In A Must-Win Game – Newcastle Will Win

3:39 pm, Friday, February 5th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 199 Comments

It’s turning into a must-win game for Newcastle and Steve McClaren tomorrow against West Brom and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has given his view on how the game will go.

One thing we can count on is Tony Pulis’ side, as usual,  will make it very difficult tos core and that’s where Newcastle must be patient – but also must score.

We cannot win if we cannot score – and that could be a problem for us.

paul merson

Paul Merson – takes Newcastle to win

This is how Paul Merson has to say about the game:

This has the makings of a good game. West Brom under Tony Pulis rarely lose to sides at the bottom and they play well away from home.Saying that, I’ve got to go for Newcastle to get the win.

They’re at home, they’ve got all their new signings and they need to bounce back from their defeat at Everton.

It’s a must-win game for Newcastle, they’ll be thinking they haven’t got too many of these sort of games remaining.

What Newcastle have done this season in their inconsistent way is that after a disastrous display – like we had at Everton on Wednesday evening – we come back and give a good display.

On the other hand, after a really good display and a good win we usually go and put in an awful display and lose the next game – maybe that comes next week at Stamford Bridge if we can win tomorrow?

And we have lost five of the last seven games so it’s really time for a win tomorrow.

And if we don’t win tomorrow Mike Ashley will have to consider long and hard whether Steve McClaren will taking Newcastle down – and that would be an unmitigated disaster for the club and everybody associated with Newcastle United.

We hope Paul Merson will be right and we can win tomorrow – but a draw will not be good enough – we need the points.

However fans are not all that confident we can get the win tomorrow – although it is the majority choice.

Not looking forward to the match tomorrow we can’t score and we can’t keep a clean sheet.

i’d be tempted to play saivet at lb and put tiote in dm.

Berahino hat-trick, we don’t have a defence at best case let alone now, sad times

“Three Players Out Injured – Newcastle Short Of Players Again”

GOOD hope they score 3-0 against us…..relegation is what the management deserve.

Seeing fat Ash losing all that money will be soon enjoyable.

  • 8 G // Feb 5, 2016 at 4:25 PM

Croftus, agree, mentioned this morn that Saivet should play lb. He cant be any worse than Aarons there can he?

  • 9 hibbitt // Feb 5, 2016 at 4:29 PM

they had the chance to sort the problems with the back four but chose not too……….. big gamble ……..how many games will taylor last before he’s back in the treatment room …total mismanagement on behalf of the board even to the point of letting willo go !!!!

  • 10 Belfast // Feb 5, 2016 at 4:42 PM

    Attack attack attack.

    Or we’re ferked.

  • 11 firebug666 // Feb 5, 2016 at 4:49 PM

So Macca couldn’t envisage three defenders out, we all knew it would happen it always does, if you leave yourself light in a position sods law says you will suffer for it and we are.

They should have and could have brought in a couple of defenders, the whole fan base could see we needed them, but apparently the idiots that run the club know better!

And they wonder why we are in this mess.

  • 12 Bambams // Feb 5, 2016 at 4:53 PM

Got to start with two up front. ..
I am unsure if we should start with Perez and Mitro or to start Doumbia with one of them.
Would it be better to have Doumbia come on when their defence is tiring…..Do we go flat out with Mitro and Doumbia….
Right I have decided – Mitro and Doumbia to start then Perez off the bench.
Got to get at them and take some shots. Put them on their back foot.

I think it’s still too early to really panic, still games left but not many. I might panic after the game !
    Massive game this

  • 13 Wayayman // Feb 5, 2016 at 4:54 PM

Might be an idea to have Townsend as lb tomorrow, the lad can run and has more experience than Aarons who really shouldn’t have been asked to play there. That way him and Janmaat give us options attacking too.

Shelvey RM, Gini in cm with Saivet behind him, Aarons on the left, Mitro and Doumbia my lord up top. 442 at home against this lot is a must.

