Door Slams Shut On Newcastle Getting Berahino

10:15 am, Monday, February 1st, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 183 Comments

Sky Sports is reporting that Saido Berahino is not expected to leave West Brom today and if he did leave senior sources at West Brom are telling Sky Sports he certainly wouldn’t be sold to a club fighting relegation along with West Brom – such as Newcastle United.

Saido_Berahino_8886_(15632059695)

Saido Berahino – going nowhere today

Sky Sports News reporter Anton Toloui was reporting from the West Brom training ground today and he had this to say:

“Senior sources have been saying Berahino will not be leaving the club today.

“Some may be surprised by that as the striker has only started eight Premier League games this season and hasn’t scored a league goal since mid-October.”

“The club remain just seven points above the relegation zone and don’t want to take any risks by selling a player who scored 14 Premier League goals last season and especially to a relegation rival such as Newcastle United.”

“There is also a commercial reason in that they believe they can get just as much money for him in the summer, even though he only has 12 months left on his current deal.”

“And being deadline Day, they may struggle to get a replacement. West Brom insist he is going nowhere.”

Both Newcastle and Stoke were reported yesterday to have made £21M bids for Berahino, with Newcastle paying cool cash up front – but West Brom Chaiman Jeremy Peace turned the offers down.

But as we reported earlier today West Brom would be daft to let Berahino join Newcastle  with both clubs being in the relegation fray – and we play the Baggies this Saturday at home.

If we beat them we are probably just 4 points behind them.

What is very clear these days with Premier League clubs is their number one priority is to stay in the Premier League this season with that new three year £5.1B TV rights deal starting in June.

£21M isn’t much good to West Brom if they end up getting relegated in May and miss out on all that much bigger money from the Premier League TV rights.

We will not get Berahino today.

Comments welcome.

Peace is an absolute idiot. I agree with his sentiments about letting a player go so late in the window. But this is undermined by the fact he has not been playing him anyway. But he will not get anywhere near that amount of money for him after this window.

Blah Blah Blah, money talks then Berihinio walks.

How many times have fans heard he’s not for sale, that’s like a green light in some cases.

  • 8 Wayayman // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:22 AM

Just wondering why we want Berahino if we’ve signed Doumbia? Berahino isn’t Prem Lg fit, looks overweight and will take at least 3-4 weeks to get anywhere near where he should be. Same with Remy, and Gomis, please god no.
Can’t we just have Gibbs and Cahill please, Football God?

Now i have failed to know who Jeremy Pearce is? Not money hungry. What is he?

  • 10 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:24 AM

More brinkmanship. I say steer clear. Sogn doumbia, have another pop at remy on loan, and spend the bera money on a LB.

    Expat

2 good finishes, he took 2nd really well.
I wouldn’t be dissapointed if we didn’t get him as I think we’ve done decent buisness, however I’d love to get him.

Think he’s a cracking player who’ll get better and better, if we’ve got a chance we should do all we can to get him.

Why don’t we just chuck in rivi and marv so they’d have replacements.
tbh I’m more excited about doumbia anyways, proper goal machine and could end up being the signing of season

    REPOST

    lesh @ 13

I disagree with you, to a degree, about the squad’s needs have been apparent for some time. A left back and centre back would not have been my priority.

The results point to the fact that it is our strike force who are failing not our defence.

We have lost many games by a single goal margin. If we had scored a single goal we wouldn’t be in the precarious position we find ourselves today.

To me, the key position was the midfield, left wing and centre forward in that order of priority. As hard as Colback and Anita work they don’t have the vision and forward passing ability that Cabaye had. Playing Gini on the left meant that he drifted into his natural number 10 role leaving our left back exposed. Shelvey and Townsend should readdress this team imbalance and weakness.

As regards Mitrovic I’m not too sure as centre forwards thrive on service and it would not be totally accurate to say he hasn’t had that service as Gini has scored most, if not all, his goals in the six yard box so there is service there.

But I agree with you that we will need a centre back as I suspect that this may be Colo’s last season.

  • 23 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:35 AM

    Op

I suppose i meant “some” of the money. I have no particular player in mind, but if we have up to 25m lying around, then surely there are a couple of decent LBs looking for regular football.

  • 24 colwell // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:35 AM

With Doumbia coming in if we had signed a LB and CB this would be one of our best ever windows.

We have so much pace within the team now something we have missed so much, just at the other end we have conceded far too many. Signing attacking players is greatly needed but so are defenders or I feel we are still going down.

  • 25 Mister Tuff // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:36 AM

Sky News have just shown pics of Berahino turning up in the last half hour for training at West Brom.
So he’s not secretely squirreled away for a medical.
Looks increasingly unlikely that he will become a Toon player.

  • 26 Take a Chancel on me // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:36 AM

  • 27 toon kk // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:38 AM

Our squad has had no cutting edge in front of goal since Remy left, of course striker’s are a priority.

