Newcastle Make Club Record £21M Bid For Saido Berahino

3:10 pm, Sunday, January 31st, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 343 Comments

It doesn’t look like Newcastle are waiting for tomorrow to come before they make their bid for Saido Berahino, with Sky Sports reporting that Newcastle have just bid a whopping £21M for the England U21 International.

Don’t be surprised if this first bid from Newcastle is turned down – the real question is how high are Newcastle willing to go to try to get their man?

saido berahino

Saido Berahino – Newcastle launch £21M record bid

And Newcastle will be paying cash up front – unlike Spurs if they come in with a bid – it will be via installments.

By coming in now with about 32 hours left in the window Newcastle have given West Brom time to get in a new striker – like Jordan Rhodes for example from Blackburn.

This is a good well thought out move by Newcastle.

It’s also obvious the powers that be at Newcastle are really worried about relegation and they are going all out like there is no tomorrow.

If we get relegated there may be no tomorrow.

🙂

If Newcastle somehow get a bid accepted for Saido, it will be the most Newcastle have ever paid our for a player, beating the £17M we paid Real Madrid for Michael Owen in the summer of 2005.

It will also bring the spending this month to a whopping £50M – and an enormous £102M since last season.

    Jack

It’s been thoroughly reported in the papers and television that he wants to go to Spurs.

  • 2 JackButler // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:12 PM

A cash bid will blow just about every other club out of contention, Spurs are renowned for signing everyone on what amounts to HP.

Money is king in this game and I can’t see WBA turning that bid down for a player who isn’t playing for them and has eighteen months left on his contract

  • 3 shaun83 // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:13 PM

From last thread – I was annoyed at selling Carroll, not because $35m wasn’t enough but because it was on the last day of the window, even if we wanted to spend the money we couldn’t! Similar issue with WBA, what’s the point in selling now unless they think value is going to drop over next six months, looks to be enough interest for that not to be the case. Hope I’m wrong though 🙂

It’s also been reported that we have three bids turned down for the lad but the WBA chairman has also said that they have not received a single bid for the lad up until this weekend. What’s reported in the press has to be taken with a pinch of salt especially during the transfer window as NUFC alone have been link with around 100 players.

  • 6 jazzyp // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:16 PM

To bid for a player, They must have had positive feedback from the player-Agent that he wants to come to Nufc.

I am really gobsmacked that Ashley is spending this sort of money. Talk about assembling a quality team…..Hopefully not to late to stop us going down

  • 7 Jail for Ashley // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:17 PM

Protecting his investment or getting serious about wanting to win something, would be absolutely fantastic if it was the latter !

far to close to the owen saga for my liking. he doesnt want to come and with his petulant nature i can see this going horribly wrong if he signs

  • 9 Novocastrian66 // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:17 PM

£21m is a strange offer, perhaps WBA have named their price and Newcastle have met it.

  • 10 Slank // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:18 PM

    Jack @ 2

As I said in an earlier posting that ‘money talks’ and WBA know they have an unhappy player who will be on a free in no time at all.

Also, the player will probably get paid quite a bit more with us.

The Mail is reporting that the 22 year-old England U21 International Saido Berahino has made it clear that he would like to join Newcastle this month, but it´s all still dependent on West Brom Chairman Jeremy Peace as it looks like he wants to get as high a fee as possible for the want away star – and maybe willing to wait for the summer to get that massive fee

    Slank
Documented he want’s to come here as well pal. Happy days ahead hopefully

  • 19 West Lancs Geordie // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:22 PM

It’s an identical scenario to Carroll. The WBA chairman thinks he has enough points in the bag to survive but you never know. We just survived that season by the skin of our teeth.
Need to tweek the 25 man squad now. As things stand with no further departures after Willo,Thauvin & Tiote (if he has in fact gone) & Bigi at Coventry on loan. Need to deregister Good. That’s assuming Obertan, Riviere, Marvaux & Gouffy stay

  • 20 Jail for Ashley // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:22 PM

    SUTTY,
Unfortunately after eight years of putting up with sh!te I am still sceptical that this is only to protect what is a potential £270M windfall coming his way !

