Benitez On His Way To Newcastle For Unveiling

1:23 pm, Friday, March 11th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 142 Comments

The Mail is reporting that Rafa Benitez is on his way to Newcastle and hopefully will meet with Lee Charnley and maybe even Mike Ashley later today or tomorrow.

With Newcastle known to travel at a snail’s pace – and that’s only on good days – the unveiling is likely to happen tomorrow.

But is is very important that Rafa gets down to work quickly and it looks like he will be in charge of the team for Monday night’s game at league leaders Leicester City – and we’ll maybe even have a chance of taking something from that game.

Rafa Benitez – This is what it could look like tomorrow
Taken from a tweet of a very creative Newcastle fan

Tomorrow is when the players report back for training, so hopefully Rafa and the new coaching staff will be ready and waiting for them.

With tomorrow being a Saturday we may well see some fans at Darsley Park to potentially welcome Rafa Benitez as he attempts to save us from relegation – although he’s not exactly used to managing teams at the bottom of league table – only this at the top.

Rafa is the best manager we have had since Sir Bobby Robson was sacked in late August, 2004 – one day before I retired – if only I had known.

🙂

The Tyne Wear derby is a week on Sunday, but then Rafa will have two weeks to work with the team before the relegation 6 pointer at Norwich City on Saturday 2nd September.

Assuming Rafa signs and Newcastle don’t manage to screw it up – then it will be very important to put aside the antics of this week and get right behind the manager and the players.

Newcastle fans can helps the team produce a mini miracle and save our season.

It will be worth it if we can survive and have Rafa in charge of the transfers in the summer.

We expect Rafa to be welcomed with open arms by fans as our potential savior – and we must survive this season in the Premier League now that this has happened.

The press may even like us with Rafa in charge.

Well I’m getting carried away again.

    Firebug

I’m still a little worried it’s the right man at the wrong time, class manager and in the summer would have been a dream appointment, now I’m not sure he’s the man for the job.

a new manager syndrome win on Monday and a derby win using the scums tactic will make me feel a little better but ATM I’m just praying it isn’t to late.

    Ashley out!

  • 4 Shadow_Shearer // Mar 11, 2016 at 1:29 PM

Macca should have walked weeks ago to save his reputation.

I can still see disappointment. Next news will be Ian Cathro to take over, after talks with benitez broke down.

Anybody fancy a punt at David moyes. They say he’s good for steadying the ship.

I think this will be the biggest shake up these players will ever see in their careers. The have the quality, we have seen in in bit and bobs, Benitez will bring them confidence and consistency.

“Ok, lads. This is Rafa. You may know him from such things as winning Champions league, deomestic cups, europa league(uefa cup at the time) and the world club cup. If you cant pull your finger out and perform for this guy, then you will never be footballers as long as you have holes in your ar$es.”

As shadow says, he let his bet ride too long, should have cashed out before the transfer window when he knew he was on a bad one.

thats the way it looks to me….they’ve held on to macca all week so they had an option if unsuccessful….hopefully anyway.

There is a bright side to everything lads and lasses, in this case, “the only way is up”.

I think Rafa will get us the points we need, the derby will be spicy too as Rafa and fat Sam dislike each other intensely so I expect him by then to have the players rallied and fire up to kick some makem butt.

So so happy today, think I have a bottle on my home brew stout.

  • 18 Shadow_Shearer // Mar 11, 2016 at 1:40 PM

I wonder if benitez knows how to play attractive football. Mind you that mite be a little greedy.

A man whos clever with his tactics is what we need. Not a man who’s good at developing youngsters, so the club can sell on at profit price.

Got a feeling fans will start moaning his football is boring after a while, if he does indeed sign for us. As long as he brings success.

I remember ppl telling Liverpool fans back in the rafa days, your a cup team. Sure would be nice to have a cup run here.

Sorry to pish in your chip fat, fellow fans, but young Rafa is not a miracle worker. The poor bloke will have the same deficient tool set as Makro.

This appointment, if it fails, should be the last of its sort. No more big time names. I doubt NUFC will ever get true success until it builds long term in an understated way with a little known, true footballing guy as manager. The club needs sorting out from the bottom up as well as from the top down.

He’s confident if he accepts a three year deal
At least two of those could be spent in the championship.

  • 49 AncientC // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:13 PM

I will not be instantly won over if Benitez arrives. He has been hit and miss throughout his management career, but when it is hit – admittedly, he normally wins silverware.

He could be absolutely perfect for this club, or the complete wrong fit. I remember Dalglish coming in and trying to make the side difficult to beat, there is something about the club that does not seem to respond well to defensive, or if you prefer, ‘balanced’ tactics.

