It looks like Newcastle are now trying to bring in at least one new defender before the transfer window closes on Monday night and there is news today in the Mail that we are interested in signing Valencia left-back Lucas Orban on loan for the rest of the season.
Lucas Orban – Valencia left-back
The 6ft tall Argentine International turns 27 next Wednesday and he is a versatile player who can also play at center-back – so he would be good signing for us if we can get him in.
And Ian Cathro worked with Lucas during his time as assistant manager at Valencia so the young Newcastle coach will have provided good input on the twice capped Argentine International.
Orban started his career at River Plate before moving to another Argentine club Tigre in 2012 and then he moved to Bordeaux on year later before finally ending up at Valencia in the summer of 2014.
Graham Carr is also familiar with the player having watched him while he was at Bordeaux.
He cost around £2.5M 18 months ago when he moved from Bordeaux to Valencia and the news is that we are in talks with Gary Neville’s club with a view to getting a loan deal agreed.
Lucas is a fairly recent International having been called up for the Argentine National side at the end of 2013 for the friendly matches against Ecuador and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He made his international debut two days later, starting in the 0–0 draw against Ecuador and then picked up his second cap in a 2-0 win over El Salvador.
He has played only 12 times for Valencia this season and his contract at the Spanish club lasts through June of 2019 – and since joining Valencia 18 months ago he has made a total of 45 appearances with one goal.
It seems that Newcastle want more defensive cover after we had only four fit defenders for our last game at Watford and you could argue that cost us points because we had to change our formation at the back and it just didn’t seem to work and we lost the game – the fifth defeat in the last seven games.
We would assume if we can get Orban in on loan and he does well for us, Newcastle could sign him permanently in the summer.
This is a good move by Newcastle.
Now if we can sign Loic Remy on loan it will have been a very good transfer window.
