Newcastle Star Could Stay On Tyneside

7:09 pm, Sunday, January 24th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 138 Comments

It looks like Florian Thauvin doesn´t think he´s cut out for Newcastle and the Frenchman has tried to call time on his career on Tyneside after just five months, but we understand that Steve McClaren wants the talented youngster to stay.

It wouldn´t be surprising if Florian is homesick and a bunch of other things, because we´re sure he didn´t expect to be playing for a side struggling with relegation when he signed for us for £13M in August.

florian thauvin northampton

Florian Thauvin – finding it hard to settle at Newcastle

Graham Carr had been wanting to get him for a while and it´s just a pity in retrospect that we didn´t spend that money on a striker – like Charlie Austin as one example.

It looks like Newcastle will not let the 22 year-old leave unless we get another winger in this month – and it may be difficult to get Andros Townsend from Tottenham, unless Chairman Daniel Levy lowers his asking price of £14M.

But with Newcastle 3 points from safety and Swansea winning their second game in succession at Everton by a score of 2-1 this afternoon, then Newcastle must bring in reinforcements this month or risk becoming a Championship club again in May.

We would expect if we do get a winger through the door this month then Florian will be allowed to leave, but what happens after his six month loan spell at Marseille is anybody´s guess.

If we manage to survive relegation then we may see him return in the summer and the assumption would be we can build a team that for once will not be fighting against relegation.

But on the other hand if we are relegated, Florian will not come back and our best players like Wijnaldum, Sissoko, Janmaat and others will have to be sold.

And with teams around us starting to win games, it may be some time before we pull out of the bottom four, since we are now five points off 5th bottom AFC Bournemouth.

Things are not looking too good for Newcastle right now and what we need are wins to get us out of trouble – and a number of them too.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I think things haven’t looked good at Newcastle for a long time Ed. In fact for about 8 1/2 years to be exact.

  • 2 JackButler // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:13 PM

13 million wasted on a player who was woeful for 18 months in the French league and that money was spent to replace the last dud Carr brought over from France in Cabella.

For a club that doesn’t allow a lot of money to be spent we sure do waste the majority of it.

  • 3 Jail for Ashley // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:20 PM

See Check the toastie putting the blame on old man Carr for Saviet already. Surely Mclaren and Moncur have to share the blame, they’re the footballing people on “the board”.
Swapping an untested French winger/CM for a vastly experienced PL DM in the middle of a relegation battle is absolute fcukin madness. Had Tiote not been in China he could have came in for Colback which at least would have help shore up that injury ravaged defence.

Fancy swapping townsend for Thauvin, think spurs could use him?

  • 5 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:21 PM

At least £70M got wasted on McC in less than half a year!

    …that hasn’t happened in 8½ year 😉

  • 6 nearly // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:22 PM

belfast im not sure what to make of it ,i think they will go for townsend and try and get thauvin out on loan or do they take a hit on him now or the summer either way we are going to loose money on him

i dont understand what you mean, my stance is the same is the same but different?
my stance is the same regardless, and if you cannot grasp it, then thats your problem not mine.
but i will try one last time.

its all about the football, the football and the philosophy. under P45 we had no system style philosophy, it was more about individual bits of skill, things he did not and cannot teach, he defends a nil-nil because he has a point, but he never tries to actually go out and win a game, home or away it was the same, poor football but with amazing goals when we scored. he also sapped the life out of the players, turning them into robots that had no minds of there own

now then there is Shteve, who is installing a sense of lets get the ball down and play it, we pass and move, we create chances from open play but just dont finish them off, for me the football is good to watch, regardless of who is playing, he gives the players a freedom to try and express themselves but also within a team structure, people slated HBA for being greedy, yet nearly every one of our goals scored were individual efforts under p45, Shteve has it the other way, some great team goals, but as OP pointed out, im baffled by his Subs and when they take place, the formation yesterday did not suit the players we have and thats why we lost the game, he should have played Chancle at LB and kept the rest of the team as they normally play, rolando had to much to do and was lost, but i do see him as our LW player..

my praise for Shteve is purely based on what i have seen this season, good football, and yes there have been some poor games too, but i would say more than half of them have been of a very good std where we have been unlucky not to win, we batted Sunderland, the ref spoiled it, as did he spoiled it vs man u,

P45 was never unlucky, because he never went for the win, he shut up shop way to soon.

