Twitter Ablaze – Newcastle Agree Fee For Top Target

7:56 pm, Monday, January 25th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 270 Comments

The Twitter universe is ablaze with the news that Newcastle have agreed a deal to sign Andros Townsend from Spurs and that deal could be completed in the next 24 hours.

Andros Townsend after scoring for England v Italy

Andros Townsend – fee agreed with Tottenham

Of course there’s no telling if there’s any truth to this and Twitter has started many a false rumor in the past, but on the other hand it would be great if Newcastle can formalize a deal for Townsend – because that will give us a much needed lift and some momentum.

It will also help us bring in a  striker that we so desperately need before the transfer window closes next Monday.

Here’s what Soccer Sauce had to say about it – it could be a done deal tomorrow.

Update: The Guardian is reporting that Mauricio Pochettino has personally got involved to request the club accept a lower bid and not surprisingly that´s about half way between what Newcastle offered and the £14M Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy wanted.

The report is that Levy has now agreed to the move in principle and now Townsend will be allowed to discuss personal terms with Newcastle, which is not expected to be a deal breaker.

Comments welcome.

Also being reported in the guardian.

Simple question, where will he play? As if it’s on the left then Perez drops out and it also pushed Aaron’s further back.

Personally think we need a striker in before anyone else as take Gini out of the side are we’d be rock bottom right now

    Can he play left back?

  • 8 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:04 PM

Wahey what did I tell you? we cool our interest and then sign them!!!

  • 9 GeordieTwo // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:04 PM

I don’t believe this one yet. We badly need a striker but they are very hard come by now. I just don’t see Mitro and Perez being able to do enough to keep us up. We’re in a mess up to the eyebrows. Very dicey all over the pitch and no strength on the bench to speak of.

  • 10 Jib // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:05 PM

Anybody find the air in here hot ?

Oh hello Jesper my little Danish pastry !

I didn’t notice you sweating away in the corner.

  • 11 switch365 // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:09 PM

So we’re spending umpteen millions on an unfit, Spuds reject who hasn’t played a senior competitive match in yonks.

And we’re supposedly looking at spending stupid money on yet another Frenchman who has no Premier League experience and could be on par with Cabella, Thauvin or Marveaux rather than Cabaye, Sissoko or Remy.

Will Townsend or Lacazette prevent us from conceding every match?

  • 12 GeordieTwo // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:10 PM

Who would Townsend replace in the side? Probably Perez? Are we going to continue to play 3-5-2? If so we could field Sissoko, Shelvey, Townsend, Wij and Aarons across the midfield and Perez up front with Mitro I suppose.

  • 13 G // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:10 PM

Anybody quoted a fee, the money wanted by Levy was crazy, please dont let us have spraffed 14m on a bit part player!

  • 14 toontaff2 // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:16 PM

Todd Kane right back on loan in Holland, from Chelsea and Anthony Ujah from Werder Bremmen, a Nigerian striker – you heard it here second!

  • 15 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:16 PM

Newcastle are close to signing Andros Townsend from Tottenham after the clubs agreed a compromise over the fee for the England winger, according to The Guardian.

Sky sources revealed earlier today that Newcastle, along with Watford, were still interested in Townsend but were struggling to match Spurs’ valuation, believed to be £14million.

However, the Guardian report Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has intervened to request his club accept Newcastle’s lower bid – understood to be somewhere in the middle of the two clubs’ valuations.

The news has now left the door open for Townsend to finally complete his move away from White Hart Lane, with the 24-year-old expected to finalise his move to the North East in the next 48 hours.

  • 16 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:16 PM

Does this mean Welsh leaves the blog?

  • 17 Thump // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:16 PM

@G: “Somewhere between the two clubs valuations” – so somewhere between £10m and £14m. Let’s speculate £12m, right on the middle, and call it a day.

Either way, it’s approximately £7m too much imo. Would sooner spend £10m on Phillips.

And Inside Out tonight -The Shrinking Sunderland – what a laugh!

  • 19 JackButler // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:17 PM

I could understand the need for Shelvey, Saivet as well with Tiote looking like he’s off in the near future but Townsend, given our current state, doesn’t make a gat deal of sense to be honest.

We all know we are desperate for a striker as with our current batch we are heading for drop with alarming speed. We are also desperate for a left back to replace Dummett who is beyond poor and in an ideal world we’d be looking at a commanding centre half as we’ve been desperate for one for the past eight years or so. But a reported 12 ish million for a player who has never really done anything, who is currently banished from first team activities at Spurs seems madness……….oh wit, sorry, forgot this is Newcastke United and we specialise in deals that don’t make any sense.

  • 20 G // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:17 PM

  • 21 Jail for Ashley // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:20 PM

I thought it was going to be Lacazette 🙁
Exactly, where’s he going to play ?

