It doesn’t look like Newcastle are waiting for tomorrow to come before they make their bid for Saido Berahino, with Sky Sports reporting that Newcastle have just bid a whopping £21M for the England U21 International.
Don’t be surprised if this first bid from Newcastle is turned down – the real question is how high are Newcastle willing to go to try to get their man?
Saido Berahino – Newcastle launch £21M record bid
And Newcastle will be paying cash up front – unlike Spurs if they come in with a bid – it will be via installments.
By coming in now with about 32 hours left in the window Newcastle have given West Brom time to get in a new striker – like Jordan Rhodes for example from Blackburn.
This is a good well thought out move by Newcastle.
It’s also obvious the powers that be at Newcastle are really worried about relegation and they are going all out like there is no tomorrow.
If we get relegated there may be no tomorrow.
🙂
If Newcastle somehow get a bid accepted for Saido, it will be the most Newcastle have ever paid our for a player, beating the £17M we paid Real Madrid for Michael Owen in the summer of 2005.
It will also bring the spending this month to a whopping £50M – and an enormous £102M since last season.

Comment #323@Fostino – thanks buddy. That’s kind of what I had assumed, all lots of rumours and hearsay without any concrete info. And the waiting continues.

Comment #324I wouldn’t of minded us having a punt with Jelavic. Not getting many games at West Ham, always grabs a goal when we does play.

Comment #328It still all paper talk. I believe we will sign Doumbia, but that’s only a loan, for a guy who has thus far failed in Serie A, plus Townsend and Shelvey, England fringe players, and some other relative unknown, to replace a very good player in Tiote apparently leaving. And we are third bottom with 15 games to go, and in real danger of losing our place at the big money table.
Ashley is trying to protect his investment certainly, but beyond that, I’m not yet convinced. Although yes, definitely opening my eyes wider to the possibility.

Comment #330I just don’t understand this mentality of bidding a day before the window closes. Why not bid the first day with a realistic take it offer and move on quickly if it’s unsuccessful. I know it’s not my money but Pl survival is at stake here.

Comment #331Ah that was him, the old deadline day legend! WBrom always have players who want to get out as quickly as poss.
Does anyone think that Bera is really worth any more than £21m? I honestly thought he was worth about £20 last summer and would have dropped to about £12m by January. Cant understand them being unwilling to sell but barely playing him, seems weird…

Comment #333The Bernahino deal will go down to the wire and only if west brom get a offer they can’t refuse. Although he may not choose us over Stoke anyway.

Comment #334Think we will bang another bid in at 23 mil cash upfront take it or leave it. Wouldn’t pay anymore than that for bera and that’s a generous offer IMO

Comment #337Surely with Riviere going out we must be bringing in 2 strikers? makes fcuk all sense knowing we are short up top to bring 1 in and send 1 out?

Jimmy,
Really can’t see the sense in the Saviet deal in place of Tiote, but it seems more people think it is a good move than don’t, so what do I know.

Were we ever really in for them though? Paper talk and the web has a lot to answer for.

I think we ensure we have one in before letting one go, The squad is quite full now, not all will be registered to play.

Comment #342JFA, yes he was at Everton, Hull then West Ham. Still managed to score in a very poor Hull side.
Never seen such an exciting end to a transfer window for Newcastle fans. Let’s just hope all of the rumours and moutings actually come off.

Comment #343Get Doumbia secured, then use the purported £20-25m for a LB and CB.
Steve Bruce remarked that Andrew Robertson would cost Derby double when asked about their rumoured £7m bid – put in £10m and see how it fares. Another option is Gibbs who I imagine could be got for around the same price. Please no mention of the craven Santon. Defensively one of the worst LB we’ve had and his attitude stunk – towards the end he was blatantly not trying, particularly in the final derby he played in. His saving grace was supposedly going forward, yet I don’t think he registered a single assist. A decent passer and comfy on the ball, that’s it.
