My initial report seems to have disappeared or been destroyed – that must be omen we will win this game.

Here it is again.

=====

Rafa Benitez had just named his team for his home debut as the Newcastle manager against Sunderland in the local derby this afternoon and Andros Townsend, Chancel Mbemba and Jamaal Lascelles all start in what is a 4-4-2 formation.

Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez will be the two strikers up front.

Teams:

Newcastle (4-4-2): Rob Elliot; Daryl Janmaat, Chancel Mbemba, Jamaal Lascelles, Jack Colback; Moussa Sissoko, Jonjo Shelvey (c), Georginio Wijnaldum, Andros Townsend; Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Steven Taylor, Vurnon Anita, Henri Saivet, Siem de Jong, Emmanuel Riviere, Papiss Cisse

Sunderland (4-1-4-1): Vito Mannone; DeAndre Yedlin, Younes Kaboul (c), Lamine Kone, Patrick van Aanholt; Jan Kirchhoff; Fabio Borini, Yann M’Vila, Jack Rodwell, Wahbi Khazri; Jermain Defoe
Substitutes: Jordan Pickford, Billy Jones, John O’Shea, Lee Cattermole, Ola Toivonen, Jeremain Lens, Dame N’Doye

Referee: Martin Atkinson (Yorkshire)

It’s great to see Chancel Mbemba back in the side and he should make a big difference at the back.

Papiss Cisse is also back from injury and on the bench along with Manu Riviere – so Rafa is looking for goals this afternoon.

With Steven Taylor on the bench it looks like Jamaal was preferred to Taylor in central defense and Vernon Anita is dropped and it could be that Gini Wijnaldum moves into central midfield with Jonjo Shelvey, who captains the side.

This looks a very strong side, with Jack Colback, who is on 9 yellow cards, continuing at left back.

This is what Rafa has said about the game this afternoon.

“We know how big the derby is for the city and for the fans,” “It’s massive for both teams and we have to make sure we enjoy it but also give everything to win.”

“The main thing for me is the players on the pitch and the fans in the stands, because that is what makes the difference.”

“The fans are crucial for us.  At this stage we know the fans will be disappointed if someone makes a mistake but it is important that we stick together and every fan gets behind the players on the pitch.”

“They will be pushing for us to make a good start to the game and they will be important in determining how we approach the game.”

“At the same time, we need to stay strong in defense and show a bit more going forward. This game is about the players and the fans – if we have everything going well we can score goals and win this match.”

Three fans in four think we can win this very crucial game this afternoon.

WTF was that between Mbemba and Shelvey, faffing for 30 seconds and led to Elliot having to just clear his lines.

Take Colback off, he’s an idiot. Anita has played LB, get him on.

  • 20 ilovetoon8788 // Mar 20, 2016 at 1:47 PM

Colback is having a stinker. And we look so nervous and poor. Sunderland look like they might just take all 3 points again.

We’re getting outplayed. LB area is shambolic. No positional sense, no communication, no composure.

  • 27 manxpie // Mar 20, 2016 at 1:49 PM

borini is a little pussy like!

  • 28 toonbrother // Mar 20, 2016 at 1:50 PM

SHelvey is not a natural DM
He and Gini are struggling to get a hold in midfield

  • 29 Hail Wor Ashley // Mar 20, 2016 at 1:50 PM

    Townsend and Sissoko looking sprightly

As usual for Mitrovic – must do better – not involved currently.

  • 30 matias // Mar 20, 2016 at 1:50 PM

Here`s the predicted card for Colback. Positive is we`ll get tp be without him. Just has to stay on field today.

  • 31 Nufc-83 // Mar 20, 2016 at 1:50 PM

Glad coldback is suspended he did it against Leicester constant free kicks that’s how we went a goal down. Same again today he is the new Williamson and Simpson bang average championship player

  • 32 Hail Wor Ashley // Mar 20, 2016 at 1:51 PM

Our defence are bricking it. Mbemba’s distribution has been woeful.

such an exaggerated reaction by kasri

  • 56 Obertans_on_roids // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:03 PM

We have to be winning more loose ball in midfield, Gini not working hard enough.

  • 57 keeleytoon // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:04 PM

please take sissoko off at half time, worst player by a mile already today

  • 64 Hail Wor Ashley // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:06 PM

Midfield nowhere when Borini took that.

Mbemba decided he’s not good enough to take it off him fairly.

  • 65 ilovetoon8788 // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:07 PM

Overall Sunderland has been better. Kirchhoff is absolutely their rock in midfield. We are lucky if we go in HT at nil nil.

