Newcastle Fail In Attempt To Sign Former Left-Back

5:50 pm, Monday, February 1st, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 367 Comments

Newcastle are trying to get a left-back in before the transfer window closes in less than six hours time – and their pursuit of our former left-back Jose Enrique, whose career has completely stalled at Liverpool, is said to have broken down.

Jose left Newcastle for Liverpool in the summer of 2011, but he has been left in the wilderness at Liverpool and appeared for them only 20 times over the last three seasons.

Jose Enrique – while at Newcastle

The 30-year-old Spanish full-back had a successful career at Newcastle after he was signed by Sam Allardyce back in the summer of 2007 and he spent four good years at Newcastle playing 129 times for us with one goal and helped us get promoted back to the Premier League in 2010.

However Sky Sports is reporting it looks like the talks have broken down with the player unable to agree terms with Newcastle.

Jose Enrique – in Liverpool colors

Jose Enrique will become a free agent in the summer when his contract at Liverpool finally runs out and the news from other sources is that he wanted a longer contract than Newcastle were willing to offer.

Wonder why we couldn’t bring him in on loan?

Hope we get a replacement for Jonjo…he’s getting a bit tiresome now like and even more surprised anyones biting.

All in all a decent window…I just hope no more of our defence pick up any injuries otherwise we’re knackered and will be relying on emergency transfers from the Championship as replacements

    Good planning Penfold…well done mate…10/10

Older and slower now. Too late for Enreekie.

Johnny Wilkinson in at Newcastle, can he play left back?

  • 7 mattyNUFC // Feb 1, 2016 at 5:54 PM

the money is there to be spent. just a shame we seem to have zero priorities

  • 8 Tsunki // Feb 1, 2016 at 5:54 PM

He thought he was too good for us, and found out he wasn’t good enough for Liverpool. Tough break.

  • 9 Big Pappa Cissé // Feb 1, 2016 at 5:54 PM

Not convinced we will bring anyone else in this window which is crazy considering our PL survival hinges on it but Ashley is the supposedly smart billionaire not me .

I still think we desperately need a LB as Dummet just isn’t good enough . Also we are one CB injury away from another Crisis especially since Williamson has now left . You would have thought with one of the worst defensive records in the PL we would have bought some defenders FFS .

Having said that we should be able to stay up with our current players and my team would be :

    ——————————Elliot——————————-

    –Janmaat——-M’bemba——-Collocini——-Dummet–

    –Sissoko———-Gini———–Shelvey——Townsend–

    ——————-Mitrovic——–Doumbia——————-

Got a feeling Berahino move will go down to the wire.

I think West Brom know they need to sell now as he hasn’t started in the league for them since October and with only 18 months on his contract his value will drop in the summer, especially with even less playing time.

Think West brom will take the 24mil on the table, just making us wait to see if anyone else stumps up more cash.

Jose was the best LB i have seen in a toon shirt. Ok, he is 30 now, but he is a class act and would surely give us something. Hope we go back in for him. Still 5 hours and change to go.

Quite happy to pickup his £70k a week for doing nothing. Secured the big money contract and put his slippers on.

There should be a law passed allowing clubs to sack players with no compensatory payout, who don’t hold their side of the bargain. Any other high-paid profession, if you turn up and act unprofessional and half-arse your job, you won’t last long.

    I hope so to.
Each of those players failed for various reasons. Ferreyra and Rossi hardly if ever kicked a ball, so I would guess the respective managers just didn’t fancy them.
LDJ played out of position in a team that was mentally defeated. Nachos leg fell off, and i think Ireland was injured for his spell too. We haven’t had a lot of luck.

Maybe Doumbia was signed because we can’t get Berihinio bit I won’t stop believing he’s coming until 9/10ish, something strange is going on!

Sky have said NUFC have had no responce from a 21m bid, I don’t beleive that. Stoke have said how much they’ll pay and have aparantly held some sort of talks. Then there was rumours of 24m and Saido went home early.