  • 22 CookyToon // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:21 PM

SkyBet have us 1/8 favourites to sign him before the window shuts, would suggest it’s pretty nailed on.. Also Gomis is favourite to sign for us rather than stay at Swansea or sign for anyone else in January. Hope the last one isn’t true!

  • 23 GeordieTwo // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:21 PM

If the idea is to put pressure on the opposition with lots of pace in midfield it might work but it does nothing for our defensive liabilities. In general we score one and give up 2. Not a successful way to play the game. The strengthening should have been done properly last summer instead of messing about with players like Thauvin.

  • 24 Jail for Ashley // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:22 PM

We had four fit defenders on Saturday, Collo is due an injury and when was the ladt time a player played 38 games in a season for us so Mbemba might miss a few. FFS

  • 25 JackButler // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:25 PM

If he’s played on the left then that means we could see Perez, who has been one of the few players who has turned up this season, dropped, and it will also push Aaron’s further down the pecking order which is the last thing we need, I can’t see SM dropping Sissoko as he has played well this season and more than that I simply don’t see what he’s done to justify a price tag like £12 million? And that amount when we have massive holes in the squad seems a crazy move even for this lot of chancers

  • 26 jazzyp // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:25 PM

Hopefully he will be the first of many this week. Who gives a toss what Townsend cost so long he helps us stay up.

  • 27 GeordieTwo // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:25 PM

The mistakes that will sink us have been made and are not being fixed. Our defense is terrible and nothing is going to change there. We’re going to concede 60-65 goals or more which is a disaster.

  • 28 ToonRich // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:25 PM

Would any of you take Super Mario back to the premier league in our current predicament?!!

  • 29 Jail for Ashley // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:25 PM

And as Jibberish mentioned earlier, I’ve just seen that Leicester have turned down Remy on loan, so he’s available, will grab at least 8 goals between now and May, take the pressure right off Mitro and save us from the drop ???

  • 30 SUTTY1978 // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:26 PM

Oh good another 8 figure sum wasted on a crap winger. Hasn’t managed 90 minutes in a league game for 2 years. Just what the doctor ordered.
This is about on par with signing Shefki Kuqi but at least he wasn’t £12m.
For those saying he’s premier league proven, he has appeared in a total of 35 premier league games, most of those either as a sub or substituted at some point. So probably 20 games worth of experience, about the same as Wijnaldum has now but spread over several years, in other words bugger all.
Also if he couldn’t finish a game when he was properly match fit what chance now when he’s had his feet up for the last few months?

  • 31 GeordieTwo // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:30 PM

When he was at his best a couple of seasons ago wasn’t Townsend used as an AM from the right side? He has good pace and a decent shot. He won’t fix what is wrong with us defensively but if we are paying a fortune for him we had better play him.

  • 32 Moonraker15 // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:30 PM

Betting suspended on Lacazette signing for a EPL club !!!

  • 33 Setchell // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:30 PM

Some people on here need a reality check! Who do you all think we are capable of signing?? Townsend is a different player to what we have, and a game changer! To say he is a poor signing is a joke!

  • 34 SUTTY1978 // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:31 PM

Think we should get Oba Martins in on loan from the MLS, I’m sure they should be on their winter break now. Everyone keeps saying they want a strong pacy frontman to play on the shoulder, he’s your man. Some of the goals he has scored in the MLS have been frickin incredible.

  • 35 SUTTY1978 // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:33 PM

Setchell “a game changer”? So in other words a bench warmer. Budge up Thauvin we have another shit winger who needs a seat.

the crassness of some posters on here is breathtaking (I made one anyway)

  • 40 JackButler // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:36 PM

You say he’s a game changer?

    Based on what exactly?

If the first team was set and all the massive holes we have had been properly filled in them adding Townsend would be a good move but with the current state we find ourselves in we need other areas dealt with before adding this lad

  • 41 Setchell // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:37 PM

Sutty… You will be eating your words soon enough. He wont be on the bench, and adds extra excitement tp the team. Yes we need a striker and couple of defenders but quality in depth is what we need. As everyone knows we always get injuries and if we didnt have depth people would twine. And it aint our money so why people so hung up on transfer fees? If we didnt sign him there is nothing to say they would spend elsewhere!

  • 42 Jail for Ashley // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:38 PM

It’s staggering to think we’re buying a player who hasn’t managed 90 minutes in two years if true

  • 43 GeordieTwo // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:39 PM

The answer is always to sign another MF JB mate. Have problems in defense? Sign a midfielder. Trouble finishing? Sign a midfielder. Weak in goal? You guessed it, sign that MF.

Jib, I seem to remember having the same mocking from you when I said Thauvin was a useless turd when we signed him. Clearly I was proven right on that occasion and it will play out the same with Townsend. Wonder who we will try to loan him to when he fails miserably?

