Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson seems to have thought that Newcastle did great in the January transfer window and has given the club an A+ for their transfer window and on contrast he has given Sunderland a C.
Seydou Doumbia with Steve McClaren yesterday
Newcastle did well to do the following deals in the January transfer window.
Player | Fee | Club |
---|---|---|
INCOMING | ||
Jonjo Shelvey | £12M | Swansea |
Henri Saivet | £5M | Bordeaux |
Andros Townsend | £12M | Tottenham |
Seydou Doumbia | Loan | AS Roma |
Transfer Fees Out | £29M | |
OUTGOING | ||
Florian Thauvin | Loan | Marseille |
Shane Ferguson | £0.25M | Milwall |
Mike Williamson | £0.25M | Wolves |
Adam Armstrong | Extended Loan | Coventry |
Gael Bigirimana | Extended Loan | Coventry |
Transfer Fees In | £0.5M | |
Net Spend | £28.5M |
Newcastle were also the biggest spenders in the January transfer window.
This is what Paul has said about the Newcastle transfer window and the players we brought in:
“They have had a right go in the transfer market and it was 100% the right thing to do.”
“I like what they’ve bought; Andros Townsend and Jonjo Shelvey have played in the Premier League, they’ve played international football, they always want to get on the ball and I really like that.”
Grade: A+
And most fans think we have done well also.

Now we have to start winning and Steve McClaren has to start producing – we have a tough game at Everton tomorrow night.

Comments welcome.

Comment #1Sadly, Seydou Doumbia is not even an anagram of Charlie Austin.

TP…so when the summer transfer window comes I suppose we can always with until January to get a LB since Colback and who ever else you mentioned can always cover 😉
Where do you stand on our CB defense situation?

Comment #5If we are grading this window I’ll go ad far and say it’s a B+…maybe just a B. It really depends on how much you think they neglected the defense.
A few injuries and everyone will have sissy fit 😉

Comment #10I can’t see that this was such a great transfer window for us when you see a CB and a left sided defender, two positions where we are desperately thin on the ground, leaving the club, with no replacements.

I would happily have him in the summer, I just hope we can do enough defensively to stay up. Still thought LB should of been addressed.
Fingers crossed fella

Comment #18hibbitt…it’s funny how the club likes to gamble on the defense. But taking in to consideration how we play football maybe they share the opinion of others on here, that the defense is of no importance?
Maybe they just don’t want to replace Colo before they really really have to? and maybe they think Dummett is all that? Maybe they are just plain and simple naive? Who knows 😉

I see this window as prioritising goals first and foremost. We have added a natural goal scorer and creativity. the LB spot could do with upgrading I agree with this but it has only looked so desperate recently because of the injuries sustained to Haidara, Dummett, Colback, Mbabu. I can see why it wasn’t a priority and can wait until the Summer. The same goes for CB, Taylor is back and Dummett can play there if needed.
Through this window all I have wanted was goals brought into the team, I can’t knock it, bringing in English players who have experience in this league im over the moon with aswell.
They have did well. But it never should of got to this stage to start with. That’s two windows now we have set out to make a statement and show intent.
A LB, CB and quality striker in the Summer and we are looking OK so long as we replace all outgoings and keep the competetion for places alive within the squad.

Comment #20Hopefully the injury front is looking better than we think and Dummet will be back along with Colback, was the defence not a shambles against Watford, is this the same defence that will go to Everton, should we sack McLaren if we don’t beat W Brom

Comment #21I am with Jesper on this one. B+. A would have included a LB, A+ would have included a CB as well. Happy enough with our front line (provided doumbia hits form straight away).

Comment #22TP…the problem is you cannot really separate goals like that. You need a solid good defense to have a capable scoring offense. It’s a symbiosis so to speak.
But in our case we are a relegation candidate who not only needs goals but are actually leaking more than we can make up for. The defense was always the bigger concern because the goalscoring capabilities were there already.
I am all for the transfers we have made. My problem is as always those we didn’t make 😉

Comment #23We really did give it a go for Berahino.
He was our number one target, and whether it was ambition or self-preservation. it WAS serious.
We may have been listening to the wrong people at WBA and have backed the wrong horse between Peace and Pulis.
So we failed to get our top target, and the mood at the club won’t be A+ and McClaren won’t be elated.
Big loser is Tony Pulis, marked for the chop .Charley and Carr may be running out of excuses too.

Comment #24Was a good window all in all for us, finally providing competition for places and we have goals in the side. I can’t see there being too much of an issue in the remaining 15 games for us IF we continue to produce as many chances as we have been in the last few games, although that is a big if.
Who thinks Mangala might be worth a shout in the summer? They reckon Pep is going to get rid of him and I reckon he could be worth a shot depending on the transfer fee.

Comment #25Yes it will be a good transfer window – IF WE STAY UP!!!!
Also might take a couple of games for the new players to fit in/Gel.
looking forward to the rest of the season with a wee tad more optimism than I did at the end of December.
Any way did any one in the toon see the sunrise today and the rainbow coloured clouds – pretty spectacular

Comment #26Considering we have the third worst defence in the PL unless of course we exclude those three nasty results which would still leave us in the minus, you’d have thought defenders would have been brought in way before an untested French CM?DM?

We have always been one window behind as regards to the players we need compared to what we sign. It must be an Ashley thing.

Comment #29Merson is not widely known as being a savant when it comes to .. well anything.
I really can not believe that 90% of people on here believe that this was a good window. It would have been a good window had we bothered to reinforce the defense. We are one injury away (which is going to happen, we have Saylor in the squad) from a defensive crisis. Lascelles impressed me, but is too inexperienced to “slot in” if Colo gets injured. We have no LB cover (Dummett is a good defensive LB in my opinion, offers very little going forward) and no RB cover (Janmaat is the total opposite of Dummett). Anita and Colback are not LB/RB. We have been torn apart when they have had to slot in there.
This is going to be a long and arduous remainder of the season. I truly hope I am proven wrong, but I really feel we will struggle to stay afloat.

Comment #30You have to say it was a good window as some exciting players have been bought/loaned and some good money spent. If you say it wasn’t a good window because of reasons I pointed out above then you are accused of never being happy, when the reality is we are desperate for a better defence and have been for five years now.

mbemba can play right back I think its where he first played for us in his early games
don’t think I would like to se him there again
its unfortunate that mbabu got injured he did well early in the season and if it meant more game time I would have been happy with being back up to both right and left
we tried to bring in 2 left backs and for what ever reason we failed to bring them in both were loans
were they loans because we have a new left back more or less sorted for the summer or was this just cos of injuries and were gonna stick with what we got