If we’ve had no responce and we’ve said we wanted 2 strikers where are the links to other strikers? Whys it so quiet, why haven’t we contacted WBA or Peace directly?

Conspuracy theory. Ashley gets on with the spurs hireacrchy. a gentlemens agreement is struck over a few cigars after signing townsand that we would do their betting for them. Win win for both parties. We look like we’re willing to spend big bucks for a young English striker. Spurs are on standby to match our offer if West brom decide to sell putting sours in the power position and deflecting any unnecessary media coverage from their very successful season.

Daily Mail reporting we have increased our bid for Berahino to £24 Million!!

  • 78 Our Toon // Feb 1, 2016 at 6:37 PM

12m bid for Remy, sounds like bs to me. We are done people, glad I stayed away for the day. Just got home to find out we’ve got no further than we did yesterday. To little to late and no further CB’S which is just mind boggling.

Someone turn the lights off because all you’ll get now is big hairy ball sacks and as predicted yesterday….A statement of we tried but couldn’t get Berahino over the line.

As for Perez signing a new deal…..nice means we can charge more for him in the summer because contracts aren’t worth the paper they are printed on. Anyway I’ll let the hopers carry on hoping that something will happen!!

Talksport had that journo on yesterday and he was claiming he was told the bid was actually 24m. If we really wanted him then we’d bid 30m and get it over and done with as staying up is worth 100m at least!! Pays for itself.

  • 84 West Lancs Geordie // Feb 1, 2016 at 6:43 PM

Matty I have also stated several times that Remy is a mercenary. He just wants to boost his Euro chances to play for France. I think Berahino deal is dead in the water for Toon. Levy is going to come in with £30 M bid late on. Only an hour to London from Birmingham. We would need Cashley’s helicopter. Too much if we are going to increase above present alleged offer. Our options are sadly running out. Hope we don’t make a desperate silly buy.

I’m with you mate, I don’t want Remy, Yes he could do a job (maybe) but over the past few years our club has lost enough of it’s pride, I don’t see any need to go cap in hand to a money grabbing tw@ like Remy.

Still would rather have signed a LB than going for a second striker after Doumbia. Yes we need options, but we still have to keep a little faith in Mitro and Perez. I do think that,if remy did sign, he would do a job for us as he is suited to our style of play, but i am now not that bothered if our forward line is set for the rest of the season. I really, REALLY wish we would sign a defender of some sort.

  • 92 GeordieTwo // Feb 1, 2016 at 6:53 PM

That must make it true then of it was on dealing day!!

It was reported by a journo being interviews yesterday that we’d bid 24m from sources close to the club, anyone listening between 8 and 9 would have heard it. It’s a rehashed story gained to try to get more traction and clicks on sites.

By all means believe it mate as you are well within your rights to do so. I could go on twitter now and say that I’ve just seen Jay Rodriguez in Newcastle and direct it at sky, they put it on the deadline feed!! That’s how reliable I think it is

  • 94 Nufc-Dom // Feb 1, 2016 at 6:55 PM

Nobody think we might try and sign that young Belgian striker from Marseille?

Just seen in the last hour or two that Marseille are in talks with Steven Fletcher and have had an offer for Odemwingie rejected. Seems a bit odd that they’d go in for two people unless they were looking to replace someone

A left back capable of dancing past players as he streaks up the wing and equally as capable of robbing the ball from wingers just as they’re about to cross.

We seriously need a LB, we are letting in 2 goals a game, we will be very fortunate to score three a game. As for Jibberish’s claim that if it wasn’t for three particular results our GD would be ok?? Take anyone’s three wordt results away and they’d probably have a half decent -GD for their league position.

We have a few more options and a bit more depth. I suppose it puts a few who haven’t cut it out of the frame for the run in. Gouffran, Rivierre, Cisse, Marv we hopefully won’t see again. I hope Tiote stays. In form, he’s a great option holding for Shelvey and Widjnalum.