  • 47 Graeme // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:42 PM

According to “The Express” the fee is £10.5 million

  • 48 ToonMatt // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:42 PM

Would anyone have Jose Enrique back? His contracts up in 6 months and I read he is no longer wanted at Liverpool, He was quality when we had him and we are desperate for a left back, I would have him on loan for the rest of the season, Anyone else?

  • 49 GeordieTwo // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:43 PM

The club is an insane asylum. Desperate, poor signings, one after another. Cabella, then Thauvin, now Saivet. What a waste of time and money.

  • 50 Setchell // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:44 PM

Something else I dont quite understand is why when signing someone would you not get behind them instead of on there back straight away? Makes no sense to me….

  • 51 2 goals 1 cup // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:44 PM

townsend cant say im to exited would rather of stuck with thuran even cabbella would have just kept him original instead of all this chopping and changing now we have spent 40 million on wingers with two out on loan now and i doubt we will ever get half the money back that we payed for them. If only ben arfa wasent miss managed and we had kept hold of him we could have spent the money more wisely on defence and upfront. now we have set all are hopes on another 12 million man when we could have just loaned remy i hope im wrong on this and towsend proves me wrong but cant see it happening

  • 52 optimistic prime // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:44 PM

Wouldn’t be my choice of player and position but I’m happy we have another body in and I’ll give him a fair go, the Black and White may fit him like a glove.

Good luck to Townsend, Goodbye to Welsh. Every cloud n all that.

  • 53 SUTTY1978 // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:46 PM

Setchell. i had the same problem when we bought Thauvin. It was an unnecessary and poor signing which we didnt need and meant that we wouldnt be signing a player we did need, like a ST & CB. Same this time, guess what, we still need a ST & CB but we just have another useless winger.
Yes Townsend looks ok if you look at his 5 minute youtube spool which covers his only good moments over a span of 3 years but in the real world he’s next to useless.

  • 54 Jib // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:46 PM

    That wasn’t mocking
I was saying you haven’t got a clue

  • 55 JackButler // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:46 PM

Simply because we are adding a £12 million player, who hasn’t kicked a ball in anger this season before addressing the real issues with the squad. Adding squad depth is adding players to make a difference, like bringing in a left back or centre half or God forbid a classy striker.

Townsend comes in when we already have SEVEN wingers, but only one left back in Haidara who is out injured, one right back, four half arsed centre halfs and two strikers who can’t score, so yes we need to add strength to the squad but the right players in the right areas

  • 56 why oh why // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:47 PM

It’s been a long time since we had two England internationals at a major tournament. Euros we will .shelvey and Townsend
Andros for me is a really good buy . A proper traditional winger .
    All round good buy

  • 57 2 goals 1 cup // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:47 PM

ToonMatt yes i would have him back cant understand why we havent made the move already he ticks a lot of boxes and he will fit in straight away no bedding in period with him

  • 58 Setchell // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:49 PM

Name the wingers in order of your opinion of rating? Just curious, include townsend aswel. I know its a bit early but just curious?

  • 59 SUTTY1978 // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:49 PM

Jib, clearly I do. I call it like I see it. Said Thauvin was shit, you said he was fantastic. How is it that I don’t have a clue?

  • 62 NoahJ // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:53 PM

The guardian are reporting it’s £10m

I think this is fair all things considering. Personally don’t rate him, but will be fully behind him if he signs.

Will be meaningless, though, unless he’s followed by a striker

  • 63 Tsunki // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:56 PM

Someone better run and tell the the the gates of Arkham are ajar. What kind of podged fiasco is this club cobbling now ha ha what a team we are putting together. I think they have all Europe’s wayward sons inked on a board and they are chucking darts over their heads at it.

  • 64 JackButler // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:56 PM

You just don’t get it, we add another winger to the list but continue on with Dummett at left back and Mitrovic up front.

If the club came out and spent that money on a left back or centre half every single fan would be overjoyed, but Townsend just adds more imbalance to an already imbalanced squad.

If Perez or Sissoko picks up an injury at least we can cover them, without adding Townsend, but if Jaanmatt, Dummett or Mitrovic pick up an injury we are screwed.

Yes the likes of Obertan and Gouffran are not good enough long term, but they can cover injuries until the summer while that 12 million is spent where it’s actually needed Townsend also pushes Aaron’s further down the pecking order.

  • 65 nearly // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:56 PM

how much of darlow have you actually seen ,1 game im guessing unless you also follow forest

  • 66 Ian Toon // Jan 25, 2016 at 8:57 PM

Setchell – More importantly pace. We now have Shelvey to hit him in wide areas. We just don’t currently get behind defences enough, particularly down the left. This has been a problem all season and it just puts additional pressure on Dummet. Sissoko is OK on the right. Perez has a few tricks and is good on the ball but lacks pace.
Pace unsettles. It gives us something different in the final third but we need someone to convert chances. The crucial signing ST to come.

