every single thing revolves around that norwich game A win and we’ll go level on points with a similar GD making the swansea villa and palace wins will be able to make up for a norwich victory against palace and scums.

If we lose then normwich will go 6 points ahead with better GD leaving us desperate for palace and sums to beat norwich or ourselves to strike lucky in the difficult games as well as get victory against swansea, palace and villa.

Your reliance on stats to form your opinion when football is far from an incontrovertible science is almost Pardew-esque in it’s blindness. Form your own opinion with your eyes. Stats rarely tell the truth, particularly in football with such vague terms as ‘successful dribbles’. I gave an example of this earlier in the season to show that Obertan is at least our second best winger, if not the best, if you used his stats and made the appearances equal, changing the ratios of goals/assists appropriately.

If you’re arguing Sissoko was better than Townsend, you’ll find few that watched or attended who’ll agree, no matter how many stats you put in front of them. Sissoko wastes every good opportunity of his own or others making recently. His legs and brain ust don’t compute at the crucial moments.

Funnily enough, Sissoko looked better at LB using his body well to get between ball and man. Not a solution though.

I think the blog poll says it loud and clear. Townsend was easily our biggest threat. Awareness of space and where the danger areas are to put the ball at the right time and where his teammates are. He’s decisive and does stuff with conviction which makes a change from the constant hesitation in our attacks.

Great moment when the entire toon staff were trying to hold Mitro back from running back onto the pitch! For one awful moment I was cringeing thinking he was gonna stick one on Rafa or the doc! 🙂

I think we will play better away to Norwich as nerves with there today for all to see. The players looked like they were under pressure not to lose to Sunderland. It was a millstone around their feet.

I voted for Lascelles as my MOTM. He was very commanding especially in the air.

I didn’t think much of Colback. The occasion seemed too much for him. Gini was in and out of the match. He can be quite anonymous at times. Townsend looked dangerous. Perez tried hard. De Jong looks like he should start against Norwich. He links up well with all the other players. Mitrovic was himself and at last got into the box where he should spend more time.

Overall we didn’t deserve to win. A draw is a fair result but is no good to either team.

We just lack quality in front of goal, we all to often get into the oppositions box and far too many opportunities are missed.
Unfortunately it will take us doon.

We need Collocini, De Jong, and Cisse in. Also perhaps Tiote, for either Shelvey or Wijnaldum, though that’s a big call, but some more experience and quality is required. I understand the first casualty of the Tyne Wear Derby is the football, but neither side looked at all EPL quality, and that has me quite worried now.

Lascelles is decent in a fifty fifty, on the deck and in the air, but that’s where the comparison with a genuine EPL CB ends. He doesn’t maintain shape, loses his man at critical moments, and can’t play the ball out from the back. I know he’s still learning the ropes, but he really shouldn’t be in there, and it’s a problem for us if he stays in.

IMO Benitez needs to rethink his preferred formation for one that will be more practical in the current situation. 4231 is all right for a confident attacking side which is the opposite of NUFC, although the side have been playing a lot better since the change in Manager. With 8 games to go and no confidence, I think we need to concentrate on being solid rather than continue risking possession with players that have little imagination or ability to carve out clear goal scoring opportunities.

    Started with this…

    ———————-Elliot
    -Janmaat – Mbemba – Lascelles – Colback
    Townsend – Shelvey – Wijnaldum – Sissoko
    ———–Mitrovic——–Perez

    And ended the game with..

    ——————–Elliot
    Anita – Mbemba – Lascelles – Sissoko
    ———–Shelvey – Wijnaldum
    —————–De Jong
    ——–Cisse – Mitrovic – Perez

Can’t say Rafa didn’t go for it!!

Lascelles is only 22. If we happen to stay up and he has one more full season under Benitez than I think he grow into a top player.

Mbemba is only 21yrs old too.

And with Colback suspended for the next 2 games I think we may see SDJ.

And I think Sissoko worked well as a fullback. He is good at charging down the wing and putting balls in, but isn’t so good at finishing. That’s basically a textbook fullback right there.

Well we avoided complete disaster but it wasn’t good enough was it? We didn’t start playing until the second half. Very disappointing. It all comes down to the Norwich game. If we lose that it becomes very nearly impossible with our team as it stands. Doumbia must be a complete write off. Why bring him in? I suspect he’s carried an injury all along.

you say that but based on our overall season newcastle might be ale to make up for a swansea defeat with victory against city, spurs or liverpool all teams who’ve seen ourselves give a good performance.

First and foremost we must get that victory away to norwich otherwise we could be seen 9 points behind before that game begins.

Until Ashley and friends are gone this will be the way of things. Limping from one disaster to another. Sad to say and I’ll remain hopeful that we stay up but really with Ashley in charge it’s going to be nasty every season.

I would argue Benitez started with this…

    ———————-Elliot
    -Janmaat – Mbemba – Lascelles – Colback
    ———-Wijnaldum——Shelve
    —Townsend——Perez——Sissoko
    ——————–Mitrovic——–

    And ended the game with..

    ——————–Elliot
    Anita —-– Mbemba – Lascelles – Sissoko
    Wijnaldum–De Jong–Shelvey –– Perez
    ———–——–Cisse – Mitrovic

I’d say Rafa was desperate, lacks the instinct or personal to play a forward that will run in behind and midfielders that can not play a through ball.

I thought Elliot, Mbemba and Townsend were our best players today toon kk mate. Sissoko promises a lot but delivers very little. Wijnaldum seems to disappear for long stretches. Colback played right into the mackem’s hands with the fouls. A very difficult ask of Benitez considering the players he has to choose from.

Still think Sissoko is best as a box-to-box CM. His burst of speed and power are much more devastating to a teams defensive shape when going straight through the middle of them and that creates space for all those around him, means the onus would be less on him to provide that final pass/shot also as he gives it wide or to the AM.

Mitro I’m just disappointed there isn’t more to his game. Seems he can attack the ball with his head well enough, although not a against big, tough CBs so needs to learn to peel off to fullbacks more like for the goal. Tries hard enough, especially at home when he doesn’t have his episodic sulks.

Gini and Townsend swapping wings throughout a match, Sissoko and Shelvey in CM and SDJ behind Mitrovic.

If no LB recovered in time for Norwich, then it’ll have to be Anita.

Hail Wor Ashley – You seem to be forgetting my original point, which was to put Wijnaldum on the right flank – which worked and created a goal.

I can see the majority opinion believes Townsend had a better game than Sissoko. I didn’t state that Townsend had a bad game, but that in my opinion Sissoko was more likely to make something happen, so I would have opted to keep Sissoko on and take Townsend off.

It is merely an opinion. Your opinion is different, I don’t claim that you are clueless because your opinion differs from mine. Is this starting to make sense yet?

I will be honest, I believe that I am correct, but I can see the logic in the alternative opinion – I certainly would not be calling people “clueless” or say they are the type of fans that “do my nut in” because they wanted Sissoko taken off instead of Townsend.

You can split hairs over it all you want, but Wijnaldum moving to the right flank, which I suggested, created the equaliser.

For somebody that thinks it’s all opinions you seem to be heavily invested in needing to be seen to be right in the eyes of others, trying to use empiricism in football to back you up and mute others. Well the fans don’t seem to agree with your objective stats by and large. Fairly sure you said NUFC-83 had no point at one stage, now “it’s all opinions”. Right.