  • 21 Slank // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:22 PM

    Jack @ 5

I loved your comments about our three bids being reported but then you go on to say that what’s being reported should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Classic, but I’m sure it wasn’t how you wanted to say it.

His price would plummet come the summer, I’d be amazed if anyone offers the same amount then as we are reported to be offering today, look at Austin

  • 23 dannitoon // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:23 PM

Think it’ll take £25m.. ffs I hope it’s not too late.. could be the quickest fire sale of players in the history of football if we get relegated….

  • 27 JackButler // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:25 PM

    Slank

I meant when the likes of the Star, the Sun etc etc report they can be taken with a pinch of salt, but when it’s reported by the likes of Sky and they quote the exact amount and the fact that it’s a cash bid, it has far more substance to it.

  • 28 VanToonMan // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:25 PM

Apparently WBA have said throughout that he is not for sale so I don’t understand why we have bid and made it so public. Could it just be to show the fans that we tried?

  • 36 Slank // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:28 PM

    Jack & Jazzyp

Don’t get me wrong as I think he will be a great signing.

And all this talk about him being a bit difficult I’m not duly concerned as leaving WBA will be for him leaving a bit of a nightmare behind and a new opportunity to show what he can do to get a place in the England team as I’m sure Townsend and Shelvey are of the same mind.

  • 37 SA Toon // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:29 PM

It’s hard to set a value for a player like Berahino. While anything over £20m is over the odds from a WBA perspective (with only 18 months to go on his contract), from a NUFC perspective it is probably good value. If he can be the difference between going down and climbing up the table with better seasons to come, it makes good business sense to pay what it takes to get him on sides. I’ve gotta say, despite all the flak he has picked up over the past few years, it see,s to me that MA is showing some serious ambition at the moment.

  • 38 VanToonMan // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:29 PM

I’m hoping and trying to stay positive that it’s because we have been informed by WBA and/or Berahino’s reps that this bid will be accepted. Obviously don’t want to get hopes though lol

Why oh why didn’t he spend like this 6 months ago and get the three or four missing pieces of the jigsaw in then. It would have saved all his uncertainty & we’d have probably been pushing for a Euro place now. Still doesn’t make survival a certainty as new players have to gel & only 15 matches to do it in. As we know every player has his price.10 to 12 teams out of the PL could bid for Bera, So I don’t believe him not wanting to sell to a relegation rival has any relevance.

Saido alone wont keep WBA up and accepting the bid now will allow Wba to reinvest in the squad before its to late

my take on this offer is,, NUFC have got one striker in, the guy from the CSAK, so they will not be held to ransom, What i think WBA chairman was hoping was that we had no one in and they could nae there price. NUFC are in some kind of driving seat right now, the price is high given his contract legnth, but given that he can name his own salary in 12 month and WBA get nothing, this is the best offer they will get for the kid, we are only going so high because he would not choose us if he had free choice, if we get him and he can do well, the future England CF is always worth a fortune, and it between him and Kane..

  • 67 jazzyp // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:44 PM

Its nice to have that option tho mate rather than looking at the bench and picking the best out of a bad bunch.

Things are at present looking positive for a change but I still believe a lot of work is needed in the summer, Due to all the players contracts that are up.

Hopefully come summer big money can be spent on the defence, And at that we should shape up to be a top team in the PL rather than fighting relegation every season

  • 68 pawl250 // Jan 31, 2016 at 3:44 PM

For me Townsend wouldn’t make the team assuming we play 4-4-2

    ————– Elliot
    Janmaat – Mbemba – Coloccini – Dummett
    Sissoko – Shelvey – Tiote – Wijnaldum
    ——— Doumbia – Berahino

Darlow, STaylor, Saviet, Colback, Townsend Perez, Mitrovic

Just need to sort defence. Young rb for back up and a decent left back for starters. Dummett moved as back up Cb.

Think if the bid fails, I would take a gamble on Rhodes for 10m. About time someone does.