  • 66 toonbrother // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:07 PM

    sunderland signed wisely in january
    kirchoff is an absolute beast
contrast that with pointless signings like doumbia and saivet

  • 67 manxpie // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:08 PM

janmaat must have about 2 brain cells fair enough if they’re are baring down on goal but in that position absolutley stupid!!

  • 68 Hail Wor Ashley // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:08 PM

    Mitrovic easily bullied again.

Need something in behind. Cisse on or Perez allowed to play further forward.

  • 71 ilovetoon8788 // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:10 PM

Sunderland January signings will keep them up.
How many of our 80m signings are actually playing?

  • 72 c-dog // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:10 PM

Such a lack of intelligent forward thinking players in our side.

  • 73 toonbrother // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:10 PM

omg mbemba pass the flipping ball you moron

  • 74 Hail Wor Ashley // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:10 PM

Gini can’t take the pace of this game in that position. Looked good against Leicester as the game wore on and slowed, not hacking it today.

    Mbemba having an almost mare.

  • 75 AncientC // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:11 PM

Wijnaldum has been great on the ball, but looks very static. Not chasing to help attacks, or chasing back to defend.

  • 76 ilovetoon8788 // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:11 PM

Saivet can’t start.doumbia might as well go back to Russia. Dreadful signings. Sunderland January signings have been outstanding for them this game.

  • 77 toon kk // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:11 PM

We’re skating on thin ice here, they’re definitely the better side. We’ll probably be down to 10 men before the games over.

Colback is shite, like when in CM, once he’s got a booking he becomes a chocolate fireguard.

    FFS!

We’re so shite. No way out of this mess. Could appoint SAF and it wouldn’t help with this rotten bunch.

  • 91 Hail Wor Ashley // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:16 PM

Aimless crosses our only means of ‘attack’.

Mitro off – invisible for the most part and when involved easily bullied off it.

    Anita on for Colback too.

80 million worth of dirt signed this season. Not one match winner in our side.

  • 103 AncientC // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:18 PM

Sunderland are there for the taking, they are playing a high back line. If Sissoko could use his brain, or Townsend stop faffing around, they should be ripe to leak a few goals.

1 shot on target and 1 goal. Absolutely typical.

  • 105 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:18 PM

so far am having a very close up look at the game.

Every team we play against are calm on the ball. Moves are carefully planned and there is a calculated pace to an attack.

We have a collection of sub parr non PL standard players. Have a good look at them. Perez to weak on the ball, teams have sussed him out bit of pressure he caves. 0:1 its over, now the mental state will collapse.

We where relegated at Stoke, all the teams around us are playing with confidence. Rafa has not time to do a thing here. He will not stay at NUFC.

Years of degradation have taken its toll on the club. Poor players money spent in the wrong direction.

Have a good one lads I cannot watch this anymore.

  • 106 true toon // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:18 PM

  • 109 Blofal // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:19 PM

Perez is doing nothing. He is supposed to be dropping into the hole and linking up Mitro with the midfield but instead is losing all of his 1v1s.

Swap Perez for De Jong ASAP.

  • 110 optimistic prime // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:19 PM

  • 111 danuneek // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:19 PM

  • 112 Hail Wor Ashley // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:19 PM

Think Rafa put too much emphasis on composure and cool heads. They’ve won all the 50/50s and been quickest to loose balls – it’s been the case in all the derbies recently.

Colback the only one not to get the memo and he’s too far the other end of the spectrum, too keyed up and not playing smart from the off.

Just a crap bunch of players. Like when we went down before, severely overrated by everybody, including themselves.

  • 113 Oleg G // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:20 PM

This was the same type of goal as last week basically.
from withing close to goal, a ball that was from the air, and we let the attack get to the ball first.

  • 114 colwell // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:20 PM

Janmaat has to be one of the worst RB’s in the prem his defending is shocking and when he crosses goes onto his weak left foot and curls it to the gk w@nker.

Perez shite again wants half hour on the ball tackled everytime, get him off he’s been shite for months.

    Colback = CNUT

Overall we are fcuking useless and are definitely going down.

  • 115 cyprus // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:20 PM

We are crap. Mbemba head it out man. Rafa you ain’t God yet. Your team is playing terribly. Worse than the first round.
    Come on. Play football

  • 116 Thump // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:20 PM

@AncientC: 2 shots on target. The first was the header that Elliot tipped over from Colback’s free kick.

We just need to calm the fsck down.

