It Doesn’t Look Good For Newcastle

10:14 pm, Saturday, March 19th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 66 Comments

The teams in 4th bottom and 5th bottom places in the Premier League both won their Premier League games today and moved 3 points further ahead of Newcastle.

Norwich had a good but surprising 1-0 win at West Brom and Swansea won 1-0 at home against bottom club Aston Villa.

That was Swansea’s third win in the last four games and Norwich have now picked up 4 points in their last two games.

Rafa Benitez – Newcastle manager

The Canaries are now 5  points ahead of Newcastle in 4th bottom place on 29 points and Swansea move to 36 points and a full 12 points ahead of Newcastle in 6th bottom place.

Newcastle have two games in hand on both these clubs.

Crystal Place lost again today – this time 1-0 at home to league leaders Leicester – and moved down to 5th bottom place on 33 points.

In their 11 league games this year Crystal Palace have only 2 points with draws at home to Swansea and at Sunderland and 9 defeats – so they don’t look in good shape at all.

Newcastle have gained 8 points over the last 11 league games on Palace, but we have also lost our last four games.

Here’s what the bottom places look like after today’s games.

Crystal Palace38-1242
19 Norwich38-2834
20Aston Villa38-4917

The derby game between Newcastle and Sunderland becomes even bigger tomorrow – if that’s possible –  with both north-east clubs now second and third bottom of the league.

A defeat for Newcastle tomorrow would put us in even further trouble and we simply must win this game.

How Will Newcastle Fare Against Sunderland?

I am in fact the most virtuous poster on this blog. Now that’s settled, football anybody?

  • 2 welshgeordie9 // Mar 19, 2016 at 10:19 PM

But I’m best comedian on here, you can’t top that.

  • 3 jane // Mar 19, 2016 at 10:21 PM

I know the most about football 🙂

  • 4 welshgeordie9 // Mar 19, 2016 at 10:21 PM

On a a serious note though, looking at the table, there’s more pressure on the players to get something out of tomorrow’s match than ever before.

  • 5 martoon // Mar 19, 2016 at 10:22 PM

JFA – from last topic yes I did see it and while it was in bad taste it wasn’t sick like Tuff’s comment. My point is instead of simply apologising he pathetically tries to deflect attention on to Jib to argue that Sand dancer is a racist expression!

  • 6 welshgeordie9 // Mar 19, 2016 at 10:24 PM

If you know everything about football, how much did i pay for my swans home top in 2003.

  • 7 NoahJ // Mar 19, 2016 at 10:27 PM

It’s so ridiculously poised- if we win, we’re a point behind norwich with a game in hand, and them to play next.If we lose, then it’s basically beat norwich in two weeks or be relegated.

Let’s be positive about tomorrow, and reassured that the mackems too will be shaken by norwich winning today. If norwich would have lost, I reckon mackems would have settled for a draw tomorrow, but now I think they’ll feel they have to get a win too.

    Ian Toon is a legend.
    Rugby is shite.

  • 12 stevie101182 // Mar 19, 2016 at 10:43 PM

I definately think crystal palace are now in the relegation fight. I would absolutely love it come the end of the season Newcastle stay up at the expense of Alan pardews crystal palace. Imagine the buzz lol.

  • 13 Mister Tuff // Mar 19, 2016 at 10:43 PM

martoon – at the risk of you continuing your hissy fit -I did explain is was a joke – clearly the centre of my post was about multiple identities -as usual – and not about the murder of the Danish lass.
You are wanting to believe something that is not there nor was intended. No doubt you will not accept my explanation which I make in all honesty.
You can either accept that or not – I do suspect you won’t as it will not suit your agenda.

However it is admirable that you chose to highlight something which concerns you.
oh by the way where were your comments in response to all the abuse, filthy abuse aimed at others, the other racists comments, homophobia, xenophobia (manx spelled it right this time) etc etc.
Lets me guess -you were on holiday, you looked the othe way, you did not see it,you were shopping blah blah blah. Or a bee stung you in the eye blah blah blah.
#Show some uniformity to make your indignation more plausible.

Belfast……. Are you just saying that to be controversial or do you really mean it?

