Saido Berahino´s Strange Tweet Last Night

10:08 am, Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 158 Comments

Saido Berahino may still end up at Newcastle in the summer and at the end of the transfer window last night he sent out a rather strange tweet – but maybe it´s just a sign he is maturing.

Saido is a good player and it seems Newcastle will be going after a top striker in the summer if we survive in the Premier League.

saido berahino

It seems to us Saido would be a great signing for us.

    This is a good resource
It shows highlights of all the games in the major leagues in the world
The tabs at the top are self explanatory and it has a good search facility

  • 2 TroubledToon // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:16 AM

He should be called Weirdo Berahino with tweets like those!!

  • 3 martoon // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:16 AM

Why does Ed always publish a newblog the second I press the submit button 🙂
I think the general consensus of opinion is people are pleased with the signings but think we needed a defender in particular a left back. I agree with this but to be fair to the club they did try with the 2 that got away and Enrique. Apparently we only offered a contract until the end of the season whereas Enrique wanted longer. Although disappointing sensible I would say other we would have been stuck with an older injury prone player on high wages and we’ve got enough of them already 🙂
With the recruitment of CM players we can use Colback at LB -not ideal but he did play there for the makems!

  • 4 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:17 AM

If this lad gets stuck back in, and scores 10 goals, there is no way he will come here. Better sides will want him.

  • 5 Barton // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:18 AM

so how many games to peeps think McClaren will get to turn it round after Fat mans spending spree ?,will give him 3 more games and if we still in this position,or the gap opens to 5-6 pts to 17th,Think he will act,its the only option left now to keep us up.

  • 6 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:18 AM

He is trying to hide from you. 😀

  • 7 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:19 AM

I will give him 3, but not including everton. That game is always a write off.

  • 8 Jib // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:22 AM

    Also this

  • 9 martoon // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:23 AM

YouCouldn’tMakeItUp – You’re on the blog a lot – is the boss away? My excuse is I’m working from home 🙂

  • 10 beermonkey // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:23 AM

    we don’t sack them

  • 11 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:24 AM

No, he is sitting opposite playing startrek trexles on his phone!!!

  • 12 martoon // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:27 AM

Barton & YouCouldn’tMakeItUp -I’m quite hopeful about the Everton game – they’ve had a couple of hard games since we last played and we’ve got our new attackers – our pace up front could be scarey with Sisssoko, Wjynaldum, Townsend and Doumbia!

  • 13 Laurent Robert 32 // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:27 AM

I wonder what he deems ‘mistake’ to mean?

To sit out while not in favour until contract runs down? To possibly join us near the bottom of the table? Something else? Is he having a go at the pundits, the manager?

  • 14 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:31 AM

Hes probably refering to the strop he took in the summer. Maybe he has grown up a little bit.

  • 15 Goldmbemba // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:31 AM

That tweet was weird, because the grammar just didnt make sense. What is he saying?

Its the ‘so here you go’ bit that i dont understand. What ‘so here you go’ ??

Look at me making a fool of myself?
Look at me about to sign for another club?
Look at me sitting on the bench for another 6 months?

Does anyone actually know what he means?

  • 16 Jib // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:32 AM

McClaren has a 3 year contract and it will be honoured.

  • 17 Toon_Barmy // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:32 AM

Bit of a cryptic tweet but I assume he’s trying to say he’s once again refusing to play for them like he done at the end of the last window? Can’t wait for the daily berainho articles on here for the next 6 month in place of the Charlie Austin ones

  • 18 BandB // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:33 AM

I don’t think you can argue that the club has changed AND that McClaren is safe as houses.
Ashley has shown he is prepared to spend the club’s money to get out of trouble. We’ve got in everyone who would come.
I read it as simple maths. We’ve spend around £25m in a winter window to avoid losing £150m in income in the summer. Ashley will recoup some of that through a fire sale if the gamble fails. He’ll take a hit for sure, but it will have been a sound gamble.
I don’t think a club that was prepared to pay £21m for Berahino will sweat too much on the cost of paying off McClaren if he continues to fail.
I think he’s got five games.

  • 19 Tsunki // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:34 AM

Haven’t said a thing about Berahino but but I will mention that I watched him play in a cup tie against lower league opposition some time back, I recall he scored one and didn’t celebrate at all, just trotted back like they didn’t deserve him, and I just thought what a Grade A Tool he was.