  • 117 PK-Norway // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:20 PM

We dont have a striker, left back, left wing .. And no all ball from defence goes to shelvey nothing to wijnaldum.. Perez is to weak..

  • 118 benjohnsen // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:20 PM

Even if we turn this game around. I cannot see how this gang of players will ever be able to pull of 4-5 wins. They are rubbish.

  • 119 AncientC // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:21 PM

Wijnaldum needs to be switched position or taken off. I would put Wijnaldum on the right, take Townsend of & bring De Jong on.

  • 120 ilovetoon8788 // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:21 PM

The difference was the January signings. Sunderland has made fantastic signings with immediate impact. Ours are rotting on the bench or hiding in a cave somewhere.

  • 121 ochytoon // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:21 PM

This team has no mental strength, they look scared and clueless. We always look like we’re playing with a man down cos of the lack of movement which imo has been our biggest weakness for the past few seasons.

Need to bring on another centre mid as we’re outnumbered in the centre of the park atm

  • 122 Hail Wor Ashley // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:21 PM

    Cisse for Mitro

    SDJ for Perez

    Anita for Colback.

  • 123 NezzaNUFC // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:21 PM

With McClaren we dominated the Scums away, in the first 10 minutes I just knew Sunderland where going to win this and probably another 3-0 as well.

F@ck supporting this team they have done nowt for us!

  • 124 toonking // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:22 PM

This system is not working for us, at home we should be playing attacking football with a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 system.

We are yet again second best in every department….And we are at home ffs.

  • 128 ilovetoon8788 // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:23 PM

We have far too many players who are actually not good enough for this league yet. Perez, mitrovic, Colback are actually championship standard.

  • 129 NUFCPaul // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:23 PM

Come on lads, I know it’s not looking good for us (in fact, it’s looking pretty awful) but there’s still 45 minutes to go. This is where Rafa shows how good he is, although they say a workman is only as good as his tools, and it looks like he’s dealing with a right bunch of tools at the minute.

  • 130 Nufc-83 // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:23 PM

  • 134 ilovetoon8788 // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:26 PM

Right from the kickoff scums were all over us and look right up for it. We just caved in. We have players who are mentally weak. Perez should never be. Playing this sort of games.

Rafa benitez my arse. Awful team set up and zero effort. Sissoko wiji out of position. V v disappointed with rafa. For the first time in my life i am almost beyond caring. Get pearson in when we go down please and sell three quarters of the team

  • 138 Wayayman // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:27 PM

That Sky Sport interview with Gini that they played right before KO was alarming. He said that the team don’t talk and help each other off the pitch, they’re more interested in doing their own thing.

Our whole season suddenly makes sense.

  • 139 manxpie // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:28 PM

cisse has to come on he is the only player that we know can nick a goal and from anywhere
    so him on for perez

  • 140 shaun83 // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:28 PM

A terrible and needless goal to concede, again! 1 not sure who it was but they should have come across and cleared so colback didn’t have to put it behind, 2 Elliot needs to put that over his bar 3 mbemba needs to head that over the bar, shambles.

Having said that we have been absolutely awful and to be fair it could be worse. Just can’t see where the goals are going to come from. Norwich winning yesterday if we lose this then we may have already drunk in last chance saloon.

  • 141 Average_Contents // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:28 PM

    That’s it.

    No coming back now.

We’re down and they’ve sealed our fate.

    Fcuking pathetic.

  • 142 davis_toons // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:29 PM

said again ..striker makes hell lots of different.

Ayoze Perez – Too light weight..chasing lost ball everywhere.

Mitrovic – Young and inexperience no mentorship very new to this league.

Questions: Where will the goals come from?

    Georginio Wijnaldum.

Put his in Ayoze Perez place. bring on Henri Saivet, Siem de Jong or Anita.

    OUT
    Ayoze Perez.

    IN
    Steven Taylor (Collback)
    – Lascelles (LB)

  • 145 firebug666 // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:29 PM

Personally I don’t think our players are bothered, when we go down they at least will stay up by moving to other teams.

Shame on the lot of them! especially as they don’t even look like trying.

  • 146 toonking // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:29 PM

    NUFCpaul

we could have morineo or ferguso. The fact is these players are a bunch of lazy unpassionate players whilst our overall squad is very small.

Managers might be able to control things off the pitch but they can do nothing about the decisions players make on the pitch and with such lack of squad selection players can perform rubbish without the risk of getting dropped.

  • 147 ilovetoon8788 // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:29 PM

Allardyce had better tactics and has his team right up for this game. We will need a performance never seen before this season, to get anything out of this game.

