Why Do Newcastle Not Sign These Players?

2:21 pm, Sunday, January 24th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 264 Comments

Newcastle currently have a very poor defense and we have the third worst defensive record in the Premier League with only Norwich and Sunderland conceding more than the 41 goals we have conceded in our 23 games.

Last season we conceded 63 goals, the second worst only to relegated QPR,  so you cannot accuse us of having a good defense – but we don’t see much effort being made this month to bring in some new defenders.

joel matip

Joel Matip – available as free agent this summer

And yesterday we had only four fit defenders available and had to alter the formation of the team because of that.

So even though injuries are again starting to decimate the squad like it did last season at this time, there seems no urgency by those at the top to bring in any new defenders in January.

We have been linked for a while with Schalke’s top center-back Joel Matip, who becomes a free agent in the summer, and we were also linked with Lorient center-back Lamine Kone – and both would cost a low £5M this month.

However, it doesn’t look good for us getting Matip, as the Liverpool Echo is reporting today that Matip is  high on Jurgen Klopp’s transfer targets and they want to sign him when he becomes a free agent this summer.

They could even get him to sign a pre-contract agreement this month and then have him sign for them officially in the summer.

Why aren’t Newcastle actively after him, because he would be a very good value as a free agent?

Of course with us being 3rd bottom of the Premier League our negotiating stance has taken a big hit this season.

We will probably unload the likes of Mike Williamson to Wolves although on the positive side Steven Taylor is returning to fitness and was on the bench yesterday.

Just so that we have some back-up cover in case of injuries, we’d like to see Mike Williamson stay at Newcastle until the summer when his contract runs out and he will leave Newcastle.

We can unload other players like Sylvain Marveaux, Manu Riviere and Yoan Gouffran to open up places in the Premier League list of 25.

It’s just surprising that no effort is being made to bring in some defenders this month.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

We don’t sign the likes of Matip because of high wage demands. Apparently Southampton agreed to pay Austin £100000 PW. Our top “earner”is Colo £60000PW & also yes Marvaux £60000PW. He must be forcd off the payroll even if we allow him away on a free. WE paid £11 for Thauvin .Instead of giving him an easy out by loaning back out we should say button down & shows what we paid £11M for instead of thinking of spending another £10/11M on another sick note

Swansea may be just above us in the league, but there football and passing is far superior. We haven’t got the players to play there style of play, they’ll pass us off the pitch, so forget us picking up points against them.
We’re a bottom three club because we’re 18th worst team in the premier league. We would probably just escape relegation with a top proven striker.

  • 9 banjax // Jan 24, 2016 at 2:33 PM

players does not address fundamental problems. For me McLaren remains our no1 problem and Charnley no2. Mike Ashley’s seeming inability to hire a charismatic manager like Benitez, DeBoer and even Moyes, smacks of indecision and lack of ambition. With money to spend and with McLarens record it would be a no brainier for any other club, but our seeming ‘rabbit in the headlights’ mentality, I am now (wasn’t till now) convinced we will be relegated because clubs like Swansea are beginning to find their form and pull away from us. McLaren isn’t and never was the manager for NUFC and if you don’t believe me look at his Derby County Stats (and Charnley hired him on those) then look at our stats so is it any surprise we will be relegated !

Jamsha. I’m no fan of Ashley but what more does he have to do to satisfy you? He has already “invested” about £70M this season & it seems there is more money (Probably another £30M available) The players we seem to buy need time whilst players other teams get seem to hit the ground running. We made three excellent signings in Shelvey, Gini & Mbembe . Mad Mitro needs to ask Ashley if he will buy him a brand new pair of shooting boots. Trouble is with NUFC you either get out of this world football or never in this world football.

Ashley apologists persevere despite the object of their devotion continually throwing them under the unstoppable juggernaut. It can only be for the pleasure and satisfaction they derive from the recoiling and dismay they cultivate with their invariably nonsensical propaganda.

We have the out and out supporters who see the blame resting on scouts, directors, coaching staff. But not at the door of the man who owns and dictates the mode of the club, Mike Ashley who actually said in a video statement that his door is where it all stops. So anyone who says it’s Carrs fault, McLaren’s fault or the tea lady’s fault, please shut it and refer to your glorious leaders statement. He says it’s His fault, so believe him if you love him that much.