A lot still rides on players who have put us in the bottom three though, and now four new guys who aren’t at all bankable, a coach who probably should have done more with what he’s had at his disposal, and still of course no specialist left back, or is that a little too pessimistic.

Shite Leroy Fer is going to Swansea :/ more strength to our relegation rivals. We need another ST and a LB and this window would have been perfect.

Still happy with the deals we’ve done so far. But we’re just an injury or two away from a crisis. Therefore those two more signings and we’re sorted. Then in the summer we can sprt out our CBs once Saylor is out of contract and Colo can finally be replaced as he will barely play in his final year.

Well at least for the first window in a long time you can see the board was targeting good players and going hard for them.

The problem has been that nobody wants to sell in the January window and a lot of players (like Lacazette) are reluctant to move before the Euros.

  • 214 Blofal // Feb 1, 2016 at 8:38 PM

A LB would have been good but we have Dummett, Colback, Haidara, Mbabu and Anita who can all do a job there. Granted most of them are injured at the moment.

Our target for the next window appears to be Willems. So it would have been good to get a loan player in for the rest of the season but we tried and it just didn’t happen. Enrique apparently wanted a long term contract which I think the club were right to refuse.

Well glad that we didnt get Gomis.

Very happy with two of the signings – Doumbia & Shelvey
    Happyish with Saviet
    Disappointed with Townsend
Disappointed we didn’t get a CB

    Overall it’s decent.

OP That does not always follow especially in what has been a very unpredictable season. Look where we have picked up points and the teams around us & just above who we have lost to. Lots of points lost late on – Chelsea Everton to name just two. Those 3 points could well come back to haunt us

It’s funny how folk on here grip a stat between their teeth and hang on like a Jack Russell with a rat to prove their particular bee in the bonnet.
In Williamson , Blackley’s and Jesper’s case it is our -16 goal difference proves our back 4 is rubbish.
I looked a bit closer and it is actually only down to 3 games.
    The 1 – 5 to Palace – a complete abberation
The 1 – 6 to Man City when Aguero scored 5 and Dummett was replaced by M’babu
The 0 – 3 to the Scum when Colo was sent off for an inoccuous shouder charge.
Take those 14 goals out of the equation and our goals diff is -2
The same as Liverpools and Chelsea’s

Why we need a new LB as well as a top CB is because our GD really is -16. Yes …it really is -16 and not -2
The bee in your bonnet just cannot do arithmetic.

Last season final GD – 23, season before -16, season before that -23.

IF has no effect on goal difference.

This is an incredibly stupid argument even by your standards Jeff

  • 229 optimistic prime // Feb 1, 2016 at 8:50 PM

    West

With the players Steeve has now we should easily get 5/6 points more than Norwich/Swansea. It would take a Carver like performance for that not to happen.

He’s got no excuse, he’ll get about 5 games then the bullet if he doesn’t sort it.

I fancy a away win at Everton, it’s our best chance in a long time. They’re very sloppy at the back at home, they should be tired from last week or so. Start with a high tempo straight at them and they’ll tire quickly, if we get a goal early and make them chase it’s over.

  • 230 JackButler // Feb 1, 2016 at 8:51 PM

With Doumbia signed the Berahino move is a lot easier to deal with, I’d love to see him here but WBA have dug their heels in are will not budge, which will cost them long term.

But I cannot believe that we have failed to sign a dedicated left back, our back four is a complete shambles with the left side being the biggest issue, if or rather, when we pick up more injuries we could go into free fall. We may be able to score more goals now but we concede for fun

  • 231 GeordieTwo // Feb 1, 2016 at 8:51 PM

  • 258 Our Toon // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:23 PM

It’s suicidal to play 442 away from home without a proper ball winner especially when playing Everton away. Perez I do like but he’ll have to play the role of impact sub.

