The Times are reporting that Newcastle sent a scout to watch the very impressive 19 year-old Coventry City midfielder James Maddison in action over the weekend.
James has been compared to Dele Alli who has made such an impact this season at Tottenham after the London club beat Newcastle to the signing of the teenager almost exactly a year ago.
As might be expected Newcastle again will face competition from Spurs, who are now (unfortunately for us) a much more successful club than Newcastle – and they have also been watching Maddison.

Other big clubs said to be interested in the teenager include Liverpool and Arsenal and that’s not surprising given the way Dele Alli has quickly made his impact in the Premier League and for England over these last six months.
But with Maddison being a top young player in the lower leagues it could be difficult for Newcastle to beat out Tottenham and other big clubs to his signature.
And given how well Mauricio Pochettino has expertly handled Dele Alli over the last six months, that will not have gone unnoticed by the Coventry City youngster and his representatives.
The Spurs manager has quickly brought the youngster through to be a top player at Spurs.
However, if would be a great signing if Newcastle can get this player through the door and hopefully we have learned from our hesitation in signing Dele Alli a year ago.
At that time we balked at the £5M price tag – but he’s now worth maybe five times that.
What’s that about “fortune favors the brave”?
Maddison made his debut for his home town club Coventry as a substitute in August 2014 in the League Cup against Cardiff City, but them missed a large portion of last season due to a back injury, when he was out for about four months returning last April.
James has so far played 30 times with four goals for Coventry.