  • 20 Kc-Toon // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:36 AM

I’m sure the tweet was building up to people expecting him to have a rant about not being able to leave with that first sentence , but instead said night and thanks for the support

  • 21 Barton // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:37 AM

I think he be gone by the stoke/bournmouth game if things have not improved.

  • 22 Tsunki // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:37 AM

Toon Barmy at least with Austin everyone spelled his name correctly. 🙂

  • 23 WWSBRD // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:39 AM

I wont be against McClaren getting the boot, very underwhelmed by his time with us so far

  • 24 Goldmbemba // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:39 AM

Just watching Doumbia taking pens, i love his technique. Stuttering run up and then you literally have no idea which way the ball is going. must be a nightmare for keepers.

In his general play He reminds me of a little jack terrier, yapping around the penalty box. I really hope he sticks a few in and becomes a problem for opposition defences. He looks like an unpredictable forward which can only be a good thing. Him playing off mitrovic strength and presence could be a good match up.

do we think he’ll start tomorrow?

  • 25 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:39 AM

Nobody seems to mention that some of our rivals to avoid the drop have also spent big money. It’s not so much about how much you spend but how wisely you spend it. Other clubs could have spent half what we have, but if, unlike us, they’ve strengthened in all the places they were weak, we’ve fallen behind.

I think it was Wayayman who said Austin was never coming and gave a number of reasons about his various south coast connections. However, he added at the end that Southampton had offered him far more in wages than we would. The one crucial factor IMO. Of course, Southampton could afford to pay high wages because they weren’t paying a £15m fee. If you capitalise the wages of players like Austin, what would the net spend table look like?

  • 26 optimistic prime // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:40 AM

I agree on Steeve and said as much yesterday. Hes been backed, they look like his players not Carrs. If there’s not a significant turn around I think he’ll get the bullet after 5 games.

Never thought I’d say that but I can’t see Ashley taking excuses after this window, maybe wrong but I think he’ll demand results now.

  • 27 croftus5678 // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:40 AM

well…villa seem to have given up the ghost !

no signings and a very very upset manager who wants out !

we need to add very little next season to have a real good go at the top half imo a decent cb and a lb if all goes well.

  • 28 Toon_Tom // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:40 AM

KC @ 20 – that is how I interpreted it too.

He had a rant at the end of the last window so was toying with us as if he was going to have another rant – instead he simply signed off with a goodnight.

  • 29 optimistic prime // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:44 AM

Maybe because no ones bothered about Swansea loaning Leroy Fer or Naismith to Norwich.

You also failed to mention the weakening all of our rivals also did, Fletcher Shrelvey blah blah blah.

  • 30 TroubledToon // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:45 AM

Agree with you mate. Doumbia certainly does seem to be a handful. Seen him a bit before in the CL. I’m pretty excited to see him play for us. Hopefully he does play tomorrow. I think he’ll fit right in and have a cracking partnership with Mitro

  • 31 BandB // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:46 AM

I think we had £50m to spend this winter, and we couldn’t spend it!
We’ve caught every fish we could in that tiny pond we fish in.
My guess is that Ash would sleep better if we’d got more done, though he put these brakes on and can’t really complain if the mechanism proved a bit rusty when it needed to crank at 100 per cent.

  • 32 switch365 // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:49 AM

Surely in the summer we simply must focus on getting a defence built.

Even if Taylor comes good once again and plays a few blinders, his time as a Newcastle player, along with Colo and a few others has to be up. We’ve gotten rid of Willo finally, now to start planning for May.

  • 33 optimistic prime // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:51 AM

IMO we’ll set up 451 tomorrow.
Townsend will def start with Mitro up front, at around 65mins or when Everton tire Doumbia and Perez to really stretch them.

I fancy a win, Everton are there for the taking. I said the same about Watford until Steeves formation blew it.

I’ll be dissapointed with anything less than a point.

  • 34 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:51 AM

If Doumbia turns out to be the goal scoring beast we need, we might survive. I don’t know about him so can’t comment until I’ve seen him play.

Leaving him aside, we’ve added to midfield, where we are strongest, and neglected defence, where we are shit.

