Shelvey Captains Newcastle Against Lillestrom – Doumbia Starts

Newcastle play Lillestrom this afternoon in a friendly in La Manga and Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren has just named his side for the game and captaining Newcastle for the first time is new arrival Jonjo Shelvey who apparently has been vocal both on and off the field since he arrived last month from Swansea.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Karl Darlow; Daryl Janmaat, Steven Taylor, Jamaal Lascelles, Liam Gibson; Henri Saivet, Jonjo Shelvey (c); Andros Townsend, Georginio Wijnaldum, Ayoze Perez; Seydou Doumbia
Substitutes: Freddie Woodman, Jamie Sterry, Callum Williams, Fabricio Coloccini, Daniel Barlaser, Moussa Sissoko, Yoan Gouffran, Rolando Aarons, Emmanuel Riviere

Lillestrom (4-2-3-1): Arnold Origi; Hakon Skogseid, Marius Amundsen, Frode Kippe, Simen Kind Mikalsen; Malaury Martin, Bonke Innocent; Bassel Jradi, Erling Knudtzon, Jorgen Kolstad; Fred Friday
Substitutes: Jacob Faye-Lund, Martin Falkeborn, Ole Martin Rindaroy, Erik Brenden, Petter Mathias Olsen, Sheriff Sinyan, Arni Vilhjalmsson

Referee: Dag Vidar Hafsas

It’s good to see Seydou Doumbia get a start and we suppose there would be a buzz after the game if the Ivory Coast International was able to score – and especially if he looks a lot fitter than he’s looked since he arrived last month.

New signing Henri Saivet gets a start and young 6’1″ tall local lad Liam Gibson starts at left back for Newcastle – and it’s a big opportunity for Liam to show what he can do.

It’s the old 4-2-3-1 formation with Townsend and Perez the wingers – and Gini Wijnaldum in the number 10 role with Doumbia the lone striker up front.

Jamaal Lascelles is at center-back and the youngsters has looked good recently when playing in the first team.

Comments welcome.

Shelvey captain, why not! What sort of hold has Colo got over this club anyway, it startles me the bloke is still here, that in itself is atrocious management, he gets targeted time and again as the week link by other clubs imo, and daft Saylor, for Christmas sake just get rid of the loon, until these areas are addressed we will continue to struggle.

Glad Doumbia starts. Are there any links for the game??

Lascelles is LB according to the team sheet Gibson CB

Shelvey’s got to be a more vocal captain than Colo and his commitment to that role could be the catalyst that improves his away form and therefore results.

Where’s Anita? I’d have thought that he’d be better bet at LB than young Gibson?

Game’s being shown on Norwegian TV2 Sports. This is a link. But honestly don’t know if it’s for real.

Janmaat and Shelvey seem to have built up a bit of rapport, I have noticed them sticking up for each other during games. That is the kind of attitude that needs to infect the rest of the side.

Interesting that Dummett, Anita, Colback, De Jong and Tiote play no part at all today. Doesn’t look like any of them are fit enough.