  • 78 geordie157 // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:02 PM

It’s funny how the people who were saying Elliot was a league one keeper are now singing his praises, now it’s darlow who’s rubbish, he was good in the championship and is a capable back up.

Even alnwick who admittedly looked awful at times has become a decent league 1 keeper.

  • 79 SUTTY1978 // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:02 PM

I definitely wish Andros the best… he’s a Tottenham lad.
But he certainly belongs at a lower level club… his directness fits right in there and his lack of overall game awareness and passing won’t stick out like a sore thumb.

    Row Z mourns this loss

A couple of comments from a spuds blog on Townsend going. Zero comments from anyone saying they wish he was staying.

  • 80 Setchell // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:03 PM

Totally agree, as I say I know its not all we need but it doesn’t make him a bad singing. I infact think if we sign a striker that can finish we will have had a good transfer window. A left back is needed aswell but think we could get by without one until the summer. Not saying I don’t want us to sign a lb just don’t think we will.

  • 81 brklyngeordie // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:03 PM

I know I always complain about Sissoko but really can’t stand him will never reach his potential just doesn’t really care enough could be a great player has raw attributes but if he has not been able to refine his game at this age never will plus does not have a true position he is a shit winger and doesn’t have passing ability nor battling quality it takes to be a boss midfielder sell while people want him for as much as possible please I guarantee we will be a better team once he is gone

  • 82 ToonInPlym // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:03 PM

Don’t think anything will come out of the Lacazette buzz, as much as I’d love that guy to come!
On Townsend, haven’t been excited about the potential signing… Average and a bit lightweight, hasn’t played alot of football. This from the guardian – ‘It is now nearly two years since he completed a full Premier League match for the club.’
Think the board will make it a squeaky bum transfer window again.

  • 83 JackButler // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:03 PM

It does make it a poor signing, not saying he’s a poor player, but we are adding something we are not desperate for at the expense of chancing our arm by not strengthening positions we have zero cover.

I’m not slating the player as I’d judge him on his performances for us, like I do with every single player, with the exception of Thauvin as I watched him for two years and knew he bomb with us.

We don’t need Townsend or any other winger without first adding a left back, centre half and striker

  • 84 Ravensd // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:03 PM

  • 96 JamesToon // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:09 PM

Remy on loan is probably the most reliable striker we can go for that’s available atm, he will guarantee goals, intelligence and will add much needed pace, then we address a long term option in the summer. Don’t care if he’s a mercenary, we need goals to keep us up.

  • 97 p // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:10 PM

I am sure they would prefer to buy a striker, not sure if they share the same urgency most fans do for a LB.

Still, if the striker has nothing to do with the townsend deal, should it not sill be done?

media is media but there seems a consensus that we are not saying we will sign one more player and that will be Townsend.

Let’s face it, he can’t make us any worse.

  • 98 brklyngeordie // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:11 PM

I’d take chance on Balo knowing full well it won’t work but just because him and Mitro would be pure entertainment and piss a lot of people off

  • 99 Setchell // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:11 PM

Really unsure, bit of a hot head and could make things worse… Could you imagine mitro and him in same dressing room? Probably wouldn’t want him to be honest, but would back him if he came in.

  • 100 toonking // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:12 PM

If macca doesn’t walk having not been given a goal scoring striker he desperately needs it’s yet more signs of a pardew 2. He speaks total bull, he’s always dong poor against the teams who’s result really matter and he appears acceptant of a terrible transfer policy.

  • 101 Ian Toon // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:12 PM

Setchell- With Townshend in front of him Dummet will be less exposed to opposition wide man and their FB. Playing an Offensive game with more possession will move us 10 yards further up the pitch.
Townshend will get us more free kicks and penalties I would suggest. Townshend needs regular football and he will improve us.

  • 102 p // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:13 PM

    1 Remy
    2 Berahino
    3 Lacazette

that would be my priority in terms of the strikers linked to us.

Personally, I still think Berahino is the most likely

    Finally someone speaking sense

  • 104 ToonRich // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:15 PM

Id purely like to see him for the entertainment factor! I totally agree him and mitro could quite easily butt heads…on the other hand they could become like the bash brothers and bully the opponents together!!
He’s still young, knows how to score, has prem experience and may want to come back and prove some doubters wrong! If WBA are being touted as a possible destination I don’t see why we couldn’t be!

  • 105 brklyngeordie // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:15 PM

Surprised no one seems to like the prospects of Caicedo from Espanyol and former Man City player man is a Beast and always thought would get another shot in the Prem

  • 106 Ibizatoon // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:16 PM

Logic and reason tend to get skewed in times of crisis. Some may think it’s “negative” to consider the club in crisis at this stage, but we’ve been in the same position all season. People aren’t saying its impossible to get out of, but proper steps need to be taken.

That’s not negativity imo, that’s assessing a situation and looking at what needs to be done.

