These Were Newcastle’s Best Three Players Yesterday

6:31 pm, Sunday, February 14th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 94 Comments

We are only now getting over the shock of what happened yesterday when the game at Chelsea was over after only 17 minutes when the Blues were 3-0 up.

We also have to realize that it wasn’t too surprising the Chelsea team laid off a bit in the second half and Newcastle did come back into the game a little – but of course by then we had lost the game.

But in particular it was good to see our two new Englishmen Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend having good games in the final 45 minutes and at least learning from the Everton debacle – which cannot be said for all the Newcastle players.

Andros also scored a terrific goal after 90 minutes after being given the ball by Jack Colback – and he made it look so easy – so maybe we will get more on the goalscoring side from the England International in future games – hope so.

Andros+Townsend+Chelsea+v+Newcastle+United+BaVBw_WOz71l

Andros Townsend in action yesterday – scored a great late goal

Townsend was our Man of the Match with Rob Elliot again playing well in goal and making some good saves and Rob just edges out Jonjo Shelvey in the voting with the England International play-maker putting  in a  good stint in the second half.

But this was another unacceptable performance on the road by Newcastle and if we continue this form and lack of fight away from St. James’ Park – we will most likely be relegated in May.

It’s simply not good enough and our players know it.

But it was good to see at least three of them sticking in and fighting for the cause, even though all was lost by then.

Other players in the Newcastle side should take the example set by Andros, Rob and Jonjo and play their hearts out in future games away from home.

We only have six of them left and six games at home.

Here are the results of the poll.

No one should have been man of the match

  • 2 OneAlanShearer // Feb 14, 2016 at 6:37 PM

Nobody. Nobody. Nobody was good yesterday. Shockingly poor. They owe us at leat one away result worth watching. Try Stoke.

  • 3 Jail for Ashley // Feb 14, 2016 at 6:38 PM

There should definitely be a no one selection.

  • 4 croftus5678 // Feb 14, 2016 at 6:41 PM

if it was not for our bloody cb’s we would have a great team imo !

mbemba is my exeption but the rest !!!! colo/saylor/lescalles/satka/good are all a let down.

the worst defence in the prem yet again ! (dunno if villa are worse off after today but you get my point)

i only very slighty put a fraction of the blame on the rest of the team as mitro does good def work when he should not imo/sissoko should but his heading and marking is p*&s poor for someone who used to be very highly praised for his defensive work and wijnaldum who runs a lot without having much effect on the defensive side of things imo.

a very basic skill is closing down and not giving them space or time on the ball ! we do it in home games but not away so pull your fingers out and go back to the library and book out the idiots guide to defending.

how on earth can we get 2244 votes for the MoM when in the last 24hrs we have only 54 posters / usernames………….. just a tad suspicious

  • 6 Belfast // Feb 14, 2016 at 6:44 PM

Good goal and his reaction after it summed up how I felt, so he gets my vote.

    Toon Tang,
Spurs are very much in the race

  • 15 banjax // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:04 PM

Who was the best player V Chelsea what a bloody stupid question – they were all rubbish. They all had away day gutlessness which has been repeated over and over again at away games and now that we are out of ALL cup competitions, Newcastle’s Manager and his players are not exactly worked off their feet. They now have even more time to ‘Prepare’ (to fail) for their matches than clubs like WBrom who are still in the FA cup and have injury problems to boot. It is obvious the players don’t respect McLaren and as such we need a new no nonsense leader who will get the players attitudes right and ready to perform for every match home and away. McLaren out !

  • 16 Lindisfarne // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:06 PM

That makes Sissoko ‘Muppet of the Match’

  • 17 Toon Tang // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:07 PM

Yer right Belfast, I’m doubled up with laughter here your such good value, a little scamp, you’re breaking up with Tsunki was the best thing that happened to the blog.

  • 20 AncientC // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:17 PM

I thought Mitro gave a good account of himself, how much more could he give for the cause, aside from sending John Terry packing and putting himself around is an isolated position.

Shelvey’s class was there for all to see… a few errors, but nothing drastic that cannot be tweaked. Townsend predictably gets bonus points for everything he did in the 90 minutes, for what he achieved in the 10 seconds that led to his goal.

