Newcastle Want To Sign Championship Center-Back

9:10 pm, Wednesday, January 27th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 220 Comments

There’s news tonight that Newcastle want Leeds United club captain and center-back Sol Bamba, and the 44 times capped Ivory Coast International who was born in a suburb of Paris in France, has been told he can leave Leeds United  this month.

Sunderland are also said to be interested in signing the 6’3″ defender.

sol bamba

Sol Bamba – Leeds United center-back

The Daily Star is reporting that Newcastle are interested in signing the 31 year-old for about £2M and if the deal goes through it will be a huge change from Newcastle’s usual transfer policy of signing players who are 26 years old or younger.

Earlier in the week Leeds manager Steve Evans had this to say about his club captain on BBC Radio Leeds:

“As far as I am concerned, Sol Bamba is not going anywhere,” “He is part of what we are trying to do, and we need competition.”

Bamba has lost his place in the side under current manager Steve Evans to Liam Cooper and Giuseppe Bellusci, after he was brought in by former manager Uwe Rosler, so exactly how he can help Newcastle a huge step up in the Premier League is hard to understand.

Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino has agreed to allow Bamba to leave Leeds, where he’s been since January of last year when he arrived on loan from Italian club Palermo and signed permanently last June.

Championship club Wolves are also interested in signing the defender but it looks like they will turn to Newcastle’s Mike Williamson instead and a move is said to be imminent.

If we are trying to sign some a back-up defender for the rest of the season why not just keep Williamson at the club until his contract runs out in June and he will leave Newcastle?

Mike after all has vast experience in the Premier League with 134 appearances for Newcastle in England’s top league.

Bamba has played for seven different clubs so far – PSG, Dunfermline and Hibernian in Scotland, Leicester City, Trabzonspor in Turkey, Palermo in Italy and now Leeds United.

In his career he has made a total of 249 appearances with 10 goals and he turned 31 earlier this month.

If we do sign Bamba it will be a strange signing.

Comments welcome.

According to Eurosport, defender Gary Cahill is hoping to leave Chelsea this month; whilst The Guardian report that Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend has completed a £12million move to Newcastle United.

The 30-year-old defender has been issued just eleven Premier League starts this season and only one since Guus Hiddink’s appointment last month, with the Blues’ interim manager preferring John Terry and Kurt Zouma as his centre-back partnership.

According to Eurosport, who cite Reuters, the former Bolton man is keen to leave the club before the end of the January transfer window amid fears his place in the England squad for next summer’s European Championships has come under threat due to a lack of game-time.

Roy Hodgson does have a number of alternative centre-backs at his disposal, including Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Phil Jagielka, John Stones and Ryan Shawcross. According to The Daily Mail, however, Chelsea won’t let their five-year servant leave unless they receive an ‘unbelievable’ offer

Is Bambara taller than Mike ?
    One in one out
Sky sources understand Newcastle defender Mike Williamson has agreed to join Wolves on an 18-month deal. He will travel to Molineux ahead of a medical tomorrow, and also had interest from Sheffield Wednesday.

The fee is believed to be worth £250,000.

    Ha big Sol Bamba !

Used to play up in Scotland and was pretty terrible so no thanks !!

Wish the club would really push the boat out and show some ambition and try for Cahill I bet Chelsea would rather sell him to us than say Liverpool

We would get a good few seasons out of him and he would possibly speed up the development of Mbemba and Lascalles

He’s 31 & an inch shorter than Willo (height that is!) If Chelsea let Cahill go who is a year younger they will buy Stones from Everton. Cahill was on £80k pw in 2012 but he is a Northern lad born just outside Sheffield. Will know Jonjo & Townsend.
Better tried & tested Cahill than taking a punt on Championship untried untested in Prem IMO

    Good point LCBP
Wouldn’t say no to Kieran Gibbs & yet another England International. Arsenal wouldn’t want him to go to a “Big” Club.

Gibbs is worth enquiring about even as a loan if Arsene would agree so he gets decent playing time. Don’t think he would agree to sell anyway.

    does gibbs play left back???

  • 16 martoon // Jan 27, 2016 at 9:27 PM

B*ll*cks I was really hoping the semi-final would go to extra time – another 30 minutes in the Everton legs as well as a hard match at Carlisle on Sunday 🙂

  • 17 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 27, 2016 at 9:29 PM

If we could get Gibbs on loan with a view to signing in the summer that would be an excellent piece of business

Plenty of players like this currently available from the top teams because of the euros who need to get game time and play well

Imagine we got Gibbs , Cahill and Remy ? Just kidding!! ha ha

  • 18 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 27, 2016 at 9:30 PM

IMO Gary Cahill better bet than all the others presently being considered by Roy Hodgson althogh age is against him. He could do a great job for us & he is a leader.