Aye Jesper the guts of 30 million wasted on two players when the manager wanted premier league experience.

I would rather blame those who signed the players myself.

You’re speaking monkey again, Stop it. 🙂

I used to defend you a lot in the early days of Pardews tenure (before his employment become a vendetta for you) but you’re talking absolute crap right now

I was saying only a few weeks ago I’m trying to reserve harsh judgement on macca save for his inane substitutions and his putting square pegs in round holes (the latter AP was constantly doing as well) but after that watford cock-up, the continuance of bizarre formations and even more mindbogglingly ineffective use of his substitutions, no more. For someone– like yourself– who had such scathing and unrelenting critique of AP, it only makes me wonder as to either A) your inability to concede that past declarations of maccas ccompetency/abilities were wrong or B) you really have no idea what you’re talking about. I’d say I’m leaning towards the latter, but you’ve posted on here since near day one of this blog like me, and I’ve got a strong hunch it’s just your pride. Maccas s*** and so is our football club/team/whatever

    RE the article

Screw this kid. I had somewhat of a soft spot for remy because he at least tried. Just wasn’t good enough. Not playing to his strengths with a crap manager and being played out of position didn’t help, but this kid just seems like a total tw*t if I’m honest. Half a season and he wants to give up? Son, you’re getting paid at least 40k a week. Please F off back to France and do one

  • 17 Ian Toon // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:42 PM

I saw Saviet’s pass %. Personally I thought he tried to switch play which seemed a good idea on what looked like a pudding of a pitch. Let’s give him time to settle which is why I favour signing experienced PL players. Shelvey looked lost at times playing too deep as was Coloccini for their first goal. Berahino plays on the shoulder of the last defender which should suit Mitrovic.

  • 18 Jail for Ashley // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:42 PM

I love your pursuit of pure entertaining football and I bet most managers would like to play it but they also have to get results as well. Mclaren knows we love attacking footballing up here and he’s trying to deliver it but he’s not very good at it, he needs to find a balance of playing decent football and getting results and personally I don’t think he’s up to it.

  • 19 Jail for Ashley // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:46 PM

That is what I think it is as well, he was so pro Mclaren it is too hard for him to hold his hands up and say apart from a bit brighter football our latest sacked lower league manager is no better than the last one, therefore will continue to defend him.

Maybe simply because you misunderstand a bloggers post and felt you should adopt Tuff’s bully boy tactics. If you respect people they will respect you. Nothing about liking them.
Do you remember when we first engaged on here. I used to explain idiom’s to you pretty much on a daily basis. It came about because someone had said they felt over the moon. It doesn’t appear as though Thauvin will be sold outright either way, so what benefit would we gain by loaning him out?

I personally think he hasn’t been given a fair chance in this team, and I regard him as better than gouffran, who got on the pitch yesterday.

I say keep him, unless someone is willing to pay for him

Colback has premier league expirience, he’s still shite!

    We need quality!

If our 5 signings were of the same pedigree as Gini no one would be talking of premier league expirience or where they’re from.

Ashley has let the club slide for 8years, it doesn’t matter how much you spend it’s what you spend the money on. We’ve bought shite for years 1 or 2 pieces of quality last year was never going to sort the squad.

I don’t care where they come from as long as they’re quality, a duffer is a duffer no matter where they’ve played.

    Rooney or Messi? 😉

the benefit of loaning him out would be
the other club pays his wages
chance to build his confidence back up the abuse at watford has destroyed him

  • 35 toonking // Jan 24, 2016 at 8:10 PM

macca has proven to give more entertaining and attacking football than pardew might have done but to most owners it’s no good when the results don’t come with it thankfully he’s got cashley who’s proven already that relegation battles can still keep him in his job.

