Newcastle Now Linked With English Full-Back

7:19 pm, Tuesday, January 26th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 143 Comments

Dutch publication De Gelderlander is reporting today that Premier club Newcastle United are interested in signing Chelsea’s 22 year-old full-back Todd Kane, who is currently on loan at NEC Nijmegen playing in the Dutch Eredivisie.

Todd has been playing extremely well on loan which is why he is attracting so much attention from  clubs other than Newcastle, with Southampton and Dutch clubs Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord all interested in signing the player in the summer.

todd kane on loan at Nottingham Forest

Todd Kane while on loan at Nottingham Forest last year

While Todd usually plays at right back he can also play on the other side, which is why we assume Newcastle are interested in him, although he is right-footed.

Shades of Davide Santon.

Kane joined Chelsea when he was just 8 years old and came through their Youth Academy and was in the team that won the 2011–2012 FA Youth Cup, beating Blackburn Rovers 4-1 on aggregate in the final.

Speaking about his future plans Kane has hinted he may want to stay at Chelsea:

“Chelsea say that I prepare normally for the new season in the first-team. I grew up in Chelsea and would like to break through there. That there are so many options is nice.”

“The Netherlands is beautiful, but the Premier League is a bigger competition. The point is then what are my prospects, and what Chelsea want. The summer is very important.”

Todd has played most of his games on loan and has never played in the Chelsea first team.

His loan spells have been at Preston North End, Blackburn Rovers, Bristol City, Nottingham Forest and he’s now at NEC Nijmegen.

Kane has played 84 times on loan with three goals.

With Newcastle about to sign Andros Townsend from Tottenham tomorrow, we badly need a striker with the two major possibilities seeming to be Saido Berahino from West Brom or Loic Remy on loan from Chelsea.

It would be good to get a defender in to shore up our defense which has been weak for at least three years – but it looks like Newcastle are more interested in Todd as a potential summer signing.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Ashley has thrown 60 million into your titanic club and were has it got you? If Sunderland had that money to spend we would be top 8 club

  • 5 lesh // Jan 26, 2016 at 7:30 PM

Well, there’s one thing for sure – Ashley can’t be accused of not freeing up the cash for this season’s spending.

The fact that we didn’t get a CB and LB in during the summer’s down to Charnley and his fellow so-called board members – in particular Carr.
McClaren has to be applauded for getting a change of approach by buying Prem-experienced English players. He can’t surely be implicated in the summer purchase of Mitro or the lack of much-needed defenders as he wasn’t around when Carr and Charnley held sway.

McClaren really has his job cut out shaping our players into a winning team and like it or not, he did inherit some poor players. Maybe Carver was right on that score.

However, it’s important we get points on the board starting with the next match.

    Fingers crossed.

No no no no. Sign a left footed left back ffs. None of this right footed but prefers the left, or can play left bollox. It hardly ever works. I can only think of Lahm who was a success playing on the “wrong” side.

Not sure what it is mate, it has all the hallmarks of a Makem, can’t spell, thinks punctuation is that happens when he stabs a car tyre, and is defiantly an unscrupulous type.

Evening YCMIU – I’ve just come on the Blog so you may have commented earlier but what do you think of Townsend? I personally think he is an excellent signing and a new club should hopefully rekindle his career.

  • 16 Thump // Jan 26, 2016 at 7:39 PM

@BlacknWhiteBarmy: I think it’s reference to a joke from when we were in the Championship. Think it was daffy (or maybe the other mackem who used to visit here – no, not toonbrother) who kept typing “SUFC”.

There again, I may be giving far too much credit.

  • 17 Jail for Ashley // Jan 26, 2016 at 7:40 PM

Ashley has thrown 60 million into your titanic club

    TITANIC definition
    t???tan?k/
    adjective
    adjective: titanic

of exceptional strength, size, or power.
    “a series of titanic explosions”
synonyms: colossal, gigantic, monumental, massive, enormous, terrific, tremendous, fantastic, towering, immense, vast, cosmic, giant, mammoth, elephantine, gargantuan, prodigious, huge, very large, great, substantial, mighty, Herculean,

  • 41 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jan 26, 2016 at 8:20 PM

    Hazzy

Just to jump in. Your definition of failure is WAY to simplistic as regards to football. An easy example is Leicester. Say they are pipped to the title by arsenal or man city, and finish 2nd or 3rd. They have acheived champions league football 2 years after being promoted. Hardly failure.

    hazzy,
Not sure where this is going but that season we finished fifth we didn’t win anything but it was a huge success, despite the mostly poor football it made everyone feel proud. If Mikey enjoyed success in all forms why did he believe we’d over achieved and set out to make sure it didn’t happen again.

hazzy..Hi there, just noticed a post of yours from the previous thread.