It leaves me in the 9%. £80m spent and still far from confident that we’ll survive.

  • 35 The next Mike Williamson // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:52 AM

remy garde must be sick he chose villa when he sees our spending. carver seemed to be aware we’d spend big way before the summer which makes me think pardew must have also known. the only downer is we could have attracted a top manager by telling him he had 100m or more to spend.

  • 36 Jib // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:53 AM

Randy Lerner “only” paid £62.5 million for Villa and wants £200 million for it.
He’s not prepared to put any more money into it because when he did the fans just twisted and complained it was never enough (remind you of anyone Blackley)
Unfortunately for Remi Garde it looks like he’s been stitched up.

  • 37 Goldmbemba // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:55 AM

Fletcher going to marseilles is crazy for Sunderland. They lost wickham, theyve now lost fletcher who was on good form in patches last couple of years. Every one knows Defoe has injury problems from time to time. If he breaks down in the coming weeks then i think that really leaves them in trouble.

    Khazri coming in , he’s a midfielder.

Trouble is sunderland seem to be able to pull together at the right moments, they have pulled some great results out of the bag at times.

I think we have no excuse not to vacate the relegation zone now. I think it could be swansea that fills that place if it isnt us. Because theyve got lowered morale, theyve lost shelvey to us, they only got fer in on loan i think (hardly a convincing PL performer in recent years). Plus a newbie manager.

I think norwich could pull away with bournmouth. norwich arent bad, they have a decent manager, and some good players. Bournemouth too, they have a great team spirit and zero expectations in their maiden PL season.

  • 38 BandB // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:56 AM

    I agree with you.
Does this mean I can count on you to stick by me when the Ianosphere renews its insinuation that fearing relegation and wishing it are the same thing?

  • 39 croftus5678 // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:56 AM

    @32 switch

i’m glad bera did not come or any other striker tbh as that would mean arma did not get his chance next season and tbh i value arma as just as good if not better than bera.

cb wise theres only mbemba i’m 100% about
dummett i would be happy ish with.
lescalles i dont think will make it as he’s on par with willo imo.
mbabu is one player i would use as lb/rb or cb as i rate him very highly.
satka if he makes the grade will not be ready for a long time yet.
and saylor is too inconsistant for my liking.
    and colo….well no comment.

  • 40 manxpie // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:56 AM

People who are saying he was rubbish at roma there seems to be quite a few reasons why it didn’t work out for him there a Italian reporter on 5 live last night was saying the fans hated him and he hated garcia which alludes to him not getting played in the right position
plus she said roma fans are delusional over where they actually are and they get on the back of there strikers very quickly.
plus add to the fact Italian football is the opposite of English football then there is quite a few reasons why it didn’t work out

  • 41 Jail for Ashley // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:56 AM

Personally I think McLaren should get the boot if we fail to beat W Brom. As you all know I am no fan of Mike Ashley but he has spent nearly 80M this season, more than anyone else, there can be a lot of reasons bandied about as to why, lack of previous spending, because we’re in trouble etc. but the fact is that it has been spent and it is up to the manager to expel that losing mentality and get the players winning again, you can cite the lack of defenders but we are led to believe that McLaren is an influence on the board, so over to you Schteve, three points out of the next three games or sling your hook.

  • 42 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:57 AM

I think the problem most have with this transfer window is not our net spending, but the lack of prioritizing!

    …maybe it’s just stupidity?

  • 43 Lindisfarne // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:57 AM

Nothing strange about that tweet, the lad learnt his lesson and is seeing out the season at WBA. Even if he does not like it he us willing to get on with it and not share his frustrations, this time.

  • 44 Jail for Ashley // Feb 2, 2016 at 10:59 AM

I also think that old Blackas has taken far too much abuse over this last week, we all know he can be an insufferable bore at times but is very rarely offensive, except when he’s got his macaw jacket on !

  • 45 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:01 AM

Our team has definitely improved from last season.

    Last seasons starting eleven:

    De Jong

    This season:

    ____________Doumbia(drumbeats lmao)

Such a better team with so much potential on the bench. Surely this £70 million team can keep us up???

  • 46 Lindisfarne // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:01 AM

Ni disagreeing with the need to prioritize, but the club is not an attractive prospect at the moment and a stronger squad overall is the priority. The players coming in generally have their own agendas.