While agree we could do better than Macca, what do you really think we’re currently capable of? Who’s going to score our goals? We have NO proven striker, not one. Our defence is weak and has been for a long time. We lack options on the f.ing bench.
People talk like we had Real Madrid’s side with a dodgy manager. We are paying a price for an inept board failing to recognise our problems, or choosing the wrong options for the chance of making a few quid.

  • 22 mindshaft // Jan 24, 2016 at 2:50 PM

Liverpool apparently already have an agreement for Matip to John n them in the summer so no chance of us getting him
As much as I like Mitro he has to be dropped , he has no confidence and couldnt score if the opposition goalie went off for a loo break , maybe we can get Shola back … scored one of the goals of the day yesterday
kin Swansea winning as well, not a good weekend for toon

  • 26 Tsunki // Jan 24, 2016 at 3:00 PM

To excuse himself from his own “At my door” video testimony, Ashley invented the idea of being no part of the club by appointing a board of directors of which he was not one, thereby removing his door, Monsters, Inc. style, neatly from the equation. However it doesn’t stop him being the outright owner and dismantling his board, and trying out another one.

  • 31 spitfire_ // Jan 24, 2016 at 3:07 PM

    WWSBRD @ 19

Actually can be his fault, and it’s his fault. Since he hired Charnley for MD. Because Charnley run the club on daily basis. And what kind of guy is Charnley? A guy without any experience at this position. A guy who don’t have the contacts in the world of football. And the most important thing – a guy who doesn’t understand the football! He thought last January that 5 fit defenders was enough ffs… and that almost cost us. It was obvious for every single fan, that strengthen the defence is a must, after the last two seasons… just Charnley didn’t saw it. In the summer, he bought just Mbemba and offered a new contract to Colo, and as it looks by this date, this will cost us.

So yeah, ashley may distant himself out of Newcastle, but he also was the person who choose the new boss in Newcastle United. The guy who haunted tirelessly McClaren, after his first two rejects.

If we accept that Newcastle United Football Club is person who is sentenced to death, ashley isn’t the guy who pull the trigger. ashley is the judge, who pronounced the sentence, because the executioner just follow orders.

We bought Rivière, Cisse, Mitrovic, Perez and De Jong with Rivière in particular unable to score goals. But then you look at the list of players we bought on the cheap like Gouffran, Obertan, Marveaux who are simply not good enough. Then the issue of selling our better players like Cabaye, Debuchy and Then Carr’s wasteful purchases like Thauvin, Cabella, Yanga Mbiwa and Ben Arfa. I could also mention Davide Santon. In other words we have wasted a lot of money with bad judgment and bad players. So to sum up we have forwards who can’t score and the fault of that lies squarely with McLaren and his coaching staff.

With a couple of points won on the road we should make 40 points easily.
I see us as Leicester last season , a work in progress.

I note you’ve not offered an explanation for your repeated positive backing for the achievements of club, owner, manager and players this season. I was hoping for a bit more rationale tbh.

So, in the absence of any justification for your inveterate optimism, do you think we need any more signings this window to reach the ‘down to the wire’ heights of 40pts this season ?

Only yesterday you were saying this:
“In fact if we went a winning run that this squad is more than capable of achieving .. we could be pushing for Europe!” (sic)

I think its barely 50/50 us surviving, we can still definitely do it, though the arithmetic is marginal, but it looks less likely with every week that passes. Is that a reasonable viewpoint ?

Rotonda – ah do they realise? Ashley is successfully distancing himself from criticism these days, as the blog vitriol to Charnley and Carr shows.

Perhaps they don’t realise that although the Board comprises directors with executive control of the day to day running of the company, ‘ in it’s best interests’, it is accountable to the shareholders, and can be removed by them by Ordinary Resolution. Oh wait, how many shareholders do nufc have?

  • 67 mainemagpie // Jan 24, 2016 at 3:34 PM

From a purely statistically point of view using form over the last 15 matches played, starting from Newcastle’s win v Norwich, Newcastle actually have the highest points per game than any of the bottom 6 (including Swansea winning just now).