    Angels
I’ve responded more fully a few posts back to your fanciful claim that your argument is “nuanced” and to your exposition of logical reasoning – as if providing that exposition proves you are the master.

This is very simple. I’m saying ageing affects mental and physical performance. When you reach your seventies, mental powers deteriorate, memory wanes, decision making skills become increasingly impaired. The science supports that.

If you’re disagreeing with me, then surely you’re saying that never happens? That alzheimers or dementia, even the early stages, could not be affecting Carr’s decision making ability? No chance.

Your reasoning is that any person, no matter what age, could make the mistakes Carr has made. I’ve never disagreed with that. Of course, there are other poor performers out there. Carr might have made those same mistakes in his 40s, improved in his fifties, and early sixties, but dropped back again in his late sixties and seventies. Why not? The science supports it. We die in our seventies and eighties, and usually we gradually deteriorate up to the time of death. We don’t just deteriorate physically. Our brains get smaller. We lose millions of brain cells every day and our memory becomes impaired, some people’s more than others.

I’ve simply criticised Carr’s performance. His performance would indicate a man who is “past it”, no longer at the top of his game. Who knows, possibly even the early onset of alzheimers?

Of course, if you think Carr’s performance has been good, you’re not going to agree with that. But that’s not the point. You seem to be denying that it’s even a possibility. That I can’t possibly be right.

You gave the Churchill example. All that did was support my point. It shows Churchill held high office at a grand old age. However, it says nothing about his performance at that time. When you look at his performance at that time, you see he performed poorly, and not just in comparison to his war time leadership. So you scored a clear own goal with that one.

We had all this stand off with Levy over townsend, So hopefully negotiations continue and Nufc get the outcome they are after.

I think it will take 25 plus mill to seal the deal. A lot of money for a player who has only really had one good season

  • 99 Big Pappa Cissé // Jan 31, 2016 at 4:15 PM

Would be great if we could pull it off . Don’t see it happening though somehow but I will keep my fingers crossed . I get the feeling we have brought in Doumbia because of the unlikelihood of this transfer .

We have seen that if you know a player can do it in the PL and is relatively young £20-25 million is nothing for a player that could potentially be at the club 10 years . Plus he is only going to get better as he matures .

Still think we desperately need a new LB which looks likely however we are still taking a huge gamble not looking for a CB as we are one injury away from a crisis .

Team to keep us in the PL and push on next year :

    ——————————–Elliot—————————

    –Janmaat——–M’bemba——–Collocini——–LB?–

    ——————————Shelvey————————-

    —Sissoko—————-Wijnaldum———Townsend–

21m is a lot with which they could considerably strengthen.

I’d also like a pop at pulis . stop going on about bera as if he’s part of your team and he just has to get his head right etc. You are a poor manager who falls out with your best player. Yes there is too much player power these days, but no one talks about managers who act above their station. No manager is bigger than their club.

Berahino hasn’t got a bad attitude. He’s a young kid who made a daft comment on Twitter who happens to have a manager renowned for holding a grudge.

Would anyone else be motivated to work at 100% in training if you knew you wouldn’t be playing much.

Heard plenty of players and coaches on radio the last few days who’ve worked with him say he has a very Google attitude.

West brom let him down….dragging their heels, rarely playing him even though he scores and then not accepting bids is just ridiculous really. Got to let him move on.

Even if we get 2-3 good years then he moves onto bigger things if we don’t kick on ourselves…worth it as we’d get our money back and have a quality player for years.

Don’t see why Carrs age is relevant. Plenty people still extremely sharp at that age, especially when my required to make split second/reaction decisions….he can take time to study a player and discuss it with others he works with.

Also why would he have dementia or Alzheimer’s just because he is old? It’s not standard that everyone of a certain age develops those conditions.

He’s made some good signings recently too, very few clubs have huge success rates in the transfer market. Remember he is only part of the board who decide on who’s signed.

  • 132 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 31, 2016 at 4:44 PM

    Mag @52
His wiki page says, “Aware that he was slowing down both physically and mentally, Churchill at last retired as prime minister in 1955 and was succeeded by Anthony Eden. He suffered another mild stroke in December 1956.”