  • 148 Nufc-83 // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:29 PM

Ancient are you watching the game that’s what I’m basing it on. He has created two chances and had a good shot that few feet either way would have gone in. What has any other player on that pitch done more than that for you to take him off ffs. Fans like you do my nut in talking utter garbage no wonder we are a laughing stock.

  • 149 manxpie // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:30 PM

  • 150 Slank // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:30 PM

We have 45 minutes to save the season.

If we draw or lose then it’s curtains.

  • 151 toon kk // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:31 PM

I said before the season kicked off we have a sh.t lazy squad with no goals in it and we’d be relegated, I was slated for saying that. But unfortunately I am being proven right.

  • 152 Wayayman // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:31 PM

NUFC 83, Townsend looks decent with the ball at his feet. When he has to put a defender under pressure, even one whose only 6 feet away, he can’t be bothered. That’s putting us under pressure on that side of the pitch.

  • 153 AncientC // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:31 PM

Sissoko’s final ball is letting him down, but he is getting space to run into – the potential is there for something to happen.

Townsend is getting closed down and it becomes congested around him, whereas Sissoko is opening the game up.

Nufc-83, you will notice I was able to make my point without calling you a “clown” too. That is how adults communicate, when you learn how to communicate, you can get back to me.

  • 158 Hail Wor Ashley // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:32 PM

    Wayayman

Aye. Compare that to when we had Barton, Nolan, Carroll, Raylor, Jonas etc, and they were always talking, smiling, having banter on the pitch, giving earfuls if need be. Our team was visibly a team and friends off the pitch. Now it’s just a collection of misfits and mercenaries, like when we went down before.

  • 159 davis_toons // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:32 PM

Don’t give Ancient the time of day. He’s dogmatic in his views and doesn’t base it on reality. He thinks Mitrovic is the business still because he probably had high hopes like all of us when he signed, says it all. Most now see he’s another dud.

  • 164 ilovetoon8788 // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:35 PM

  • 167 Hail Wor Ashley // Mar 20, 2016 at 2:38 PM

Townsend was the sole attacking threat. If you can’t see that give up on footy. Only one to create a chance, only one to have a good effort at goal, and passed into Perez feet on the edge of the box for that free-kick.

The rest had no clue or method. Sissoko flatters to deceive constantly. Needs a final ball/shot to materialise, fast.

    Shelvey lucky there.

Leicester city are heading for a title with ranieri as manager

Chelsea somehow start looking as though they fighting relegation with the same manager who’s been called the chosen one by most chelsea fans

Newcastle get into 5th place with pardew

Newcastle now perform great one week then terrible for a selection of weeks and don’t look any better even with rafa

England still fail to make any progress in a world or european cup even when a top class manager is appointed

Wales have an every day average manager and get into the european championship

Later in the game. Townsend comes off, Wijnaldum gets down the right and sets up a goal for Mitro to take.

In all fairness that is 2 points dropped by the makems in the context of that game. We struggled to make an impact, they looked more dangerous and I didn’t see a goal coming for us. We were fortunate to get a point there to be honest, and I think we only did because safc took their foot off our neck after the 1st half. We seem to lack bottle and ideas. We have to find both before Norwich.

  • 305 benjohnsen // Mar 20, 2016 at 3:29 PM

I have to say that De Jong is going to be important for Newcastle in the last 8 matches. He brings experience and good to find people with the ball. Cisse is as always hungry for goal and he gets in the right positions. Mbemba is crucial as well with his speed. Taylor today and we would have lost 3-0.

Give Colback a break until the summer as well. Too hotheaded. Anita is better than Janmaat at right back. Says it all what kind of squad we have.

  • 306 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Mar 20, 2016 at 3:30 PM

De Jong has the pass accuracy the rest don’t. Its not brash as Sissoko’s or nervous like Perez and Short like Wijnaldum. I am not understanding how this team had flashes in the few games in the beginning of the season and completely lost its ability to play a few passes…

  • 307 toonking // Mar 20, 2016 at 3:30 PM

we’ll need to win 3-0 if we are to go above norwich next game and even that could still be in the drop with scums playing westbrom and the comes an easy norwich game against palace before the scums themselves go up aghainst the kiwis

  • 308 Nufc-83 // Mar 20, 2016 at 3:30 PM

Ancient the fact you wanted gini moved was obvious and I would have agreed he offered nothing on cm. The problem was you where asking to take Townsend off not sissokho in the end we where forced to as we lost both fb and sissokho more suited than a lightweight Townsend. If he had brought sissokho off and we had Townsend and gini on the wing we may have won you never know. Bottom line is the fact you wanted our most dangerous player off shows you are clueless.

