Leicester To Beat Newcastle To Loic Remy

6:28 pm, Friday, January 29th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 48 Comments

Maybe the reason that Newcastle are reported to be trying to get Roma striker Seydou Doumbia in on loan is that Leicester look like winning the race to sign French striker Loic Remy from Chelsea.

The Mirror is reporting they think Leicester are close to a deal for the 29 year-old French striker, so it’s looking like once again he has decided not to sign for Newcastle – that’s a blow to our hopes of survival in the Premier League.

loic remy at hull.

Loic Remy – looks like he’ll sign for Leicester

The loan for Alexandre Pato of Corinthians is close to being completed by Chelsea and if the Mirror report is to be believed Remy would rather play for a team fighting to win the Premier League rather than a side fighting not to be relegated from the Premier League.

Well when you put it that way can you really blame Loic?

As soon as the Pato deal was complete it was expected the Remy deal could go through, so we can only assume that Loic has told Newcastle he prefers to sign for the Foxes.

Who would have thought this would have been possible a year ago – when newly promoted Leicester were rock bottom of the league and looked certain to be relegated?

Only this morning Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink had hinted Remy may be on his way:

“Remy has a slight calf injury right now. We’ll see what happens in the upcoming hours.” “But I don’t think being injured now has any influence on whether he stays or goes.”

As we had mentioned yesterday, if Swansea striker Bafe Gomis was our last option – which he now seems to be true – Newcastle could surprise us by going after another striker – maybe from the Championship.

But the news breaking at Sky Sports is we have moved for the Ivory Coast striker Seydou Doumbia on loan.

Doumbia is a prolific goalscorer but he didn’t do well at Roma last year after signing on from CSKA Moscow and he scored only two goals in 14 appearances for the Italian side.

He’s now back in Moscow on loan, where he’s scored 11 goals in 21 appearances so far this season.

Here’s our report on Newcastle’s move for Doumbia and as we say it probably was made after Newcastle realized Loic Remy was going to sign on at Leicester.

We don’t rate Gomis too highly because he did nothing much at Swansea – but Doumbia is also a risk if we are successful in getting him in on loan.

In 289 total appearances for a variety of clubs he’s scored 167 goals – so he’s a natural goalscorer alright.

It’s a pity about Loic Remy if the Mirror report is accurate.

Comments welcome.

Pathetic. We can’t even organize a loan deal.

    Keith Downie

Busy few days to come at Newcastle United – potential for up to 3 more new faces to arrive before deadline.

If you was Remy, Who would you choose.Current PL leaders, Or relegation candidate ?

  • 5 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:35 PM

Good news if true. Why should we cheer a player who has no affinity with this club and wouldn’t want any? All because Charnley and Carr are incompetent.

  • 6 Belfast // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:36 PM

Obviously not keen on paying him 85k a week.

  • 7 optimistic prime // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:36 PM

Remy would rather sit on his arse and collect his dollar, nowt to do with football.

    Not fussed tbh

  • 8 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:37 PM

    Reilly 3 players

so The Brazilian, Doumbia and ?

  • 9 2_goal_tino // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:38 PM

‘He will be only the 4th Brazilian to play for Newcastle, if he signs that is. I wonder what the aversion has been to Brazilian players in the past.’

That is easy to answer in three words… Caçapa, Fumaça, Mirandinha … that triumvirate is enough to put anyone off!

  • 10 reilly // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:39 PM

theres talk of santoon coming back on loan.

  • 11 CypriotDelight // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:39 PM

Remy is a merc – choice between us and top of the table? Come on…he has no affiliation really and the only thing to get him here would be lots of money and a get out clause!

  • 12 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:43 PM

What would be the point of signing 2 left backs on loan?

  • 13 jazzyp // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:43 PM

It Amazes me how most on here wanted Remy back. Now there is a story that he may be going to Leicester..All of a sudden he’s a mercenary.
We all knew what the Player was about when he chose Qpr over us, And nothing has changed.

So why be surprised he may have jilted us at the alter again !

  • 14 JP...from The Rock // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:46 PM

Doumbia would be good but I prefer Remy who is proven. We can’t take any gambles.

  • 15 reilly // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:51 PM

talk that leicester have bought remy.

  • 16 Mister Tuff // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:51 PM

Carl – Hahahaha – what do you mean start on football.
Aaaahhhhh ——— do you mean further explanations of “Maccas’ Bwave New World” -by you bwave soldiers.

What a load of poncey shyte. Your literary forays are of a spectacular failure – your arrogance holds no bounds. Don’t give up the day job.

Writing letters to King Percy – what a clot.

  • 17 Our Toon // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:53 PM

Remy will sit on his arse no matter who he joins. The lad is injury prone to flip!! No idea why so many have a hard on for him on here. He’s missed more games than Tiote this, he’s been injured longer than SDJ.

You can’t keep a team in the prem by sitting on the treatment table. Looking at him at the weekend and the horrible condition he was in in terms of hos fitness I really hope Leicester do get him. Remy of 2 or 3 seasons ago is a very different player to the one we all see now

  • 18 carl // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:54 PM

I thought Hail got it spot on!

  • 19 NoahJ // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:57 PM

Remy clearly wants first team football leading up to the Euros. It therefore would make no sense to go to a team with 2 guaranteed starters (Mahrez and Vardy), over a team he knows well and has previously played well for, where he will be guaranteed a game every week.