I am waiting to see what happens at Stoke. I didn’t think for a moment we had a chance against Chelsea… if the side is going to have an off-day, it may as well be in one of the games where the side is most statistically likely to lose anyway.

Just to add, if we beat Stoke, the win record since Shelvey has signed would return to 50%.

  • 21 Jail for Ashley // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:18 PM

Surely defeat at Stoke has to see him sacked, how will they arrange the board meeting without telling him?

  • 24 NoahJ // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:25 PM

The True Geordie absolutely nailed it this week. mclaren should be culpable for not ensuring the basics were in place against chelsea; the setup was so unprepared- we didn’t look like we wanted to go forward, but we didn’t park the bus either… it was a complete mess.

I like confidence and positivity, but mclaren’s naiivety and downright ignorance to how desperate the situation is, is alarming. He’s still grinning and saying we’ll be up for it next week. This was how he was after the palace game, the watford game, the everton game. You can’t just keep pretending things will be ok…

our away form alone should be the reason he is dismissed.

  • 25 Lanzatoon42 // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:26 PM

The only vote missing of the above is the toon supporters paying hard earned cash to watch that rubbish. MCLAREN OUT NOW!!!

  • 29 JackButler // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:35 PM

Monk was shafted at Swansea simply because one of the higher up couldn’t keep it in his pants.

He’s a very good coach who was left in an impossible position

  • 30 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:36 PM

I want to see our goalkeeper shouting instructions and calling players out who’ve been responsible for him having to pick the ball out of the net. I think Shearer was talking about a lack of character. We need leaders. You want that from your goalkeeper, CB and captain at the very least.

  • 31 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:44 PM

    Jail
You say every man and his dog knows. However, most people are calling for Charnley and Carr to appoint another manager. What’s the point of that?

  • 32 croftus5678 // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:45 PM

i see arma got his 18th and 19th of his 26 app’s so far at the weekend !

  • 33 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:46 PM

Even if they acted, they wouldn’t appoint a new manager anyway. They’d look for a head coach.

  • 34 JackButler // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:48 PM

    Croftus

Makes you wonder if he could do the job for us that our other strikers can’t

  • 35 lochinvar // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:51 PM

Fraser Foster seems to be doing well – tall keeper who commands his space and is a physical presence that adds extra clout to the defence.
Dos Carr not recommend that we keep him – no didn’t think so he was sunning it in France.
    Another class decision from NUFC.

  • 36 Take A Chancel On Me // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:55 PM

Why did we let Forster go in the 1st place?

  • 37 Jail for Ashley // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:55 PM

    Lochinvar
To be fair to the club on Forster, it was him or Krul and he had a nightmare against Leeds one game, I think that sealed his fate.

  • 38 croftus5678 // Feb 14, 2016 at 7:59 PM

    @34 jb

aye i know the feeling ! i’m kinda glad he’s not in a failing team and his confidence is growing mind you but i suppose thats no good to us if we do go down.

  • 39 lochinvar // Feb 14, 2016 at 8:02 PM

McLaren is talking drivel ( previous article ) and that’s a sure sign he’s lost the plot.
Training camp ? Why don’t they go and play on the beach at Druridge Bay?
Team building ? How long have you got ?
Fitness ? Ha! What on earth have the players and coaches been doing since last July – dining out at Greggs ?

and where is Ashley in all this ?
If Man Ure have been courting Mourinhio on the quiet who has he ( Ashley ) been chatting up ? The silence is deafening !

  • 40 croftus5678 // Feb 14, 2016 at 8:04 PM

    @37 jfa

    i’ll second that.

we always seem to do good with keepers (prob cos they get so much practice with our cb’s)

and we do have 2 more young keepers who imo will become great great keepers also in woodman and woolston which one of the 2 will prob move on as they are not first choice !

  • 41 Blackley and Brownlie // Feb 14, 2016 at 8:06 PM

It’s Ashley who needs to act. The shit’s at his door. Charnley and Carr are looking like a right pair of chumps. Why would anyone want them to use tgeir expertise to choose another head coach? How many top head coaches are there out there?

