Striker Options Running Out – Magpies Move For Ecuadorian

7:23 pm, Wednesday, January 27th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 163 Comments

Everton are said to be very keen to bring in 27 year-old Espanyol striker Felipe Caicedo this month, and he has a £7.3M release clause in his contract and the news is that Newcastle are now interested in the 53 times capped Ecuadorian International.

With Newcastle having now given up on both Saido Berahino of West Brom and Alexandre Lacazette of Lyon after failed attempts to sign them on a permanent basis ,  and with Loic Remy being chased by Premier League leaders Leicester City – Newcastle may have to quickly turn their attentions elsewhere.

Felipe Caicedo

27 yera-old Espanyol striker Felipe Caicedo

With striker being such a weakness in the Newcastle side this season, you would have thought a striker would have been our first signing and not our last this month – but the powers that be at the club sometimes work in strange ways.

Newcastle are reported ready to make  a move for the Espanyol forward, with Mundo Deportivo claiming that Everton are also keen on him and willing to pay the £7.3M release clause.

Caicedo is very keen to move to the Premier League and does have some experience in England having been  at Manchester City for three and a half years from January of 2008 and he played there 35 times with 3 goals.

Felipe left City in 2011 and played at Lokomotiv Moscow and Al Jazira before joining Espanyol in July of 2104 as a free agent.

Since he arrived in Spain he has scored 20 goals in 63 appearances for Espanyol who are currently 13th in La Liga.

Caicedo was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador and the 6ft 1ins striker has scored 19 goals in 59 appearances for his country.

The news is that both Everton and Newcastle are now interested in the striker who has scored 7 goals in 21 total appearances in Spain.

He is also his country’s top scorer at the moment in World Cup qualification with four goals in Ecuador’s first four qualifying games.

Felipe made his debut for Ecuador way back in 2005 as a teenager and one attraction for Newcastle could be his versatility as he can play in a number of forward and midfield positions.

But he is not a prolific goalscorer and in his club career he has 78 goals in 286 appearances.

Caicedo may very soon become the number one target for Newcastle, simply because we must bring in a striker this month.

Comments welcome.

Betty…there are not that many obvious options. At this point Berahino doesn’t even look like an option.

I told you what kind a player I thought we should be looking at and gave you an example. Don’t be rude alright?

    Chancel

You’re agitating for a transfer to Welshy boyo’s blog and it ain’t gonna happen. You’re wit is invaluable to morale. So, just knuckle down and carry on doing what you’re good at!

And to matters more germain, Charnley’s had months to line up players for the positions we need ’em and here we are, flapping about.

If ever a so-called MD deserved the boot, Charnley does.

  • 57 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jan 27, 2016 at 7:53 PM

Chancel…I don’t really know our options. We are linked with Remy on loan and a big money offer for Berahino.

They are good options taking everything into consideration, but I don’t know of they will make the difference.

Lacazette is a very exciting option as well but will he take time to settle. I don’t really know what our options are. A played like Aubameyang is probably what we need but what we cannot get!

  • 58 Thump // Jan 27, 2016 at 7:53 PM

Howay firebug, leave family out of it, man.

  • 59 The American // Jan 27, 2016 at 7:54 PM

With all the premium options for a striker not wanting to leave or unavailable to us this winter, it seems to me that we have no business left to do in the permanent. We don’t need a desperation buy. I feel the team is stronger than the bottom six as is. When, not if, we survive we should be reassessing the team then if we are bringing a striker in on a permanent deal. If Leicester bring in Remy I’d be shocked, we should go for him on loan and do what it takes. By the way… this this deal for Andros is going to be awful. At the very least Thauvin proved he could score at some point in his career.

A lot of you are asking “well where does this leave us vis a vis relegation?” Very good question lads. Are we a good enough team as we stand to finish 17th then? I would say yes. Errrm possibly. Do we have the firepower to frighten other clubs in the Prem now? Errrrm…… Have we improved that saggy defense that has let in so many goals? Errrmmm…..

  • 103 JackButler // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:17 PM

    West Lancs

There are a million and one options out there but very few that fall within the confines of how we operate.

We desperately need a striker, left back, and now that Williamson is leaving, we need cover in the centre defensive area more than ever. One or two injuries and we could be well and truly done in this league.