  • 14 SPRINGY // Feb 5, 2016 at 4:56 PM

either play the youngin from the under 21’s or goofy, aarons is hopeless there….i know it has’nt seemed to have worked when used recently but maybe 3 at the back is worth thinkin about….
    ———————————-elliott———————————
    ————janmaat————taylor————colo—————
    ————————tiote————-shelvey———————-
    sissoko————————-gini———————-townsend
    ———————perez———-mitro/doumbia—————–
start with mitro and see which of him and perez need replacing by doumbia…..probs get shit for this side, but just an idea to try keep players in there better positions.

  • 15 Graeme // Feb 5, 2016 at 4:59 PM

Is Doumbia actually fit to play??

  • 16 SPRINGY // Feb 5, 2016 at 5:00 PM

    graeme
he’s fit but has played since end of nov….so his sharpness will not be there and doubt he could last a full game

  • 17 firebug666 // Feb 5, 2016 at 5:03 PM

I think I would start with Mbabu at LB, he was decent for us there and definitely a better option to Aarons.

    Krul

    Janmaat, Taylor, Collo, Mbabu

    Perez, Saviet, Shelvey, Townsend

    Gini,

    Mitrovic / Doumbia

  • 18 hibbitt // Feb 5, 2016 at 5:03 PM

  • 19 SPRINGY // Feb 5, 2016 at 5:04 PM

mbabu is out for a few more weeks, or like you he would be my first choice.

  • 20 Bambams // Feb 5, 2016 at 5:04 PM

Doumbia is fast…That causes problems for any defence. Others can gain from possible mistakes.

    I hope

I’m sure I read somewhere he is back and training, might be wrong and he may be back training but not quite ready yet.

  • 22 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Feb 5, 2016 at 5:07 PM

hibbitt…what really surprise me is McM didn’t empathize how important a defender was. He’s the only one on the board with real knowledge of the game and what we need. If he didn’t think the defense needed upgrade and numbers then he’s just as much to blame.

  • 23 SPRINGY // Feb 5, 2016 at 5:09 PM

    hibbitt
you are probs right, but just trying to make something decent out of a pile of shite!lol…..aarons didnt look interested in the slightest to be at left back or good enough tbh…..hope its not him he’s thinking of playing there.

It was in The Mag mate so I don’t know how accurate the info is.

On the other hand Kevin Mbabu is fit and available, along with Steven Taylor, Steven McClaren indicating that the centre-back is set to start alongside Fabricio Coloccini.

firebug…I don’t like this 4-2-3-1 formation here. It has never worked. You need a completely different defence to make it work and the triangle in the centre need to be in tune.

I would rather Townsend was pushed further up and Perez substituted Sissoko. Then have a midfield three of Saivet, Wini and Shelvey.

  • 30 beermonkey // Feb 5, 2016 at 5:22 PM

how long is dummet out for

  • 31 firebug666 // Feb 5, 2016 at 5:28 PM

    jesper

I don’t like the 4-2-3-1 either, so I went for the 4-4-1-1, I put Perez in there instead of Sissoko because it’s my belief that if we are ever going to get the best from Sissoko he need to be shown he is not unpardonable, he only ever plays in games that suit him anyway.

While Perez does not have the strength of Sissoko, he offers something different on the right, he has clever feet, and when he is not forced to cut in side (when playing on the left) he will get crosses in from the right, and maybe a goal or two.

I just think playing him on the right will benefit him and the team, and give Sissoko the kick up the jacksie that he needs.

On 5th Feb 2012, a little known International footballer with no experience in the English Premier League, came on as a sub and scored the winning goal against Aston Villa. That same player then went on to score 11 goals in a span of 7 consecutive wins for Newcastle United beating West Brom, Norwich, Liverpool, Swansea, Chelsea and Stoke in the process.

  • 44 lesh // Feb 5, 2016 at 5:56 PM

The Guardian’s run a story, probably close to the reality and it’s another damning indictment of Charnley and Carr.

    http://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/feb/04/steve-mcclaren-newcastle-reign

Twice, two consecutive seasons, were at serious risk of the drop. Are those two determined to ruin the Club? It would seem so.

