Newcastle Suffer Another Injury Blow

8:07 am, Monday, March 21st, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 15 Comments

Newcastle’s Daryl Janmaat had to leave the game after 71 minutes yesterday and in came his Dutch compatriot Vurnon Anita and Vurnon did a decent job of filling in for the Dutch International right back.

And it’s good to hear that Janmaat has pulled out of the Holland squad and will receive treatment for the injury at Benton – and hopefully will be fit for the game at Norwich City on 2nd April.

Daryl has a good record of recovering from injury and the 26 year-old has missed very few games since he joined us from Feyenoord in the summer of 2014.

Daryl Janmaat – injured

Jack Colback managed to pick up his 10th yellow card of the season yesterday and he had to be withdrawn by Benitez before he received another yellow card in the second half and earn himself an additional one game suspension.

He will miss the next two games and Jack had a poor game yesterday and even if he wasn’t suspended he would likely have been replaced at left back for the game at Norwich.

In that first half our left hand side was weak and Sissoko wasn’t helping out Jack enough – and Fabio Borini had a bit of a field day down Sunderland’s right wing yesterday.

Paul Dummett is out until at least mid-April and our other left-back – Sadio Haidara – could be back from injury in the next two weeks – maybe.

We do have some other players coming back from injury – with Papiss Cisse getting some playing time yesterday for the first time in three months –  and we expect Fab Coloccini to be back and maybe even Cheick Tiote for the game at Norwich.

But Kevin Mbabu remains injured – otherwise he could have done a decent job at left back for us and the youngster misses  too many games through injury.

Chancel Mbemba was back yesterday and he made a huge difference at the back for us.

Comments welcome.

Way too many injuries to stay in this league. We’ve been lucky in the past but fate has finally caught up with us it seems.

If we go after good players on the cheap and no one comes in for them it is probably either due to the players poor attitude or because of the players poor injury record.

It is the same with any line of work would you employ someone that is constantly in sick leave?

We keep signing these types of players and it is our own fault we’re in this mess.

I really hope we can stave off relegation for another season and move up the table under Benitez who I have a lot of time for.

But sadly it seems too little too late.

    Morning Guys

Have to agree, I think a draw was a fair result. I am just happy that we showed some fight and got that goal we deserved.

Very happy RB decided to come. Its going to be hard fight till the end but with him here I believe we at least have a chance of escaping. His sub are accurate and he at least gives it a go.

Don’t know why people were slacking him off for putting Sissoko at lb and getting another attacker on the field and preventing Colback from being send off. Sissoko did what was required at lb. Firstly Borini had Colback in his pocket the hole afternoon. Colback did not have the pace to deal with him and secondly at the time we were dominating possession and it was more of him Play LM that LB. He tracked back and did his defensive duties better than Colback in handling Borini.

I think Sissoko needs to swap positions with Gini. He looks far better in defending when forced to than attack and he can use his pace to push through the middle as a box to box midfielder but he is more than capable in defending. this is were he played when we bought him in anycase.

As for Mitro. He might lack some thinks but he has the fight and if he gets some decent chances he will score goals for us. RB is right. The service in the box to him this season is one of our biggest problem in attack.

Strikers need 3 or 4 chances a game on average. Most games he has been given 1 chance and if he does not covert he gets slacked off. How many does Suarez get a game at Barca for that matter? Between 7 and 10 probably on average and he aint scoring 7 a game. It is what it is. We need to create more. our conversion rate of chances are actually decent if you look at the stats. The amount we create is the bigger problem

We are big favourites to go down with the scum. Both north east clubs relegated at the same time. The area is truly the Siberia of footy. The club is cursed and even Rafa will not lift the spell. Sad days. Sad years are coming.

  • 4 sing in the corner // Mar 21, 2016 at 8:22 AM

Left back position remains a huge hole for us, as it has been all season. I actually feel sorry in advance for Sissoko, if he becomes the next receiver of the blog’s poisoned chalice.
If he puts a foot wrong in the next game he will get slaughtered on here, (I don’t know about anywhere else) as the filling-in Colback has, and as Dummett has before him. I recall a game earlier in the season where Aaron’s filled in there for part of a game, didn’t cause any disasters, then started there the next. He struggled and got dogs abuse. We haven’t got a fit left back people. Like it or not it’s square pegs until the club decides it would be a good idea to sign a left back. And opposition know it, will continue to bombard that area and target whoever is pushed in there.

So it’s probably going to be Anita at left back for Norwich. Our fifth choice for that position by my reckoning. And maybe Taylor at right back if Janmaat isn’t fit. Well, that all sounds pretty good to me. I think we’ll be out of our misery soon enough.

  • 6 Lilongwe Geordie // Mar 21, 2016 at 8:31 AM

If Janmaat misses the next game, then Mbemba should be used at right back. Not ideal, but Colo will hopefully be fit and he can play alongside Lascelles. Little option but to play Anita at left back.

Just been looking at a Chronicle article, how miserable does Sissoko look whilst Mitro is celebrating!