Tiote should start alongside Shelvey with Sissoko on the right and Townsend on the left. Gini in the hole with Mitro upfront.

At home I’d go 442 away from home 451

  • 264 Our Toon // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:29 PM

    Jamsha

Every signing is a risk mate, including the brits we’ve already bought. Shelvey class against West ham and piss poor against Watford as he tried to go Hollywood to often with his passes.

Doumbia could well have a cisse type impact or he may not….either way nothing is guaranteed

  • 265 switch365 // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:30 PM

Tiote = liability, guaranteed yellow card, guaranteed giving away of free-kicks around the box and potential sending off.

If Saivet needs to bulk up a little more, put Taylor in beside Mbemba and use Colo as a dm beside Shelvey.

  • 266 sparky55 // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:30 PM

The other good thing to come out of this window is the players who thought twice about joining us and didn’t will definitely be impressed with the new spending power of Ashley and if we do survive relegation this year I think we’ll able to attract a much better calibre of player than we would have a year ago.

Players will start to believe we’re a rising star again and I think we’ll find it a lot easier to attract some very good players this summer.

That’s hilarious, Tiote = Liability and your suggestion is to play Saylor and Colo with the skipper as DM.

Btw both Saylor and colo have more reds than Tiote, there’s this nonsense thought process that Tiote gets sent off when he’s got 2 reds in almost 150 games…..that’s bad for a DM.

I agree on giving away the free kicks in daft places but the others already do that, so far this season he’s been the best out of the rest in that role by protecting the back 4

  • 281 JP...from The Rock // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:48 PM

JFA- I think he should be sacked if he loses the next 3 matches. Then again it could backfire on us as it will create some upheaval and be a distraction to the players. Tricky decision.

On the transfer front I bet no one expected so many signings and good ones too. We have done well but we still haven’t addressed the LB position. We are also light on ST, CB, RB and RW. Would have been asking too much in such little time in the January window. But this window has been a very big step in the right direction.

Doumbia cannot start as he needs to be eased in, especially against Everton away it would be a bad place to expect him to do much. Give him a taster see what he does when comes on and pick the better of him or Mitrovic for West Brom.

Think we need some defenders back fit as we are struggling. Unbelievable how we never filled a gap.

I mean Berahino for 21-24m, we have Cisse, Mitrovic, Riviere, Gouffran, Perez and Doumbia who can play up top.

I cannot name a back up right back, have no left backs as all injured and if STaylor is injured again, Lascelles then who?

I do not understand how our club cannot see the mass gap!

  • 318 Munster Mag // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:18 PM

Stoke turning into a serious outfit. Hughes is a top manager now.

  • 319 sparky55 // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:18 PM

IMO its an 8/10 window…with a bit more thought and pro-active planning we could have addressed the defensive issues we have and strengthen there instead of just suggesting we need to score more goals to survive the drop.

When you let in 2 goals a game on average you’d need Messi class strikers to make sure you score three goals a game to offset the two we’re guaranteed to let in. There’s very few players out there you can buy that you can stand up in a court of law and say we’ll definitely score three every game with these players in our team.

I don’t think it’d take Einstein or Jonjo or even google jeff to work out the more reasonable key to survival would have been to bolster the defence in the hope we might only let in an average of one goal and game which means we would only need to score an average of 2 goals a game to win them.

The 24 million we’ve got burning a hole in fat lad’s pocket could easily have been spent on two quality defenders that could have transformed our defence and gotten Colo (our weakest link by a street mile) out of the firing line.

…but I guess that was much too much to ask for!

    Munster

For me I think a ST and LB were equally important.

I still think we have done well and with the pace we have upfront now we shouldn’t get pegged back by team like we have in the past.

Our new look midfield may well help out the defence by keeping the ball more and putting pressure on the opposition higher up the pitch.

