Newcastle In Talks To Sign Argentine International Defender

12:06 pm, Friday, January 29th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 31 Comments

It looks like Newcastle are now trying to bring in at least one new defender before the transfer window closes on Monday night and there is news today in the Mail that we are interested in signing Valencia left-back Lucas Orban on loan for the rest of the season.

lucas orban

Lucas Orban – Valencia left-back

The  6ft tall Argentine International turns 27 next Wednesday and he is a versatile player who can also play at center-back – so he would be good signing for us if we can get him in.

And Ian Cathro worked with Lucas during his time as assistant manager at Valencia so the young Newcastle coach will have provided good input on the twice capped Argentine International.

Orban started his career at River Plate before moving to another Argentine club Tigre in 2012 and then he moved to Bordeaux on year later before finally ending up at Valencia in the summer of 2014.

Graham Carr is also familiar with the player having watched him while he was at Bordeaux.

He cost around £2.5M 18 months ago when he moved from Bordeaux to Valencia and the news is that we are in talks with Gary Neville’s club with a view to getting a loan deal agreed.

Lucas is a fairly recent International having been called up for the Argentine National side at the end of 2013 for the friendly matches against Ecuador and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He made his international debut two days later, starting in the 0–0 draw against Ecuador and then picked up his second cap in a 2-0 win over El Salvador.

He has played only 12 times for Valencia this season and his contract at the Spanish club lasts through June of 2019 – and since joining Valencia 18 months ago he has made a total of 45 appearances with one goal.

It seems that Newcastle want more defensive cover after we had only four fit defenders for our last game at Watford and you could argue that cost us points because we had to change our formation at the back and it just didn’t seem to work and we lost the game – the fifth defeat in the last seven games.

We would assume if we can get Orban in on loan and he does well for us, Newcastle could sign him permanently in the summer.

This is a good move by Newcastle.

Now if we can sign Loic Remy on loan it will have been a very good transfer window.

Comments welcome.

Is this lad any good though? I’ve never seen him play

  • 2 lesh // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:11 PM

    Fingers crossed this s true.

Ah, but if it is, can Charnley deal with so much on his desk in the remaining few days of the window? A striker and a LB?

Now that is asking a bit much

  • 3 why oh why // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:12 PM

    Cathro has recommended him

You’re quick off the mark with your posts. Is Ed giving you previews?

I’d go as far as saying we would have already had a second stint in the championship without willo
steady eddy if ever there was one and people say he didn’t defend well with his head he was the only defender that could head as the rest were midgets in defender terms and he couldn’t be in 5 places at once

  • 6 AncientC // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:16 PM

Charnley will standing at the airport waiting to welcome him with a ushanka in his hands.

Can someone explain to me how the squad system works? Because we have 27 players right now…

  • 8 toontaff2 // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:19 PM

Penfold will have to bring in a new tea boy at this rate – or the board will have no biscuits.

  • 9 Blofal // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:20 PM

Actually we have 28 players including Townsend… we can only name a squad of 25…

  • 10 expatmag // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:24 PM

Wiliamson is gone. Tiote will probably go.

Mitrovic and Aarons classified as under 21 and maybe Mbemba too so they font need to be included.

Krul out for the season injured and can be dropped from the squad.

  • 11 beermonkey // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:28 PM

we don’t have to name them all

  • 12 Toon_Tom // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:28 PM

Betting suspended on Philips joining our massive over populated midfield

  • 13 Polarboy // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:30 PM

The official Valencia clips of this lad really emphasised his tackling ability which seems above average, hard to really tell from a clip and the league he’s in of course. He seems like the sort of left back that won’t let anyone past him without and almighty fight, which is exactly what we need.

  • 14 Blofal // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:30 PM

That makes sense. From my calculations as it stands then we have 23 players. 24 if Tiote doesn’t end up leaving.

So unless Tiote or someone else leaves… we are only bringing in one more player this window.

Jib I wasn’t being thoughtless it is my opinion

Lesh, no I spotted it after I made my last remark on last page

  • 16 Take a Chancel on me // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:33 PM

Polarboy seems the kind of player we need

  • 17 chewbaccy // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:33 PM

i was under the impression the squad can be rejigged after the window closes

  • 18 Jib // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:37 PM

    * denotes under 21 on Jan1st 2016

Prabably Ivan Toney as well (under 21 also)

  • 20 optimistic prime // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:40 PM

Good luck to Willo, proper pro.
Ain’t got a bad word against him

  • 21 ToonMatt // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:40 PM

I’d prefer someone proven in this league, Keiron Gibbs would be a better signing and wouldn’t need time to settle in? Get him in along with Loic Remy and I’d be happy with this window.

  • 22 Toon_Tom // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:45 PM

under 21s not included in the 25 man squad!

  • 23 AncientC // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:47 PM

    Lucas Orban’s Style of Play

    Likes to play long balls
    Likes to tackle
    Commits fouls often

    Avg. Pass Accuracy 81%

Out of 7 games played this season, he has 4 yellows and 1 red. A slight worry, but better he have some bite than come to the Premier League too tame.

  • 24 Toon_Tom // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:48 PM

id grab Santon – isnt getting his game, his lass is from here, would slot straight back in!

Gibbs is a good shout tho – havent seen much of this Orban.

Sure Penfold asked someone to get him a Borbon to go with his tea – hence the interest in Orban!

  • 25 Tsunki // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:48 PM

On Willo – cost us just under a million, so for the money he was a very good reliable runabout, served us very well in the championship, did all that he was asked. Shame that his continued presence in the premier league became a byword for our lack of ambition. I think he will be a crowd favourite at Wolves, honest and a good worker if not the most confident ball player. Thanks for the service Iron Mike. Note to wolves Manager, if you are thinking of putting him at the back stick for corners…..

  • 26 Jail for Ashley // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:50 PM

I can’t believe somebody has said good riddance to a player that has given his absolute all. To say he wasn’t good enough isn’t saying much for the rest of the team considering he has played more games than anyone else in the team since promotion and probably a few of them put together.

  • 27 Toon_Tom // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:51 PM

Tsunki – i agree with that.

Solid, no frills defender – built for the Championship IMO so will do very well there I reckon.

He could be keeping Mitrovic in his pocket next season 😉

  • 28 Blofal // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:56 PM

Under 21’s don’t count. So in players over 21 (apart from Krul who is out for the season we have..

    Elliot, Darlow
Coloccini, Dummett, Janmaat, Lascelles, Haidara, Taylor
Colback, Wijnaldum, Sissoko, Anita, De Jong, Shelvey, Obertan, Thauvin, Townsend, Saivet, Tiote, Marveaux
    Cisse, Gouffran, Perez, Riviere

    That is 24 players.

Mitrovic, Aarons, Mbemba and Toney don’t count towards that quota.

Unless the club delists a player from the squad (making them inelibible to play) or somebody is sold we only have room for one more incoming transfer.

Tiote and Thauvin haven’t gone anywhere yet.

  • 29 Tsunki // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:57 PM

Anyone not worried that Neville won’t mind letting this defender go?

  • 30 manxpie // Jan 29, 2016 at 12:59 PM

My absolute pet hate of all pet hates is the term “championship or league 1 player at best” and willo has been called them many a time on here dummet too
they’ve both proved themselves in the prem in fact a hell of a lot more than players we’ve spunked multi millions on

  • 31 davetoon // Jan 29, 2016 at 1:42 PM

Seriously people say they want Gibbs and then they would be calling him sicknote within 3 weeks after he gets his annual long term injury.