  • 28 AncientC // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:38 AM

Here is hoping that the fact the club have not announced the signing of Doumbia, is because they do not want to make multiple announcements when they can announce 2 or 3 signings at once.

  • 29 mad-serb // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:39 AM

Well Pearce should be sent to the loony bin if he thinks he going to get close to 25 million in the summer with 12 months left on his contract.

He will going tonight thats my predictions and if not I going to put something on WBA to get relegated and lmao at Pearce.

  • 30 optimistic prime // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:41 AM

    Ycmiu

If we’re after a loan I think we’re after Willems in the summer. Personally I’d be worried about screwing with the back 4 at this point in time, we don’t have the time to let them gel. They’re sorta settled, cover would be nice but unless it’s a real quality player I’d give it a miss until summer.

  • 31 AncientC // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:42 AM

Pulis has not been playing Berahino this season, presumably to get WBA used to playing without him. West Brom have got themselves into a position where they are not reliant on Berahino, it would be a strange move to keep him if they can get over £20 million.

The whole story of him not wanting to sell to a relefgation rival is a load of bs. He gets 20 plus million to make the necessary additions he needs and in cash.

Pearce was talking about it the other day with a few of the pundits and actually bigged up the stats etc part of the game.

It was a very interesting conversation and it seems they are very impressed how acurate some of the stats etc are and how they can be used or looked at as a reference book on players.

  • 44 Slank // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:54 AM

The WBA response is very odd and illogical.

If Berahino was playing very game and scoring regularly which was making the difference between their current position and being in the bottom three then I could accept that but he isn’t playing every game and isn’t scoring.

It looks like they are going to play the Charlie Austin card. Hang out for the highest bid and when none materialise and time is running out sell him for less than a quarter of their initial valuation.

    With regard to Doumbia
If you think back to the M’Bemba transfer although he had played in Belgium he had to go to Paris for a visa because he was of African (Congolese) origin.
Seydou is Ivorian and NUFC never announce a player until they have dotted all the “I”‘s and crossed all the “T”‘s

  • 49 AncientC // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:56 AM

I do not think playing hard to get is going to attain a release clause being paid for Gomis.

If Swansea had any sense, they would offer Gomis out of the club for free if they get no offers. Complete waste of £70k a week.

  • 56 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 1, 2016 at 11:10 AM

WBA, a club not panicking in desperation in the transfer market. What would they do with £25m to get ahead of the game and keep distance between us and them. Go on a desperate spending spree, paying over the odds for flawed talent with questionable attitude? No sensible, well run club would do that.

  • 57 Mister Tuff // Feb 1, 2016 at 11:11 AM

Ref the Mbemba signing – the club announced a week before he was officially an NUFC player that an agreement had been reached — pending visa/work permit.
Strange that they are not doing the same with Doumbia

  • 58 optimistic prime // Feb 1, 2016 at 11:15 AM

Maybe they haven’t announced Doumbia because they’re holding out for someone else, if they get their no1 maybe Doumbia is sent packing.

Scratch that, it would require foward thinking and planning at a level Charnley doesn’t have.

OP…keeping a clean sheet would go along way!

We are third from the bottom when it comes to leaking goals. You would have to be scoring quite alot of goals to move out of the bottom three with our leaking rate.

A CB and a FW should have been the first players through the door and then everyone else.

  • 61 Belfast // Feb 1, 2016 at 11:16 AM

Well hardly surprising far too late in the day. I don’t think the money matters now. It’s about not having the time to reinvest the money and also not wanting to sell to a relegation rival.

You’d all be crying your eyes out if we sold Wini today to Swansea for example, so you can definitely see where they’re coming from.

If West Brom were a well run club, they would have foreseen the current Berahino scenario coming.

Berahino is not integral to West Brom anymore, why have West Brom not got their own transfers already lined up, knowing full well there was a strong possibility that Berhaino could be on the move.

If we were to pay £24 million for Berahino up front, West Brom could in theory spend double that – as they do not necessarily have to pay up front for players they bring in.

  • 70 Ron Knee // Feb 1, 2016 at 11:21 AM

Potentially a good signing for Newcastle that one.

Seydou Doumbia is a powerful striker and, although he only managed two goals for Roma, he has banged them in for fun in the past.

He got 66 league goals in two spells at CSKA Moscow and 50 in an impressive 64 games for Swiss Super League side BSC Young Boys.

The ability is there, can Steve McCLaren get the best out of him?

Belfast…I think any fan of WBA knows they will lose him sooner or later.

…but it’s never an easy choice to make. Maybe Pearce is playing hard ball to get as much money as possible and maybe we left it just a little to late for Pearce to be able to reinvest the money!

Berahino has not been so vital to them this season and £21M could go along way to securing their PL status.

The January window is useful for clubs who are in a pickle and prepared to pay over the odds, and for other clubs to take advantage if it’s to their benefit. A well run club would’ve prepared well gor the sradon ahead, making minor tweaks in January, if need be. Why not keep Berahino until the summer? See the season out. What’s spoiling for them?

