Seydou Doumbia – signed on loan today

This is what Newcastle have just put out on the website:

Newcastle United have completed the loan signing of Ivory Coast international striker Seydou Doumbia from AS Roma, subject to the player receiving the appropriate visa.

The 28-year-old moves to St. James’ Park until the end of the season, with an option to make the deal permanent in the summer.

After starting his career in his homeland, Doumbia made a name for himself in Japan’s J League with Kashiwa Reysol and Tokushima Vortis, before switching to Swiss club Young Boys in 2008.

He netted 58 goals in just 79 appearances, which prompted a move to CSKA Moscow in January 2010.

During five trophy-laden years in Russia, Doumbia fired CSKA to two league titles, two Russian Cups and two Russian Super Cups, as well as featuring in the Champions League, where he scored 16 goals in just 23 appearances.

He signed for Italian giants Roma in January 2015 before being loaned back to CSKA Moscow last August.

This is what Doumbia said:

“I’m delighted to be a Newcastle United player,” “I’ve already started to prepare. I’ve arrived and I’m ready to go.

“It has always been a dream to play in the Premier League and now that dream has come true, so I’m absolutely delighted.

“I am looking forward to helping the Club get some wins and climb the table.”

Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren added:

“It is no secret that we have been looking to add to our options in the striking area.

“We have been searching for a forward and were delighted when the opportunity arose to take Seydou on loan.

“He is a natural goalscorer, someone who has scored goals in the Champions League and has played at the highest level. We believe he can make a mark in this team.”

Seydou is certainly a natural goalscorer and when he gets a decent chance he’s likely to put the ball in the back of the net.

He could even turn even turn out to be a great signing for us for the run-in.

How many goals did Papiss Cisse score in his first 14 games for Newcastle again back in 2012?

That’s right 13.

Just got a cheeky £10 bet with Paddy Power for Newcastle top 10 finish at 80-1
Worth a shout I reckon, we’re only 11 points off at moment with some great signings.
Hopeful I know but worth a tenner!!!
    C’mon TOON, up the table!!!

pellegrini at sjp would be amazing.

Now doumbia is on board is another striker really that important.

I hope dummet, MBabu and Haidara don’t have long term injuries at LB and I guess Lascelles is the extra CB for now.

good signing. i wouldnt say no to berahino, but am i the only one that really wants perez and mitro to be our long term goal scoring partnership? i think saido might upset that project.

Doumbia on the other hand is older and more experienced, and i think he’s in a better place to come in and support the development of our youth players more than berahino (also young).

Plus Doumbia will know Tiote a bit, so hopefully that will help him settle.

    That’s a cheeky £10 you’ll never see again lol

I dunno about that but I wouldn’t mind putting a few quid on Citeh pissing the league next season with Guardiola as manager

    Mackems are from MORDOR!

    Great user name marra.

But Orc’s are prettier and have better manners than Makems. 😀

That thought about pep flashed across my mind, if only Ashley sold.

Then I thought not a bad window, then I thought we’ve lost 6 in a row all down to Ashley’s managerial choices and transfer policies.

3/4 years of transfers won’t do, 3/4 cups and league titles then I’ll forgive Ashley.

    Ashley out.

Ps, that happened in about 3secs and I feel much better, but Ashley out all the same.

I’m not too fussed on pelegrini

I’ve seen some interesting videos of him talking tactics and he clearly knows a lot.

But at city he’s had all the talent in the world and at times has really struggled to set up a cohesive system.

Don’t know wether we’d have been better off carbon dating Doumbia rather than giving him a medical.

    Remeber Rodger Miller?
He destroyed England and he was 72

  • 23 Belfast // Feb 1, 2016 at 2:26 PM

Aye Jesper he had a hard paper round for sure.

  • 24 JP...from The Rock // Feb 1, 2016 at 2:27 PM

Why does Keith Downie say “Berahinyo”! Lol It’s Berahino!!!

I though we had improved our offer of £21m to £25m plus add ons. When that was reported at the same time Berahino left training early and possibly on the way to Newcastle to finalise the transfer.

  • 25 ToonRich // Feb 1, 2016 at 2:28 PM

where was that news from @jonjo???

  • 26 optimistic prime // Feb 1, 2016 at 2:28 PM

He does look old but he looks the same now as 4/5 years ago, he’s been breaking rocks in a quarry with his face not delivering papers!

  • 27 firebug666 // Feb 1, 2016 at 2:30 PM

I think they just put Doumbia in the dressing room between matches and leave him plugged in.

    Roger Milla Cameroon.

Regardless of what happens today, im happy with the signing we have made, i think the man has backed what he said up at the end of last season, the business had been done in the open , so to say, and i have been happy with the players we have been Linked with,

I think it shows that NUFC is still a big name in the football world.

  • 30 JP...from The Rock // Feb 1, 2016 at 2:32 PM

He looks at least 30 but I couldn’t care less as long as he scores the goals to keep us up.

  • 31 Take a Chancel on me // Feb 1, 2016 at 2:32 PM

glad perez signs new contract maybe that was his surprise

  • 32 firebug666 // Feb 1, 2016 at 2:33 PM

I would say that was it mate.

  • 33 optimistic prime // Feb 1, 2016 at 2:33 PM

That’s him, he had a few dances against England at Italia90 I think it was.

I’m sure he was about 40, or so they said.

  • 34 JP...from The Rock // Feb 1, 2016 at 2:35 PM

Apparently we’ve bid £15m for Slimani of Sporting Lisbon. We were linked with him a few years ago and looks like a great forward made for the EPL. The bid has been rejected though.

Another good piece of news is that NUFC have offered Ayoze a new deal.

  • 35 dannyhunt // Feb 1, 2016 at 2:36 PM

Anyone know when collocinis contract runs out? Thought we’d have put a cheeky bid in for micah richards

  • 36 dannyhunt // Feb 1, 2016 at 2:40 PM

Doumbia my lord Doumbia, oh lord Doumbia

  • 37 El Sleeve // Feb 1, 2016 at 2:46 PM

Santo rejected a chance to return on loan. That would’ve been a most welcome move!

@ Belfast. Only £10, would spend that in buying 2 drinks in the Apartment bar on a Saturday night!!!

  • 39 Jib // Feb 1, 2016 at 3:00 PM

In Russia we are being linked with Dutch leftback Alexander Buttner who went from Man U to Dynamo Moscow.
I can’t post the link as it is in Cyrillic script but here’s a link to his wiki profile