Brendan Rodgers was the manager that I wanted, but fans generally know what is good for their club, so I will defer to the majority opinion on this one.

  • 50 beermonkey // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:14 PM

just reading an article in the sun (yes i know)

and they said this about colo

The Argentine has been symptomatic of the problems at Newcastle for some time.

He is seen as a trouble maker and many at the club wanted him out last summer.

Yet, having effectively gone on strike in pre-season, Coloccini ended up being given a new deal, as he was a cheap option and they were struggling to get other centre-backs through the door.

And it came back to bite McClaren in spectacular fashion, when his skipper knifed him the back last week by telling training ground staff how he could not believe his boss had not yet been sacked.

i have not heard that about him any1 else

Some NUFC fans turning their noses up at Rafa and questioning his record. Some saying they’d prefer Pearson and the like. Lost causes they are. Something is definitely wrong. Poor Rafa has got a shit defence, no natural goalscorer and a dubious midfield. He’s got very little time to have any influence. However, his appointment should give the players and the fans a massive lift. It’s vital he rides the wave of optimism. The tension for the derby is massive already.

Hail Wor Ashley, Benitez didn’t last very long at Inter Milan.

He has managed two clubs in a similar position to ours, this is how the story went:

“He was appointed manager of Real Valladolid for the 1995–96 season, but was sacked after only two wins in 23 games with the club bottom of the Primera División. During the 1996–97 season, Benítez took charge at Osasuna in the Segunda División, but after only nine games and one win, he was sacked.”

Put him in charge of a top club, sure, he may actually do the possible and win something. He spent a lot at Liverpool and went stale fast. Inter Milan was like a revolving door. His most recent job which people are crowing about, the Real Madrid post… the fans despised his tactics and the players couldn’t wait to get rid of him.

If Benitez was as good as his CV suggests, he wouldn’t be negotiating a contract right now for between £2 and £3 million per year.

  • 71 martoon // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:29 PM

As I said yesterday we only need to get 2 more points than the makems in our remaining games which I think is quite possible.

  • 72 Hail Wor Ashley // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:29 PM

Given Rafa has the vast majority of approval from fans, unlike Pardew, Schteve and Carver, it makes it a lot harder for the players to down tools knowing the fans are with the manager 100% from the off. Schteve was out of his depth, we all knew it and so did the players, whether intentionally or not, this led them to lacklustre performances because their was little belief and respect to begin with and when it ran out that just exacerbated the situation brought about by poor management.

Rafa arrived at st James park with a huge smile on his face and a look of confidence that he can steer us to safety.
This in my opinion would be our best signing in a long long time, just a shame that its took us being on the edge of the abyss for season after season for a shake up to begin. Hopefully the deal will be announced soon and I hope that Rafa gets to bring in his own staff and that reports are true that he will have full reign over the transfers(if he pulls off the great escape of course). Now we need news of that sorry excuse for a managing director being shown the door.
I’m really ill at the moment and this has managed to bring a smile to my face, let’s hope it’s not a premature one.

    Howay the Rafa lol

  • 98 Barton // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:42 PM

Even after the last few days off media reporting,i still did not think we would pull it off,am in shock, eating my bait and befor I knew it I’d spat my custard all over the cat.

  • 99 clinath@ed // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:42 PM

As someone has already said…id rather go down with Rafa, than stay up with SM.

  • 100 AncientC // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:43 PM

“He could be absolutely perfect for this club, or the complete wrong fit.”

Apparently that is being a doom merchant. You had better work on those reading comprehension skills, Hail Wor Ashley.

On a more positive note, your nickname will come to serve as some special symbolism for some – now that the saviour has arrived.

Let’s hope Rafa meets up with Ashley before anyone else.

Then and after a constructive conversation with Ashley, Rafa can meet Charnley. He’ll soon get the measure of the useless pillock before he’s moved on.

  • 103 lesh // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:45 PM

Anyone seen the Ashleycopter at the training ground SJP?

  • 104 firebug666 // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:46 PM

    Blackley

Ahhh I letting myself in for this but…….

Mitrovic, will score with confidence if he get the right service, and I don’t mean one or two chances a match.

Perez, will make a goal from anywhere in or around the box, again if he get the service.

Cisse, Scored for fun when he first came, been poor since then but so has everyone else, give him the ball in the box and he will score.

“In the meejia.” Dummy, I see you’re one of those I described yesterday. Believe anything the meejia put out that fits your narrative, ignore the rest and the fact the media are primarily stirrers and speculators.

No more responses from me, sour puss. I’m enjoying the sunshine and this appointment today thanks!