    Has pinochio gone rustling?

  • 20 Our Toon // Jan 27, 2016 at 9:31 PM

Cahill…..really? Those calling for cahill were also calling for a taller defender not long ago, 6ft 3in plus to win the ball in the air.

Cahill is utter shite without a better defender next to him, no surprise Terry on the decline couldn’t carry him anymore and that a young strong and more powerful Zouma is preferred.

  • 21 jazzyp // Jan 27, 2016 at 9:32 PM

Gibbs at 26 is coming into his prime and we all know we crave for a recognised left back. I just don’t see Wenger letting him leave.

    Chancel

I would defo have the lad at Nufc so yes I rate him

  • 22 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 27, 2016 at 9:32 PM

Think your probably a dreamer LCBP but nevertheless those three may be the answer to all our nightmares.

  • 23 geordie157 // Jan 27, 2016 at 9:32 PM

    Gibbs, Cahill and Remy

Never going to happen but those three would add real quality and experience to the side.

Oooh stuff it….shock the league and get John Stones

  • 24 SUTTY1978 // Jan 27, 2016 at 9:34 PM

De Bruyne cant half whip a ball in, would love us to have someone with his talent in our team, utter class… And as I write that he’s crocked!

  • 25 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 27, 2016 at 9:35 PM

If the club really were ambitious then those 3 players would make a hell of a difference !

I think we will get Remy on loan but cant see us signing anyone else at all after that

yes he’s older than usual but a huge huge improvement and the right type of role model for our young cb’s to learn off as i really dont like to think of them learning off colo all that much >.<

  • 38 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 27, 2016 at 9:47 PM

You have Our Toon haven’t you? You’ve been on Wiki & changed it. 1.88 metres is 74.01575 inches (just over 6’2″in old money) How the hell can you loose an inch in height at 30?

  • 39 Our Toon // Jan 27, 2016 at 9:50 PM

    West Lancs

Ahahaha, I wish I had the time to change it. I just never trust wiki as a reliable source

Cahill has more than a mistake in him in every game, we need a strong CB who won’t get bullied or brushed off the ball or outbattled.

  • 40 SPRINGY // Jan 27, 2016 at 9:50 PM

cahill like this bloke bamba are in there 30’s so doubt they’ll happen

  • 41 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 27, 2016 at 9:51 PM

Well he’s an England International Centre Half Does it really matter whether he’s 1.93 M or 1.88 M or what. Mbembe can be his minder. I’d have him here tomorrow. He’s far better than the alternatives & this lad Bamba can’t even get in the Leeds side so we’ll probably by him if the Townsend theory is anything to go by.

    Left back
    – Gibbs is not a bad shout but arsenal won’t let him go with their title run in
    – Galloway at Everton would be a awesome steal, 3rd choice but is class

    Centre back
    – Matip, but looks like liverpool will get him
    – Reid at West Ham, quality player
    – Cahill, better than what we got

    Striker
    – Remy, but needs match fitness
    – Rhodes is a finisher and another Austin
    – Beharinho would add pace in behind
    – lacazette non starter and unproven over here like thauvin and Cabella
    – Hernandez would be a dream

Think the spending is not over, got to be happy with the window so far! More than we could of dreamed off

  • 54 Marty-Toon // Jan 27, 2016 at 10:01 PM

Some good signings this season,a lot of Money shelled out especially for Thauvin and i was expecting him to be a good buy but he hasn`t settled.
Townsend should be good signing if we can get him fit and keep him fit.
Think Ayoze and Mitro should be playing more together and that Ayoze should be up front and not out on the wing.
Then hey`d get us the goals.

  • 55 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 27, 2016 at 10:01 PM

Indeed healthy discussions and debate without the name calling stuff etc. Everyone’s opinion is valid.

On Perez I like him but think he tries doing to much, instead of keeping it simple he’s forever head down running into a cul-de-sac. He also needs to learn when to pass the ball as often he gets dispossessed. He grafts though and has talent

Cahill won’t come here and we can’t afford his wages. Remy is a crock who’s massively short on game time and more importantly he looks well off the pace, he will add nothing and Gomis is an underwhelming option.