I was probably aware of this but like many things at my age, forgotten it.

I didn’t cite Churchill’s final term in support of my argument. Angels did in support of his. Note the reason given for his resignation. “Aware that he was slowing down physically and mentally …”

Angels thinks it’s okay as long as Carr’s not a geriatric. I simply say that you don’t suddenly become a geriatric. You might suddenly be classed as one but you don’t suddenly become one.

With the Euro’s coming up and only a handful of spots in the England team he will need game time .

On things for sure if we do end up with a strike force of Berahino/Doumbia/Mitrovic/Perez then they will need to be at the top of their game if they want to stay in the starting 11 .

To clarify, Manx sent me a youtube link telling me what he thinks. Very funny it was too. That concluded the debate with him and that was the end of it for me. Nice to end on a laugh.

Later today Angels went to great lengths to respond and to cite the Toulmin Model of Argumentation, claiming that I fell foul of it and he followed it perfectly. And that’s all it was: a claim. It was the argument of Assertion applied to the Toulmin Model of Argumentation. You couldn’t make it up. He ducked out of the debate last night, only to reappear this morning.

£21m is already crazy money for Bera, cant see NUFC going any higher than that and I don’t blame them. Cant see how we can shoehorn all the players in to be honest. Gini is best at no.10 but if we play 442 then there is no no.10. Cant really see Bera and Doumbia working as a partnership, so Mitro really has to play with one or the other. To fit all three we would have to play 433, but that means no wingers so Townsend doesnt play. Anyway McClaren couldn’t complain about being short of options!

I hope Doumbia has an impact straight away. Surely this means Mitro will sit. He’s not ready for it yet. The Berahino news is interesting but it seems they’re not exactly jumping at the offer. They’ll try to push the price up by waiting for Spurs.

Yacht delivery crews tend to do long watches as you’re usually just two or three on board. My bad – the six hours on, six hours off wasn’t the Transat – that was a Plymouth to Bordeaux run with a two man crew. Usually do 4 on 4 off with two up but the skipper had insomnia. The Transat was 3 on 6 off as there were 3 of us. All solo watches

  • 191 Blackley and Brownlie // Jan 31, 2016 at 5:35 PM

    Transfer @ 132
We’re spending eye watering amounts. We’re doing it poorly IMO.

This is a massive gamble in a panic to avoid relegation. We are paying through the nose out of desperation.

Old Mr Carr has already wasted money (equivalent to smaller rival club’s complete budgets) on the likes Cabella and De Jong.

His decision making in the transfer market has got us in this position when many of us were sounding alarm bells in the summer. Moreover, he must’ve had a major say in the choice of our average manager, who’s name is not proving much of a draw to top players.

For all I know, old Mr Carr may be at the pinnacle of his career and may have never performed better. He may be a sound and safe pair of hands, who can make the astute, shrewd signings that we need to challenge for Europe. At a time of life when others are getting doddery, he may have the fitness of a young man travelling the necessary thousands of miles a month to optimise his great eye for talent.

Sorry to pish on the cornflakes and say this window is shaping up to be another dog’s breakfast. I will reserve final judgment until I see the new lads play.

I knew all old Blackley needed was time. He has his own rope. No doubt the last few days of interaction with him has fully illustrated he is indeed a winner of argument, not a prover of points. By winner I mean he is most persistent in derogation and derision. It should be painfully clear why we have inherited him. You will learn nothing from him but that he can sustain a deep family rift over a disagreement about the running of someone else’s commercial enterprise. And having tired one blog, he is at work here. Proof of his purpose lies in those who ally themselves to him, think about it. He’s not here to contribute he’s here to spoil.

Now you want to play the man @ 179, whilst doing the battered boxer routine, holding your hands up to the judges and declaring yourself the winner.

I’d prefer just to stick to the arguments and let others make their own minds up rather than insult you and claim victory.

