Newcastle In Last Ditch Effort To Sign Striker Target

12:54 pm, Friday, January 29th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 117 Comments

There’s news in the local papers today Newcastle will be lucky to get Saido Berahino to the club with West Brom Chairman Jeremy Peace seeming to make it abundantly clear to anybody who will listen to him –  that he will not be selling his 22 year-old striker this month.

But the Shields Gazette are reporting that Newcastle will make one last ditch effort over the next 24 hours to try to get a deal done – but Newcastle have to be very careful with the transfer window closing on Monday and we must get a top striker in by then.

Saido Berahino – last effort by Newcastle

While Berahino seems to remain Newcastle’s main striker target we would be very happy to get Loic Remy in on loan, but it’s always difficult to judge how difficult that will be – and whether the Frenchman really wants to come back to Newcastle – as has been reported.

The other potential problem is whether Chelsea will let him leave.

Corinthians striker Pato should be making a loan move to the London club official – maybe today – but Chelsea would like to move out on-loan Monaco striker Radamel Falcao who has started just one Premier League game for Chelsea this season – rather than Frenchman Remy.

Falcao has made 11 total appearances for Chelsea this season, but most of those of those have come from the subs bench and he’s been injured since October and has had another recent setback in his recovery.

His loan spell has hardly been a success at Chelsea and it follows his unsuccessful loan stint at Manchester United last season.

If Falcao does leave Chelsea  in January, then we assume Loic Remy would not be available to join Newcastle.

Comments welcome.

Under 21’s don’t count. So in players over 21 (apart from Krul who is out for the season we have..

    Elliot, Darlow
Coloccini, Dummett, Janmaat, Lascelles, Haidara, Taylor
Colback, Wijnaldum, Sissoko, Anita, De Jong, Shelvey, Obertan, Thauvin, Townsend, Saivet, Tiote, Marveaux
    Cisse, Gouffran, Perez, Riviere

    That is 24 players.

Mitrovic, Aarons, Mbemba and Toney don’t count towards that quota.

Unless the club delists a player from the squad (making them inelibible to play) or somebody is sold we only have room for one more incoming transfer.

Tiote and Thauvin haven’t gone anywhere yet.

“Newcastle” and “Last Ditch” in the same sentence, Ed? You getting carried away? 🙂

  • 4 manxpie // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:02 PM

My absolute pet hate of all pet hates is the term “championship or league 1 player at best” and willo has been called them many a time on here dummet too
they’ve both proved themselves in the prem in fact a hell of a lot more than players we’ve spunked multi millions on

  • 5 Tsunki // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:02 PM

How come were still talking about Postman Pato?

It appears I missed Welshgeordie’s joke fest yesterday. That was close.

  • 7 Belfast // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:08 PM

Well said manxpie for once. Good luck to him.

  • 8 Toon_Tom // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:09 PM

manx – i know what you mean and i understand.

Willo proved vital to us in many games, provided good cover and not one for picking up injuries.

My point being is that he will stand out a lot more at Wolves and will be a favourite amongst the players and fans and could even captain the team!

  • 9 bladeuser // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:11 PM

Just for u Willo and Dummet r league one class at best that’s one of the reasons that nufc will always be second class as to many fans like you think given 100% is all that matters

  • 10 Toon_Tom // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:11 PM

i think the fact that they will respect him and appreciate him more will bode well for the big guy – good luck to him

Cheeky fusker belfast it’s actually twice I posted the same on the last thread

  • 12 Novocastrian66 // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:16 PM

Blofal; that front four really explains why we’re in the shit. Without wanting to incur the wrath of manxpie, they’re Championship players at best. With the exception of Perez that is.?

  • 13 Mag52 // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:16 PM

    Good luck to you Willo.
A good pro of the ‘old school’.
Cost us next to nothing in today’s terms, and repaid it many times over.

