It’s Official – Andros Townsend Signs For Newcastle

6:17 pm, Wednesday, January 27th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 41 Comments

Andros Townsend has passed his medical and signed on for Newcastle United and he becomes the third signing this month for Newcastle and we hope there are still more to come including a striker.

Andros Townsend – Newcastle finally got their man

Here’s what has just gone out on the Newcastle website about our new signing.

Newcastle United have completed the signing of England international winger Andros Townsend from Tottenham Hotspur.

The 24-year-old arrives at St. James’ Park for an undisclosed fee and has signed a five-and-a-half-year deal with the Magpies. He will wear the number 25 shirt.

Townsend made 93 senior appearances in all competitions for Spurs after joining the club’s Academy aged eight.

He has also represented England at youth and senior level, earning ten full international caps and scoring on three occasions under current boss Roy Hodgson.

“I’m delighted to be here.” “Newcastle United is a fantastic club with great fans, a great stadium and great tradition.

“As soon as I heard Newcastle were interested in me, there was only one place I wanted to go – so I can’t wait to get started.”

Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren said:

“Bringing Andros to the Club is a great signing. “He is a very good talent who is a current England international and should be one for years to come, too.

“Andros is a winger with an old-fashioned style. He can play on the right or the left, is two-footed, quick, very direct and loves taking on defenders and crossing the ball.

“He feels he has a lot to prove and I can’t wait to see him do that in a Newcastle shirt.”

This is potentially a great signing for us as the England International can both score and create goals and gives us some speed and some old fashioned wing play out wide on either side.

We warmly welcome Andros Townsend to Newcastle United Football Club.

Comments welcome.

I really hope he improves us but I just can’t get past the fee and the wages. 40k is ridiculous but rumours of 80k?? If true the lads had lee charmless’s pass down!

  • 2 GeordieTwo // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:23 PM

He had better be bloody good for us if it’s 80K per week. That’s more than our high earner Colo gets. A change in wage strategy underway here?

  • 3 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:24 PM

no way he’ll be on 80k pw

Betty…it’s not like you bring alot new to the table with Remy and Berahino is it? Maybe you could do that instead of taking a pi$$ at my suggestion?

  • 11 toon kk // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:29 PM

    What’s the latest on Tiote?

  • 12 Fostino // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:30 PM

Townsand officially confirmed. Don’t care the cost. An exciting signing. Great to get it done so we can concentrate on striker.

Questions need to be asked about the signing of cabella. .thauvin..riverie by Carr. .These are big money flops. Seems like the new philosophy to yo sign English.

Credit to Ashley. That’s 2 windows now where we are top of the spending list.

Shame on rolando..maybe he could establish himself as a l.b. A position thst needs filling

  • 13 Fostino // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:32 PM

We are 2nd last. In fairness we are doing well to be attracting these players. Never mind the wages.

I think these lads must be hearing good things when signing such as..we are hoping to bring in more top players along with you

  • 14 SPRINGY // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:33 PM

    toon kk
have’nt heard anything since they were thinking about looking at other players….still in talks i think

  • 15 reilly // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:34 PM

who cares how much hes on,not your money, who gives a fk.

  • 16 SPRINGY // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:34 PM

ramirez has just signed for a chinese side is that the club tiote was going to?….maybe they have knocked the deal on the head if it is the same side.

  • 17 dannitoon // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:36 PM

I’m glad we’ve signed a young English international who knows he has a point to prove and not a cheap European who uses us as a stepping stone… now for Berahino and remy.. ????

  • 18 will die for the toon army // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:36 PM

Am happy with townsend was always scared of him wen we played Spurs.

    NOW bring on Remy.

  • 20 BandB // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:36 PM

Five goals in 62 Premier League appearances since 2008.

Perez has five this season alone, including in important away wins at Bournemouth and Spurs, without which we’d be as good as down already.

    Sissoko has none.

So why do we bloggers think we’ve just improved our front line?