  • 7 magscar // Mar 21, 2016 at 8:34 AM

Disappointed and relieved at the same time. Looking back to October game Mackems made 8 starting changes to our 3 ( probably less if Dummett had been fit). They featured 3 of their Jan signings ( Kone, Kirtchoff and Khazri) to our 2 ( Shelvey and Townsend) and arguably theirs figured better. Certainly those 3 players have made a difference to their form since January whereas we have Doumbia and Saivet anonymous but in positions we are desperate for changes.

Overall Kone Kirtchoff and Defoe highlighted our failings in transfers and our continuing need for a defensive midfielder, dominant centre half and a goal scorer( and not forgetting a LB). They are not all long term fixes but have been making a crucial difference to the Mackems recent performances and results. May not be enough hopefully!

Benitez must be hoping he can get a fit De Jong and Cisse (and Dummett or Mbabu) available to him for the remaining fixtures as we need goals. We know Perez Sissoko Gini and Townsend can all score but have all looked ineffective in supporting Mitro as our lone striker. He needs better and quicker support with better passing in final third. Too often we squandered possession in and around their box.

Quite surprising what changes he made yesterday ( McClaren would have been ridiculed) but highlights the difficulty any manager faces with our imbalanced squad.

Still hopeful of a great escape but a defeat at Norwich is unthinkable. Best hope is for Palace to be also dragged into it ( Swansea have probably now done enough) but we have to start picking up 3 points no matter how scrappy. There are signs of effective changes to our play but we still looked incapable of effective passing and movement in first half . Getting players to change in the crisis we are in and with games running out is an increasingly tall order. Under McClaren I don’t doubt we would have lost yesterday.

  • 8 The overrated Frenchman // Mar 21, 2016 at 8:37 AM

We needed a left back in January. Sure, we went through the motions of “attempting” to sign a couple, but how serious were we really? If Carr could have pocketed the loot on a left back he obviously pocketed on the ridiculous Saivet transfer, it would have happened, you can bank on that.

  • 9 jimiley // Mar 21, 2016 at 8:38 AM

The scum game was a must win.. Lets grasp another straw and say the Norwich game is a must win. Lose that one and we can talk about who are new manager will be next season and who we will offload. Hopefully most of the wasters in the team. And Penfold and Carr.

  • 10 jimiley // Mar 21, 2016 at 8:40 AM

Whats happened to Saivet by the way? Another essential Carr midfielder. Joke.

  • 11 Blackley and Brownlie // Mar 21, 2016 at 8:44 AM

We were so slow that we looked like a bunch of over 40s playing the young uns. It was the same against Bournemouth. And god help us if SDJ is the answer, as many of you seem to think. He must be the slowest on the books.

Ah but Blackas, what you miss is he’s quick in his head; he’s such an intelligent player. Where has this myth come from? Because he’s got a big forehead? And because some commentator once said it, some pundit repeated it, someone said it on the blog and someone else agreed? Usually the way these things gain traction.

Ed, i bet to differ your last sentence. My observation, Chancel was very poor all around display. I reckon in this match, Jamaal better than him, a lot.

  • 13 pgakev // Mar 21, 2016 at 9:12 AM

Janmaat was shaat!! AGAIN. Anita looks a far better fullback than him. Overall, we were pants, lucky to get a point. Colback should be taken out and shot, them Janmaat. I will be amazed if we don`t go down. CRAP.!!

    @madserb post 2

i agree with you totally well said!
mitro is a striker that will only score goals if you play attacking football and get some service into the box. he’s useless in a counter-attacking or defending team.

and people janmaat was definitely worse than mbemba yesterday!
he lost possession so many times and was always fouling his opponent. for such a young partnership at CB, we must give mbemba and lascelles some credit! they did more than ok under these heavy pressure circumstances…

colo is also better in a defending team than one that presses, cause he’s too slow to chase attackers from the midway line.
i think lascelles and mbemba is a very good pairing for the future!
both are strong, fast and don’t make that much crucial mistakes.

norwich is our last straw i think, we need a miracle win somehow or our days are numbered..

think relegation or not will be a crucial point in the history of this fkn great club. and only time will tell!

and one more think to all the mitrovic doubters:
you gotta start loving this lad! if everybody would have the same desire as him (hint at the sissoko’s) we would have never been in this mess!
he’s one of the few in our squad that actually looks like he wants to play for NEWCASTLE!! he chose us over some better teams, so give him some respect. only 21 also and he can handle the pressure!
important goals such as spurs, man u, west brom and mackems…

so i don’t know how you can doubt him! he’s our best striker by a mile.. even shearer had his flaws…

You can not polish a turd, we were terrible yesterday and shooting on goal was mainly back passes to their keeper.
I feel sorry for Rafa as he is trying to put a positive spin on everything but we are going down. We need at least 15 points and we will not get them from the last 8 games. A clear out of at least 12 players is needed along with Carr, did you see Ben Arfa`s wonder goal? wish we still had him instead of Sissoko!!!!!!!!