Litrally scraping the bottom of the barrel with these 3

If Cashley is considering pushing the boat out for a striker. Why don’t we offer big money for Ighalo or Deeney say or are Watford a bigger club than NUFC?After all they aren’t going to go down this season. Bid £30M for the 29 year old Vardy . For a player that age he can’t be worth any more. Or are Leicester a bigger club than NUFC?Can see Man U going for Vardy

We’ve never addressed the defence problem & that’s the main reason why we have never won NOWT for all those years.
We’ve got an old age pensioner of six years standing pulling the strings – Graham Carr. Who should have been pensioned off at 65. Here are the teams he’s managed :
    Dartford
    1977–1978 Weymouth
    1978– ? Dartford
    1981–1985 Nuneaton Borough
    1985–1990 Northampton Town
    1990 Blackpool
    1991 Maidstone United
    1992–1995 Kettering Town
    1995 Weymouth
    1995–1996 Dagenham & Redbridge
and the standard he played at was no better – all non league apart from Northampton & York.
Is it any wonder we can’t getter a better understanding of what we need and require. AND where did he come to us from Spurs!!

I don’t think a fee dictates how good a player is so if you think I’m waiting for 30m player then you either are knew to the blog or just make it up as you go. Fernando Torres cost chelsea 50m Carroll cost Liverpool 35m. Spending big money doesn’t guarantee success or mean you’ve signed a world beater.

I’d rather not sign a forward if the 2 options are remy (will take at least 6 games to get up to speed) and Gomis (dud)

We need a pacey forward if one is on the market, if not stick to what we have and build from the back with a strong defence.

Look Our Toon I’m not having a dig at you despite you having a go at me. I really respect your opinions and no big money doesn’t always give you success Albert Luque was a good example of that. I ‘ve never said Gomis or Remy are the answers but they have scored goals in the Prem. Chelsea & Swans wouldn’t be getting shut if they were that good.I think you’ve hit the nail on the head that we need a pacy forward – if there is one on the market. There probably isn’t so we have to look elsewhere. Can I suggest Tom Ince having a good season with Derby who Macca will know. He has pace skill, can cross a ball & score goals and he is English. He wouldn’t cost the earth and would give us another dimension but is not an out & out goalscorer. I really hope we are going to strengthen our bare bones defence. If all else fails I’d try to bring in Peter Crouch as a quick fix to try & stop up.Laugh if you will but I don’t think at this stage in the window there is anything better

Good evening fellas – yet another day closer to the end of the transfer window and it’s last chance saloon for us.

Where is the Gibbs talk coming from – has he said he wants to leave Arsenal?

I think we should go all out to sign Gary Cahill and either Kevin Gameiro or Moussa Sow – both established goalscorers and of the pacy mould. Gameiro is bit younger 28 so 1st option. This is all on the assumption that we have zero chance of Lacazette.

Cahill to slot in next to Mbemba and a goalscorer and we genuinely then have a strong starting eleven

Not having a go mate, just don’t think it makes sense going for 2 players who loom utter dross and will take longer to integrate. Let’s not forget it was around this time we bought cisse with no prem experience and he scored 13 in 14 games. Bedtner has goals in the prem doesn’t mean he’ll be a good fit. It all smacks of desperation in the need to bring anyone in for the sake of bringing them in. If anyone saw remy at the weekend they’d know it’ll take him a long time to get back up to speed and time isn’t a luxury we have. Hence why I’d rather stick to what we do have. We haven’t tried cisse and mitro as a pair amd that could work….1 a decent fisher and the other with strength and good aerial ability who can bring players into play.

Ince is a good shout and I would have gone for him if we didn’t get Townsend

I’m reading Spurs fans are pleased with Daniel Levy.

I’m reading Townsend is delighted with his move to Newcastle.

    What’s missing?

  • 186 Premiership Manager // Jan 28, 2016 at 1:58 AM

It’s simple put Wijnaldum up front and play Perez in the hole, CF problems solved and leave Mitro on the bench.

CB we have Lascelles coming through but with Collo getting on Cayhill would be an ideal replacement as he has vice captain experience and would lead from the back organizing the defense however we do need a LB.

    SAV

    Whats missing???????

Levy got a 12 million profit, Townsend tripled his wages and we quite possibly got royally humped again.

  • 190 Reyantoon // Jan 28, 2016 at 4:44 AM

Sutty – you still moaning without evidence. You haven’t provided better alternatives.
You are talking about championship players or players that came from championship.Stats doesn’t always tell you everything about a particular player.I wanna know ur suggestions.

    Mornings…

Can anyone explain to me where these sad individuals like Betty Boop come from. Always someone new wanting to be the Alpha dog on here trying to get the approval of the other dogs.

I swear it’s like a scene from ‘one flew over the cuckoo’s nest’ in here at times!