Remy would be a perfect addition, but he’ll have far better options than us, it looks like we won’t pay what’s needed to get Berahinio and the lad from Lyon as zero interest in coming here, so that leaves us with three shiny new midfielders, a defence that is abysmal and strikers who can’t score.

Worrying times my friend, very worrying

  • 104 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:18 PM

Yes Jack but he’s never been strong enough. He’s behind Sicknote & Lascelles in pecking order but yes we still need cover at LB & CB. Still think Robertson at Hull And Dunk at Brighton. Both young one Scottish & one English.
Both playing well at the moment I think

I think most of the blog share your concerns about the positions we never seem to address. Perhaps a short term fix in Crouchie on loan if there is no one else or the lad Leigh Griffiths at Celtic (playing at a totally lower level than Prem but seems to know where the net is.)

  • 109 lochinvar // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:24 PM

    Caicedo is an International player.
Townsend and Shelvey have England caps.
Looks like a change in transfer policy to me.

We lost 6-0 in the Mackems friendly?

The express is stating it’s a PR disaster. I say we are luring them into a false sense of security.

    West Lancs

Williamson may be down the pecking order but seeings as we hold the title for injuries we need him at least until the summer.

Saylor is a write off at this point in time, while Dummett is simply not good enough at left back and it looks like the best striker we have on our books is playing down at Coventry.

We spent big in the summer and again during this window and who knows maybe we will still see a few more additions before the window shuts, but in all honesty I think the years of inactivity and penny pinching have finally caught up with us meaning that the next few days are massive in the long term future of this club.

What’s happened with Tiote.? Heard the Chinese deal had stalled on players terms. Believe he was only offered £100k per week! Could we still have yet another midfielder. My word competition is going to be fierce in that department

Loïc Rémy is looking to leave Chelsea this month

Contrary to reports suggesting that Loïc Rémy’s preference is to remain at Chelsea for the rest of the season, Get French Football News understands that the player is closer than ever to the exit door.

Chelsea have received an offer worth £7.2m from Leicester City for the player. Rémy is not sure about this proposal, his aim is to join a Premier League side on loan until the end of the season in order to get consistent playing time to have a shot at a place in Didier Deschamps’s EURO 2016 squad.

Rémy this month has had four Premier League sides on his tail for a loan until the end of the season: Crystal Palace, Swansea, Newcastle and Aston Villa.

Who will win the race? Newcastle united ??We shall wait and see…

  • 118 jazzyp // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:31 PM

Cahill after leaving Chelsea this month after only 11 starts this season.

Would he be worth punt even at 30 yrs old ??

  • 119 GeordieTwo // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:31 PM

Does anybody know of any gimpy forwards with bad attitudes we could put a bid in on? This is important mates. Really think about this carefully….

  • 120 BandB // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:31 PM

There has been a change of policy.
    Without a shadow of doubt.
In previous years the policy was to STAY out of the relegation zone, and this year it’s to GET out of it.

  • 121 jazzyp // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:32 PM

A certain Ranger springs to mind

  • 122 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:33 PM

Agree entirely Jack . Perhaps it would be money well spent to get some professional injury specialist in to assess & address the problem. Sick of hearing we are top of the Premiership injury list every week. The full back position is most worrying of the lot to me as Dummett & Janmaat are the only fit fullbacks we have. Our next option is Mbabu (a promising prospect) brought in for the future. Haidara is long term injured. More injuries /suspensions and were stuffed & we all know if the problem is not sorted what will happen in February

  • 123 GeordieTwo // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:33 PM

I’m not sure Remy is gimpy enough for us jazzyp mate. True, he is a greedy little git so we have to consider that as well. Is his attitude positive at this point? I wonder. Actually I would take him on loan because we’re desperate.

  • 124 jimmysmith // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:34 PM

We have Collo, Mbemba, Lascelles, Dummett and now Taylor, and even Mbabu at CB. We need an one big upgrade, but we really don’t need Willo. Farewell, thank you, and good luck to a good solid pro and honest committed performer. Wolves is a good fit and we do need to create space in the squad. Same goes for Fergie, and half a dozen others who aren’t gonna help us now, or in the future.

We have plenty of players, but still lack the two or three of real quality at CB, LB and Striker that we need, and frankly, even if we did get them RIGHT NOW, we’d still be in real danger of going down.