We know clearly that our team lacks the goal scorers in the team to score those goals therefore we’re giving the opposition an increasing large number of easier chances to score on the break.

The way pardew himself was treated tells mac he can have a bad run of results and remain in a relegation battle for a full season without having to worry about the sack The main worry is fans who’ve shown from pardew’s time that the occassional good run doesn’t make up for a consistently poor style of play, so he’s giving us this more attacking game making fans less fussed about poor results and can remain confident of still being manager as long as he doesn’t see us go down.

The abuse at watford killed him? Boo-f***in-hoo. I’d let all of Newcastle and more berate me for 40+k a week. Give me a break

  • 40 Ketsbaia9 // Jan 24, 2016 at 8:17 PM

Gouffran is a centre forward and not a defensive midfielder. It’s stupid him playing there. We’ll probably stick Tim Krul up front for the last game.

  • 41 toonking // Jan 24, 2016 at 8:18 PM

the trouble is it’s one word which won’t even have the squiggly line underneath when mis-spelt.

As a common poker player myself this mis spelling can be even more common because both loose and lose are very commonly used.

  • 42 tequilamag // Jan 24, 2016 at 8:19 PM

not sure about little jespers idioms but his use of In Plenum is just odd.

  • 43 mattyNUFC // Jan 24, 2016 at 8:19 PM

You know what else is stupid? Every damn thing you say. The insinuation that you’d play him at all, be it in or out of position just shows how daft you are

  • 44 NoahJ // Jan 24, 2016 at 8:21 PM

Thauvin’s abuse is warranted, but loaning him out is hardly going to allow him to win his place back in the team. It will depreciate his value, and we will more than likely still be paying some of his wages whilst playing for another club. I felt the same (though to a lesser degree about Cabella, but to a greater degree about m’biwa)

It just baffles me how we can spend so much on a player then not even give them decent playing time before making such a huge judgement call. Remember ferrerya- £4m loan fee for 0 minutes. how was that even allowed to happen?

  • 45 Jib // Jan 24, 2016 at 8:21 PM

Since leaving the Toon 3 years ago next Sunday Xisco has played 90 games scoring 30 goals 2/3rds of them for 2nd Division Córdoba.

So much for Kets footy knowledge

  • 46 mattyNUFC // Jan 24, 2016 at 8:23 PM

How much do people think shelvey’s non-existence yesterday was more due to our ridiculous formation or more so the fact that Colback was out? Definitely think an amalgam of both. Think it showed numerous times in the first half (when we were at times action as though we were playing an opponent) that Saivet and Shelvey were far from on the same wavelength

I must admit that saivet doesn’t fill me with confidence either after watching a cameo against West ham then a game against watford. He seems weak and we’ll off the pace. I hope he comes good but we really are wasting money on these French lads, Ashley being water tight must be furious. Carr, Charnley and Steve ( they’re all on the board) must take responsibility for this seasons flops with carr and Charnley responsible for previous seasons. Too much is expected of perez and mitrovic (remember perez was for the development squad) who are both young talents but are at risk of being ruined.

  • 75 NoahJ // Jan 24, 2016 at 8:56 PM

    Nearly @63

Of course a loan spell can both increase or decrease a player’s value. But, I’m afraid I hold no hope that Thauvin can perform so well that he increases the £12m value we paid for him (though I doubt it’s still even at £12m now).

I anticipate that if a loan agreement was set up, it would have a trigger clause for an outright purchase (like cabella and m’biwa) and for a fixed fee (which will be less than what we paid for him). So, he either performs well and we lose him for that fixed lower fee, or he does poorly and his value depreciates.

In terms of paying some of his wages, I’d rather pay more for something rather than some for nothing. He’s our player, and he has some quality, so he might as well be here (if it’s between him or noone). The same goes for tiote.

  • 76 Jib // Jan 24, 2016 at 8:56 PM

I think this will be the pattern for the rest of the season.

