Twitter Ablaze – Newcastle Agree Fee For Top Target

The Twitter universe is ablaze with the news that Newcastle have agreed a deal to sign Andros Townsend from Spurs and that deal could be completed in the next 24 hours.

Andros Townsend – fee agreed with Tottenham

Of course there’s no telling if there’s any truth to this and Twitter has started many a false rumor in the past, but on the other hand it would be great if Newcastle can formalize a deal for Townsend – because that will give us a much needed lift and some momentum.

It will also help us bring in a  striker that we so desperately need before the transfer window closes next Monday.

Here’s what Soccer Sauce had to say about it – it could be a done deal tomorrow.

Update: The Guardian is reporting that Mauricio Pochettino has personally got involved to request the club accept a lower bid and not surprisingly that´s about half way between what Newcastle offered and the £14M Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy wanted.

The report is that Levy has now agreed to the move in principle and now Townsend will be allowed to discuss personal terms with Newcastle, which is not expected to be a deal breaker.

Also being reported in the guardian.

Simple question, where will he play? As if it’s on the left then Perez drops out and it also pushed Aaron’s further back.

Personally think we need a striker in before anyone else as take Gini out of the side are we’d be rock bottom right now

I don’t believe this one yet. We badly need a striker but they are very hard come by now. I just don’t see Mitro and Perez being able to do enough to keep us up. We’re in a mess up to the eyebrows. Very dicey all over the pitch and no strength on the bench to speak of.

So we’re spending umpteen millions on an unfit, Spuds reject who hasn’t played a senior competitive match in yonks.

And we’re supposedly looking at spending stupid money on yet another Frenchman who has no Premier League experience and could be on par with Cabella, Thauvin or Marveaux rather than Cabaye, Sissoko or Remy.

Will Townsend or Lacazette prevent us from conceding every match?

Who would Townsend replace in the side? Probably Perez? Are we going to continue to play 3-5-2? If so we could field Sissoko, Shelvey, Townsend, Wij and Aarons across the midfield and Perez up front with Mitro I suppose.

    ‘TOWNSEND FEE AGREED’

Newcastle are close to signing Andros Townsend from Tottenham after the clubs agreed a compromise over the fee for the England winger, according to The Guardian.

Sky sources revealed earlier today that Newcastle, along with Watford, were still interested in Townsend but were struggling to match Spurs’ valuation, believed to be £14million.

However, the Guardian report Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has intervened to request his club accept Newcastle’s lower bid – understood to be somewhere in the middle of the two clubs’ valuations.

The news has now left the door open for Townsend to finally complete his move away from White Hart Lane, with the 24-year-old expected to finalise his move to the North East in the next 48 hours.

@G: “Somewhere between the two clubs valuations” – so somewhere between £10m and £14m. Let’s speculate £12m, right on the middle, and call it a day.

Either way, it’s approximately £7m too much imo. Would sooner spend £10m on Phillips.

I could understand the need for Shelvey, Saivet as well with Tiote looking like he’s off in the near future but Townsend, given our current state, doesn’t make a gat deal of sense to be honest.

We all know we are desperate for a striker as with our current batch we are heading for drop with alarming speed. We are also desperate for a left back to replace Dummett who is beyond poor and in an ideal world we’d be looking at a commanding centre half as we’ve been desperate for one for the past eight years or so. But a reported 12 ish million for a player who has never really done anything, who is currently banished from first team activities at Spurs seems madness……….oh wit, sorry, forgot this is Newcastke United and we specialise in deals that don’t make any sense.

SkyBet have us 1/8 favourites to sign him before the window shuts, would suggest it’s pretty nailed on.. Also Gomis is favourite to sign for us rather than stay at Swansea or sign for anyone else in January. Hope the last one isn’t true!

If the idea is to put pressure on the opposition with lots of pace in midfield it might work but it does nothing for our defensive liabilities. In general we score one and give up 2. Not a successful way to play the game. The strengthening should have been done properly last summer instead of messing about with players like Thauvin.

If he’s played on the left then that means we could see Perez, who has been one of the few players who has turned up this season, dropped, and it will also push Aaron’s further down the pecking order which is the last thing we need, I can’t see SM dropping Sissoko as he has played well this season and more than that I simply don’t see what he’s done to justify a price tag like £12 million? And that amount when we have massive holes in the squad seems a crazy move even for this lot of chancers

The mistakes that will sink us have been made and are not being fixed. Our defense is terrible and nothing is going to change there. We’re going to concede 60-65 goals or more which is a disaster.

And as Jibberish mentioned earlier, I’ve just seen that Leicester have turned down Remy on loan, so he’s available, will grab at least 8 goals between now and May, take the pressure right off Mitro and save us from the drop ???

Oh good another 8 figure sum wasted on a crap winger. Hasn’t managed 90 minutes in a league game for 2 years. Just what the doctor ordered.
This is about on par with signing Shefki Kuqi but at least he wasn’t £12m.
For those saying he’s premier league proven, he has appeared in a total of 35 premier league games, most of those either as a sub or substituted at some point. So probably 20 games worth of experience, about the same as Wijnaldum has now but spread over several years, in other words bugger all.
Also if he couldn’t finish a game when he was properly match fit what chance now when he’s had his feet up for the last few months?

When he was at his best a couple of seasons ago wasn’t Townsend used as an AM from the right side? He has good pace and a decent shot. He won’t fix what is wrong with us defensively but if we are paying a fortune for him we had better play him.

Think we should get Oba Martins in on loan from the MLS, I’m sure they should be on their winter break now. Everyone keeps saying they want a strong pacy frontman to play on the shoulder, he’s your man. Some of the goals he has scored in the MLS have been frickin incredible.

You say he’s a game changer?

    Based on what exactly?

If the first team was set and all the massive holes we have had been properly filled in them adding Townsend would be a good move but with the current state we find ourselves in we need other areas dealt with before adding this lad