    Bournemouth 1.13
    Newcastle 1.2
    Swansea 1.0
    Sunderland 1.06
    Norwich 0.73
    Villa 0.6

Using McClaren’s claim that “if we keep playing like this we will stay up”, projecting the last 15 games, the bottom 6 after 38 games would look like this

    Bournemouth 42
    Newcastle 39
    Swansea 37
    Sunderland 35
    Norwich 34
    Villa 22

Ironically the same points for Newcastle as last season.

Alternatives would be Willems and Aly Cissokho at left back.

Berahino and Lacazette would be striking alternatives. I think we can win all our home games but I thin we’ll lose them all away. We need to start winning soon.

Ashley has been a problem in the past possibly but to lump it all on him now is wrong. No one can accuse him of not spending money this season but the four man committee now has to look at itself and ask some questions. Are the players being brought in good enough? I think the players are good but were they what we needed? If we are to buy again this week then please address the problem and yes I think goal scoring is now our biggest concern. Will Townsend give enough to supply Mitro with the ammunition from wide? Is he better than Thauvin and Aarons? If we get Berahinho is he ready and good enough to create goals from the current supply line? if not then can we not go all out and get Remy who is not everyone’s favorite person but we know he can do the job. Is our defence getting better and have we enough in reserve to see us through till the end of the season?
Ashley will spend for sure but are the four man committee up to the job? That’s the million dollar question?

  • 82 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 24, 2016 at 3:47 PM

Why do we want Matip or others when the club and most fans on here love Colo? Who is a new CB going to replace? Colo? Surely not?

Well old Blackley saw almost where the weaknesses lay. Colo. What was he doing again yesterday? What he does most games. Going AWOL. Ball watching. No bravery. No aggression. No leadership. No physicality. You can’t have that in a central position in front of your own sticks.

And we’ve got no killer instinct. How many bloggers told me Mitro and Perez would bring home the bacon? My first impression of Mitro was he’s slow and lumbering. Not a popilar thing to say at the time. What is the club playing at? If it wasn’t obvious at the start of the season as it was to me, it was surely obvious at the start of this window. Now we’re at the end of the window and we’ve got two midfielders.

I said immediately that Cabella and Thauvin aren’t right. I’ve seen half an hour of Saivet and that was enough to worry me. There’s a lot of sleep walking going on at the club and on this blog. Sort out the midfielder and the goals will come and we’ll start keeping them out, some were saying. Dear me.

    Newcastle -4

Why haven’t we signed or even tried to get a CB? Because Charnley’s assessment is that we’re well covered with Colo, Mbemba, Saylor (about ready to return before he’s injured again) and possibly Dummet. Willo? Well he’s surplus and’ll be sold thus window if he’s fit!

And, I suspect that Lee (Mr Ambition personified) Charnley’ll probably scared to think of anything other than thinking in terms of relegation and thus not commuting the Club to new players.

He and Ashley have had weeks to prepare for signings in key areas but no, they’ll be content to play out the charade of ambition by going through the motions of trying but failing to sign a striker and a winger.

For Nero and Rome read Ashley and Newcastle United.

In any event, Ashley thinks he’s nicely set things up so his hands are clean but he’s so dumb ge thinks fans’ll fall for it. He’s in for a shock, the shock that Charnley and Moncur, his men on the ground, should’ve prepared him for.

    Oh!
And goal difference means nothing without points.

But we are not riding high are we, and the reason we are not is because indirectly Mike Ashley is making the footballing decisions. To say he isn’t is ludicrous, he has hired a board who are fully compliant with his wishes, a more qualified and experienced board would want paying more for starters and would want their own input if their names were to be associated with what was happening on the pitch. He has a board consisting of at least three people who are desperate for a job in football and will seemingly go along with anything to keep it.