  • 42 sparky55 // Feb 14, 2016 at 8:06 PM

I met forster in a glasgow hotel just after that performance against Barcelona and as most of you know he’s a tyne valley boy brought up near hexham where I used to live.

I asked him if he’d ever want to come back to play for newcastle and his response was an emphatic

    “In a flash”

If he does ever come back it’ll probably cost us 20 million but looking at his form he’s worth it.

I shook his hand when we finished chatting and his hands are like caterpillar dumper truck shovels…they’re fcuking massive.

Really nice lad…hope he does come back

  • 43 croftus5678 // Feb 14, 2016 at 8:07 PM

  • 46 JackButler // Feb 14, 2016 at 8:16 PM

Forster wanted first team football and Krul was always going to be ahead of him as at the time he was the better of the two, now I don’t know, his time at Celtic improved him massively

  • 47 JackButler // Feb 14, 2016 at 8:17 PM

There are many of us who don’t comment but vote. From yesterday’s match the poll got the ratings spot on. Tiote, Wini and Sisso were very poor. The latter looks a prime candidate for selling in the summer. Tiote looked as if he was on the slow boat to China. Wini needs a good rest and dropping for Stoke. Rolando should replace him in attack.
I thought Mitro tried his best but was hopelessly isolated. Taylor is not fully fit and is unlikely to have his contract renewed.
I don’t see Macca being sacked at present. Next five games must produce 3 wins if we are to have a chance.
Our away form reminds me of the sixties when we couldn’t win away but SJP was a fortress.

  • 56 21st Century Schizoid Man // Feb 14, 2016 at 8:45 PM

Most on this blog were happy to sell Forster when he left. I only remember a few posters agreeing with me he had the greater potential of the two.

Different circumstances mean it is different to judge how they both would have progressed, but Forster was always the more commanding and vocal of the two. Woolston and Woodman both have excellent potential, not seen as much of Pearson, but he seems to be rated by people who have.

    21st Century

Re Forster. We sold him to Celtic for £2.5m which was good money at the time for an untried kid.

Apparently, a clause was written into the transfer that we would receive 25% of any sell on value.

Celtic sold Forster to Southampton for £10m which meant we got a further £2.5m from the deal.

  • 76 Lilongwe Geordie // Feb 14, 2016 at 9:54 PM

    Beer,
I don’t think Woodman senior or junior would at this stage be shortsighted enough to sign for a team based on locality. Having said that, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him head to Spurs as a long term lloris replacement.

  • 81 Lilongwe Geordie // Feb 14, 2016 at 10:07 PM

    21st,
Most fans were more than happy to take Celtic’s money for him. it is rewriting history to say otherwise. Forster made a massive rick in a friendly at Leeds (I think) and after that most fans were happy to keep Krul as no.1 and get rid of Forster. Most probably hadn’t seen much of him as he excelled in the lower leagues for Norwich.

I’d probably say that losing Paul Barron when Hughton left has had a bigger impact on Krul’s future progression and it would likely have impacted on Forster as well. Forster has always been far more vocal, but when Forster left there was little between them other than that.

  • 82 Lilongwe Geordie // Feb 14, 2016 at 10:09 PM

    Beer,
I thought Man U’s Under 18’s are in the middle of their worst run of form since the 80’s? Lost 5 in a row before beating Stoke yesterday, and just lost 6 players from the Under 16’s and 15’s to Man City according to a City academy coach.

    You are correct.

Forster had been on loan and was still 3rd choice behind Krul and Harps. Perhaps having seen how few games Harps had played behind Given then Krul he could see the writing on the wall in terms of his own 1st team opportunities and wasn’t prepared to wait. As I recall matters he forced issue on basis of play me or sell me and there weren’t too many fans rallying to his cause at that time.

There was a similar play me or sell me with Thompson in KK’s first spell and off he went to Bolton.

Don’t think either party was wrong – players have to have ambition and clubs can’t give way to threats however well intended.

In my opinion Krul was some way ahead of Forster when we sold him. The thing is Krul has gone backwards in last 2 seasons whereas Forster gets better and better.
Remember alot of articles and interviews with coaches saying forster trained like a man possessed and had a stellar attitude and soaked up teaching like a sponge so no surprise hes been successful! Would love to see him back one day!