“In 2014 Sports Direct confirmed they made 3.4 million from Newcastle United advertisements. Can be found in the journal”

I’ve had a look and can’t find it. I did find this though, is that what you meant?

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/11563435/How-fair-does-Sports-Direct-play.html

“Indeed, Newcastle United contributed £3.4m in revenue to Sports Direct last year, according to the retailer’s annual report. And Rangers Football club, in which Ashley has a 9pc stake, is also a contributor to Sports Direct’s revenues, handing over £3.8m last year. ”

    The club said this:

“For the purpose of clarity, we can reconfirm that 100 per cent of the income from goods bought in the Club’s official stores and on its website are received by the Club and not Sports Direct, as the ‘Dispatches’ programme claimed.

The only money paid by the Club to Sports Direct is for the stock (at cost price), plus a handling fee. This represents far better value than the costs the Club historically incurred in relation to purchasing, storage and distribution.”

So, where has anyone said anything about what SD makes from NUFC for advertisement, like you said?

  • 53 martoon // Jan 26, 2016 at 8:47 PM

  • 56 check the toastie // Jan 26, 2016 at 8:55 PM

for those who have already wrote Townsend off (ignorant noobs), he appeared 39 times last season scoring 8 times a few assists.

He was key to a hard working good footballing Poccettino side, he at times kept Lamela, Erickson, Chad,i or Dembele from the starting line up, he took the sides penalties at times and was a breath of fresh air for England.

He started Spurs biggest game of the year at Wembley in the league cup final and starred for spurs in walloping of Arsenal and Chelsea.

Pocchettino clearly rated him and that’s a huge plus.

He has only been in the cold for three Months has his best days ahead of him, may have an attitude if not selected to play, but most ambitious players do.

This time last year he wasn’t for sale at 20million, its good business and he’s a massive step up for our lopsided team, (everything goes thru an inconsistent Sissoko).

Another step in the right direction.

    Get behind the lad ffs…

According to Tuesday’s print edition of Italian newspaper Calcio Mercato, Newcastle United have joined the race to sign Lazio midfielder Eddy Onazi.

The claim was later printed online by Football Italia, and it suggests the Serie A side are willing to cash in on the 23-year-old this month despite the fact he has a contract that runs until the summer of 2018.

Onazi is a central midfielder who can operate either in a holding role or further forward, and Newcastle fans would be forgiven for wondering why the Magpies would want another such player when they recently signed Henri Saivet and Jonjo Shelvey.

For that reason alone the report needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. However there is no doubt Newcastle need to significantly strengthen as they bid to avoid relegation this season.
    Another midfielder ???????

Quoted in the Italian media 3 hours ago

“Stavo parlando con il mio amico Davide Santon
    dicendogli Voglio una ragazza Geordie
    e ha suggerito la Toon”

  • 97 lesh // Jan 26, 2016 at 10:44 PM

    Adewakey

Yes we got Mbemba but we also kept Colo who really should’ve been replaced. Lascelles has shown he’s not up to the Prem.

  • 104 p // Jan 26, 2016 at 10:49 PM

I am a big Loic Remy fan but with his injury record, we are putting a lot of eggs in one basket. I am a bit worried he is only incentive is to get in the France squad if it is only a loan deal, hopefully that would be enough. He’s a good player though.

Remy and another like Berahino would be lovely.

Nah I’m no great judge of players but as far as Lascelles’s concerned, many have said he’s not ready to the Prem yet – especially in the tricky situation we’re in now.

The quote you’ve mentioned was the one I found just in the Journal Ibiza. I may have misunderstood that as I’m by no means a financial expert but if they have made 3.4 million from Newcastle I took that as from all sources. I was just attempting to find out how much Sports Direct made from the Toon. My point is that I completely disagree with the idea that Mike Ashley makes any meaningful income from Newcastle and that his motives for doing anything lie elsewhere and anyone hoping we get relegated to spite him are ridiculous.
I don’t deny that I enjoyed Newcastle finishing 5th as much as anyone but if you enter a competition and don’t win then you have lost.