  • 47 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:02 AM

Bournemouth, Watford and Sunderland I’m thinking about mainly. We’re become increasingly isolated down there with fewer rivals.

Also, the positrons are forever telling us how well Makro has the team playing. He’s now got to find another formula to keep that and bring goals. Change the personnel, even with better players, and it may be worse not better. At the very least, it may take time to gel, especially if Carr has had a large input as opposed to Makro, the one who has to conduct the orchestra. A bad start, the pressure of relegation and it could all go tits up.

  • 48 optimistic prime // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:03 AM

Is it a good thing or a bad thing we couldn’t spend it? I’m unsure.

I’d have loved Berihinio but given the choice I’d prefer Lacazzete.

If the 20m we didn’t spend is added to the 50m being mentioned it’s not so bad.
If and if is a big word we climb to a half decent position we’d be able to attract better quality to the club in the summer.

I wasn’t screaming for defenders as I think it’s really hard to get a back 4 settled and to understand each other’s play.
We’re much better than we have been and IMO wasn’t worth the risk as I doubt we’d have attracted the quality we want and need.

I don’t think we paid over the odds for Shelvey and Townsend, think 24m for those two is about right given age etc.
A cpl of years ago the mackems paid around the same for Rodwell and the Paedo, we got the better deal by far.

I’m satisfied, I’ll be happy when we’re safe and extatic if Ashley leaves.

    Where’s this training ground redevelopment?

  • 49 WWSBRD // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:03 AM

A lot of folk thinking we wont beat Everton, why? They are pretty crap

Villa are gone, after the next 6 sland will be goners. It’s us Swansea or Norwich for last space, we’ve enough to get 5/6 more than those 2.

Sland let Pantilimon go to a relegation rival and let Fletcher go. Swansea let Shelvey go etc. Who’d Watford buy?
    Norwich got Bamford.

    Bournemouth won’t go down.

    Are you being serious?
69% of fans on SSN say we did best buisness, most of the pundits said we’d bought in right positions decent players and we’re going to be safe.

I can’t rember you flapping this much last year when we got?

  • 58 BandB // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:12 AM

    I also agree with Jail.
However, I wish I could lose the impression that you mainly post in hopes of finding a good repetitive row, and that your changes of tack are motivated by the search for a new and enjoyably (for you) controversial and contrarian position from which you can browbeat people.

  • 59 martoon // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:14 AM

Jail @44 – He took stick for accusing Carr of having Alzheimer’s and then tried to justify it by producing statistics how as you get older you lose mental function. However he is too arrogant to understand the difference between losing some mental capacity and Alzheimer’s – I for one found it very offensive!

  • 60 Mister Tuff // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:23 AM

Overall an ok window but the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
As has already been stated if we stay up it is a good window. Can Wally Blusterman mould what he’s got into a team that can win?

    Start up’s.
    Townsend definite starter.
Doumbia (docs pending) definite starter -centre forward -up top – at the expensive of Mitro -initially.
I think Perez to feed off Doumbia -possibly in a role that Berahino might have done – quick feet/quicker of thought.

  • 61 BandB // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:24 AM

    Where’s the training ground?
It’s on prime development land situated conveniently close to the A1, transport hubs and local amenities.
    I thought you knew.

  • 62 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:27 AM

It’s not as simple as saying I complain that the money spent isn’t enough. Most people will understand my view. But let me make it clear for you.

It’s not money well spent because the club is badly run from top to bottom. It would be enough if it was well spent. It’s not well spent so its not enough. I’ve always said, before buying players, spend well on a professional recruitment team and a top manager.

How does your goal difference argument go again? Take some goals conceded from our tally and it looks quite decent in comparison?

  • 63 Mister Tuff // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:31 AM

Not wishing to start thye ageism topic again -but I noted a comment which I thought showed a complete misunderstanding of the reality of life tempered with some arrogance.
It was brawn v brains -there was the implicit suggestion that those who had the brains worked longer in life because they had brains whilst those with brawn retired early -with to me a clear implied suggestion that the brains were the better folk.
To the author – in my experience a lot of people who do manual work retire early (in the context of this comparison) because their bodies are worn out/f***ed. With a high proprtion of them not living to enjoy their pensions.
To the author – you are arrogant and need to be more knowlegable about life issues than you do now. That is the end of that -but I felt I had to make the point.