Get the best we possibly can and townsend is that in my opinion, he is an England international and if starts enough games will go to the euros. Berahino on the other hand isnt getting any stick and he is poor, but again I dont expect anyone better wanting to come here. When pardew was here people said they hated the football and tactics he used, and yet mclaren plays decent football but players are inconsitant yet people still complain. Ashley has spent money, yet the fans still getting at him. Dont get me wrong I dont forgive him for what he has done in the past but he has kept his word from last game of season. Base on the overall form against these teams we could go into these games with a bit of confidence or atleast us bloggers can and reading what we’re saying on the blog over the course of this season newbies might think we’re wanting these games throughout the season. If that form continues and palace’s form might be where the problems lie as they’re playing 3 of the teams around us and on current form look certain to away these teams 3 points so our continuous form we show against these bigger teams will end up out the window. If we don’t win well this could be the year pardew relegates newcastle.

Mike’s team. The board. A convincing lot. Given the remit of spending to an on target profit percentage, they have secured Mike’s confidence that they can buy and sell players in rotation without making an overall loss. However they probably also guaranteed Premier league stability in that model. I know Mike loves a flutter, but surely he can’t be too excited with the way his stooges are gambling with his investment? So how come he can’t get his finger out and act? • 142 carl // Jan 24, 2016 at 4:53 PM

    Tsunki,
Looking at the latest accounts and the net investment made in players to date, in two transfer windows, where has Ashley not kept his side of any so called deal? Looking at the playing performance and placement outcome we appear as a team to be underperforming . That is on the basis of wage and transfer fees That superficially suggests it’s the coach and players fault. However it has to be accepted that Mike Ashley has delegated responsibility for appointments. This leads me to believe that Charnley, Carr and to a lesser extent because of time in the job and lack of influence over signings McClaren.

Just where else in the premier league would you find an owner or Chairman held responsible by fans to the same extent as Ashley? Does he really extend the degree of influence and control as you suggest?
Isn’t it time to cut him some slack?
    Just asking.

    NEWCASTLE UNITED
Accounts for the year to 30 June 2014
Ownership Mike Ashley owns Newcastle United via his company, MASH Holdings Limited, registered in the UK.
    Turnover 7th highest, £130m (up from £96m in 2013)
    Gate and matchday £26m
    TV and broadcasting £78m
    Commercial activities £26m
Wage bill 7th highest, £78m (up from £62m in 2013)
Wages as proportion of turnover 60%
Profit before tax £19m (up from £10m in 2012)
    Net debt £95m
    Interest payable £0.19m

Highest-paid director Unnamed, £106,793 (Lee Charnley was the managing director)

There are two ways of looking at Newcastle’s financial picture. Mike Ashley would say it is incomparably healthier than the over-borrowed operation he took over in 2007; money was spent on wages, he has £129m loans interest-free which he did not reduce. Protesting fans see the £19m profit, £39m banked, and ubiquitous free Sports Direct advertising as evidence that Ashley sees the club as a cash cow.

Newcastle maintain this is unfair and have promised to invest this summer(2015) – as well as appoint a manager. The figures show the money is there.

  • 143 toon kk // Jan 24, 2016 at 4:57 PM

Mike probably thinks that there’s a lot of luck involved with football. There is. There’s no guarantees. He wants to make his own luck. He’s spent a fortune but there’s no guarantees in football. It’s an art as much as a science. So perhaps Mike continues to see in Charnley and Carr what he did in the first place? It’s not as if some of our fellow whizz pundits on the blog haven’t been sailing high on a chillum of optimism since September, is it?

There would be nothing wrong with it if it was realistic, there is no way mourinho would ruin his career coming to us. Mourinho doesnt play ‘good’ football anyway, which is what most fans cried out for when pardew was in charge.

I hope we do sign a cb, winger and striker. And everyones wishlist would be different but realastic targets would be a pretty slim choice. Surely at the mo anyone os worth a gamble anyway? Especially English? Not many will agree but I think English should be our main targets

Don’t ask Tsunki to look at the accounts. Especially not the commercial revenues of £26m. And don’t ask him to compare to other club’s figures. Because other clubs earn massive amounts on advertising, don’t you know. His blood pressure would rocket.

  • 152 Tsunki // Jan 24, 2016 at 5:06 PM

Carl/Ian – no. it’s not time to cut him some slack. There are many here who think they understand the figures and what they project onto their view of nufc as a club. But there remain baffling financial arrangements which can only be understood logically under the magnifying glass of Ashley and his relationship with Sports Direct.