It’s massively ironic, given the circumstances surrounding the club past and present under Ashley, and the money the game is suddenly awash in.

  • 125 BandB // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:35 PM

Cahill would be a very good signing.

  • 126 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:38 PM

Jazzy P You watch Pards come in for Remy. One of his best mates is supposed to be Sissoko though.
Cahill would be excellent for us but wages may well be the problem
I’d take em both on loan & problem apart from LB then nearly solved.
There was also mention of the young Chelsea LB Kane presently out on loan in the Dutch League that we may also be interested in.

  • 128 GeordieTwo // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:40 PM

We’ve paid too much for loads of players lately. And our hit rate is very low now with Carr. Who has been our best signing over the last 3 windows? And how many failures have there been? To carry on like this is ridiculous. We have about nine players who we are absolutely dependent on to get us out of this mess. Elliot, Mbemba, Colo, Sissoko, Wij, Shelvey, Perez, Mitro, and now Townsend. Are they up to it? I’m not sure….

  • 130 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:44 PM

    Lochinvar
We were obviously very worried about the lack of British players in the squad. Not a problem now. The problem now is getting the people at the top of the tree to get their priorities right & sort out decent strengthening at LB,St & CB but as Jimmy Smith quite rightly points out even that may not be enough with only 15 games left. All new players have to gell & hit the ground running

  • 131 will die for the toon army // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:47 PM

Cahill wld b a good signing if we would get Colo a new contract then i believe Mcca as a board member with the help of Moncur we can get him.

  • 132 geordie157 // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:47 PM

if we signed Cahill and got Remy in on loan, that would be fantastic business and finally signs of ambition being shown.

But I doubt we’d go for Cahill, big wages and he’ll prob want to sign for a top 6 side. Knowing Chelsea they’ll do business with Liverpool….try and recoup some of the Torres cash!

  • 133 jimmysmith // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:48 PM

Janmaat, Colback…….and where’s Tiote? In a crate in an SD Warehouse in Derbyshire, or summit.

  • 134 croftus5678 // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:49 PM

    @springy

tbf to luuk he had everything in his game apart from a harder shot >.< apart from that he was largely very good for us tbh considering he was not played as a striker most of the time.

  • 135 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:50 PM

Springy that’s very little in today’s prices for a 21 year old Dutch International once described by Alex Ferguson as the possible next Patrice Evra. If we are paying £12M for Townsend with his injury record this season. He’s got to be on our radar.

  • 136 GeordieTwo // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:51 PM

A loan for Cahill would be a good idea. Ashley definitely wouldn’t go beyond that. He’s too old to fit our transfer policy and his wage demands would be too high. No, we’ll get another young CB in during the summer and hope he works out, like Mbemba.

  • 139 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:52 PM

Would it not be great if for once we had proper left back cover so Dummett, Colback or Mbabu are not rushed back to play against Everton ?

So many times our players are either played out of position or rushed back from injuries that they never recover from would be just great if we got a specialist left back so Dummett could then be a centre half which is his natural position!

  • 140 will die for the toon army // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:54 PM

£5M is he an option. We looked at him last year

  • 143 geordie157 // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:55 PM

as long as we don’t bring in Senderos on a free…I’m content with current centre backs. If we can get a striker to take those chances we are creating the pressure eases on the defence!

Cahill and Remy, then Willems or maybe Robertson in the summer if Hull don’t come up.

Really hope they don’t come up, hate Hull and would like to see the smoggies, Derby and maybe someone like Sheff Weds return to the top flight.

  • 144 lochinvar // Jan 27, 2016 at 8:55 PM

Sky sources understand Newcastle defender Mike Williamson has agreed to join Wolves on an 18-month deal. He will travel to Molineux ahead of a medical tomorrow, and also had interest from Sheffield Wednesday.

The fee is believed to be worth £250,000.

  • 162 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 27, 2016 at 9:10 PM

Crofts There’s not a decent CB amongst them: Skirtel, Lovren, Sakho Toure. Wouldn’t want an of them no more than Mangala & Demechelis from City or that German Carthorse from Arsenal. Quite honestly there’re few decent SBs in Prem. Top of the league Foxes have Robert Huth (thug) & the uncompromising Wes Morgan & Wasllewski. All big bruisers but it seems to be working.