As for Townsend, no, he probably won’t “make us any worse”, but the argument is will he make us better? We need better, we need to be making moves that we’re confident will pull us away from the relegation zone.

That’s the situation. At least to me. The summer was the time to gamble (if you need to). Not now, given our situation. Not sure what’s hard to understand about that.

  • 107 optimistic prime // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:16 PM

I don’t think LB is a major concern until the end of the season.

Dummet may not be a recognised LB and doesn’t get foward like the Turkey who’s regularly roasted at RB but he’s a solid defender.

I can’t understand why people think LB is so important considering most of the goals we concede come from the other side. Most of Jaanmats crossing is atrocious he may get foward but usually it’s pointless, his runs foward have cost us way more goals than they’ve created.

We need a Goalie a LB a RB a Striker a CB, for me a striker is the most important signing we need. What’s the point having balls into the box Mitro creating chances and no one scoring.

Goals win games, I’d rather keep Dummeg at LB and buy players who are going to score or create opportunities for others. How often does a LB win a game.

Thats all well and good but Dummett is always getting injured ! We will be looking to rush him back against Everton and its doubtful he will stay fit the rest of the season so we need someone to take his place or improve upon him!!

We do concede goals from our right hand side but no wonder we get exposed because Janmaat is expected to attack the whole game and Sissoko does not track back !!

We are so unbalanced as nothing comes from the left wing

We need a striker and a left back if we dont get both it will be a failed window again!!

Toonrich…For the most part, I’m sure you’re right.

I didn’t really expand the point I was trying to make (then apparently didn’t make at all 🙂 ). IMO we should have gambled in the summer and got in more players. Some people thought it would be a gamble as there would be too much change at once (still gives me a slight giggle).

Don’t want to appear rude, but I’m not really interested in listing players I think the club should target. I’m by no means a great scout of player and what’s the point, can’t imagine they’ll be anything like the people we’re targetting 🙂

Quality over Quantity…Townsend. Jury is out. Certainly looked some player a couple of years ago, when he broke in to the England team. I’m not sure why he hasn’t been able to keep that going, and have little faith that NUFC holds the keys to solve said problem.

I guess we should probably wait a little longer and see he actually signs first.

Not sure how to respond, when I’m far from convinced that Steve is even here to really build a team, let alone his own one.

The whole club needs a big lift. I’m not one for saying throw cash for the sake of it, but address some key issues with gumption and I’m sure fans, and the team, would respond well.

They however are the professionals. So we’ll watch and take it all in.

  • 125 optimistic prime // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:34 PM

We have Haidra Anita Cloback Dummet who’ve all played at LB, how much cover do we have at RB.

We need a decent medical team more than a LB.

The best of it is people are saying Willems or Enrique. Enrique was garbage at pool that’s why he lost his place, Willems is from a different league and returning from injury. The same posters are saying we need PL experience, or players who can come straight in and do a job, then they call for those two.

Signing Townsend looks like a calculated move, they are bringing in Sissoko’s summer replacement early, it pads the squad out, and, Sissoko’s sale will finance the move in the end.

I have not seen a whole lot of Townsend to judge, he looks to have spark and plays with urgency, which may be useful. Newcastle fans love exciting players, so he will have the chance to win us all over.

beggars can’t be choosers, we won’t get much better than the ones we are in for.

I don’t Townsend would have come a couple of seasons ago. He is out in the cold, wants to get to the Euros and not many clubs are desperate enough to pay the fee spurs want and can afford it.

Similar for Berahino or Remy, a marriage of convenience, that’s all.

I do not care how much Mike has to spend though and even if we do go down, more of a problem for Mike than me. I still get to follow the team, watch matches, idolize crap players etc, he loese millions.

  • 140 Jail for Ashley // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:46 PM

    Toon Rich,
Remy is a no brainer as it has now been publicised by Leicester turning him down that he is available
Can we please have a stop on posters adding toon to their names, there are just far too many out there.

  • 141 Ian Toon // Jan 25, 2016 at 9:46 PM

We’re more of an attacking threat down the right. Janmaat particularly in the early stages of season was the main threat going forward. He gets forward on the right whereas Dummet whilst improving defensively lacks Janmaat’s awareness and control going forward.
As such there’s a trade off on the right to press higher up the field which results in the opposition exploiting gaps. We do need to stop sides exploiting space between both central defence and full backs and defence and midfield. We do need to be more compact against Everton
    something Swansea did well.

I think Townsend would improve the starting XI if bought or loaned so good signing, I think he’ll prove alot of the doubters wrong…..having said all that I don’t believe his crossing is good.

To have sissoko down one wing and Townsend down the other then it should give us the additional pace and power needed, Townsend go go either way as well so I see this as a positive.