  • 64 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:31 AM

What personal abuse from me? To suggest that old Mr Carr’s performance would suggest that he’s past it? That at the age, you’re no longer at the top of your game? At that age, you are deteriorating mentally as well as physically?

  • 65 BandB // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:32 AM

I’ve managed quite eadily to avoid Jonjo’s bad jokes. I see his name and I skip them. You could do the same. Did you add anything to the debate or just complain that you’d rather talk about something else?

  • 68 Slank // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:44 AM

    Mister Tuff

Yes the proof is in the eating.

Unfortunately that is what was said in the summer that with all our new recruits most people, myself included, believed we would be in the top ten by now.

Few people, if any, possibly with the exception of the odd pundit (Charlie Nichols I believe) believed we would be fighting relegation from the first game of the season.

We have a better chance of escaping relegation after this transfer window but it’s not certain.

  • 69 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:44 AM

See my comment to Martoon @65. I made a point and several people jumped on it, calling me ageist. I’d think you’d answer each of your critics in those circumstances. I’m not ageist. I’m a realist. Just because someone is old, it doesn’t mean they haven’t got a lot to offer. They move over at a certain age. Make way for the younger man with the drive and vitality. But they can remain a brilliant counsel. That’s why I went to see Tony Benn at the Sage, as I mentioned. He was almost deaf and quite frail, but brilliant. But I wouldn’t be voting for him as I would when he was younger.

The secret footballer blog had an interesting article I presume was about Berahino? Reckon he’ll sign for Spurs in the summer for money and a player or 2 going the other way. Doubt they’ll get over 20m if Pulis doesn’t pick him though. Saying that if he does and the guy gets 8-10 goals they might get more?
Reckon we’ll take lacazette for silly money in the summer.

  • 74 Bambams // Feb 2, 2016 at 11:55 AM

This is not me being negative and I am hopeful of collecting some wins but no matter how well our new signings start – our defence have to wake up and concentrate for the full match. This is not going to be easy to get out of.
Everton have torn us new ones a few times.
You just never know which Toon team will turn up.
Mitro, Perez, Doumbia, Wini, Shelvey, Sissoko, Townsend. ….Need to take the chances !!!

Can’t imagine we’ve seen the last of Thauvin either! No way does the club chase a player for 3 seasons to write him off after 4 months!
My guess, he’ll be back in the summer to have a full preseason with less pressure on him and less expectation. Pretty sure Sissoko will be off in the summer as hes done a few seasons now and probably is getting to the age where he needs to move if he ever wants champions league football. To be fair to the guy hes been here 3.5 years in the summer and has played in 3 relegation battles and 1 half season under pardew where we lost record breaking games.

  • 78 Mister Tuff // Feb 2, 2016 at 12:01 PM

Slank – if we stay up – probably should do – just. I think seeing that we now have the nucleus of a decent team -a far more intelligent effort is required to get the next batch of players (big summer signings) after a more scietific approach to get folk who will fit into the team -the missing jigsaw pieces. So we have players that compliment one another thus forming a better team.

Berahino – forget him now – Alex Pritchard went to WBA from Spurs for 6 month loan – clear sweetener for WBA so they sell Berahino to them in the summer.

  • 79 Mister Tuff // Feb 2, 2016 at 12:03 PM

I don’t want to be accused of siding with the recruitment team, but for all those complaining about us not signing a left back, bear in mind that we had an agreement to sign Sequeira on loan and were expecting him to arrive for his medical. When he didn’t arrive due to Mr. Nevilles hijacking of our deal we then appeared desperate in trying to get Enrique in. After that I think it was too late to sign anyone with sufficient quality.

  • 82 Mister Tuff // Feb 2, 2016 at 12:07 PM

I think that a representative of the fans should have the opportunity to let the board know our views on transfer matters. Someone from this blog, voted for by fellow bloggers would then be able to convey our thoughts to the club if it was made available to us.

Siqueira apparently waas told he was wanted for 6 months as back up.
Valencia offered him an 18 month deal – obvious where he would choose.
Club should have been quicker – start of window -to sort out this position – then time would have been available to get someone else.