  • 15 Tsunki // Mar 19, 2016 at 10:53 PM

Jeff you are an entrenched mischief maker who posts Web results to give the illusion of insight, other peoples’ anecdotes to give the illusion of inclusion in society, and liberal nitpicking ‘jib’es to give evidence of your horrible personality.

Ymfb – I’d take on board some of your proposed views if:

    1/. Jeff didn’t have previous
    2/. You didn’t have previous

Perhaps you should dismount first before attempting to knock others off their high horses?

  • 16 jimiley // Mar 19, 2016 at 10:54 PM

Losing the derby would not be the end of the world. We have lost six in a row. We must get behind the team for every game until it is mathematically certain that we are going down. Even then we must rally the team in preparation for a promotion bid next season.

  • 17 Tsunki // Mar 19, 2016 at 10:57 PM

Ian Toon is a leg end

  • 18 Belfast // Mar 19, 2016 at 11:02 PM

Yes Ian Toon is a legend and how did Rob Vollans sneak past security?

That’s what happens when Skunki is manning the fire exits.

  • 19 Tsunki // Mar 19, 2016 at 11:03 PM

Betty he’s just saying it, again, to be noticed. You can ignore him. He’s Rugbyist.

  • 20 Tsunki // Mar 19, 2016 at 11:05 PM

Whoa whoa Belfast I was straight onto him check out post 15 I’m on it.

  • 21 Belfast // Mar 19, 2016 at 11:07 PM

And yes Rugby is shite hate it.

  • 22 bettyswallocks // Mar 19, 2016 at 11:08 PM

Tsunki……… I wasn’t going to say anything but there are people who hold rugby dear to their hearts and will more than likely be offended by that comment.
Still it’s nowt to do with me like . I’m staying out of it .

  • 23 Belfast // Mar 19, 2016 at 11:09 PM

Going with a 0-0 draw tomorrow. I’m not really looking forward to it to be honest, get beat and we’re doomed imo.

Good evening lads. Nerves are creeping in big time!

Can’t believe Norwich won away – does that mean a much higher points tally is required to ensure safety this season?

Seems like only Villa are banker down.

  • 39 Jib // Mar 19, 2016 at 11:42 PM

Why are you addressing remarks to a person who as far as I can tell hasn’t posted for years ?
It’s very eerie and spooky a bit like Mr Tuffs posts are we dealing with a Jekyll and Hyde scenario here ?

  • 40 welshgeordie9 // Mar 19, 2016 at 11:49 PM

Well I’m off to bed, big day tomorrow, can’t wait for the match to start, hope everyone will be smiling after the whistle, goodnight all.

  • 41 Jib // Mar 19, 2016 at 11:56 PM

After careful perusal of the table I think a combination of the difficulty of their fixture list , and their players thinking of the FA cup semifinal against Watford, Pardew’s got a hell of a job to get any points.
By April 30th when Crystal Palace play at SJP they are going to be in relegation trouble.

  • 42 Lindisfarne // Mar 20, 2016 at 12:10 AM

    BBC Football Gossip reports:
“”Carlisle goalkeeper Mark Gillespie had a busy afternoon. While he was playing in a 1-1 draw with Wycombe Wanderers, his sister was giving birth to their son.””
    Que the banjo music.

  • 43 Blackley and Brownlie // Mar 20, 2016 at 12:16 AM

I heard one of our first teamers was in the Diamond recently. Pointing the finger at the French contingent being the problem.

  • 44 Magpie Season // Mar 20, 2016 at 12:16 AM

After the derby I still thought we had a game in hand over Sunderland. How could that be they will have played 30 after the derby tomorrow also? Who is theirs against? Either way, it means a draw is unacceptable as survival is out of our hands.

  • 45 daffy // Mar 20, 2016 at 12:45 AM

44- we have Everton at home last week of the season before the final Sunday

  • 47 daffy // Mar 20, 2016 at 1:01 AM

Oh dear Munster – the pressure has got to you lot – you know we are masters of the great escape ?

  • 48 lesh // Mar 20, 2016 at 1:30 AM

If anybody deserves the boot it’s Charnley and Carr! One’s inept and the other out of control.

  • 49 Munster Mag // Mar 20, 2016 at 1:38 AM

Daffy have you ever seen a mackem in milan? Nope, me neither.