More importantly it gives the team balance, unlike some I couldn’t give a shit if mitrovic scores or not, as long as he’s contributing to the build up and with his hold up play that should be enough for midfield runners to score. The very people twisting at mitro were the same people who were calling out for someone with his ability, cisse didn’t offer anything other than goals they wanted someone to hold it up etc. Show some patience and more importantly get behind the kid….because after all that’s all he is, a kid with bags of potential and a lad with a seriously good reputation in Europe!!

Do not worry about the blog names – if you post something and are shot down you just invent a new name and post supportive posts about yourself – your original name – then quickly change names to give the impression of an indepenent conversation. If if does not work – invent another name and so on – eventually some of the dopes will go along with you.

    2 goals 1 cup

We need players I agree with you on that but we need players that will be effective on the pitch and remy, Enrique need to be on the pitch to do that not the treatment table. Remy when needed this season has always been out injured and Enrique playing 1 game in 2 years isn’t going to improve the team.

I think a CB is priority as much as I don’t rate dummett, the issues stem from the cb pairing and Janmaat who forgets his first job is to be a defender. I’d keep Tiote as I don’t feel saivet will do what’s required this season.

Upfront I’d go with a 2nd striker to complement mitro not remy to replace him for a game or 2 and then sit on the treatment table along with Enrique. Berahino possibly a decent option buy needs to lose weight

If we don’t get Berahino then I’d go for Andre Gray, a bit of additional pace. Berahino as first choice. Ben Davis or Neil Taylor as LB options if needed or even the Everton kid Browning on loan. CB I’d go for Vlaar who back from his injury but would give us some stability and communication….he’s on a free. Short term fix but even if he plays 6 or 8 games it’s better than nothing at all.

  • 200 2 goals 1 cup // Jan 25, 2016 at 11:32 PM

i here what your saying with there injury records and not playing. But one of them is a free agent in the summer so he will have a something to prove and remys got the euros so he will want to impress. there no way that i would want the two of them to be sighned permanent thou i just see them as a short term fix. Vlaar is a good option ticks a lot of boxes think he could replace colo permanently but bit risky changing centre back at this stage but might just make colo buck his ideas up

  • 201 Our Toon // Jan 25, 2016 at 11:32 PM

Still beating that British drum….go vote UKIP man will ya!!

    2 goals 1 cup

Leicester bought Huth and changed them defensively they stayed up. It’s risky bringing in any player, Vlaar just for his experience alone would be handy.

My concern with loaning both Remy and Enrique is that they won’t last more than 3 games before breaking down leaving us with the same options. Enrique especially in 2 years he’s barely kicked a football.

Remy this season has had Ankle, Hamstring, Groin and calf injuries which have kept him out for mist of the season. As for the euros he has no chance in hell, if he played a whole season then yes but playing for 3 months won’t do his chances any good

  • 204 manxpie // Jan 25, 2016 at 11:38 PM

I know it’s not your point but it’s something you mention almost everyday. If British players were as good as you make them out to be then England would have won more than just 1 world cup back in 66.

It doesn’t matter what nationality you are, the ethos of the club behind the scenes is poison. Shelvey was class against West ham but tried going Hollywood to often at the weekend instead of playing it to feet… matter who the players are they need to all step up

Again I feel we are overpaying for average players but there’s got to be cheaper better alternatives out there desperate to do their business in the best league in the world.
Remy I would take on loan however, enrique? The lad got torn a new one in the fa cup and looked like his legs had gone so no thanks.our scouting/transfer policy needs a good shake up and Mr carr along with Charnley need a good kick up the behind,

Pretty funny, if it’s true, that Pochetinno has basically said of Townsend “don’t worry about the money just get him out of here”. So that would add to the signing of Shelvey, unwanted and shunned by another relegation- threatened team, and Saivet, who on first impression at least looks to be useless. Another great window in the making. I’m trying to see the funny side of all this, I really am, it’s the best way to through it if you can manage it. I mean it has practically descended into farce, and people laugh at that yeah?

  • 247 Santon03 // Jan 26, 2016 at 4:09 AM

I’m not sure who will be dropped for Townsend.
Perez or Mitro, one of them will be lone striker, I would prefer Perez to play and Townsend as LW.

  • 248 Santon03 // Jan 26, 2016 at 4:13 AM

We only one spot for striker, we have Perez, Mitro, Cisse, Rivi, Tooney, Arma (next season). We have currently 5 strikers for 1 spot in the team, I’m not sure buying another one will be good idea unless we can ship out 2.

  • 249 toonincheek // Jan 26, 2016 at 4:44 AM

I really don’t see Dross Townsend being first choice anywhere except the bench.

To cover for injuries, ‘impact’ player or rotation – Yes – but no more than that.

  • 250 The overrated Frenchman // Jan 26, 2016 at 5:41 AM

Assuming we are relegated, would this be the most expensively assembled PL team to have suffered this indignity? What’s been spent on this squad in transfer fees – off the top of my head I’m thinking over £100 million. Fair effort that.