The financial solidity of Nufc is not a benefit to the fans. We could support the team if it was in league one and financed by a scaffolding firm. It is an expedient measure to maintain the clubs commercial standing, stay in the PL, Rake in the Broadcasting payments, match day revenue and merchandising will remain commensurate. Factor in the cost/benfit to player investment versus league position ( for merit payments) and if you are in profit overall, as expected you would then calculate your projected spend budget on players to maintain that status quo.

The question really is, is it because Mike wants a successful club operating at the top level in it’s sport and thereby increasing revenue from all quarters from the ensuing brand exposure OR is it because Mike needs the club to demonstrate a sustainable model maximising profit for spend over the long term, while the club serves as a merchandising and advertising boon for the grander perspective of SD?

The performance of the board and the team versus the performance of Mike and SD off the back of it speaks for itself.

  • 153 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 24, 2016 at 5:07 PM

Mourinho might be interested in doing a 6 month salvage operation. If only we had real ambition.

We haven’t ONE proven striker, so who’s going to get our goals? Macca can’t change that. What about our defence? Looks weak to me.
If the board recognised those weaknesses and brought in the quality required we would be a mid table side.

how can i give p45 any credit for the season we finished 5th? I honestly believe he achieved it though luck more than good management or good tactics, he had no clue where to put players, the first half of that season was some of the luckiest wins i had seen from us, long punts up to Ba , band a goal , the lucky 6 game run where he had HBA Cabaye and cisse where on fire was more down to the fact that Oberan was injured and he was forced to play HBA and Cabaye played higher than normal,it soon changed though as he was like a guy at a casino riding his luck betting on black every time and it wins, he quit while he was ahead, and he basically quit any kind of football from then on.

my argument has never changed regarding P45, crap manager that claims credit for wins but hangs everyone out to dry when they lose.

as for the games v watford, we are a team in transition and i have seen some of the best football we have played since SBR’s second season, we just dont have a Shearer in our team, and so what that a workman like Watford beat us, Southampton did it all the time, Watford have 2 of the best forwards in the prem, we dont, but the good thing IMO is that we create lots of good chances, so when we do get a good CF we will be a very good team playing at the top end of the table,
Liverpool are 7th, only scored 5 more than us
Man U are 5th only scored 3 more than us.

we play miles better football than both of those 2 teams, we have made huge progress in only months on the football side of things,, P45 had 4 years to implement good football, and he failed just as he is failing at palace right now, they play some of the worst football ive seen this year, but dig out freak results against the run of play, but hey that happens,, i know which id rather watch, and i will settle for where we are because i do see progress on the pitch, i see where we are lacking and that can not be put at Shteves door.

and please before anyone says Shteve has got x amouts of talent, you dont need the best players to play good football, p45 was beaten 2 time by brighton who played of the pitch both times, its more about football philosophies.

On a slightly more footballing note though, it’s odd how events seem to keep aligning to their design of making sure we struggle like he’ll 🙂 other seemingly doomed dudes suddenly get a shot in the arm, we can take sparkling form into a disaster the very next match, and our calling card of hand season-saving wins to our fellow relegation danglers. Life’s not fair, is it? We sometimes get even fellow ‘supporters’ accusing us of being fickle, always a funny one that, considering we don’t even get the mercy of knowing, like Aston Villa of the unwashed, that we are definitely going. No. Not us. We get to agonise week in week out whether we are on the ladder or the snake. Yet that ground still folsom with expectant fans. Shame the hierarchy don’t appreciate that.

ok, let me define it another way, that season we defended amazing, but in front of goal we were 3 worst for scoring goals only wigan and QPR scored less and wigan got relegated, and funny enough we had the 3rd highest amount of goals outside the box, , that season it was wonder goals are us, and thats why fans were happy, not the amount of goals, it was the shear quality of the goals, individual bits of skill, something P45 did not teach them.

I’ve made a point of not listening to his interviews for a while as I was going a bit mad. Over the last half a dozen games I’d been quite happy with our set up and application in games.

Then yesterday he shot himself in the foot with his formation, we’re in a bad enough position without fixing something that isn’t broken. Someone pointed out a week ago he’s maybe ignoring certain players or not setting up in a certain way to try and provo the squad isn’t upto it.