  • 89 martoon // Feb 2, 2016 at 12:20 PM

Blackley and Brownlie – You still don’t get it do you?
I’ve no problem with you thinking that a person’s mental abilities reduce with age that is your opinion. What I found offensive was when you accused him of having Alzheimer’s – why you can’t just man up and admit you should not have used that term is beyond me – well actually I do know there are some people in this world who can never admit they were wrong or made a mistake and you are one of them!

  • 96 corkypants // Feb 2, 2016 at 12:41 PM

I think he’s talking about Jeremy peace the west brom chairman in this tweet it makes more sense

  • 97 BandB // Feb 2, 2016 at 12:49 PM

There’s been some gossip that Pulis isn’t playing Berahino because he wants to sell him to fund some Pulis-style signings, and that Peace doesn’t want to give Pulis £25m for Pulis-style signings.
The two seem not to be on the same page, and we may have been getting our encouragement to chase Berahino from the Pulis camp.
Pulls hasn’t got his way here, and it appears to be a vote of no confidence.
I fancy West Brom as dark horses to be the mid-table club that slips into the relegation fight this year.

  • 98 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 2, 2016 at 1:08 PM

His performance suggests to me that hes past it. Hes at an age when he may have alzheimers. Many people go to their graves and there’s no obvious sign they’ve got it. But many people have signs. Some very clever people who are getting on a bit are more prone to scammers and fraudsters because theyre getting old and the mental capabilities arent want they were. You can ignore all the science and thr hisory if you want.

It’s quite obvious that I’m not Carr’s physician. I’ve even made that point not that I should need to. How can I possibly claim to know what is happening to Carr’s brain? All I can do is give my opinion that his performance shows he’s getting old and he’s showing it.

I’m entitled to express that opinion. Other people like Reilly jump onnit but give no scientific or other evidence, just scorn and “well I think you’re wrong”. Not that I ever thought I would get dragged into the realm of scientific studies or pointing out the history that was cited by others was actually a spectacular own goal.

  • 99 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 2, 2016 at 1:12 PM

Alzheimers came into it because people seemed to suggest that it wasn’t a possibility or remotely likely that at Carr’s age his mental capabilities could be impaired. He doesn’t have to have alzheimers but to underperform as he does, but many people of his age do; and they’re just the ones who show obvious signs.

  • 100 Mister Tuff // Feb 2, 2016 at 1:14 PM

betty – clearly in view of what has emerged a 6 months deal for a LB was to tide us over to the summer – when a better player was going to be acquired on a long deal. Not sufficiently up to date though on who they may be looking at.

  • 101 spaghetti bandit // Feb 2, 2016 at 1:20 PM

  • 102 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 2, 2016 at 1:27 PM

Furthermore, I don’t consider it offensive to suggest that at Carr’s age his mental functioning may be deteriorating and to highlight that many people have alzheimers. Who was it who was upset and said it’s okay as long as he’s not a geriatric? Most often you don’t suddenly become a geriatric. One day you’re a fit and competent person and the next you’re a geriatric? It’s often a long process of gradual decline. I haven’t mocked anyone for having alzheimers. “Alzheimers” and “geriatrics” are words we use every day to describe certain realities of life.

  • 103 reilly // Feb 2, 2016 at 1:28 PM

i put up an article a few days ago from the secret footballer that was saying the same.
the WBA owner knows pulis game and all his dodgey dealings, thats why berahino wasnt sold.

  • 104 magscar // Feb 2, 2016 at 1:31 PM

Well now dust is settling I am reasonably satisfied with the transfer business IF they all come off which is never guaranteed.

Feel Shelvey will do but not sure whether Townsend is the real deal – he certainly looked so whilst on loan at QPR a few seasons ago, then back at Spurs and for England but it then went pear shaped and I don’t know why. Hopefully not simply the player but circumstances that a change of club can change?

On Saivet and Doumbia much depends on their adjustment to PL. Doumbia although struggling in Italy does seem to have scored in Champions League so here’s hoping he starts like a Cisse!!

Overall I am not sure there was much more we could do in this window ( I know it was largely a position we put ourselves in) and at least seem to have failed in certain areas after a number of good tries rather than simply being complacent.