Yes Belfast you are definitely to blame…alone by association!

  • 193 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 28, 2016 at 5:48 AM

Belfast you seem to have sort of connection to most of them!

  • 194 Reyantoon // Jan 28, 2016 at 5:58 AM

Ha ha ha Jesper @191 , I hate to get involved but I do read your exchanges.I haven’t seen any relevant in his arguments or pops towards you.I find it utter non sense.I voted for u on this one 🙂

  • 195 Ian Toon // Jan 28, 2016 at 6:06 AM

Jesper- It’s sad that you’ve fallen for Mr Tuff’s guff and all the multiple nonsense. I have read your altercation with Carl- egged on by Mr Tuff. Maybe it is simply a case of someone else looking to take the wind out of your sails, but it’s not me. You would be well advised to think things through before overreacting. Don’t mention my name.
However I take seriously your reference to “Ian ‘s family”. Simply because not everybody will see it as you possibly intended. Can you please not reference my family- just stop. It’s wholly inappropriate .

  • 196 Ian Toon // Jan 28, 2016 at 6:07 AM

Belfast – Good morning. Like the Leeds CB would be a good signing. Just the sort of no nonsense CB were lacking.

  • 197 Ian Toon // Jan 28, 2016 at 6:15 AM

Jesper @192 – Maybe the. Connection Belfast has is because he’s not as gullible as you and judges people as he finds them. Just a thought.

  • 198 SUTTY1978 // Jan 28, 2016 at 6:20 AM

Reyan, I wanted El Ghazi in from Ajax, available for about £8 mill apparently.
Townsend is the kind of player we have been laughing at other clubs overpaying for during the last few years.
I back most of the signings we make but theres just some you can tell will flop. From the last two windows the only ones i have been dead against are Townsend and Thauvin because they were both players who have already had their 15 minutes of form at a young age and on their way down.

  • 201 nut meg // Jan 28, 2016 at 6:41 AM

    Sutty
Have you seen El Ghazy in live matches? He’s a player I’ve watched many times on the videos and he looks a real talent, goals, assists, chances, a very creative player who I hope we have been scouting.

  • 202 Ian Toon // Jan 28, 2016 at 6:52 AM

There is a look of scouting at present of the lower leagues following recent rich pickings. It seems we’re getting our act together. I see were reportedly looking at Rico Henry, an 18-year-old left back at Walsall. Having missed out on Sam Byram who went form Leeds to West Ham and had a very good debut.
Newcastle also looking at Kemar Roofe, the Oxford United midfielder and Conor Chaplin, the 18-year-old forward at Portsmouth.
Apparently our scouts are noticeable because they wear club track suits.
    It pays to advertise!

  • 203 Reyantoon // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:06 AM

Sutty – u have been missing the point. That lad has never been scouted extensively. So what makes you think Carr and Charnley will sign a player who hasn’t been on their radar?
Townsend may not be playing regularly for different reasons. That doesn’t make him a bad player. When he starts to play every week here,
he’ll find his form.Otherwise the board would not have invested heavily on him.You got mislead by irrelevant stats!

  • 204 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:13 AM

    Ian,
We also scouted Delle Alli, Joe Gomez and a host of others over the last few years. We need to actually make a move for some of them if it is to be worthwhile. Roofe was apparently outstanding against Spurs in the FA Cup, and has been having an excellent season. If we are interested, then why not make a move and loan him back for the remainder, as Spurs did with Alli?

I haven’t seen Roofe play, so I can’t personally comment, but the club need to be more pro active at times. We were linked with Gomez for £2million last Jan, but didn’t bid. He ended up at Liverpool in the summer for £3.5million and looked excellent until picking up a serious injury. Alli we were linked with for a full 18months before Spurs stepped in.

  • 205 geordie157 // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:15 AM

Remy we need now with an option to buy. Although gunter for a few mill might ensure we have decent rb/ lb cover. Or the better option of de sciglio

In the summer cahill, willems or gibbs and maybe tielemans or lewis cook.

Out goes Taylor, marveaux, obertan, vuckic on frees. Followed by cisse and gouffran.

We’d finally have a strong team and decent depth.

  • 206 Ian Toon // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:17 AM

I have never rated Martinez as a manager and see him as being grossly hyped and overrated. He’s just not able to manage defenders which is what took Wigan down. Everton have probably the best group of young players in the PL and they attack very well. Their season to date has been one of throwing away good opportunities like last night. But Martinez got the balance between attack and defence completely wrong. He’s also damaging John Stones by playing him out of position at a time when he’s had a dip in form. Pochettino would have rested him rather than have to sub him as Martinez did,
They’ve got Barkley, Lukaku and Stones. But to illustrate the defence or lack of point they have conceded 22 goals at home the worst in the division. Hope Macca has got a game plan because let’s with our newly acquired pace look to exploit very obvious weaknesses.