  • 14 manxpie // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:17 PM

Bladeuser yeah that’s why a championship club has just bought him and why he’s played over a hundred games in the prem

I’ve got no problem with players who actually are lol just not players who clearly can play in the prem

  • 18 Mag52 // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:21 PM

Do you accept that Willo always gave 100% for the club ?
If so, give the bloke a bit of credit you miserable so and so.

  • 19 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:21 PM

No doubt the fans on here who were creaming themselves in the summer window are the same ones who are glowing about this one. It’s a dog’s breakfast so far. No surprise given it’s the same incompetents who are running the show.

  • 20 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:23 PM

It all smacks of desperation. Paying over the odds for average or unreliable or flawed players.

  • 21 Nufc-83 // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:27 PM

That left back sounds the replica of dummet based on the comments in the last thread. Strong in the tackle and likes long balls 🙁
We need someone who can cause a threat in possession!!

  • 22 bladeuser // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:27 PM

He wouldn’t have played anywhere near 100 games at any other club he wouldn’t of been anywhere near a top sides reserve team never mind there first team he was here six years no wonder we couldn’t defend with and I use the term loosely players like him Dummet and sick note Taylor

  • 23 Nufc-83 // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:28 PM

Also glad will I had gone as he was an utter disgrace to the shirt in terms of ability.

  • 24 manxpie // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:28 PM

Isn’t there a loan period after deadline day to foreign leagues? if so we can get rid of a few that way

  • 25 Nufc-83 // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:28 PM

    Willo has*

  • 26 manxpie // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:33 PM

Of course we could’ve got better
but the fact is we didn’t in fact the player we did spunk 8 mill? on to replace willo ended up getting replaced by willo after being shocking!

  • 27 Essex Geordie Bill // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:34 PM

Leicester and Watford have teams of former “Just Championship” players and they aren’t doing too badly.

I wish we had a few like them.

Good luck to Williamson, I’d wouldn’t be surprised to see him playing well and even silencing up a lot of his critics up when Wolves come back up and block us out defensively.
We should be keeping him until the Summer imo.

  • 28 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:38 PM

I don’t understand this desire for full backs to do the job of a winger. Meanwhile it falls apart at the back. I’d be more than happy with a full back who can defend. It’s why I prefer Dummett over Jamnutz.

  • 29 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:42 PM

Willo should’ve gone long ago. It’s the incompetence of Graham Carr that has kept him here for so long.

  • 30 bladeuser // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:42 PM

I am pleased u love willo as if u visit the wolves ground next season in the championship u can kill two birds with one stone and watch him stop our strikers
No wonder nufc r so mediocre when fans settle for any old tosh

got a feeling that all these links are simp,y the clubs PR machine being kicked into overtime. • 33 lesh // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:46 PM

Poor old Charnley. He’s doing his best (harrumph) to get a striker and a defender in. And what thanks does he get? None.

He’s brought in Thauvin early and now the results of following Carr’s there for all to see. A midfielder he’s trying to ship out after five months and no striker. Oh and there’s the small matter of our seive-like defence.

We’ve been witness to another fine example of Charnley’s incompetence.

  • 34 belgrade fan // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:49 PM

skysport understand there were no bids for Berahino so far in this window

  • 35 JackButler // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:54 PM

The fact the Charnely still trusts Carr’s judgement on a player is grounds for dismissal for gross misconduct. For a club that has had limited funds over the years the amount of money these two chancers have wasted is frightening especially when you look at the kind of players other clubs are signing for the same amounts or even less. But if nothing else they are consistent, consistently negligent, but consistent non the less

  • 39 toonking // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:56 PM

He might not have the skill of a premier league CB but he most certainly had the work rate of a decent CB and the performance of Leicester city proves even players with skill of championship can be of great use to premier league teams thanks to all that extra work rate and passionate play. Willo was a very similar player himself, I wish him the best of luck at his new club and thank him for all the commitment he give us.

  • 40 SPRINGY // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:56 PM

    afternoon all
good luck to willo…ironically a few of our more better defensive displays came when him and mbiwa and a few games together at cb when taylor and colo were injured…he was a decent squad member but not a long term first teamer….striker search seems to of dried up…by the look of things.

