Sky Sports News pundit Jamie Redknapp says that Newcastle have too many good players to be relegated – and even offered some praise for the Newcastle owner Mike Ashley – which is rare indeed.
But we had a decent squad right at the start of the season and certainly better than last season’s squad, but we have done worse than last season up to this point.
Jamie Redknapp – Ashley has put his money where his mouth is
This is what Jamie has said on Sky Sports about Newcastle’s ability to avoid relegation this summer:
“Shelvey can pull strings in that midfield. He is one of the best long passers in the game. They’ve got Georginio Wijnaldum as well who will play off of Aleksandar Mitrovic, on the right Moussa Sissoko and then Andros Townsend.
“I look at that Newcastle side and I think pace. I can see them counter attacking teams. They shouldn’t be in the position they are.”
“So fair play to Mike Ashley. He has put his money where his mouth is. Now it is up to the manager and the players to get them out of this hole.”
“I think they will stay up because they’ve got too many good players.”
The Newcastle owner has come in for some harsh criticism during his time on Tyneside and most of it has been deserved.
But only the harshest diehard Mike Ashley Out people will not give him some credit for loosening up the purse strings over the last seven months or so and spending over £80M on new players – the most of any club in the Premier League.
We’re still not sure what Mike Ashley’s intentions really are at Newcastle, but there has been a definite change in his willingness to spend Newcastle’s money.
And there will be plenty of that to spend in the future, as long as we stay in the Premier League.
Mike Ashley – Newcastle owner
One of the reasons for that is that Newcastle are a football club who are financially secure and stable these days.
The club can now spend considerable amounts of money on new players in future transfer windows, just like we have done in the last two windows.
It could be a bright future ahead for Newcastle United if only we can manage to survive this season.