Matip has already signeda pre contract on a free for Liverpool that’s why

  • 232 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 24, 2016 at 6:39 PM

Makro missed the opposition scoring because he’s too superstitious to come out for the start of the second half. He thought we were terrific yesterday after earning a valuable point.

  • 233 Jail for Ashley // Jan 24, 2016 at 6:39 PM

    toonking,
His contract will be so full of holes he’s not going anywhere. If he had any integrity he would have walked from Derby last year at the end rather than get his pay out after the way he went on. He must be absolutely minted due to all his former sackings.

  • 234 JamesToon // Jan 24, 2016 at 6:43 PM

Ian yeah but we shouldn’t change the system just cos of him being injured

  • 235 Toon Tang // Jan 24, 2016 at 6:43 PM

So the league that no one wants to win rolls on. A team like Leicester are never going to get such a perfect opportunity for a long time at least. They should grab it whilst it’s hot

  • 236 Ian Toon // Jan 24, 2016 at 6:44 PM

    Mr Tuff- The Blog Bully.
A growing number think you protest too much.

  • 237 Belfast // Jan 24, 2016 at 6:46 PM

Cooled out interest in Townsend after Chinise club cooled their interest in Tiote. Hmmmmmmmm…..

Saw your post on Macca being a better choice than you had anticipated. Or am I misquoting you yet again?

  • 242 toonking // Jan 24, 2016 at 6:54 PM

    JFA

I think you missing my point in a way. What i’m saying is even a relegation with palace will not stop this argueing and posting over pardew. If he were to remain at palace people will still continue talking because now they’ll start putting posts up about his championship form and if he were to get the sack you’ll see people raving on about him no longer being in a job or being manager of a lower league club and mentioning how bad they might be.

It’s hard to think how people will stop raving on about pardew because palace could get CL and you’d have munster and mag52raving on about him and you can see palace relegated and you’ll have RH and catchy continuing to rave on about how crap he’s been and what his future will be.

  • 243 JackButler // Jan 24, 2016 at 6:55 PM

I hope our interest in Townsend has died down as we need a striker before we look to add another over hyped English man. Townsend doesn’t score and its goals we need cause the lack of them is the thing that’s going to see us go down

  • 244 GeordieTwo // Jan 24, 2016 at 6:56 PM

Just saw the game. We showed some fight for part of it. Their first goal was clearly offside. Still, not enough from us. Shelvey’s passing was off and we don’t have that cutting edge up front. We can’t head the ball to save our lives. This looks ominous. Five wins from 23. Wake up Ashley.

  • 245 Ian Toon // Jan 24, 2016 at 6:58 PM

Townsend wouldn’t come cheaply. Probably command a higher wage than Tiote. We could always come to an arrangement to pay off a number of players’ contract early but at a discount. Would meet FFP requirements but cash flow is king with Ashley!

  • 246 JAMSHA // Jan 24, 2016 at 6:59 PM

dont understand why people blame Carr…his job is to scout an hand out the list of players….but its Lee who want players cheap an not stars

  • 247 Rotonda heights // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:01 PM

    Jib

I just can’t understand it myself. 3rd bottom you’d think we peasants would be dancing in the streets. And this isn’t a new phenomen either as we’ve been royally treated over the last 8 years.

  • 248 check the toastie // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:02 PM

has a lot to answer for Graham Carr like, has signed some crap on very long contracts.

Saivet stinks of the next one on his production line of mediocrity. French league can get gems but some rogue ones over the years have arrived for sure.

  • 249 Rotonda heights // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:03 PM

    jamsha

yeah cos the scouting guy at leicester has spent so much on Mahrez, vardy, Kante, Fuchs etc

  • 250 JackButler // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:03 PM

    Jamsha

Because so many of the players Carr has put in the list are simply no where near good enough – he may not make the final decision, as that is always based around the financial restraints imposed by Ashley, but he is the man that puts the players forward to be chosen.

  • 251 Jib // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:03 PM

    I’m watching Depor v Valencia.
That Aymen Abdennour , Central Defender , that Valencia pipped us for from Monaco in the Summer looks OK.