This is Remy though, who chose relegation-bound QPR over newcastle because of money

  • 20 Williamson is Bramble in disguise // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:57 PM

Good wouldn’t want that snake back anyway not asif he ever really wanted to be here, if the club insists on bringing a player back make it wor Benny! Been my favourite player in a toon shirt since Robert and we miss the space he used to buy us being marked by 2 players all the time. You could probably make a decent team out of the players we’ve let go during the Ashley era, and save a few quid too in comparison to the relegation fodder we’ve kept. Any thoughts?

    My team would be:
    —Ben arfa———-cabella—
    ————demba ba———–
Sub’s: harper, Enrique, simpson, Barton, kemen, jonas, Carroll

So maybe not top 4 but wouldn’t mind them giving our current bunch a good go!

  • 21 Bobbybee // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:58 PM

Just because we are after a player, doesn’t give us any divine right to sign them. Nor does it mean the club have failed. You can’t make a player sign if he doesn’t want to. Right now we’re hardly the most attractive option. We’ve been messed around by West Brom for almost the entire window, before they finally say they’ll sell to anyone except us! January isn’t the easiest window, yet we’ve done decent business so far and it’s not finished yet. Alot can happen in three days.

  • 22 Jib // Jan 29, 2016 at 6:58 PM

    Our Toon
When Remy came on for Costa against a 10 man Arsenal I expected him to fill his boots.
He was crap , he cocked up chances that Mitro would have put away nae botha.

  • 23 optimistic prime // Jan 29, 2016 at 7:00 PM

All week I’ve said I didn’t want Remy, so have plenty others. I wasn’t convinced, then watching him against Arsenal and realising he’s got no chance of a call up with France, then after thinking how he performed after xmas last time he was here, no thanks.

He’s sat on a bench for 2 years and has had plenty of niggly injuries, not the player we had. Would have took him if there was nowt else but that doesnt say much. How long to get him match fit, 3/5 games?

I’d take Doumbia over him all day, If I had the choice Lacazzete but can’t see it I think we have a chance with Berihinio but that’s going to go right to the wire.

  • 24 optimistic prime // Jan 29, 2016 at 7:00 PM

We have a chance if we are actually trying to get him I should say

  • 25 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 29, 2016 at 7:05 PM

I’m with you OP I think Berahino will become a toon player

  • 26 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 29, 2016 at 7:05 PM

If the club doesn’t sign its targets, pays well over the odds on duboous signings, and doesn’t fill the priority positions, I’d say it’s failed. Especially if it’s a result of putting itself in the relegation zone through its own incompetence.

  • 27 Jib // Jan 29, 2016 at 7:06 PM

    Tsunki’s team would be:
    —Ben arfa———-cabella—
    ————demba ba

    Ha ha ha ha

What are you going to call them ?
    Cheltenham girls ?

  • 28 Williamson is Bramble in disguise // Jan 29, 2016 at 7:07 PM

Reilly – would love santon back! As long as he wasn’t made the scapegoat for collocinis shortcomings again, the amount of times that lad used to clear the ball off the line to no gratitude, usually down to an out of position colo as per most of the goals we concede, this season that shows!

Berahino might become a Newcastle player but I don’t see it in this window, maybe the summer. I’m a fan of his and don’t believe too much into this bad attitude he supposedly has.

With all the millions available and spent, is it too much to ask to be able to say “wow, fantastic, exciting signing”? The only player who has really impressed me is Gini. He’s the only one I’d hate to lose.

  • 37 will die for the toon army // Jan 29, 2016 at 7:12 PM

If we get these signings in and Mcca gives his excuses.

  • 38 SPRINGY // Jan 29, 2016 at 7:13 PM

its probs as simple as we’ve made an offer to remy and he does not want to come here….not much the club can do about that, lacazette apparently did not want to come…nowt the club can do about it….just move on to your next target.

  • 39 Jail for Ashley // Jan 29, 2016 at 7:13 PM

  • 40 Williamson is Bramble in disguise // Jan 29, 2016 at 7:14 PM

Jib with the exception of wiji Perez and mbemba I’d take a straight swap, maybe sissoko or tiote on a good day! Or cisse if he’s in the mood… Our current squad deserves to be where it is end of, a few good players doesn’t make a good team, especially when you’ve got a 2nd rate manager shite defenders and can’t score…

  • 41 ronaldo aarons // Jan 29, 2016 at 7:14 PM

This atletico left back were linked with. Haven’t seen him this year but last year he was decent for them but agree with the majority of people who say he is not he best defender. He’s not and is a stop gap for somebody like willems signing this summer which I’m ok with but being honest I’m fairly old fashioned and prefer full backs to be defenders first and foremost which neither are. Although willems is actually tremendous going forward.

Can’t blame Remy for choosing Leicester over Newcastle
Play in a winning team or an unpredictable toon side which you never know which team will turn up

  • 47 ToonMatt // Jan 29, 2016 at 11:18 PM

This is how far we have come under Mike Ashley, Players preferring moves to Leicester over us? Sad times.

  • 48 mainemagpie // Jan 29, 2016 at 11:39 PM

Remy has played 70 games in the Championship and Premier Leagues in four years and has scored 28 goals. He is a striker for a team that is playing as well as West Bromwich Albion this season and yet still cannot get first team games. Only Man City have scored more goals than Leicester this season so how does Remy who will probably only score 6 times, fit into their plans over the next 15 games? It doesn’t make any sense.
