Newcastle Want To Sign Championship Center-Back

There’s news tonight that Newcastle want Leeds United club captain and center-back Sol Bamba, and the 44 times capped Ivory Coast International who was born in a suburb of Paris in France, has been told he can leave Leeds United  this month.

Sunderland are also said to be interested in signing the 6’3″ defender.

Sol Bamba – Leeds United center-back

The Daily Star is reporting that Newcastle are interested in signing the 31 year-old for about £2M and if the deal goes through it will be a huge change from Newcastle’s usual transfer policy of signing players who are 26 years old or younger.

Earlier in the week Leeds manager Steve Evans had this to say about his club captain on BBC Radio Leeds:

“As far as I am concerned, Sol Bamba is not going anywhere,” “He is part of what we are trying to do, and we need competition.”

Bamba has lost his place in the side under current manager Steve Evans to Liam Cooper and Giuseppe Bellusci, after he was brought in by former manager Uwe Rosler, so exactly how he can help Newcastle a huge step up in the Premier League is hard to understand.

Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino has agreed to allow Bamba to leave Leeds, where he’s been since January of last year when he arrived on loan from Italian club Palermo and signed permanently last June.

Championship club Wolves are also interested in signing the defender but it looks like they will turn to Newcastle’s Mike Williamson instead and a move is said to be imminent.

If we are trying to sign some a back-up defender for the rest of the season why not just keep Williamson at the club until his contract runs out in June and he will leave Newcastle?

Mike after all has vast experience in the Premier League with 134 appearances for Newcastle in England’s top league.

Bamba has played for seven different clubs so far – PSG, Dunfermline and Hibernian in Scotland, Leicester City, Trabzonspor in Turkey, Palermo in Italy and now Leeds United.

In his career he has made a total of 249 appearances with 10 goals and he turned 31 earlier this month.

If we do sign Bamba it will be a strange signing.

According to Eurosport, defender Gary Cahill is hoping to leave Chelsea this month; whilst The Guardian report that Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend has completed a £12million move to Newcastle United.

The 30-year-old defender has been issued just eleven Premier League starts this season and only one since Guus Hiddink’s appointment last month, with the Blues’ interim manager preferring John Terry and Kurt Zouma as his centre-back partnership.

According to Eurosport, who cite Reuters, the former Bolton man is keen to leave the club before the end of the January transfer window amid fears his place in the England squad for next summer’s European Championships has come under threat due to a lack of game-time.

Roy Hodgson does have a number of alternative centre-backs at his disposal, including Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Phil Jagielka, John Stones and Ryan Shawcross. According to The Daily Mail, however, Chelsea won’t let their five-year servant leave unless they receive an ‘unbelievable’ offer

Sky sources understand Newcastle defender Mike Williamson has agreed to join Wolves on an 18-month deal. He will travel to Molineux ahead of a medical tomorrow, and also had interest from Sheffield Wednesday.

The fee is believed to be worth £250,000.

    Ha big Sol Bamba !

Used to play up in Scotland and was pretty terrible so no thanks !!

Wish the club would really push the boat out and show some ambition and try for Cahill I bet Chelsea would rather sell him to us than say Liverpool

We would get a good few seasons out of him and he would possibly speed up the development of Mbemba and Lascalles

He’s 31 & an inch shorter than Willo (height that is!) If Chelsea let Cahill go who is a year younger they will buy Stones from Everton. Cahill was on £80k pw in 2012 but he is a Northern lad born just outside Sheffield. Will know Jonjo & Townsend.
Better tried & tested Cahill than taking a punt on Championship untried untested in Prem IMO

    Good point LCBP
Wouldn’t say no to Kieran Gibbs & yet another England International. Arsenal wouldn’t want him to go to a “Big” Club.

Gibbs is worth enquiring about even as a loan if Arsene would agree so he gets decent playing time. Don’t think he would agree to sell anyway.

If we could get Gibbs on loan with a view to signing in the summer that would be an excellent piece of business

Plenty of players like this currently available from the top teams because of the euros who need to get game time and play well

Imagine we got Gibbs , Cahill and Remy ? Just kidding!! ha ha

Cahill…..really? Those calling for cahill were also calling for a taller defender not long ago, 6ft 3in plus to win the ball in the air.

Cahill is utter shite without a better defender next to him, no surprise Terry on the decline couldn’t carry him anymore and that a young strong and more powerful Zouma is preferred.

Ahahaha, I wish I had the time to change it. I just never trust wiki as a reliable source

Cahill has more than a mistake in him in every game, we need a strong CB who won’t get bullied or brushed off the ball or outbattled.