  • 252 Belfast // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:04 PM

Well if like me you where expecting Mick Harford or a Mark Robins or some other head in hands appointment you’d have been slightly relieved when McClaren turned up.

Could have been much worse, could have been much better. That was my opinion at the time.

  • 253 Belfast // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:06 PM

    Opposing conspiracy theory nearly

  • 254 GeordieTwo // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:08 PM

I don’t see many of our players showing enough concern and fight. We are hopeless away from home. Six goals scored. The structure of the club is all wrong. I don’t see us recovering from this so it’s relegation at the end of the season. Then many of the best players will leave. Poor effort from the top down. Sack yourself Ashley.

  • 255 GeordieTwo // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:09 PM

And by that I mean sell up and may we never see your face on Tyneside again.

  • 256 Rotonda heights // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:11 PM

    lesh at 199

if there’s four of him I’m sure he is visible

  • 257 GeordieTwo // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:11 PM

We had three of four opportunities for headed shots that should have been on net but weren’t. Made it easy for their goalie for most of the game. We don’t take our chances well enough. That screams out striker needed for me.

  • 258 Belfast // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:11 PM

I think nearly everytime Saviet won a tackle yesterday he gave it away straight after it lol

Seen somebody post he had a 55% pass completion rate. Wasn’t surprised at that.

  • 259 nearly // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:17 PM

belfast im not sure what to make of it ,i think they will go for townsend and try and get thauvin out on loan or do they take a hit on him now or the summer either way we are going to loose money on him

  • 260 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:19 PM

    Graham Carr
Got a funny feeling McLaren wants Townsend and Berahino whatever the price but I think Graham Carr is behind the stalling of the deals because it will push his nose out of joint.
Any-way anyone know who does the scouting in this country ?????

  • 261 beefman13 // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:21 PM

Mclaren says we are playing terrific stuff, that’s his inflated opinion even though we are having our moments, trouble is if we can’t win playing well then it can’t be anything else but a real battle for survival.

That said I don’t think we are as awesome as Shteve thinks we are, there is plenty of self pity going on there for me.

Any and every team know that Curly top has limited pace and they always seem to play off that, that is a major problem that should gave been sorted and gas not, it’s a real weakness in our team, in fact at one stage he almost gave up yesterday. Charnley this should have been first priority, ee are and will continue to get punished for this lack of foresight, we are getting what we deserve simple as.

  • 262 catchy in norway // Jan 24, 2016 at 7:24 PM

    jail.

i dont understand what you mean, my stance is the same is the same but different?
my stance is the same regardless, and if you cannot grasp it, then thats your problem not mine.
but i will try one last time.

its all about the football, the football and the philosophy. under P45 we had no system style philosophy, it was more about individual bits of skill, things he did not and cannot teach, he defends a nil-nil because he has a point, but he never tries to actually go out and win a game, home or away it was the same, poor football but with amazing goals when we scored. he also sapped the life out of the players, turning them into robots that had no minds of there own

now then there is Shteve, who is installing a sense of lets get the ball down and play it, we pass and move, we create chances from open play but just dont finish them off, for me the football is good to watch, regardless of who is playing, he gives the players a freedom to try and express themselves but also within a team structure, people slated HBA for being greedy, yet nearly every one of our goals scored were individual efforts under p45, Shteve has it the other way, some great team goals, but as OP pointed out, im baffled by his Subs and when they take place, the formation yesterday did not suit the players we have and thats why we lost the game, he should have played Chancle at LB and kept the rest of the team as they normally play, rolando had to much to do and was lost, but i do see him as our LW player..

my praise for Shteve is purely based on what i have seen this season, good football, and yes there have been some poor games too, but i would say more than half of them have been of a very good std where we have been unlucky not to win, we batted Sunderland, the ref spoiled it, as did he spoiled it vs man u,

P45 was never unlucky, because he never went for the win, he shut up shop way to soon.

Stop bullying poor bloggers, you bad big bugger, you………..lol

  • 264 dannitoon // Jan 25, 2016 at 4:53 AM

The problem is.. 95% of toon fans think a good player cost £15m+.. look at the agro when we baught perez… £1.2m = lack of ambition… FFS imagine the tears if we spent £400k on mahrez….