  • 21 bettyswallocks // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:36 PM

Jesper….. I don’t think we have a better option than Remy at this late stage unless we shell out for Berahino. Aubamayang would be beyond our wildest and not even on the radar , that’s why when you said Remy isn’t the answer I thought you had a better suggestion.

  • 22 will die for the toon army // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:37 PM

I think Toite’s deal is off. Chronicle said

  • 23 toon kk // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:38 PM

Yep credit to Ash for opening his wallet, he’s probably only spent because he has to.
It’s just a shame millions have been wasted on Thauvin and Cabella that money could have been used to buy Berahino.

  • 24 will die for the toon army // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:42 PM

    2 goals 1 cup

  • 25 optimistic prime // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:43 PM

Ashley has 8yrs of poor windows to make up for, 2 isn’t even a scratch on the surface. I’ll consider giving him credit in 5years if he continues to invest like this window and last.

  • 26 Jib // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:43 PM

Jesper come up with something NEW or ORIGINAL !!
    Are you for real ?

  • 27 GeordieTwo // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:44 PM

My pointy stick is close at hand Springy. No more mention of new contracts for Saylor! Harrumph…..

  • 28 Fostino // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:45 PM

The club trying to buy tiote just confirmed the signing of freddy guarantee from inter so that’s prob knocked thst deal on the head. Rammires gone to a dif Chinese club. Sounds like the club tiote was moving to but only spelt backwards ha

  • 29 Reyantoon // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:45 PM

Sutty stop banging your head in to the wall.I can see you from here 🙂

  • 30 GeordieTwo // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:45 PM

Whatever he’s being paid there is huge pressure on Townsend to perform well now. His first chance comes away from home against Everton. I wish him well. We have to support the new players all the way to the end of the season. This is a critical time. We desperately need points. Nobody is going to lie down for us.

  • 31 welshgeordie9 // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:46 PM

Are you moaning already about Townsend.

  • 32 Munster Mag // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:47 PM

Not sure why all the negativity. Nitro will be pleased. Those who compare townsend to either the useless thauvin ( as i have said since the west ham and sheff game, he is awful) or obertan don’t have a notion. Ashley needs to examine carrs dealings and he needs to be banned from france

  • 33 BandB // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:48 PM

I just listed some facts Welsh.

You having a strop doesn’t make them wrong…… madam.

  • 34 Fostino // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:48 PM

    Freddy guarin

  • 35 Munster Mag // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:49 PM

And well done ashley. But what happens to these guys and the money spent if we go down. A serious worry

  • 36 JP...from The Rock // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:49 PM

Good to know we have a very fast player that seems to have more brains that Obertan. Hope he clicks instantly. I don’t see it as a shame for Aarons as we now have more depth in that position with both Rolando and Andros there. And both can play in both wings I believe. So happy days. Now just get us a striker and a defender at a push. We need all the help we can get for them points to jump out of the bottom three and I can sleep better at night.

  • 37 GeordieTwo // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:49 PM

We’re third last Fostino mate. Bad enough. But only 2 points out of 17th! Huzzah!!!!

  • 38 2 goals 1 cup // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:51 PM

will die for the toon army i like that team kept the same formation and you have fitted perez in

  • 39 Munster Mag // Jan 27, 2016 at 6:53 PM

B and b, we have improved our team because neither perez nor sissoko are genuine wingers. This guy will add speed to a fairly slow team. He will allow us to stretch opponents and widen the pitch a bit. How often do we compare our slow team to watford and Leicester etc. This guy will help imo.

  • 40 Fostino // Jan 27, 2016 at 7:02 PM

    Jp from the rock

That’s a fair point regarding rolando. They could be lethal in with wings. like robben and duff fir Chelsea when Jose first arrived

    Just imagine next year

    Sissoko jonjo colback

    Rolando berahino townsand

    Exciting and nearly all english

  • 41 Moonraker15 // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:09 PM

Some of you guys going on about Townsend’s wages need to wake up! This is the richest league in the world and he’s an England international at his prime, as is Shelvey. We all know they’re overpaid but the money is there so get over it!