  • 251 JDdubai // Jan 26, 2016 at 5:45 AM

Townsend must be the LW choice, unless Sissoko disappears this window – Sissoko will stay RW, Wini as the 10, Mitro up front. Plus Townsend will have assurances that he will play I would think in the run up to the Euros.

As for CF next season Id think Cisse and possibly Riviere will be off, Toney needs to loan for the season and Arma will depend on what league we are in. If we stay up then Id send him on loan again to a championship side. If we go down, then WE are the chapionship team so he will stay with us.

Perez and Mitro are both clearly not going to be prolific either so we need someone else to put the ball in the net.

  • 252 toonincheek // Jan 26, 2016 at 6:04 AM

    JD –

I accept neither Perez or Mitro have been as prolific “as we would like” in scoring goals but I really can’t see anyone except Remy improving that.

Certainly Mitro, and to some extent Perez, have been prolific in creating opportunities for others, so let’s not dismiss their contribution too quickly.

  • 253 p // Jan 26, 2016 at 6:06 AM

    Morning Ron… 😉

  • 256 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 26, 2016 at 6:09 AM

Well, it looks a lot like Townsend will be joining us. Not overly thrilled at the prospect, but another body through the door, and he will at the very least add pace further up the pitch. It should allow Shelvey to play passes that get us in behind, and offers us another outlet to take pressure off the defence by getting higher up the pitch and transitioning quicker. He will want to do well for the Euro’s, so he should be making every effort to perform to the best of his abilities, so let’s hope for the best.

Not sure why people think he will offer greater protection to Dummet, he was pilloried by many Spurs fans for being lazy off the ball.

Anyway, not been on since the weekend, but Macca got it very wrong in his selection and substitutions. We played well and created chances the previous week at West Ham, and whilst we may have been short at left back, rejigging the entire side from one that had started to look better and create more seems a bit of an overreaction. Mbemba has played left back before, so if we are comfortable bringing Lascelles in anyway then why didn’t we go for that?

Aarons, first game in months, and asked to play left wing back? Crazy decision. Saivet didn’t impress, and looks like he may need a bedding in period, not a huge surprise there. In which case, they need to not sell Tiote. Tiote alongside Shelvey would allow Shelvey to play his game rather than having to focus more on the defensive aspects.

The best chances we had were once again created by Mitro rather than for him. Mitro needs to start getting a few more goals, but he is creating for others, and maybe a strike partner with him could finish where others are failing.

Where would another striker fit in though? Drop Gini? Sissoko? Townsend? Perez? Shelvey? I think it will be fairly safe to say that Townsend will start once up to speed regardless. Shelvey too, and it would be difficult to drop Gini, and we all know Sissoko won’t take kindly to being dropped – particularly after saying he knew he would start every week so why leave NUFC now before the Euro’s. So it looks like Shelvey would have to play a more defensive midfield role, and Gini will have to drop deeper, rather than just behind Mitro.

The more I think about it the more it should have been a player signed for the left who can play through the middle and is a goalscorer – a Berahino or Remy from the ones we have been linked with, as otherwise we are going to be looking at playing people in roles where they won’t be as effective for the team.

Over to you Macca. Good coach, but so far not covering yourself in glory when it comes to tactics or match day decision making.

  • 260 jimmysmith // Jan 26, 2016 at 6:29 AM

Yay!!!…and if not, and one of Remy or Berahino in along with him, then Ashley, Charnley, Carr and McClaren need to be frogmarched out and summarily shot against a wall, without even the courtesy of a blindfold, and in Carr’s case a final Gauloise, and if Llambias were still lingering about, not even a reach around.

Pathetic effort otherwise. Total load of rubbish.

  • 261 Slank // Jan 26, 2016 at 6:32 AM

    Lil @ 256

I didn’t see anything wrong with the formation itself but as ManU found out at the start of the season players don’t easily adapt to a new formation from what they have previously been accustomed to.

I thought playing Aarons was wrong. He didn’t seem fully fit.

Saivet will take time to adapt to the more physical and quicker Premier League. His defensive midfield position is possibly the hardest position to adapt to for a foreigner. Unfortunately he is going to be compared to Tiote when he was in his prime.

I thought Shelvey missed Colback who does a lot of tidy unglamorous work that is often overlooked by many fans.

I think the central three will be Townsend, Gini and Sissoko when Townsend is fully fit.

  • 262 jimmysmith // Jan 26, 2016 at 6:37 AM

….and not forgetting, in all this melodrama, a left back, cos we aven’t fuggen got a single one of them.

  • 263 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 26, 2016 at 6:45 AM

I don’t mind 352 formations, but if your players aren’t used to it and aren’t used to playing it together, then it is a bad decision to play that formation. Particularly when your side is in the bottom three and in need of points.

