Bafe Gomis Is Not The Striker Newcastle Need

9:39 pm, Saturday, January 30th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 34 Comments

It looks like Newcastle have missed out on all the strikers we have gone after this month – Alexandre Lacazette, Saido Berahino and Loic Remy and perhaps we didn’t even bid for the bargain buy Charlie Austin of QPR who went to Southampton for £4M.

So it looks like we are trying to buy Swansea’s Bafe Gomis, a player who we bid £9M for back in the summer of 2013 – and he now has a release clause in his contract of £7M.

bafe gomis swasnea

Bafe Gomis – Swansea striker

But if the news is to be believed Bafe is the one we are trying to sign so late in this transfer window-  and he’s simply not good enough to rescue Newcastle from relegation.

Why have Swansea brought in another striker with Gomis still on their books?

A good question to ask those who run Newcastle is –  since a striker was always the highest priority in this transfer window – how come we have a couple of days to go in the window  and haven’t signed a striker yet  – and we are basically down to a last minute panic buy.

Loic Remy looks like he’s going to Leicester City who are said to have had a £11.5M bid accepted by Chelsea – and it’s likely the French striker would rather go to a team fighting to win the Premier League than one  fighting to stay in the Premier League.

Bafe Gomis is not the man we need – it’s as easy as that – and if  we do get relegated put it down to the inability of Newcastle to bring in a top striker in this transfer window – when it was obvious what we needed a couple of months into the season.

In fact it was obvious in the summer when we balked at bringing in Charlie Austin.

How many more points do you think Newcastle would have this season if we had bought Charlie Austin last summer?

It will be very disappointing if  Bafe Gomis is the striker Newcastle end up signing in this transfer window.

Comments welcome.

    Aye I agree

Cisse’s offside count will pale in comparison with this lad, and the thought of seeing that pathetic celebration in our shirt is sickening. Shola with dreadlocks.

If we don’t get Doumbia and this knacker is the only striker we get……..championship here we come

Ed You’ve hit the nail on the head :”But if the news is to be believed”.It’s all pure speculation. Reporters & media men are having a field day. Hype & speculation sell newspapers. It was reported yesterday that Sequeria was in Newcastle having a medical. Did anyone actually see him here, there or where ever?

Seen you ranting on the last thread there, nobody listening as usual, well apart from me, I heard ya.

  • 8 JackButler // Jan 30, 2016 at 9:48 PM

Swansea said to offer the money they get for Go-miss for Dwight Gale, I’d prefer the palace man myself as the Swans are in deep trouble but they want this lad off their book asap

Only Two full days left now to make or break this Club. Must bring in striker with goals in him who can hit the ground running with only 15 games left.
Also must bring in suitable cover for LB & CB. Perhaps the lad already at Valencia Orban would fit the bill?

  • 12 Munster Mag // Jan 30, 2016 at 9:51 PM

And this was ANOTHER bloke that Carr scouted and we held off because of the fee. Hmm, a pattern is emerging. I wonder if he is is with Mondial ?

Gomis would certainly be behind Mitro, a fit Cisse & Perez in pecking order so why sign him. Surely we are considering spending more money to strengthen the squad. So where does Gomis come into the “strategy”?

  • 15 Jail for Ashley // Jan 30, 2016 at 9:52 PM

You ask how many points we have with and without Dummet, but you need to ask how many points would we have had with a specialised LB and Dummet on the bench ready to take his place if he put a shift in like who ever the LB was against Swansea, Watford, Palace, Leicester etc.

  • 16 Jail for Ashley // Jan 30, 2016 at 9:55 PM

I strongly disagree on needing LB cover, we already have it, what we need is a specialised LB to play at LB.

  • 17 Munster Mag // Jan 30, 2016 at 9:55 PM

I wouldnt be quite as down on Gomis as others. He has pace and strength and a few goals from him might help loads. 4 goals that won 4 games would make him a bit of a hero. Interesting chat with Ando on irish radio earloier. was talking about Mitro and seemed really surprised that we should have put so much store in him. Never ever scored more than a goal in a game last season adn couldnt be considered prolific. I like Nitro, but as Ando said, we cant really consider this guy a good finisher and we have probably seen enough of him to say that now. Lets move mountains for Doumbia I say. I dont think Remy would have done much damage for us . I dont think he looks the athlete he was.

