Newcastle´s Injury Prone Players Could Leave This Summer

There´s a good article in the Chronicle today with a discussion on what to do with six players whose contracts run out this summer.

All but one of the players who will be hoping for new contracts seem to be injury prone and haven´t played too much for the club because of the injuries they have had repeatedly.

The six are Steven Taylor, Sylvain Marveaux, Rolando Aarons, Freddie Woodman, Gabby Obertan and Kevin Mbabu and the last two are still out injured and Steven Taylor and Rolando have only just returned to fitness after being out injured for much of the season.

Letting injury prone players leave could also have a positive impact on Newcastle´s injury record, which seems to be the worst of any Premier League club every single season and one of our players – Curtis Good – has been out injured for almost two years now.

The one that is easy to decide on positively is young goalkeeper Freddie Woodman and he should be given a new deal and why he hasn´t been given one yet is a concern.

Maybe he has indicated he wants to leave the club with Liverpool and Crystal Palace – where his father Andy is now coaching – are interested.

Sylvain Marveaux has managed to stay at Newcastle for five years since signing on in the summer of 2011 as a free agent from Rennes, but the last time he played was in early 2014 and he spent last season on loan at Guingamp where he played 24 times.

He has played only 57 times for Newcastle with two goals in five years and was told he could leave last summer and he will leave this summer.

Gabby Obertan is good when he´s in form but he´s out injured far too much and we don´t think it´s worth giving Obertan another deal at Newcastle – it will open up things to bring in some new players.

The two youngsters Rolando Aarons and Kevin Mbabu are two very good players who are both just 20 years old,  but they have had lots of problems with injuries.

If only Kevin was fit right now he could have been tried at left back and he looked good when he did play full back for the first team last year.

With the two lads being top prospects we would be surprised if both don´t get new deals at Newcastle this summer, but maybe only for a couple of years?

And the real difficult decision is with Steven Taylor who last year was out injured all but the August games, but he did his hamstring in after playing really well at Manchester United and only returned last Saturday and put in a good performance at the back against West Brom.

Steven is a good player when fit, but is hardly ever available – and since January of 2010 – he has played only 87 times for the club – an average of about 14 times a season.

So he´s an expensive player to have on the books given he doesn´t play much.

We know Steve McClaren is a big admirer of Steven,  so maybe he could get a one or two year deal – but there´s also a possibility the local lad could leave Newcastle.

If he picks up another injury shortly and is unable to play for us while Chancel Mbemba is out then he could leave this summer, but  if he keeps fit and plays like he did on Saturday for the rest of the season – he will probably get a new deal.

If we were pushed we would give new deals only to the youngsters Woodman, Mbabu and Aarons.