And, is Ashley aware of the seriousness of the situation? Last May he was ‘shocked’ to find out that we were flirting with relegation and Charnley should’ve been sacked then for not keeping him aware of the situation. Is he aware that we’re back in the schidt again?

Heads should role as the Club’s very own teletubbies (Charnley and Carr) have done it again!

I’m sorry to disagree but that Gaurdian article seems to fit with events as they panned out. Can you imagine McClaren saying nothing when everyone and their mother knows that our defence was and continues to be week.

Charnley and Carr should’ve been sacked last year and if I were in Ashley’s shoes I’d be acting to deal with the situation we’re in.

Surely Ashley doesn’t need the grief of being labelled incompetent or indifferent to the affairs of one of his businesses. Or does he thrive in negative media attention?

I’ve always wondered why this blog gets trolled so much, I’m guessing the same happens on every single blog? Or are we just unlucky? Because it’s got so much worse since I was last on.

  • 94 Ibizatoon // Feb 5, 2016 at 7:28 PM

Tsunki / Jesper…I do hope you two aren’t picking on the blog legend that is Belfa…no, I can’t even type it, it’s just too ridiculous.

A blog question…How many more “must win games” can we afford to lose and why must we win them? Would no one else miss the excitement of whether we can avoid the drop again? Granted it’s not as fun this time around, having spent a decent amount of cash this season and no Carver soundbites, but that shouldn’t take away from the experience.

  • 95 Tsunki // Feb 5, 2016 at 7:28 PM

Allardyce only has more hair due to his advantage in the surface area arena.

  • 96 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Feb 5, 2016 at 7:29 PM

You see, it’s just not working. Is this really your best? C’mon man surely you can do better? No? Awww that’s a shame, what a disappointment. But I guess you’re used to being a Disappointment, it’s OK though, you clearly prefer the company of the toon. Don’t be embarrassed, most mackems wish they could be as good as us.

  • 102 Ian Toon // Feb 5, 2016 at 7:33 PM

This is for those who can’t or choose not to recall the end of season 2011-2012. Ashley, Pardew and Graham Carr were in the ascendancy following a memorable season. There was such a time but where did it all go wrong and why weren’t lessons learnt. The omens were spelt out but looking back nobody was listening. We were going to buy big in expectation of a long run in the Europa. Certainly it was not seen as an excuse to underperform and struggle in the PL:
Hail Wor Ashley was a common comment long before the current blogger with the same name was seen on Ed’s blog:

Newcastle have good reason to be delighted with Pardew, ably assisted by Chief Scout Graham Carr. It is difficult to see how the season could have gone any better. That’s signified best by the support now being expressed by fans not just for Pardew himself but also for Mike Ashley’s general stewardship of the club, unthinkable not so long ago. Much of that support for Ashley would evaporate should Pardew & Carr drop the ball and Newcastle go back to merely wishing to stay clear of relegation worries however, which would be a shame in one sense. If you agree with Mike Ashley’s financial policy you can’t change your mind because of a bad result or a poor run of form. Running the club in a financially sustainable manner is either correct or it isn’t. We should be prepared to take whatever results come with the policy if that is what we want. It’s easy to support financial prudence when it produces better results than extravagance. Of course a sizeable proportion of fans don’t care about the financial health of the club, their only interest being on-pitch performances. The natural reaction to a drop in that performance is to demand that money be spent, whether the club can cover the outlay or not. That attitude, while understandable, is short-sighted. The only way to create long-term success is to build it over time in a sustainable manner. If we learned one thing from the Shepherd years it’s that no good comes from over-reaching ourselves.

  • 103 G // Feb 5, 2016 at 7:33 PM

I didnt think I was allowed to name him whilst the trial was ongoing

  • 104 Ibizatoon // Feb 5, 2016 at 7:35 PM

Tsunki…another crew/mob/rabble/throng/collective/inundation/party/etc thing has to be an organic thing, it cannot be forced.

