There’s news tonight that Newcastle want Leeds United club captain and center-back Sol Bamba, and the 44 times capped Ivory Coast International who was born in a suburb of Paris in France, has been told he can leave Leeds United this month.
Sunderland are also said to be interested in signing the 6’3″ defender.
Sol Bamba – Leeds United center-back
The Daily Star is reporting that Newcastle are interested in signing the 31 year-old for about £2M and if the deal goes through it will be a huge change from Newcastle’s usual transfer policy of signing players who are 26 years old or younger.
Earlier in the week Leeds manager Steve Evans had this to say about his club captain on BBC Radio Leeds:
“As far as I am concerned, Sol Bamba is not going anywhere,” “He is part of what we are trying to do, and we need competition.”
Bamba has lost his place in the side under current manager Steve Evans to Liam Cooper and Giuseppe Bellusci, after he was brought in by former manager Uwe Rosler, so exactly how he can help Newcastle a huge step up in the Premier League is hard to understand.
Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino has agreed to allow Bamba to leave Leeds, where he’s been since January of last year when he arrived on loan from Italian club Palermo and signed permanently last June.
Championship club Wolves are also interested in signing the defender but it looks like they will turn to Newcastle’s Mike Williamson instead and a move is said to be imminent.
If we are trying to sign some a back-up defender for the rest of the season why not just keep Williamson at the club until his contract runs out in June and he will leave Newcastle?
Mike after all has vast experience in the Premier League with 134 appearances for Newcastle in England’s top league.
Bamba has played for seven different clubs so far – PSG, Dunfermline and Hibernian in Scotland, Leicester City, Trabzonspor in Turkey, Palermo in Italy and now Leeds United.
In his career he has made a total of 249 appearances with 10 goals and he turned 31 earlier this month.
If we do sign Bamba it will be a strange signing.
