Last year at this time after 25 games played in the league, Leicester City were rock bottom of the league with only 17 points (Newcastle now have 24 points) and a goal difference of -18 and 4 points behind Burnley in second bottom place.
Nigel Pearson´s team got into even more trouble after 29 games played when they were bottom with only 19 points and 6 points behind third bottom Burnley.
Nigel Pearson – Leicester City manager last season
It´s now history that they made an amazing recovery and in their final nine games of the season they won seven and lost only one to finish up in 14th place on 41 points, two points and one place above Newcastle in the league.
So they only just survived last season in one of the greatest ever escapes from relegation ever.
Fast forward to today and Leicester City under new manager Claudio Ranieri are having one of the most amazing seasons in history and are top of the Premier League and what they did yesterday in the early game looked like it was impossible.
They went to Manchester City, probably their biggest rivals for the Premier League title and beat them 3-1 after being 1-0 up after 3 minutes and eventually 3-0 up – and they were the better side.
That´s even though the Manchester City team on show yesterday cost more than ten times what the Leicester City side cost.
The way to think of City is they are the best team money can buy and they will soon have the best manager money can buy when Pep Guardiola joins them next season.
In short money has brought them all their success.
Not so with Leicester City who are doing the Premier League a huge favor and turning things upside down (almost literally when you consider their league positions over the last 12 months) by showing that spending massive amounts on players doesn´t always guarantee success.
Just ask City neighbors Manchester United about that.
And it shows Newcastle´s constant mantra to their fans that we cannot compete with the top clubs is simply completely wrong.
And some wise spending by the lesser clubs means you can build a top side that can indeed compete with the biggest clubs.
Leicester City are proving that and at the moment they are amazingly 5 points clear at the top of the table with 53 points and Spurs are currently in second place.
There are two ways in which the Leicester City story can inspire Newcastle:
- We can get out of trouble with 13 games left in the season if we play like we did yesterday and also decide to turn up for away matches – it´s not impossible to avoid relegation and climb the table.
- With some good spending in the summer transfer window we could have a very good side next season and who knows we could be challenging for the top six at least.
That´s the hope and inspiration the amazing Leicester City story offers Newcastle United.
We hope Newcastle can survive and we hope Leicester City will win the Premier League this season.
It will do English football the world of good.