  • 323 Transfer Sage // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:20 PM

Not a bad window. We could have done with a boost to the defence.

Colo is playing much better if late and dummet isn’t as bad as made out in my opinion. We lack cover unfortunately.

Hopefully we can survive, maybe push into 14-11 with these new players and get the defence sorted in the summer.

  • 324 brklyngeordie // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:25 PM

Will state again I am no fan of Ashley and the regime but can’t complain about the team at all yes we have some problem areas as does every team in the league but I do know there are a lot of fan bases that would like to have the squad we have..

We need to knuckle down and finish this season as best as possible and can’t panic and be negative team needs support and encouragement make sure we stay up and really look to big improvement next season after few players have got a season under their belt playing in league and playing with one another I for one think the squad as is w/ 1 to 2 additions and offloading some deadwood is easily a top 10 team next season

In the last 10 games except the Man U match we haven’t conceded more than 1.

We’ve had 3/4 results that make our goal differece look truly shocking.

Before you nah say go look at the results, except a handful of games we’ve been not bad at the back.

TS…taking in to consideration what we needed and the amount of money they were willing to spend I would say this window like the one before was messed up!

…is it really that difficult to prioritize?

  • 328 Spoof // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:28 PM

    Firebug

Personally I thought that we needed 2 proven strikers, Doumbia is not proven at this level, we needed a left winger, we got a right winger and are hopeful that he will adapt, we needed a CB and a FB ? and we also needed a deep lying midfielder who could help us to dominate the midfield, fair do’s we got Shelvey, so for me we got one out of five which relates to 2 out of 10

  • 329 Munster Mag // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:28 PM

Ask any top manager if they’d rather have a defence that holds strong and can be relied upon for say 15 clean sheets a year or a front line that scores 2 every game I wonder what they’d wish for.

  • 333 Spoof // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:31 PM

    2 out of 6, so that’s about 1.5 out of 10

  • 334 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:32 PM

Before the window we had no natural goal scorer and we couldn’t stop leaking goals. We’ve signed no defenders and a guy called Doumbia who’s not getting any resounding endorsements or generating any excitement.

  • 335 BandB // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:32 PM

  • 336 manxpie // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:33 PM

OP it’s since dummet has come in to the team it’s far more balanced and colo hasn’t needed to babysit or wonder where the fusk the LB has gone
he just has to concentrate on his own game which is why he’s massively improved recently
as you say tho once injuries set in we could be in big trouble

  • 338 CookyToon // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:34 PM

The scary thing is I think we have the potential to be a force next season with the right additions in the summer and a lot of deadwood going the other way with this new look transfer model.. And I cant remember the last time a team with so much potential faced relegation!

  • 339 welshgeordie9 // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:36 PM

I’m glad we he didn’t sign if he’s going to act like a muppet, besides plenty of options up front with mitrovic, perez, doumbia, cisse and rivière, spoilt for choice in midfield, give marveaux another try, we didn’t send aarons out on loan which is another bonus, get the old tiote back, just the defence, but at least the club made an effort to get defenders in, one was booked for a medical but he done a u turn, overall brilliant window, some pundits have said that we have been the best ones.

  • 340 sparky55 // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:37 PM

All people we have signed are better than what we have. Its jst back up we are lacking.

Dummett is the best NUFC defender at the moment and you keep complaining.

Townsend is going to start he has trained with us for the last 10 days. Its Doumbia i believe will start on the bench.

The ball is in Mccaz hands now.

2 a game is 76 goals, canny start before others chip in, if you score you have the chance to win every game.

The 15 clean sheets would only guarantee 15pts, I’d go for goals.

  • 345 firebug666 // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:40 PM

    Spoof @334

I think we are better for this window, defiantly stronger in midfield, and I hope that’s where the pressure will be held off the defence.

I agree defenders should have been brought in, but in reality I don’t think we actually looked for any, if we did I think we would have got someone in.

