Very good to see Papiss Cisse return to training as he has tweeted this out today.
All we need is for Papiss to match his form of four years ago, when he joined us from Freiburg SC and hit 13 goals in his first 14 appearances for the club and propelled us up to 5th place in the Premier League.
It could be so easy.
🙂

Don’t see any problem with these particular shteve comments, since Dummet has mostly done a decent job at LB, particularly because he has been the only one available for long periods of time. I think he would be a decent CB cover, but he does give his all, and makes less mistakes than Janmaat, and is out of position less then he is, too.
Macca has still proven himself a fcuk-up in every other way.

Comment #6If we rely on Cisse to save us we are doomed. There is as much chance of Cisse recovering his form of 4 years ago as there is of the Pope turning Protestant. The way this club has been run over the last three years, nobody could complain if we got relegated. The owner deserves it.

Comment #14Jail – Your a great one for myths and talk of halcyon days at the toon pre Ashley. Sergeant Hegarty and apple pie and ice cream. This is something from way back and mainly for fellow youngsters. Anyone over thirty should not really need to be reminded.

The day the promises had to stop
by Denis Cassidy
As calls for improved governance of football clubs continue to be made, Denis Cassidy’s experiences after being appointed a non-executive director of Newcastle United in 1997 give an illustration of just what can go wrong. He remained in position for 20 months, during a period which spanned the removal of Kenny Dalglish and appointment of Ruud Gullit as well as the News of the World undercover sting which forced the owners Freddy Shepherd and Douglas Hall to leave the board for a short time.
Despite the inside track he can provide, the book itself is a mixed bag. Though it’s styled as an attempt to show how the creation of the Premier League has affected the game in England, much of the book sets the scene for the section describing events during the short period Cassidy was on the board, and concludes with a run down of his thoughts on how to ensure success. Alex Ferguson’s views on success might prick up a few more ears, ?of course.
That’s not to say that there isn’t interest in the rest of the book. Cassidy’s insider knowledge isn’t limited to the period of his tenure on the board and his excellent contacts mean the reader is often left wanting to hear more. At one point, he reports meeting Lord Taylor just after the delivery of the report which changed English football post-Hillsborough, frustratingly without any record of the conversation.
It’s that 20-month period in the boardroom where the book comes to life, however. Though current owner Mike Ashley doesn’t escape criticism, Cassidy clearly disapproves of the way the Shepherds and Halls ran Newcastle; he calls them “vandals” at the point they are trying to force their way back into control of the plc board. He suggests John Hall used the club first as a promotional vehicle for his own regional interests then later as a cash cow for his other businesses. Cassidy points out that Newcastle abandoned corporate governance best practice when they removed independent directors from the board in favour of the majority shareholders’ nominees. The Shepherds and Halls are painted as draining the club to the point of financial chaos, to their own personal benefit.
The final implied criticism, left to an appendix on the last page, is both the largest and via its format least open to argument. Without commentary, it’s an account detailing how much was taken from the club by the Hall and Shepherd families in their time at the club between 1996 and 2007. The total comes to nearly £144 million. As Cassidy succinctly puts it earlier: “Did their performance over that period justify such rewards?”

Though uninterested I disagree with when I see him he’s often the only on not hiding when we are in the crap, always looking for the ball to the point where he ends up in our box

Comment #25Ian I fear that quoting a former board members memoirs is all right but in context of how other clubs were run were they outstandingly different to any other greedy club owners? And their greed was not without the benefits of a vastly improved stadium and facilities, top class football of European standard and a reasonably respected name in football. Swings and roundabouts. We all know the stories of disdain that the previous owners had for the punters and local folk, but in their time we did indeed enjoy heady days. That is also one of the least disputable facts. I’d take their approach to ambition over the bloated pupal mass that runs the show now ha ha sorry got a bit Apoplectic there for a moment…

Freddy Shepherd was hardly skeletal.
You are basically saying what I always suspected , that for you , success on the field excuses anything.
It’s a good job with your stance , that Pol Pot and Sadaam Hussein weren’t in the market for a footy club.

Comment #32Oh dear oh dear – no, no, no. Jib Jibberish you have again ventured into that area which causes you some difficulty and misunderstanding (apart from football that is) I speak of European Languages.
I recently had to put you right about some Spanish grammar – now I see you have ventured again into languages, French this time, and posted something which is completely erroneous – in respect of the word marquee – meaning a large tent.
There is nothing wrong at all in folk trying to educate themselves by use of the internet but really from the standpoint of your profession -a lecturer in Modern European History, an educator should not be publishing erroneous items publicly when, and I’m sorry to say this -they know nothing of the subject they are talking about thus spreading duff info.
I’ll prepare some languages notes hopefully later on to illustrate where you went wrong.

Cod are pelagic or open sea shoal fish.
Flounders are closer to shore individual flatfish
We do eat flatfish , a relative of the flounder we call sole .
Much sweeter taste than cod or haddock
