It’s worth thinking about it, but that’s as far as it goes.
Ig John Terry is allowed to leave Chelsea this summer Newcastle could go for a defender who has shown this season he can still produce the goods for The Blues.
And during Steve McClaren’s press conference today he was asked if he would like to sign Terry – if he does indeed become available this summer.
John Terry – Mr. Chelsea and one terrific defender
Steve managed John Terry when he was the England manager for a short and disastrous 16 months starting in 2007, so he knows all about the great John Terry.
This is how Steve answered that question:
“That’s their decision. I know JT well and he’s a great player and servant for Chelsea, he’s Mr Chelsea.”
“To leave and not to be given a contract must be a big wrench for him wherever he goes to. How far is the summer? A long time, a lot can happen between now and then.”
“So we’re not thinking about that. We’re just thinking about John Terry playing for Chelsea and how we can get past him.”
That’s a good answer from Steve.
John Terry has been one of the best players for England during his long and distinguished career and he was the England captain and captain of his home town club for many years during their tremendous successes.
Newcastle did want to sign Terry when Sir Bobby Robson was at the club, but that was just before Roman Abramovich bought the club in July, 2003.
John will have lots and lots of offers in the summer if he is a free agent – and there’s just no way he would want to join Newcastle.
There will be more attractive offers elsewhere from England and other countries too.
John still has a couple of years left of top class football if that’s what he wants to do, because he’s taken care of himself over the years.
