Rafa Benitez has just announced the Newcastle team for his very first game in charge of Newcastle United against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium tonight and Anita, Perez. Colback and Mitrovic are all in the starting line-up.
Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Rob Elliot; Daryl Janmaat, Steven Taylor, Jamaal Lascelles, Jack Colback; Vurnon Anita, Jonjo Shelvey (c); Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum, Ayoze Perez; Aleksandar Mitrovic
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Jamie Sterry, Henri Saivet, Siem de Jong, Andros Townsend, Emmanuel Riviere, Seydou Doumbia
Referee: Craig Pawson (South Yorkshire)
It’s the familiar 4-3-3-1 formation with Perez preferred to Andros Townsend who is on the bench as is young Jamie Sterry.
Darlow, Saivet, de Jong, Riviere and Doumbia are the others on the bench tonight with Shelvey again the captain.
This is the first time back for Siem de Jong who may even get a run-out in the second half, after the Dutchman has now recovered from that serious eye injury.
Jack Colback, as expected, comes in at left back for the injured Paul Dummett.
Anita gets the chance to play the defensive midfield role in the center of the park alongside the captain, after just returning from injury.
We need to start picking up points now and with Rafa in charge, hopefully we will start doing that tonight.
A point out of this game would be a very good point.
This is what Rafa said about the lead in to this game:
“We only have three sessions before the first game so it’s going to be difficult against the team at the top of the table. We’ve got a good staff here who are giving us all of the information that we need to prepare so hopefully we can do it.”
“From what I’ve seen I know we have a very good group of players so we need to give them confidence and from them, I will expect 100% in every game.” “The players want to impress the new manager and they have the ability to do so.”
“For now we have to be calm, but not too calm, and approach the games one at a time.” “Leicester is up next so all of our concentration is on this game.” “I know Ranieri well and he’s doing a great job at Leicester.”
“I think it’s great for the Premier League to have a team like Leicester at the top of the table. It shows that if you do things the right way, you can win anything.”
“They are fantastic and after Monday’s game, I wish them to win the Premier League.” “I will be there in the dugout. I like to be on the pitch with my players and in the dressing room.”
“I like to try to motivate them and give them instructions. From now I am 100% focused and ready.”
About 70% of fans think we can get something out of this game.