We’ll have everyone back for our next home game and every home game after.

Any suggestion of niggles or knocks and the player concerned will not travel.

It’s maximum points at home and honourable draws on the road.

    I accuse McLaren of nothing.

I surmised from his selection that he was being pragmatic.

We have 7 home matches and 8 away matches left , with the home advantage this team seems to need it seems the right thing to do to target the home games.

There were several excuses SM could have used and chose not to , said in their report that the pitch which was re-laid on Tuesday looked as if it was made up of carpet remnants , McClaren never mentioned it .

I think he has his strategy , and I’m sure he wishes he didn’t have to give a post match interview more than the fans do.

  • 82 Jack Root // Jan 24, 2016 at 9:15 PM

You should post more often. Brilliantly and side splittingly funny. I will keep the minutes of the meeting. Do we have a quorum?

  • 83 Shot Bru // Jan 24, 2016 at 9:21 PM

With 15 games to go, sitting in the bottom 3, 70 million spent, 4 fit defenders do people think Cashley will have faith in Wally till the end of the season?

  • 84 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 24, 2016 at 9:21 PM

Tequila…it seems you didn’t understand the use of the phrase “in plenum” to begin with. I have tried to explain it to you, but that just ended up in static…

…you are a bit like a child in so many ways; an answer just leads to another question. And that’s me phrasing it polite to you.

  • 85 angelswithdirtyfaces // Jan 24, 2016 at 9:23 PM

    Aha wild conjecture then 🙂

When you are in 18th place and 3pts might get you above the drop zone, how is it pragmatic to play for 1pt ?

If the pitch is naff then it is so for both sides. I doubt whether the home side will have practised hard on their new pitch to gain a dubious advantage. Colo gets turned on every pitch anyway.

  • 86 tequilamag // Jan 24, 2016 at 9:29 PM

Jesp I understand the definition. That is not my point, as you know, It`s your usage of the term when describing the blog that has me puzzled.
Of course you could just be a pompous windbag in which case it makes perfect sense.
Yeah I think I will go with that.

  • 90 tequilamag // Jan 24, 2016 at 9:35 PM

I see so not everyone. Just those who have nowt better to do on a Sunday. Jesp indeed you should savour the moment. Victory is sweet.
Can we have the refreshments now?

  • 91 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 24, 2016 at 9:37 PM

This one is a good one. A guy walks in to a pharmacy with a sore eye and the the pharmacist says out loud in plenum for everyone there to hear, that he has an eye infection 😉

…that was the sound of the wind being taken out of my sails for tonight!

Jack…are you up to your dirty tricks again.

  • 92 Jack Root // Jan 24, 2016 at 9:40 PM

I even broke off from War and Peace. Class act even without the refreshments.

  • 93 Jib // Jan 24, 2016 at 9:41 PM

I’ve had this debate with Jesper before .

We know the pitch is the same for everyone but a bad pitch is a leveller.

Their last home game was the cup against us on 9th January yet they wait until the last moment under FA rules to re-lay it – gimme a break.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t blame them , good on them , the money that’s sloshing around footy these days you have to try and get every advantage you can.

  • 103 angelswithdirtyfaces // Jan 24, 2016 at 10:12 PM

I take the point entirely that a passing side will suffer more than a long ball team with a naff pitch – but they had already beaten us twice, and if anything had more to lose, given their recent record.

I’m not a great believer in conspiracy theories. I’m sure at most other clubs, as well as at SJP, the cock-up theory is usually a better fit.
I do not believe we were beaten by the pitch either – there are a lot of excuses being trotted out for us being a relegation side and we must be running out of them by now.
I too thought their first goal was offside initially, but not on replay. Ighalo just knows how to spring that trap. He is having a great spell. We were beaten by the better team on the day, and out thought too.
We still have the dual dilemma of an abysmal defence and an attack that is misfiring, though I am sure Mitro will come good, we do not have the luxury of an extended bedding in period. Watford has 16 new players after their clear-out (17 with Pantilimon) and they are playing well as a unit, and certainly better than we are. Better management and coaching maybe ?

