Maybe the reason that Newcastle are reported to be trying to get Roma striker Seydou Doumbia in on loan is that Leicester look like winning the race to sign French striker Loic Remy from Chelsea.
The Mirror is reporting they think Leicester are close to a deal for the 29 year-old French striker, so it’s looking like once again he has decided not to sign for Newcastle – that’s a blow to our hopes of survival in the Premier League.
Loic Remy – looks like he’ll sign for Leicester
The loan for Alexandre Pato of Corinthians is close to being completed by Chelsea and if the Mirror report is to be believed Remy would rather play for a team fighting to win the Premier League rather than a side fighting not to be relegated from the Premier League.
Well when you put it that way can you really blame Loic?
As soon as the Pato deal was complete it was expected the Remy deal could go through, so we can only assume that Loic has told Newcastle he prefers to sign for the Foxes.
Who would have thought this would have been possible a year ago – when newly promoted Leicester were rock bottom of the league and looked certain to be relegated?
Only this morning Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink had hinted Remy may be on his way:
“Remy has a slight calf injury right now. We’ll see what happens in the upcoming hours.” “But I don’t think being injured now has any influence on whether he stays or goes.”
As we had mentioned yesterday, if Swansea striker Bafe Gomis was our last option – which he now seems to be true – Newcastle could surprise us by going after another striker – maybe from the Championship.
But the news breaking at Sky Sports is we have moved for the Ivory Coast striker Seydou Doumbia on loan.
We understand Newcastle have made an enquiry about the possibility of taking Roma striker Seydou Doumbia on loan until the summer.

Doumbia is a prolific goalscorer but he didn’t do well at Roma last year after signing on from CSKA Moscow and he scored only two goals in 14 appearances for the Italian side.
He’s now back in Moscow on loan, where he’s scored 11 goals in 21 appearances so far this season.
Here’s our report on Newcastle’s move for Doumbia and as we say it probably was made after Newcastle realized Loic Remy was going to sign on at Leicester.
We don’t rate Gomis too highly because he did nothing much at Swansea – but Doumbia is also a risk if we are successful in getting him in on loan.
In 289 total appearances for a variety of clubs he’s scored 167 goals – so he’s a natural goalscorer alright.
It’s a pity about Loic Remy if the Mirror report is accurate.