Doumbia will need a GBE from the FA (Governing Body Endorsement) then he can get his work visa.
Unfortunately the FA Panel who decide these matters only sits once a week or so.
Probable that no announcement has been made so far as it may have been a busy weekend.
Drawing parallels with Mbemba – club announced on 22.7.15 that they had reached agreement pending work permit – the FA panel were not sitting until 30.7.15.

Ridiculous lack of planning by charnley and carr.
MA is very loyal to his appointees but those 2 have failed us spectacularly. It seems we only get better players when Ash has to personally involve himself which is a damning indictment of Charnley’s capabilities or lack thereof.

We play counter attacking football we never play on the front foot which invites pressure on our defence, we also had a midfield that are instructed to never pass forward and stand on our CBs toes

That is not the defenders fault it’s the team set up we could have the worlds best defenders and they would still leak goals if we play like that

But if we decide that we can hold our own we will score more and conced less because we stop the opponents attacking

As for City they look to control the field every game they play the games they struggle in are the ones their opponents attack them rather than look to soak up their pressure

Blackley and Brownlie – Fairly simple, West Brom are likely to get more money now than in the summer. Berahino isn’t making much of a difference for West Brom.

West Brom could add in this window and the next one, if they were thinking ahead of how to use the money from Berahino’s sale. It is better to have money to spend in two windows, rather than one.

    Ancient
January seems to be the month for misfits. I’m not convinced that WBA will get any less in the summer. But they must survive to enjoy the land of milk and honey. Why wouldn’t they keep a £25m player, even if he sits on the bench. WBA would be daft to sell IMO. Not every club is as badly run as ours. It seems we can’t get the best of the misfits and so we might get second, third or fourth choices. If all else fails, Carr knows a player called Remy.

  • 110 Toon_Tom // Feb 1, 2016 at 11:59 AM

Doumbia has been a “done deal subject to medical” for over 24hrs – not exactly breaking news.

He has had the medical – the hold up is the politics behind it.

Plus I think they want proof he isn’t actually 89 yrs old.

he looks the same age as Mandella did before he snuffed it.

cracking signing, bangs them in, excellent goal rate (not as prolific for roma) but will do job for us.

Over the moon with Doumbia and Shelvey this window – Townsend is a great addition and Savait could come good or provide decent cover.

Berahino in tonight would be amazing – get Santon on loan for 6months and throw some money at chelsea for Cahill and/or Remy.

John Terry is clearly miffed so go for him 😉

Soccer Sauce are just as much tosh as other ITKs, they just have a better strike rate, time their posts better and choose their words more carefully to give them plausible deniability. Admittedly they tend to read the landscape a little better than most, but much like fund managers that try to beat the markets, somebody is bound to just like somebody is bound to fail miserably, doesn’t mean they have knowledge others don’t.

Newcastle United target, Saido Berahino, has just departed the West Brom training ground before training has even finished.

Amid rumours that Newcastle have submitted a second bid after the rejection of their initial £21m offer, various outlets are reporting that West Brom have finally given in to the striker’s wantaway demands.

Sky Sports have confirmed on their Twitter account that Berahino has now left the training ground early (before training has even finished) and have speculated that he could be on his way to his next club. Whether that is Newcastle remains to be seen…

SSN love a headline story to keep them ticking over on deadline day so expect more and more conjecture. Just as in Carroll saga we may be involved all day – has Ashley still got that helicopter?

Not paying any attention to Peace’s statement as if the price is right he will sell today rather than risk a summer sale. Rest of talk about relegation rivals may be true but if Berahino isn’t playing a regular role for WBA how much a factor is this? Swansea didn’t concern themselves with that aspect where Shelvey was concerned.

Perhaps Peace is leaving it until late to get best possible fee but not have to then spend ( sound familiar?). Then again may be Pulis is off somewhere trying to sort out a replacement or has he spat his dummy out as he did at Palace?

Plot thickens but for once if we have Doumia and Cisse is still here we aren’t absolutely desperate so surely won’t go to £30 M they are after.

  • 162 VanBasten // Feb 1, 2016 at 12:43 PM

Paying ?£24million (€31.5million) for Saido Berahino is NUTS!!! That kind of money could buy you the best players in almost any of the other non-EPL clubs in the world with the exception of the big giants like Bayern, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Though Berahino is still young, he doesn’t have a goal scoring record that would justify this price tag. Also his character is questionable. This seems purely like a panic buy and also the fact that he is British. I’m afraid it could be another bad record purchase similar to when Liverpool bought Andy Carrol from us.

For that kind of money, you could easily scoop up players like: Michy Batshuayi ,Alexandre Lacazette. and possiblty also Paul Dybala (if he wanted to come).

Personally, I would take this money and buy Breel- Donald Embolo of FC Basel (18 years old) and then buy a world class left back instead. With Doumbia also in the books most likely, we will be more than covered on the striker front with these two.
