Newcastle In Surprise Move For Belgian Striker

8:58 am, Monday, February 1st, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 28 Comments

L’Equipe in France are reporting today that Newcastle have not been successful in a late bid today for 22 year-old Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi.

Newcastle had been interested in the Belgian striker earlier in this transfer window but the word from Marseille is they didn´t want to sell this month.

Michy Batshuayi -592595

22 year-old Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi

A bid was made and the news is that the bid was immediately turned down – so here again Newcastle have tried a second time – as we did with Alexandre Lacazette of Lyon a few days ago – to go back in to try to sign one of our top targets in France.

It seems obvious Newcastle know we need a top striker coming in – from somewhere.

L´Equipe are reporting that both Tottenham and Stoke have also expressed an interest in the in-demand striker who is very likely to leave Marseille in the summer.

And he could be a target for Newcastle in the summer if we retain our Premier League status.

Batshuayi joined Marseille from Standard Liege in the summer of 2014 and since then he has played 60 games for the south of France club with 25 goals and  8 assists.

This season he has 15 goals in 32 total appearances for Marseille and has been in excellent form.

This is an unexpected bid from Newcastle so maybe there could be other surprises today if we cannot get Berahino through the door and go after some other targets.

Maybe even Blackburn’s Scottish striker Jordan Rhodes?

Comments welcome.

I don’t think anyone will be confirmed until the end of the window, we’ve spent money. No way there getting a photographer in 2 or 3 times when once will do, gota claw those pennies back.

We are going to be linked with 5-10 strikers today – interesting to see who will actually be holding up the NUFC shirt on the website by midnight tonight – if any!

Whatever will be will be.. All this what do you think.. It doesn’t matter what you he she we think, just wait and fate will play it’s inevitable hand. And then we have something to talk about and peruse over. ?

Get these strikers or striker in, howay Toon.

Keith Downey saying no response from West Brom over 21 mil bid.

    No rejection.

How long do we wait on them though?

    On SSN now.

NUFC have had no responce from WBA regarding the bid for Berihinio.

Doumbia is on Tyneside, NUFC also want a LB before the window closes.

Saying Stoke and Spurs are keeping a eye on the Berihinio situation and both clubs have made it known how much they are prepared to pay.

Seems to me it’s down to how much we’re willing to pay.

    Strange place this Newcastle blog..!!

If Peace has already told us that Berahino isn’t available, then maybe he feels there is no need to respond until the figure gets high enough to change his mind.

“Call my Bluff” is the name of the game

If it’s going down to a bidding war, we probably wont sign him. Ashley will easily be out bid I reckon.

Still seeing reports of a deadline day gibbs bid, and rumblings of Leicester pulling out of the remy deal. Could all be sh1te, like.

Maybe it’s just me and the fact that I’m a million miles away in Melbourne Australia..? But I doubt it.

  • 12 VanToonMan // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:12 AM

If we get Doumbia and a LB – would people deem that as a successful window? I think if SSN hadn’t mentioned our bid yday we would definitely have been satisfied but now the bar for hopes has been raised!

You’re not the only Aussie-based poster who comes here, so it isn’t that. The fact is, most of us are, indeed, strange 😀

I wouldnt go above 25m for Berahino, already that is too much but transfer deadline day increases what people will pay.

Would rather get Doumbia and Remy on loan, then make 1 permanent in the summer if they pay off.

If we have 25m spare right now then keep it for the summer and use it more wisely and let these 2 loan guys see us safe.

Id be happy with that, personally. Signing 2 strikers is all well and good, but in some ways ot would seem like giving up on mitro and perez already.

We are the team who have leaked the third most goals and yet the powers at Newcastle doesn’t think strengthening the defense is a priority!

One of Ian’s aliases doesn’t seem to think either…

Imagine Mbembe or Colo getting long term injured.

  • 17 optimistic prime // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:17 AM

I think we’ll get him, it was always our ploy to wait. Peace doesn’t want Pullis getting his hands on the money as he wants to sell the club.

I think it’ll go through but late in the day, don’t think spurs or Stoke will match or beat our offer.

Peace is hoping for a bidding war he isn’t going to get.

    Mexican stand off.

Personally I wouldnt pay more than a fiver for Berahino but am not a football club and really I am quite willing to do my own dishes

  • 19 lesh // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:18 AM

Between them, Charnley and Carr got the priorities wrong in the summer by bringing Thauvin in rather than focusing on real needs of a CB, LB and striker.

They’ve had months to line up the players we’ve needed and their shortsightedness may well result in relegation. That being the case, then Charnley as Chief Exec should be dismissed and Carr either his influence limited or retired.

For once in years there’s been serious money to spend on strengthening and they’ve probably cocked up.

  • 20 WWSBRD // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:19 AM

If u keep the opponent on the back foot u dont need defend as much

  • 21 TomaKaThor // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:20 AM

If this is ‘true’, then surely we would of used Thuavin as part of the deal and not decide to bid the day after.

  • 22 VanToonMan // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:22 AM

YouCouldnt – you’re right to an extent although Doumbia would be on loan. But even with one striker through the door one of Mitro or Perez (most likely Perez) will need to be on the bench.

Usually our transfer business (whether a lot or hardly anything) is done and dusted before deadline day – in fact I cannot remember the last time we bought a player on deadline day – so at least for once we can join in the excitement that SSN always show for deadline day

  • 23 JP...from The Rock // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:22 AM

Man the Doumbia announcement is really dragging on now! Getting worried.

I hope we’re looking at more ST because the board realize we need them and not because we have failed so sign Doumbia up.

Batshuayi is a good move and looks like the next Lukaku. I am loke the names we’re going after but if we end up with Gomis I consider it a failure.

  • 24 Rotonda heights // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:22 AM

seems our only hopes of signing bigger names is when ash gets personally involved.

Summer should see the end of charnley and carr as they have been nothing short of disgraceful

  • 25 Ian Toon // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:23 AM

For WBA losing Berahino is not dependant on bringing in a replacement but getting the maximum fee. It could well drag on. Paying in full rather than in staged payments could well win us the prize. Levy is the only obstacle.

  • 26 optimistic prime // Feb 1, 2016 at 9:23 AM

Where are we on the goals scored list?

We’ve been beaten by the odd goal except 2/3 times when we rolled over and took a hiding. How many if the last 10 have we lost 1-0 despite having umpteen chances.

    P.s. Who’s Ian’s alias?

  • 27 Berahinwho..? // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:42 AM

    Totally agree.

  • 28 Berahinwho..? // Feb 1, 2016 at 10:52 AM

Firstly, good to know about Aussie supporters having a laugh on the blog.

And secondly, isn’t it abnormally strange in/on here.?