  • 211 lochinvar // Jan 31, 2016 at 5:50 PM

    This about the money.
Have Stoke really made a bid ( they were only rumoured to be interested ) ? This might be a ploy even a rumour to drive the price towards the £24m that Pearce at West Brom wants – so that he doesn’t loose face himself ( his ego needs to be satisfied ) !
    According to SSN :
“Albion’s position remains unchanged, according to Sky sources: they do not want to sell Berahino and have ruled out letting him go for less than Peace’s valuation.” The clue is in that statement – it’s a negotiation on price or more like a game of poker – who blinks first ?
If we go to £24m will Spuds offer more ?
Either way nice work for his Agent who will want to seal the deal and end up with nowt.

Newcastle United have made a surprise enquiry about the availability of former Magpies defender Davide Santon.
Santon, who was with the North East club from 2011 to 2015 left the Premier League side at the end of last season, joining Inter Milan.
However, Santon has failed to make an impression at the Serie A club, where he also started his career before moving to Tyneside, and the Gazette report Newcastle are looking to bring back in the 6ft1 Italian.

I’m suggesting that old Mr Carr’s performance is extremely poor and it’s no surprise because his performance suggests he’s well past it. You might not agree with it but it’s a perfectly valid opinion to express on this blog. When others challenge that opinion, it’s perfectly valid for me to put forward reasoned arguments.

Angels suggests old people are no different to anyone else unless they’re a geriatric. Perhaps you can tell us when one can recognise the moment that an old person stops being simply an old person and becomes a geriatric? Does it necessarily happen overnight? Top of your game one minute, shuffling and doddery the next?

  • 225 Belfast // Jan 31, 2016 at 6:02 PM

Our sources also indicate Stoke have held significant talks with West Brom over a potential transfer for Berahino, but they don’t think they will succeed in their efforts to sign him.

Sky Sources are telling us this evening that Newcastle United are STILL favourites to sign Berahino.

With Tottenham also thought to be interested, this one could run until the 11pm deadline tomorrow evening…

@Jail: Doubt it, mate. GermanGeordie is still living in Germany and, as far as I know, has no links to Gloucester at all.

Just flashed up about Doumbia having medical. Are they blatantly allowed to make shit up or is he here?

  • 285 SUTTY1978 // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:03 PM

I think Doumbia might be lost in that hotel in Jesmond. Think that Swiss fella is still in there somewhere….

  • 304 Fostino // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:12 PM

It is highly unlikely West brom will sell to relagetion rivals toon…unless we make an offer they cannot refuse. West Bromwich are being clever. ..They know we are desparate…reject our bid now ..keep the Stoke offer on table…knowing we will bid again and they may even entice spurs into the bidding war. Worst case scanario they get to keep a goalscorer and ourselves and Stoke get nowt.

I think berahino offer in the 25 plus might do it and would be well worth it as we badly need it. Cisse..riverie..toney and mitro simply not anywhere near prolific enough. Doumbia a good back up. .he may have an impact similar to when cisse first arrived.

I have zero expectations that berahino will end up a toon player…club do t want to sell to us and more importantly the player don’t want to play for us either prob.

I hope Peace / WBA get stuck with Bera after all this arseing about, and he throws the mother of all strops, takes his ball and heads home on strike in a mega huff. He’ll then go on a huge mars bar and crisps binge, gain a couple of stones and basically become utterly useless and worth nowt to them.
    But I’m not bitter….

  • 309 SUTTY1978 // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:14 PM

Shirebrook, we’d be challenging the mackems for the oldest CB pairing because obviously captain Colo is undroppable!

  • 310 SuperShearer // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:14 PM

So help me out here. I’ve been out all day catching glimpses of rumours on Twitter but nothing official. Have we actually signed anyone? Is Doumbia here? Is Bera still on the radar or have WB told us and Stoke to take a long walk off a short peer?

    Input much appreciated / needed.

  • 311 Jail for Ashley // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:14 PM

In Internet slang, a troll (/?tro?l/, /?tr?l/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion,[3] often for their own amusement.

