Newcastle’s transfer targets will be totally different if we take the drop this season and not only will we have to offload some players like Moussa Sissoko and Gini Wijnaldum, but we will have to bring in other players – especially some defenders – if we are to have any chance of getting out of the Championship at the first attempt, as Chris Hughton brilliantly did for the club in the 2009-2010 season.
So assuming we stay in the Premier league we have been strangely linked with Arsenal reserve goalkeeper David Ospina as a summer target, who played so well for the Arsenal first team last season.
But then Petr Cech arrived and David has not seen much playing time at all this season – in fact only 4 appearances in total.
David Ospina – Arsenal’s reserve goalkeeper
The news is being reported by Football Insider but with Rob Elliot being one of our best players this term and Tim Krul hopefully back in pre-season, we seem to have two top goalkeepers for next season who can fight it out for who gets the goalkeeper jersey next season.
Apparently the information is supposed to be from inside the club and Newcastle are interested in the 62 times capped Colombian International who at 27 would be a bargain buy at £4M.
That’s not bad use of £4M, but we need a center-back and a left back at least to build up the Newcastle’s defense this summer – whichever league we will play in next season.
Arsene Wenger was full of praise for Ospina last season but when Arsene got the opportunity to sign Petr Cech from Chelsea he had to go for him and Cech has been outstanding for Arsenal and shows how important a top goalkeeper is to a massive club like Arsenal.
If Newcastle do survive and we are still a Premier League side come the end of the season, there needs to be some big changes made at Newcastle and even with the personnel who make up the Newcastle Board of Directors.
They have failed miserably with their appointment of Steve McClaren as head coach and the use of £81M in transfer funds that was surprisingly shelled out by owner Mike Ashley.
If Mike leaves the same Board and the same head coach in place and spends another £81M this summer – there’s nothing that says we will be too much better next season.
It would be hard to say that McClaren has made good use of the players he has had available this season with Newcastle 3rd bottom of the league at the moment.
Changes need to be made and Mike Ashley just hasn’t got good enough people running the club for him – especially now he seems willing to spend some of Newcastle’s money.
As far as Ospina is concerned why not buy him for £4M and he could even become the number one goalkeeper at the club.
That’s even if Tim Krul and Rob Elliot stay at Newcastle – and we have to bring in new defenders in the summer and not just the favorite players of Chief Scout Graham Carr – like Florian Thauvin who Graham had been after for about four years.
What do you think?

Comment #16We’re not closing down like a unit, not attacking like a unit and we’re not defending like a unit. On top of that the passing acc is incredible poor.
This team lead by McClaren will not stay up.

Comment #19It was rumoured during the summer that Krul was looking at this season as his last at the Toon.
His injury might put that back but if he has had offers …..
Elliott has done well but I still would rather have a Krul or Forster between the sticks.

Comment #20So negative we are yawnworthy.
So many backward passes, so little quick link-up play and a complete lack of flair.
It looks more like a pre-season friendly.
Woeful, just like McLaren’s tactics

Comment #21Very poor showing. Shelvey passing backwards most of the time today. Back four not being tested yet looking shaky as usual, Darlow the same, looks nervous, not assured at all.
Going forward we look lost. Hopeful passes between Janmaat and Townsend leading to nothing. The team has no composure and no balance. We look unimaginative and struggle to create clear cut chances. Things aten’t looking good for us. Be this a friendly or not we look hopeless. Very worrying indeed.

I’m sure I’ve seen this all before!
He needs to have as near to his starting 11 for the second half coz they’re the ones that might keep us up, might!!!

Our players for the most part look like a bunch of strangers, not lads who’ve been training and playing together week-in week-out for months