  • 50 stuart no9 // Mar 20, 2016 at 1:42 AM

cum on lads , youve got us relagated before rafa takes his first steps onto the turf , whats up with ya?/ There are 9 games left , weve got a game in hand of norwich , we have some winnable games coming up , weve got the mackems this afternoon ( not real , not barca , the mackems ) cant believe people dropping theie bottle with 9 games left and rafas first home . Its just a good job he cant here some of you lot – he’d f@@k now

Lucky enough to be in Newcastle with my clan from Ireland. Twelfth man. Time for deliberation is over. Man up or stfu. #survival

  • 56 Termijn // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:56 AM

Norwich winning is annoying but really doesnt change much. They have a much tougher fixture list and we have two games in hand on them anyway. We’ll still need a good 4 wins and 2 draws to ensure safety regardless of whether Norwich won last night. Ill bank on both us and the mackems to catch them by seasons end and wouldnt be surprised if we caught palace as well the way their forms been.

  • 57 Termijn // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:59 AM

I’ll go a 3-1 win to get the optimism started.
I reckon Rafa may play this team
    Janmaat Lascelles (Mbemba/Taylor) Colback
    Townsend Wijnaldum Shelvey Sissoko
    Perez Doumbia

Doumbia to open the scoring with his first goal for us 😀

  • 58 jimmysmith // Mar 20, 2016 at 3:17 AM

The Norwich result at Brom is to be expected at times between one side fighting tooth and nail and another with little to play for. Sunderland and Newcastle are likely to enjoy similar results, and we have the better players and manager, so at the end of the day we still remain best placed, but of course our next two fixtures are critical.

We have a fine squad on paper, but in reality we lack quality and experience at the back and up top. You can’t blame McClaren for that, nor Pardew, but you can point a finger at Carr, Charnley and the owner. I think we’ll sort it out in the off season, but wouldn’t it be ironic, and therefore likely, considering how ironic life often seems to be, that we will go down, just as we were set to perform to our potential, and if we do, then without doubt or remorse and resolutely, it’s Ashley Out for me.

  • 59 chicousa // Mar 20, 2016 at 4:41 AM

Wow…..never been so keyed up before a match before! Must win game if there ever was one. I hope Rafa has got the lads ready to go: the extra practices, the missed days off, I hope all pays off. Attack Toon, attack, attack!!! NUFC 3, Unwashed 1. HWTFL!

  • 60 Dingo†® // Mar 20, 2016 at 4:49 AM

its gonna be a cagey game at best 1-0 toon for me…. late on.

  • 61 chicousa // Mar 20, 2016 at 5:01 AM

Got the strong feeling Mitro is going to have a massive game….a brace is what I’m thinkin. The lad is due and I think he will deliver!!!

  • 62 stuart no9 // Mar 20, 2016 at 5:09 AM

As i said earlier lads , get your heads sorted .
Last season – the very last game of the season we HAD to beat West Ham to stay up – we did that . This season we have 9 GAMES to stay up with a top class manager not a f@@king idiot like carver ,so, IF CARVER CAN KEEP US UP , IM BLOODY SURE RAFA THE GAFFA CAN, WE WONT GO DOWN LADS .

  • 63 firebug666 // Mar 20, 2016 at 6:21 AM

Mitrovic is not a concern for me today, his goals will start to come eventually, but today I hope to see his hold up play bring in the likes of Wijnaldum and Shelvey who are also capable of netting for us.

We also have Townsend back who already has a goal this season, and hopefully Perez will come on in the second half to to twist and turn their tired defence.

We have plenty of goals in this team, so if Benitez gets this right we will win today for sure.

  • 64 The overrated Frenchman // Mar 20, 2016 at 6:38 AM

If it’s a dud performance today then I think it’s all over red rover. Not so much the points, but more about what sort of ticker this lot actually has. If ever a team needed to make a statement of intent, put it all on the line, show the right stuff, it’s here and now.

  • 65 firebug666 // Mar 20, 2016 at 6:38 AM

It’s not just lock your daughters up time and Scumberland drift into Toon, better lock your wives up too Defoe is with them!

  • 66 JAMSHA // Mar 20, 2016 at 6:51 AM