I agree, it won’t be easy for Saivet, which makes it odd that we would be so quick to get rid of Tiote, who despite a poor fitness record is far and away our best player in that role. Shelvey missed Colback, because Shelvey was left doing more of the defensive duties. Tiote would have made us stronger through the centre. I don’t see the rush to get him out other than financial, particularly if Gouffran is going to keep being used in the centre.

By central three do you mean the 3 in a 4231? I can’t imagine you mean central as in the central 3 of a 352? I think we lose goals by bringing in Townsend for Perez, which is why I’d prefer a Remy/Berahino type player to slot in there and play slightly higher as Dummet doesn’t get forward as much.

I think we need goals, but signing Townsend limits our options as to where a goalscorer fits in, as he will have been assured of a place.

I wonder whether these (potential) January signings are making sure relegation release clauses are in their contracts. The club would be sensible to have wage reductions in there, and if the club ask for that the players will be asking for release options.

  • 268 Ian Toon // Jan 26, 2016 at 7:08 AM

Watching a rejuvenated Burnley and Joey Barton took me back to the arrival at the toon of Cabaye and the passing into folklore of JB. It was summer 2011 and a time of tantrums from Bartton with him openly losing it in a pre season friendly against Leeds. Barton was upset over not taking set-pieces and that he was not the captain. This continued on Twitter on the team coach after the game with Barton being highly critical of Ashley and the running of the club. Journalists had a field day arguably to the detriment of the club. A few days later Barton was available on a free transfer.
For many toon fans Barton became a cult figure ( this was before his philosopher period and appearances on Newsnight) and the anti Ashley brigade had a shot in the arm. Looking back I would argue that Cabaye became a far more influential player. Just look at what happened when Cabaye left; with the wheels falling off. The Barton claim of the sale of so called influential players and the lack of incoming replacements was groundless. Many had overlooked Barton’s self interest and that he had been in contract dispute for months. His agent attempted to embody the anti Ashley mood to support his client case whilst at the same time attempting to flush out interest from other clubs. Fans supporting Barton criticised journalists for taking the club’s party line with much conspiracy theory madness on social media.
Just as there is today some fans assumed whenever anything went wrong that Mike Ashley was to blame. No thought, no analysis of facts or motive necessary. It’s Ashley’s fault. It’s a convenient position to take advantage of for those wishing to further their own agenda. It’s even become a self-fulfilling prophecy for some. Nothing the club do can have any value, therefore no potential signing can possibly be good enough. Criticise Ashley by all means, more likely than not he’ll deserve it. Just think it through before the knee jerk reaction.

  • 269 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 26, 2016 at 7:19 AM

Barton passed into folklore? Think you may well be over egging the pudding on that one. Cabaye was at the club two and a half years, and he had a good year and a half. For almost a full season he was largely anonymous. I liked Cabaye, and he was a good player, but a couple of the wheels had fallen off before he left, hence the need to sign a number of players one January to give the battle for survival a shot in the arm. Once Cabaye left another wheel went, and that saw us plummet -using Ashley’s very own horse and cart theory, the cart would continue albeit less stable if 2 wheels fell off, once the third goes it is curtains. Ironically, part of the reason we did plummet was because no replacement was signed to replace him. Exactly what Joey Barton criticised the club for.

Joey Barton whilst far from the most elegant of players would have been a great player to have in the squad. More than talented enough for Prem football, and he actually cared about winning and losing. We could have done with him snarling and shouting at some of our under performing players over the last 18months, rather than the rest of the team just accepting lacklustre performances.

An odd topic today, Ashley hasn’t got too much abuse on here this morning so not sure the relevance of posting about something that happened a long time ago, and saw Barton proved right as players left with inadequate replacements bought in (or not given 18months without a signing).

Burnley were on tv last night. There has been talk by some of the fans of playing in the Championship and that we won’t have the experienced English type professional to make it a short stay. Maybe you don’t come across the fans that saw Barton as someone to aid the Ashley out cause. I used to watch a lot more football home and away than I can now. The toon army used to sing a Joey song and he does his own PR. Lot of press and media coverage of late because he’s having a great season at Burnley. He himself has said he can still do a job in the Premiership.
We will have to disagree on Cabaye. He has been outstanding for Palace and was a delight with his range of passing. We should have paid £12 m to bring him back.
The summer we bought Cabaye was memorable because we got our transfers in early not in keeping with our modus operandi. Nolan and Barton departed and we had a settled squad on the first day of pre-season.. No dithering and I was pointing out that we don’t always panic and pay over the odds for players as other options evaporate.
As well as Cabaye, Ba and Marveaux came in .So we addressed what was seen as our needs.
I was I thought giving a balanced account of the club hierarchy with a view to at some point making the claim that Ashley is providing the financial means to improve the squad. There is no reason why you should read my material but I have been arguing for some time that we need an overhaul of personnel at the academy , Scouting and programme going forward. We need to be proactive as fans.