  • 312 shaun83 // Mar 20, 2016 at 3:32 PM

I did have a bit of a head scratch at the subs inititially but actually inspired. De Jong looks like he could make a difference for us in coming games, created so much space and brought Perez into the game who was useless before.

By far the better side that second half, unfortunately the last 10 mins were dis jointed, mainly bad officiating, red gave us nothing all game.

If we can take the last 30mins and play for a full 90 then we are in with a chance.

I am at a loss to see why we are where we are for the most part. We obviously need a Shearer/MacDonald but today’s performance belies where we are. Mitrovic reminds me of Shola in as far as he captures the ball largely with his back to goal and lays it off but his goal today was that bit of killer instinct we need more of. I guess the real problem is a massive lack of confidence which is beginning to creep back. The talent is there, we just need it unleashed more. Maybe we should play Mitrovic and Cisse up front all the game

  • 336 catchy in norway // Mar 20, 2016 at 3:40 PM

If was being honest about this, i would say i was very dissapionted in how they lined up, im not sure where perez fit into that line up,
sissoko should be on the right side, he is much more suited to that side and he has a much better understanding with Jannmat.
Gini is better than perez as the no 10 type player.
and that leaves Andros v Perez for the LW, and the both have +&- to start there.

  • 337 chicousa // Mar 20, 2016 at 3:41 PM

I thought Perez was poor today, took several weak shots when he should have passed. Mitrovic was a warrior! Colback was reckless and brainless. Lascelles played well. Mbemba was good thoughout with the exception of one nearly disastrous moment. Gini and Jonjo both had decent moments. Point earned, but should have won!

  • 344 sing in the corner // Mar 20, 2016 at 3:42 PM

We stopped the 7 in a row, but that is the measliest crumb of comfort. The real worry is that for much of this game we looked shite scared, bereft of ideas…at home against a very average bottom 3 side. Another week of hard graft for Rafa and his staff for the next must win game.

  • 345 Nufc-83 // Mar 20, 2016 at 3:43 PM

Ancient since you like stars find out who created the most dangerous chances for us and how dribbled the most successfully and how had more shots on target. I would bet Townsend ahead of most if not all.

  • 346 Hail Wor Ashley // Mar 20, 2016 at 3:44 PM

Mitro needs to learn from that goal. Unfortunately he doesn’t match up to the physicality of most PL CBs, he even said as much himself earlier in the season in an interview. Gets bullied by most, pull onto the fullbacks that generally tend to be smaller and he’ll get more success like he did for the goal.

Still think it’s just a stay of execution unless big changes are made to our starting line-up and Rafa doesn’t stubbornly stick to his 4-2-3-1 from the off.

  • 347 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Mar 20, 2016 at 3:44 PM

Perez I have noticed been watching him whole game…very weak on ball get pushed off easily. He cannot dribble but he tries anyhow, he should simplify his game drastically. Should pass more.

Mitro playing with his back to goal too much. I think most of us saw Wini should be played wider….De Jong as I mentioned must start to be able to pass the ball.

Just behind him not quite sure Shelvey, with somebody.

His passing was crap, he hasn’t a clue when somebody is running at him so just turns to the side and blocks like a hedgehog curls into a ball on instinct when under threat, he should have headed it out of play for their goal and almost cost us dear at the end.

Good point. Townsend all day for me. Anyone know what the craic was with Doumbia not in the squad??

If we’re not already considering relegation certainties we look certainties without victory at norwich

    Norwich V newcastle
    Palace V Norwich
    Norwich V sunderland

    Norwich V Newcastle
    southampton V newcastle
    Newcastle V swansea

Assuming we go with results as paper would see them a defeat to norwich and we’ll 9 points behind +a poor GD

A win against norwich and we’ll be 3 points behind but will go into the final run with 2 easy 3 pointers whilst norwich have extremely hard final run in.

    sing
that was after a week with rafa with again!! a brand new back four which we havent had a consistent one all season
and it showed in their goal but we certainly looked more organised
CM looks a big problem we need shelvey without the burden of defending so much
i.e we need an in form tiote next to him

The scum were robbed! Thank goodness Mitrovic connected to the ONLY decent cross of the game. We were awful – no decent closing down, poor in the air, lots of loose balls, little positional awareness. However, the draw ‘keeps us alive’.