Who was that other WBA player who rocked up at QPR without a fee being agreed. Was chatting out his window Redknapp style with SSN. Ended up having to drive back home!

  • 315 JackButler // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:19 PM

So we are trying to sign a player that’s not for sale but who is in advanced talks with Stoke even though their offer has been turned down because he’s not for sale.

    Triffic

I’m afraid we are all in the dark as to what’s going on. Most likely scanario is thst we will have Doumbia confirmed early tomorrow or tonight. The berahino deal will go right down to the wire and I think West brom will end up selling to the highest bidder. ..who ever that ends up being. Spurs pulling out of Dembele and having the 12m townsand money would surely put them in prime position considering its the players preferred destination.

No Berahino and the 2 LB’s we were very close too have signed on else where going well.

  • 328 jimmysmith // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:24 PM

It still all paper talk. I believe we will sign Doumbia, but that’s only a loan, for a guy who has thus far failed in Serie A, plus Townsend and Shelvey, England fringe players, and some other relative unknown, to replace a very good player in Tiote apparently leaving. And we are third bottom with 15 games to go, and in real danger of losing our place at the big money table.

Ashley is trying to protect his investment certainly, but beyond that, I’m not yet convinced. Although yes, definitely opening my eyes wider to the possibility.

  • 329 ShirebrookToon // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:25 PM

Was funny to watch though. Bet he felt a bit of a tw@t turning back up at WBA the next day

  • 330 Fostino // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:26 PM

I just don’t understand this mentality of bidding a day before the window closes. Why not bid the first day with a realistic take it offer and move on quickly if it’s unsuccessful. I know it’s not my money but Pl survival is at stake here.

  • 331 SUTTY1978 // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:26 PM

Ah that was him, the old deadline day legend! WBrom always have players who want to get out as quickly as poss.
Does anyone think that Bera is really worth any more than £21m? I honestly thought he was worth about £20 last summer and would have dropped to about £12m by January. Cant understand them being unwilling to sell but barely playing him, seems weird…

  • 332 will die for the toon army // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:27 PM

Nothing is straight about Berahino. Its stupid high school talk.

  • 333 toon kk // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:28 PM

The Bernahino deal will go down to the wire and only if west brom get a offer they can’t refuse. Although he may not choose us over Stoke anyway.

  • 334 ShirebrookToon // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:29 PM

Think we will bang another bid in at 23 mil cash upfront take it or leave it. Wouldn’t pay anymore than that for bera and that’s a generous offer IMO

  • 337 colwell // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:30 PM

Surely with Riviere going out we must be bringing in 2 strikers? makes fcuk all sense knowing we are short up top to bring 1 in and send 1 out?

  • 338 Jail for Ashley // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:32 PM

He must have felt like a right tw@t, can’t imagine his team mates were too happy either.
    Jimmy,
Really can’t see the sense in the Saviet deal in place of Tiote, but it seems more people think it is a good move than don’t, so what do I know.

  • 339 firebug666 // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:34 PM

    jesper

Were we ever really in for them though? Paper talk and the web has a lot to answer for.

I think we ensure we have one in before letting one go, The squad is quite full now, not all will be registered to play.

  • 342 Slater // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:37 PM

JFA, yes he was at Everton, Hull then West Ham. Still managed to score in a very poor Hull side.

Never seen such an exciting end to a transfer window for Newcastle fans. Let’s just hope all of the rumours and moutings actually come off.

  • 343 Hail Wor Ashley // Jan 31, 2016 at 7:40 PM

Get Doumbia secured, then use the purported £20-25m for a LB and CB.

Steve Bruce remarked that Andrew Robertson would cost Derby double when asked about their rumoured £7m bid – put in £10m and see how it fares. Another option is Gibbs who I imagine could be got for around the same price. Please no mention of the craven Santon. Defensively one of the worst LB we’ve had and his attitude stunk – towards the end he was blatantly not trying, particularly in the final derby he played in. His saving grace was supposedly going forward, yet I don’t think he registered a single assist. A decent passer and comfy on the ball, that’s it.