  • 207 SUTTY1978 // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:18 AM

    Reyan,

Thats an irrelevance, am I only allowed to suggest players we have scouted? If he hasn’t been scouting him, he should be sacked, it’s not like Holland is a country we dont scout in and its not like our whole modus operandi isnt getting young players who may increase in value. If he has extensively scouted players like Thauvin & Townsend then he should know as well as I do that they are shite!

  • 208 SUTTY1978 // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:19 AM

Nutmeg, yes seen him a few times, as you say he’s exactly what we should be looking for in a winger, goals & assists. Top quality and years ahead of him to improve.

  • 209 Ian Toon // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:21 AM

Lilongwe- Maddison is still available at Coventry. Spurs are said to be haggling over a £5 million fee but he’s supposed to be the next best thing off the rank. Armstrong has reported back on him and we’ve watched him a few times. Just a case of getting our act together.

  • 210 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:25 AM

    Ian,
Yeah, there is Maddison available as well. There are very little reports saying we are even interested though, despite having watched him (supposedly) and Arma having allegedly recommended him. It is probably just as, if not more likely our scouts watch Coventry games to check up on Arma.

Still, as I said in previous, if we don’t pull our finger out and actually act on occasions where they do show real promise. If it is between us and Spurs, then we are likely to come off second best.

  • 211 welshgeordie9 // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:26 AM

    Shut up expat.

  • 212 Ian Toon // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:29 AM

Lilongwe- It was Swansea knocked out of cup. Only watched on tv but I like Dembele at Fulham. A couple of signings a window in this market would be worth a relatively small investment given our failures in the French market of late.

  • 213 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:30 AM

On Martinez, he has always been a manager that looks for style over substance. His initial success was based on his style and the substance left behind by Moyes. The fact Everton are currently in 12th with the talent that is evident in the squad shows how poor tactically he really is.

I read he had a few games to save his job, I’d be very happy if we gave him a further nudge towards the exit next week.

  • 214 Ian Toon // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:31 AM

Lilongwe- we’ve got to be looking for a Chief Scout ! When is your contract up?
    Enjoy your day.

  • 215 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:31 AM

He also loves a good whinge at anything that doesn’t go his way, whilst defending the indefensible if it is done by one of his players. Mcmanaman for instance…

” Thats an irrelevance, am I only allowed to suggest players we have scouted? If he hasn’t been scouting him, he should be sacked,..”

Aha ha ha ha, now you made me laugh. We just have to wait and see I guess but not sure your argument has any relevance there!

  • 217 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:38 AM

    Ian,
I think too much reliance is put on the chief scout. The whole team of scouts are important when it comes to finding players. Carr isn’t going to be watching lower leagues, unless a player is highly recommended by someone from within or from outside of his team. Most of Carr’s scouting trips will likely be watching players that are highly rated by other scouts before he runs the rule over them for a period.

Still, Carr has too much power for a chief scout. He shouldn’t be part of the board, and he should be reporting to someone on the board (not McClaren, who shouldn’t be on the board). There needs to be a third football person involved with our transfer discussions and scouting operations. A proper DoF if you will, or even a Technical Director. Doesn’t matter on the title, but they need to know youth development, talent ID, coaching and tactics.

  • 218 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:40 AM

    Ian,
You are right on Swansea. Dembele looks decent, I’d have preferred us to get Patrick Roberts from them last summer before City pinched him.

  • 219 Lilongwe Geordie // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:42 AM

    Reyan,
    You say;
“When he starts to play every week here, he’ll find his form. Otherwise the board would not have invested heavily on him.”

Do the board only invest heavily on players that are guaranteed to come good? I must have imagined a number of our signing over the last few years then….

  • 220 firebug666 // Jan 28, 2016 at 7:49 AM

    Lilongwe

I think that although we do go out and scout players, most of our targets are found using that new software Wyscout that was installed during Pardew’s time.

This maybe why we seem to make so many mistakes when scouting for talent these days. Pardew said that the system gives them up to the minute information on any player in the world.

Having selected the targets they may then send a scout to have a look, or maybe they just have the scouts go out to approach the club who knows.

But from what Pardew said, Wyscout is used heavily in recruiting players.

I agree we should have changes to the board mind, and we need a DoF.