Townsend for me is the gamble, I think Shelvey will help control the midfield for us, Savaet (spelling) will come good, and Doumbia I recon will take to the Premiership like a duck to water.

It not to bad, but for me could have been better.

  • 346 JP...from The Rock // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:41 PM

  • 347 angelswithdirtyfaces // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:41 PM

A good window except in reshaping our ever leaky defence.

    Happy with all the signings.
Townsend and JJ both need to show they really are worth the England place, so should be motivated – they’ve both still got it to prove.
Doumbia has a chance to show he can hack it in the EPL .
Not sure about Saivet in the short run, as I suspect he’ll need more time to bed into the side than what’s left of this season.

We really did need the LB and CB – but if Willems comes in the summer I’l be okay with that.
Didn’t our wee friend Anita play an extended spell at Ajax at LB ?
Is he the kind of additional option at LB we really want ?

That contract extension Colo got has left our rebuilding at the back only half done and look where it’s got us.

Yes but Keegan listened to the pundits and bought Batty the crab dropping Clark I think it was, instead of foward passing he went side ways or backwards. Where before we were relentless in our pursuit of goals Batty was a handbrake.

He shot himself in the foot, signing Batty was against everything he beleived and it back fired IMO.

  • 356 Transfer Sage // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:49 PM

Depends if our defensive targets were available now. Rather hold off until the summer than buy players who we don’t want….January not easy to buy.

We bought players who needed game time and weren’t wanted by their clubs, except for the French lad. Maybe our defensive options were all playing regularly and didn’t want a move. We went for a couple left backs but got rejected

U know I haven’t a scooby whether this has been a successful window. I can’t work it out. Could be a disaster could be brilliant all hangs on Mcclaren to set that team up and use his subs SO much better than he has

Well now it’s all up to how McClaren sets the team up, and if he can find a system to suit the players.

The players themselves all have a lot to prove, this is a relegation battle they got us in to, now they will have to show up and get us out of it.

I have to be honest here, but I am really looking forward to these last 15 games let’s hope they don’t disappoint.

  • 361 JamesToon // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:56 PM

Now that we have a reasonably decent squad aside from some deadwood, in the summer we need to match that with a good progressive and modern manager who can get the best out of them and get us back up the table. Would like us to be really ambitious and try and tempt Eddie Howe away from Bournemouth, other options could be Rodgers or Pellegrini

  • 362 Belfast // Feb 1, 2016 at 11:03 PM

Another window over and probably one of the better windows under Ashley. We possibly have more quality, even some competition for places but yet again I can’t help but feel we’ve fallen a little short again. Yet again.
Maybe we have enough to avoid relegation, bravo!

So McClaren. Pull your finger out and earn your wage, we are relying on you now.
No stupid late substitutions when we are chasing the game, react to their changes and be prepared to drop your “stars” because that’s what might be needed.

    Until the next time –

  • 364 OneAlanShearer // Feb 1, 2016 at 11:05 PM

The laughable thing is remy actually thinks he will play…they play one striker so Costa and Pato will rotate. Remy no chance.

On berahino they have no chance of getting more than 21 million. I hope they go down now and he goes for a tribunal fee.

  • 365 Jib // Feb 1, 2016 at 11:05 PM

Well you cannot say we didn’t try for a left back looks like we’ll have to rely on the incumbents plus the kids.

  • 366 geordie157 // Feb 1, 2016 at 11:10 PM

Decent window overall, would have loved another striker and a left back. But the squad is stronger….plus I’m assuming we now also have Tiote still so we’ve got more competition in centre mid.

  • 367 The overrated Frenchman // Feb 1, 2016 at 11:24 PM

Question marks around all these players for me. Various concerning issues of form, fitness, attitude, lack of PL experience – not one blue chip signing that I can see. If this window was supposed to pull us out of the relegation battle I’d rate it 3/10. Ashley finally spends and we still can’t get it right.