Plus, there has to be a problem, and I don’t see one of those. Nope, all is good. Honest. Just looking forward to our “must win game” in Steves new mini league…I wonder how many games he’ll give us before we can judge him…

  • 105 Tsunki // Feb 5, 2016 at 7:37 PM

108 that’s neither news nor controversial. You seem to have run out of song lyric. Want us to post you some? I think I can find a one I seem to recall was all about your grandmother being your second concubine on your sisters side, something like that. By a wearside based minstrel whose name eludes me for the moment.

  • 106 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Feb 5, 2016 at 7:40 PM

The poor soul is running out of things to say, it said that yesterday.

  • 107 GeordieTwo // Feb 5, 2016 at 7:41 PM

It’s us against Norwich for 17th place. Talk about a mini-league Tsunki mate. Down to two teams. Either us or them will go down. I would love to be proven wrong but I see us fighting it out with Norwich right to the bitter end. And it will be bitter for one of the two. Harrumph.

  • 108 GeordieTwo // Feb 5, 2016 at 7:44 PM

It is definitely within our grasp. Two points behind Norwich with 14 to go. It’s ridiculous really. But we have played so poorly over 24 games and have so many crucial injuries (and a suspension) now that some are losing hope. A poor performance by us may finish McLaren. It would be Ashley’s last chance to have an impact this season with 13 matches left.

  • 109 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Feb 5, 2016 at 7:48 PM

    Newcastle 6 – 2 Norwich.

‘struggle’ it says! Bless. This is Newcastle not Sunde….. Eww, can’t even say it.

  • 110 Tsunki // Feb 5, 2016 at 7:58 PM

G2 if our mini league has two teams in it I don’t fancy our chances. But we could at least make runner up. Possibly.

  • 111 GeordieTwo // Feb 5, 2016 at 7:58 PM

11 wins and a few draws and we stay up. Or 10 wins and a lot of draws. If we can’t do that then we deserve to go down.

  • 112 GeordieTwo // Feb 5, 2016 at 8:01 PM

No, we have the players to beat Norwich in wor mini league Tsunki mate! I’m almost completely definite aboot that. Almost completely. We need to be strong for the club now. I’m even going to forget about Ashley until we survive. Come on lads and lasses! Support the team (but not Ashley)!

  • 113 Tsunki // Feb 5, 2016 at 8:01 PM

G2 I think our drawers may go down.

  • 114 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Feb 5, 2016 at 8:02 PM

We deserve to be relegated just judging on how we generally tend to exist in the league. I have always misunderstood what our point in this league was anyway, we never challenge for anything and we always flirt with relegation these days.

It’s hardly surprising that the bottom three teams are the ones with the worst owners.

“We didn’t mind conceding that (possession), and allowed that, we wanted to hit them on the break which is why we played Ayoze Perez and felt that the added speed would help us in that.

“We had one or two opportunities but it never really happened for us”

I think it was wrong to let a nervous Everton have possession and grow into the game

Why is there nothing to talk about? C’mon Geordies bring up a topic, after all I come on here to talk to you guys since there are none in Lancashire that I know… Except my Dad of course.

That was Attack Plan Y against Everton Belfast mate. This is Attack Plan Z. Totally different. This will be much better…. You’ll see.

    Damma

You expect 4 goals from us against one of the hardest teams to break down when we can’t even score a goal against one of the weakest?(Everton) I admire your naivety…

  • 193 GeordieTwo // Feb 5, 2016 at 9:40 PM

A lot of people get their Attack Plans confused. But not Steve. This definitely has a Z on the end of it. It’s an alphabetical thing that Steve uses apparently…… 😯

Lee Charnley has been asked to bring his boots with him to SJP tomorrow.
Apparently he played a full season at left back for Tow Law 4th team.

  • 196 Jib // Feb 5, 2016 at 9:54 PM

He was left back in the clubhouse 😀

  • 197 GeordieTwo // Feb 5, 2016 at 9:56 PM

Belfast – The Everton game it’s gone. Let it go. You really are the “blog legend”. You are Yossarian in Heller’s Catch 22 a likeable entertaining rogue. Lesser bloggers, you know who I mean, are just plain jealous and with good justification. You’ve got everything going for you including good judgment when it comes to the important things in life.
Every good wish and keep drawing the right conclusions.