  • 41 Essex Geordie Bill // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:57 PM

Bladeuser, are calling me a welsh tart just cos I think Willo is a decent player.

  • 42 Wayayman // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:57 PM

Blackley, it’s fine if you don’t understand why top teams have attack minded ‘fullbacks’. The game these days is thought of in two formations; one formation when they are in possession and he other when they are defending. For a modern right or left back to be able to defend is important for sure, but it’s vital that they are able to decisively contribute in attack when their team is in possession. Sometimes it’s the way Coleman or Baines play with pace and skill, other times it’s like Gary Neville used to contribute by having the ability to offer themselves as an outlet to the midfielder in possession and thus drawing an opponent towards them. When Neville received the ball in an offensive position his first thought was to get a cross in. Sadly something we’ve been totally lacking down our left side for years. Not since the Enrique/Jonas partnership I think. Janmaat while not as defensive minded as dummet, offers us so much more in the right and arguably allows sissoko more room to attack. The job of today’s central defenders is to slot in and cover for the fullbacks if they are caught out of position – which I think Mbemba does amazingly well.
I can’t understand why people slate Janmaat as being a rubbish defender as he isn’t. He just gets let down by sissoko getting caught in possession far too many times in a game thus leaving Janmaat out in a limb having tried to give sissoko a passing option further up the field. Because of this, recently it looks like Janmaat has been less attack minded if sissoko has the ball which is why we might be better off without Moussa in the team and instead replace him with a proper right sided midfielder who will make good decisions with the ball. Sissoko is possibly the worst decision maker on the pitch most weeks.

    Willo gone eh……Gutted….not !
I wish him all the best as you cannot knock a tryer. but apart from one season to note he epitomised the standard of most of our squad over the last 5 year.
The likes of Willo,Marvs,Guoffy,Riviere,Obershocker have not been good enough.

Welsh, we have to admit we were cr*p in the world cup but have you taken into account the new England coach.

Not to mention the new captain, the other 5 nations need to be very afraid.!!

Speaking of Rugby is there any reason why teams in football can’t lift players up at corner kicks etc. same as in line-ups in rugby.

  • 54 Macas // Jan 29, 2016 at 2:21 PM

Wayayman – And Dummett gets let down by having nobody in front of him when he gets the ball as we haven’t played a conventional left winger all season. When he has a decent winger in front of him he’s actually not that bad going forward and gets some decent balls in the box. Add in the fact he scored against Man U and was unlucky not to score the game after that and his stats aren’t that bad compared to Janmatt’s, who in the league has scored one goal and made 3 assists.

  • 55 Nufc-83 // Jan 29, 2016 at 2:31 PM

Toonking workrate should be a given when you get to premier league level not something you can judge a player on unless they have an extraordinary work rate that totally outweighs most others such as Suarez.

Willo did not have a work rate that stood head and shoulders above other players in the team or league.

  • 56 defenders needed // Jan 29, 2016 at 2:37 PM

Why can we only manage to do one transfer at a time it seems to me that we are only trying to bring one play through the door at a time. Surely we have all the positions needed to replace wrote down so how come we couldn’t of tried for all these players at the same time, brought them in together at the start of the window, so they can get together quicker. Rather than in dribs and drabs through out the window right up till the last day of the window because we only concentrate on one player at a time, any reasons to this does anybody know?

Williamson is a Championship player at best. How can it annoy you for anyone to say that? It is absolutely an opinion and one that is shared by many. Do you need a definition of what an opinion is buddy?

  • 59 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 29, 2016 at 2:41 PM

Van Aanholt does it down the road. Good getting forward. Crap defender. It asks too much of fullbacks in terms of their skill set and ground to cover. Great in theory. Great in practice if you’ve got the rare talent. Unfortunately rarely carried off satisfactorily in practice. Defend first. Anything after thst is a bonus.

Jamnutz is a slow, average defender, easily turned and rarely ready to cover his CBs. When he gets forward, he’s profligate, often setting the opposition away with his poor deliveries.