  • 106 Shadow_Shearer // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:47 PM

I hear benitez has now been confirmed as manager

  • 107 lesh // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:48 PM

If Rafa’s not been seen in Newcastle, might he have met up with Ashley in London then to be shunted up t’north?

    Wishful thinking, that’s all.

  • 108 lochinvar // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:49 PM

Wake up Ed – I know you’re 8 hours or so away and probably it’s the middle of the night where you are butt he’s not arriving…..he’s already here actually here.

I live 30 miles from Town and can feel the glow from here…

How long do think before we will abbreviate Rafa as FSW?

    Pompous berk

Keep it up Jib. I was trying you be civil to you but you continue growing those ears.

  • 111 AncientC // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:51 PM

Hail Wor Ashley – The media obviously always wrong, which is why the reports of McClaren being fired and Benitez coming in were so inaccurate.

Clearly the truth isn’t always reported, but it isn’t difficult to fact check, look up the reliability of sources, and of course… quotations.

Anyways, let’s put this one to rest. We can agree that the Real Madrid players respected Benitez and there was no friction in camp, on your say so.

  • 112 lesh // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:51 PM

    Ah

Rafa’s at SJP and that’ll teach me to read all posts before I post a comment that’s way out of date.

    Yes, I know……

Will eagerly anticipate Rafa’s first team selection on monday

  • 115 lochinvar // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:51 PM

    Clear out has started….official

Newcastle United is delighted to announce the appointment of Rafa Benitez as the Club’s new manager.
Benitez joins United on an initial three-year deal.
The Club can also confirm the appointment of Fabio Pecchia, Francisco de Míguel Moreno, Antonio Gómez Pérez, who will join Ian Cathro and Simon Smith to form Benitez’s coaching team.

Paul Simpson, Alessandro Schoenmaker and Steve Black will part company with the club with immediate effect.

  • 116 Shadow_Shearer // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:52 PM

Benitez says he is committed to a legendary English club.

    I’m liking him already.

  • 117 ToonRich // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:54 PM

“initial 3-year deal”…no mention of a walk out clause if we do go down??

I hope if our luck doesnt change and we drop, that he hangs around and rebuilds us.

  • 118 Carryingcoals // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:54 PM

  • 121 Jail for Ashley // Mar 11, 2016 at 2:58 PM

    Tsunki,
For some reason Jibberish has taken the news of signing one of the best managers in the world after backing Mclaren until the Bournemouth game quite aggresively, I suppose if we’d scraped a win against our relegation rivals “Macca” would still be here and Jibberish would be saying I told you so.

If he brings success here, he will be a king.

  • 124 firebug666 // Mar 11, 2016 at 3:01 PM

Hopefully he will asses the players over the weekend, give Leicester a good game on Monday, reassess the players through the week, set up a system that works for them, and give the makems a f****ing good tanking next week.

  • 125 toon kk // Mar 11, 2016 at 3:01 PM

Don’t put words in my mouth. Your demonstrating your juvenile grasp of nuance again. “Perfect fit for club or the complete wrong fit.”(whatever that nonsense statement means). “Madrid players couldn’t wait to get rid of him.” “,,,players respected Benitez and there was no friction in the camp.”.

There are many shades of grey and when it comes Benitez career, he’s one of the more shiny, lustrous shades.

Comprendes lo que te estoy diciendo?

  • 132 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Mar 11, 2016 at 3:04 PM

I am sure if it is at all possible for our players to survive, then rafa can get them to do so. Left wayyyy later than it should have been, but the right thing has eventually happened

Fcukin over the moon with this, a big two fingers up to your TDSarfs, Boy done Good etc that have always preached that we are an average club who deserve our lot, we could have had a top manager in place of Pardew, Carver and this latest patsy, finally it’s taken a realisation of monies lost to get what we deserve.

“He could be absolutely perfect for this club, or the complete wrong fit.” Is how I termed it Hail.

Not “Perfect fit for club or the complete wrong fit.” Again, reading comprehension, I would recommend cut + paste if you have problems with your memory.

Hail, if you could stay on topic, that would also help.

  • 140 AncientC // Mar 11, 2016 at 3:11 PM

Can you believe it even now countless so called fans are writing Benitez off and you call yourself Toon supporters. Don’t say you rather have the Wally trouble no matter what the club do the moaners will always be there let us just hope that with strong support from the real Geordie faithful the players respond and start to show bottle and fight. Makes a change us getting a new manager just before the Derby unless the Mackems panic and sack big Sam. Just get behind the team and the manager and frighten the living daylights out of any opposition that comes to Geordieland SJP with the true Geordie roar that you can hear in Gateshead as in times gone by. Everyone in the toon knew when we scored the whole city shook to its foundations.