If we are after Gomis I shudder he’s a poor player. If true it casts doubt on the hierarchy at SJP and their player assessments.
It just surely cannot be true.

    Nope Juan !

  • 20 JackButler // Jan 30, 2016 at 9:56 PM

I don’t think he is with Mondial sports, his agent is Italian, Francesco something-or-other, i did check as the pattern is alarming to say the least

  • 21 expatmag // Jan 30, 2016 at 9:58 PM

Yes TUFF…… have definitely lost the plot……lol

  • 22 TomaKaThor // Jan 30, 2016 at 9:59 PM

Another of Carrs pet projects, I hope we get the guy from Roma I have never seen play over Gomis

  • 23 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 30, 2016 at 10:00 PM

OK JFA perhaps mis use of words but at moment we are running on empty in both departments with no flexibility for further injuries/ suspensions which inevitably we will get shortly after the window shuts if we don’t address it.

  • 24 toon kk // Jan 30, 2016 at 10:02 PM

We’re NUFC Gomis fits our budget, scouting and is the type of player we usually go for, that’s why we struggle to compete with other clubs.

I quoted the piece as was. Cut and pasted. Why would I emphasise? It speaks for itself. “Can” and “could”. The piece included, “University College London researchers found a 3.6% decline in mental reasoning in women and men aged 45-49”. You don’t mention that bit. Put that in the context of “can” and “could”.

Churchill, Sir Alex, Einstein, Benn, even David Pleat. None of them was at the top of their game jn the 70s. Far from it. David Pleat. Do me a favour. Ian thinks he proves his case because David Pleat is now doing valuable work for Spurs academy.

Because I’m arguing that your mental faculties deteriorste as you get older, you accuse me of arguing black is white. You’ve argued every bit of the way so what are you doing?

Give me one good example of anyone at the height of their powers in their 70s and I’ll give you hundreds who are well on the wane – or even dead.

I’m not saying old folk don’t have anything to offer or can’t make a valuable contribution. But their powers are undoubtedly on the decline and can often be even suspect. It’s often why they’re put out to grass. Are you saying your body deteriorates but your brain doesn’t? Even if you were right, you still need a fit and energetic body to work to your best.

    Couldn’t agree more !

  • 27 JackButler // Jan 30, 2016 at 10:03 PM

If Carr gets his way on this one, with the ever growing list of his failures surely his time must be coming to an end with this club? as how much rubbish can one man pinpoint before he sacked?

  • 28 Jail for Ashley // Jan 30, 2016 at 10:05 PM

    Hasta mañana mis amigos !

Another concern of mine is none of the dross seems to be getting moved out. Only Williamson out of the door so far & possibly Tiote. Where is He at present ?going through Suez Canal on a ship in a crate bound for Shanghai?
All gone very quiet on that score. His £5/8M or whatever could come in very handy

  • 30 toon kk // Jan 30, 2016 at 10:07 PM

The bottom line is we need a goal scorer, if we don’t get one we will go down.
If Gomis comes and gets 6 goals it may be enough to keep us up.
    Better Gomis than no one.

Sometimes the best laid plans are thwarted regardless of how large the amount of money your prepared to spend. Of course the Newcastle hierarchy have only themselves to blame by not spending money every year for the last 7 or more years. So just because Ashley thinks he can catch up on quality by chucking wads of cash at players and those clubs will fall over themselves selling their best players to us – then the results show we are where we are. Let’s just hope in the two days left we get a break and at least sign a decent defender and striker.

  • 32 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 30, 2016 at 10:11 PM

What worries me Jack is that Gomis was on his wish list before he went to Swansea. He missed out on him then. Does he feel he has to justify himself by getting him this time. I really hope not but he has a habit of revisiting players time & time again even if circumstances have changed for the worse.

On SSN after WBA’s cuptie , Pulis is now speaking with an air of resignation that indicates he knows Berahino is down the road , whether to us or not is another question.

Newcastle target Guilherme Siqueira is on the verge of joining Valencia, reports AS.
Atleti full-back Siqueira had seemingly been set for Newcastle, but he is now one step away from becoming a Valencia player.
The Brazilian has already passed a medical at Valencia and is set to join the Mestalla club on a loan deal, while Valencia will have an option to secure his services on a permanent basis in the future.
The deal could be finalised on Sunday.