£70m was not wasted on McClaren. Were the players that came in this summer his buys? No they weren’t.

Have his wishes been even acknowledged in the form of a proven striker and CB? Shelvey looks like ti token sop to him.

Any money wasted’s down to Charnley and his loyal ally, Carr who’ll do their best to place the responsibility for yet another relegation looking season onto McClaren’s shoulders. McClaren’s been nothing more than a fall guy for their bad leadership.

  • 109 lesh // Jan 24, 2016 at 10:24 PM

tequila – plenty of folk on here that I do not agree with that I am not obseessed with and do not comment on their posts.
It is always interesting those folk of the pro Percy Brigade that I disagreed with several years ago, when I first came on the blog – naturally band together – to join the melee – against anyone who dared speak out – bit like you – first person to have a pop at me on this blog – and you still naturally return to your default position, along with those other scallies, to have a pop as someone who dared to challenge you.

Don’t hear you bigging up the King recently.
I can now add you to the blog list of hissy fitters and spiteys — jib/welsh/Jack Rot/Ian Toon/Tequilaeagle.

Why are you so obsessed with cleansing the blog of anyone who disagrees with you?

  • 116 Toon Tang // Jan 24, 2016 at 10:49 PM

Would probably have to be an emergency of biblical proportions to play him as cf I reckon. Would slot in nice as dm or cb though. Get him on the morse code and take it from there eh

Old TUFF is very very close to his uncle.

If Thauvin is to go out on loan it’s pointless sending him back to France? He’s struggling with the physical part of English football, So a move to the championship would benefit him more, Send him there and see what he comes back like.

I see Colo has come out and said “we” need to be harder in the tackle, win more 50/50 balls or words to that effect. Jesus H. Christ. Colo is one of the meekest tackling defenders I’ve ever seen. When he’s playing well his timing is good and he does the job, but he’s about as hard as a pound of wet leather. Someone should show him some footage of John McNamee or even Titus bloody Bramble because he wouldn’t even know how to get properly stuck in – he’s never tried.

  • 133 Santon03 // Jan 25, 2016 at 2:57 AM

The 1st goal was offside, we were a bit unlucky.
We definitely need a finisher, we create chances just lack of finishing touches.
For instant hit, we should get Huntelaar, his record is incredible, forget about his age. Or we can get Caroll back, he will definitely do much better, a player coming home will do better than before just like Shearer and Beardsley.

  • 134 Mister Tuff // Jan 25, 2016 at 3:21 AM

Jesper – fear not -our resident scallywags are a bit like Wally – all full of bluster. They were out in force tonight emboldened by one another – not so strange that they all were King Percys’ “men”.
Whilst decent Toon fans have to endure their wailing and bitching we should also consider that the blog does perform a public service in that it keeps these fellows off the streets where I would imagine they engage in the following activities.
    1. Wacking old ladies with their coshes and blackjacks in order to steal their pensions.
    2. Scurrying around back gardens finding windows to peep through furthering their “peeping Tom” activities.
    3. Sneaking through back gardens and stealing ladies underwear left out on washing lines. These folk are known as gusset sniffers.

So I’m afraid we’ll have to put up with them for the time being.

  • 138 Jail for Ashley // Jan 25, 2016 at 6:58 AM

Mclaren can’t be excused on the basis of being let down by Carr and Charnley as he’s on the board along with Moncur. If the real board only consists of Carr, Charnley and Ashley (who isn’t really on the board) then it’s Mclarens own fault for willingly signing up to such a system. Interesting that there’s four of them on the board, what happens when it’s a split vote, who makes the final decision, it doesn’t go to public vote does it. If selling or keeping Tiote was a split decision, Carr would obviously vote to sell for his finders commission, Charnley to sell because he knows that’s what will keep Mikey happy and his figures. The two football men say his PL experience is vital in a relegation battle. Mikey gets a phone call.