Indications are that there may be a LB target more or less nailed on for the Summer and therefore only a short term cover was being sought – commonsense or too risky it’s your choice. My view is that with improvements in front of the back 4 we might have enough to manage through and it is a calculated gamble. If we can convert chances (and also make more) then the worry over clean sheets isn’t as all consuming as it has been when recently we have lost or drawn where play suggested we could have hoped for a draw or win respectively.

Striker was also apparent a position we aimed high on but came up short although fingers crossed Dombia can mitigate this.

Team building is often likened to a jigsaw with a player or 2 being regarded as the “missing bit”. In our case part of the problem was we seemed to have mislaid the lid and didn’t know what pieces (if any) we had missing or even if we had some mixed in from a totally different puzzle. Ashley may have found a lid – let’s hope it is the one we can work from and complete the picture next time around.

  • 105 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 2, 2016 at 1:35 PM

  • 107 Hail Wor Ashley // Feb 2, 2016 at 1:40 PM

Any team news yet for tomorrow night?

Colback and Dummet fit? Tiote in the country or not?

That’d be my team. Seen a lot of folks on here completely leave Colback out, not even giving him a bench spot. Ridiculous. He and Shelvey seemed to have an immediate understanding and ran like clockwork in their first game together and with a genuine playmaker next to him, Colback has a better understanding of his role.

Mitrovic doesn’t have the discipline to start away from home. If things don’t go his way from the start, he gets in a huff and there aren’t 50,000 there to roar him on, which I think greatly helps his game and fighting spirit. Needs to mature quick.

  • 108 LGFUAD21 // Feb 2, 2016 at 1:41 PM

It could be the dawn of a new era providing Mcclaren delivers.

If we dont improve then Ashley will take it that his wheeling dealing is a better way.

However if we show a marked improvement and finish somehwere around 13th I think it will be the proof for MA that we need to keep investing in these £13-15m type of players that can improve our squad.

    Your comment:
“To the author – in my experience a lot of people who do manual work retire early (in the context of this comparison) because their bodies are worn out/f***ed. With a high proprtion of them not living to enjoy their pensions”

I agree. Also, some of the cleverest people I’ve met are manual workers. And manual work is not inferior to office work. When I have a puncture and can’t get the wheel off, I’m not generally comforted by a solicitor or accountant turning up. I’m bloody grateful to someone who has the required skills and talents.

It could be that, rather than losing mental function, Carr wasn’t that sharp in the first place.
It’s not that he has fallen from some great height of career achievement.

I’m hoping that, rather than a new dawn, last summer represented the last time they tried to do things by the Ashley Doctrine, and Ashley is now considering a proper root and branch rethink.

Kind of pleased with the window. Madness not getting a LB in at all costs but other than that I guess its decent business. Hopefully our defensive nightmare over the last 2 seasons was a result of a poor midfield. We’ll sure to find out soon enough.

Struggling to see where the new lads would fit straight into the side without dropping players who probably deserve to be in there.

Would like to see this tomorrow though depending on fitness of a couple – 4-2-3-1

    ————- —-Shelvey———–Colback/saivet—————

    Then after subs: 4-3-3

    ————- —-Shelvey———–Colback/saivet—————

Think Perez deserves a place after the new contract and he’s sure to be buzzing but doesn’t play as well as a winger and would probably have a better time as a left side forward imo.

Transfer window was good; we spent money on improving first team areas of the pitch (as normal teams should do, especially in out predicament), although it wasn’t complete, as a quality centre half and left back were needed, and a another top centre forward.

Very happy with us giving Doumbia a shot though, hope he continues his usual goal scoring.

Hopefully this gives us a big boost and chances are actually finished off now. Serious pace in Sissoko, Townsend, and Doumbia could be eye-catching, especially as at least McClaren tries to implement a coaching style. Bit worried he might start just counter-attacking though after sitting back. Hope not, as you can counter without just sitting back.

Talented yes – but he is not a No 9 poacher/striker and isn’t worth anything like a fee with £20m in front of it

He’s a malcontent who feuds with managers (including Ewe Rosler) and has had only one decent season in the premiership in 14/15

Too much baggage. Too much gobbing off. Too much Twittering. Too high risk

I wouldn’t touch him with a shitty stick
