper & much more effective

Injuries are bleeding this team to death. There must be a real underlying problem with why we have so many & many are real long term. With 11 & 12 out of his squad each week he has a real selection problem. He has to rely on the same 12/13 week in week out with no cover for further injuries / suspensions. No he is not the best manager we have ever had but who is going to come at this perilous stage in the proceedings. No stick by him, get behind the team & hope MA will provide the cash or loan deals to strengthen the three positions we all know need strengthening. They have only 9 days left to fix it!