  • 60 Sliema // Jan 29, 2016 at 2:43 PM

To certain posters on the blog, could you’ll be kind enough to observe the 2 odd looking symbols at the start of my post. The first one is called a “FULL STOP/DOT” (depending on where you’re from) and is used after completing a sentence to indicate that it’s over.
And the second squiggly line is a “COMMA” and is used to connect two sentences together, that are generally inter-dependent.

Your views would be far more easier to read and understand.

    Thank You.

Newcastle United Under-21s stormed to a convincing 4-2 win at West Brom today.

Callum Roberts led the way with a double, heading home a Sean Longstaff cross for the opener and doubling the lead with a 20-yarder early in the second half.

Tyler Roberts rallied Albion, and Kyle Spence equalised at 2-2 before the home side missed a penalty, Josh Ezewele firing his effort against the bar and over.

Newcastle regrouped to win it with two goals late on, Liam Gibson driving in off the post from 15 yards before Lewis McNall bagged a fourth from close range.

That handed Albion only their second defeat in the Barclays U21 Premier League Second Division, with Newcastle moving level on points with seventh-placed Swansea following their fourth win of the season.

As for the term ‘Crap’ when it is applied to some players what exactly is meant.

Does it imply that the player in question is rubbish in every game he plays, don’t see that that applies to Williamson.

Was he occasionally cr*p, so getting the full magnitude of the words intent.

Was he sometimes let down by the defensive system he had to play in or his fellow players therefore deserving of being called cr*p.

And I would strongly disagree that he wouldn’t get as many games with other EPL teams, I would bet that he would have been a permanent fixture in a Pulis team.

This is not an Iron Mike love-in or tribute but saying he is cr*p is a bit strong.

I do believe that Ashley’s seen what others perceive as incompetence as Charnley’s probably performed to Ashley’s expectations.

However, there can be no excusing the appalling management of major investment and after spending about £80m so far, we still haven’t strengthened our defence and we’re still crying out for a striker that can find the inside of the net. McClaren can’t be blamed for that.

So, regardless of whether we go down, Charnley’s incompetence along with his naivety has been patently obvious and he’s shown himself to be out of his depth as MD. His judgement has been severely lacking.

    He surely must go.

Jib Jibberish – the blog pest and general knacker.

You seem to be having an unusually gaffe free period at the moment – however I’ve no doubt that will change shortly and I can take the opportunity to put you right (yet again).
Shouldn’t you be preparing lectures for your students?
I know nothing of this Lena person.

  • 110 WWSBRD // Jan 29, 2016 at 5:04 PM

Pretty poor at passing and likes to play the long ball mate

Good at dribbling and crossing though, likes to stay concentrated as well

They say he is hard to get past though and has a pretty good pass completion rate over 80% I think I read this morning.

  • 113 WWSBRD // Jan 29, 2016 at 5:10 PM

Dunno mate my knowledge of him says nothing about his defensive work

  • 114 Williamson is Bramble in disguise // Jan 29, 2016 at 5:13 PM

I don’t understand why we as a club feel so limited in our targets, like out of all the strikers in the world how can it be that we might have to resort to remy or gomis… Surely there’s someone out there we could buy! Far rather we shipped out craptain colo and got a few decent defenders in, the man’s been the common denominator in one of the worst defences in the league for years! Doesn’t matter how many you score when your defence lets in 2-3 goals per game you’re destined for trouble…

  • 115 firebug666 // Jan 29, 2016 at 5:14 PM

I think it might have been another LB I was reading about, Lucas Orban we were link with him this morning. Sorry for the confusion mate.

  • 116 WWSBRD // Jan 29, 2016 at 5:15 PM

Haha no bother mate I know nothing about either I was just spouting what I read on whoscored, got to get in quick before the ‘experts’ arrive

  • 117 isleofmanman // Jan 30, 2016 at 11:36 AM

    Forget Berahino FFS.

Apart from him being an overpriced agent driven whiner the only priority is a proven/reliable/ poacher/goalscoring No 9
