The club have issued another statement on Rob Elliot saying Rob has an ACL injury and that he will be out for some months.
Rob has taken to Twitter to thank everybody for their good wishes since he sustained his season-ending knee injury – it’s a serious one at that and an ACL injury is one of the most difficult injuries to recover from in football – but Rob will be back – maybe in the October time-frame.
Rob Elliot – Newcastle United goalkeeper
Here’s some of Rob’s tweets he has sent out this afternoon.
He’s such a great lad.
Massive thank you’s to everyone at @FAIreland and @NUFC for looking after me so brilliantly last 24 hours.

Comment #2darlow has only played one game for us so far, so it’s alot of pressure for him, definitely not what we needed but it doesn’t change the fact we’re struggling to even score goals let alone keep them out

Comment #3Just when things were starting to come together, I feel so sorry for Rob as Krul will be back in next season, unless he leaves in the summer.

Comment #11Shame about Elliott, hope he’s well soon.
He’s been our only consistent player.
We definitely will be relegated now, can’t score, can’t defend, struggle to keep the ball now lost our Man that so often kept us in games.
We’ve gone from the second worst team in the premier league to probably the worst.

Comment #13We needed Rob Elliott’s injury like a hole in the head but get well soon Rob. Now we need a good loanee GK now – there must be someone decent available and would expect Rafa to get one in ASAP!

I don’t think anyone expects us to be the next Real Madrid mate, but I am a little more optimistic about our survival under Rafa as he will organise the team better, and if he can get the defence to work as a unit, and limit the oppositions chances Darlow will have some protection.
It’s not all doom and gloom yet mate, keep your chin up as we may get out of this yet.

Let’s hope for a miracle, and Rafa can motivate our players, I just think he can give them quality they clearly don’t possess.
But fingers crossed.
Real shame about Elliott though.

Oh I think we will beat Norwich, but we will face stiffer competition than them, so I am hoping for a confidence boosting win away from home.

Comment #21A lot of people had Elliott as third choice at the start of the season and now Darlows not good enough? based on a shaky spell against W Brom. Well under Wally a majority of ayers had spent a majority of their playing time having shaky spells. The young lad may well be brimming with confidence with a new coaching set up. A young Frazer Forster had a shaky spell against Leeds one game and the rest they say is history……

If the defence do their job, then Darlow’s Confidence should grow, let’s hope we score first and last.

Comment #23I bet Karl Darlow thinks ‘what the hell’….he’s a very well paid professional footballer that has been waiting for a chance to prove he’s good enough. How Many of you remember an 18 year Tim Krul making his debut in a European game and getting man of the match? ‘cometh the hour, cometh the man’ !!!!! I bet both Darlow and Woodman hope they get Rob Elliot’s shirt….believe in Rafa…..l do…?

Comment #33I don’t think you can blame the club for the goal keeping crisis. Starting the season with Krul, Elliot, Darlow and Woodman gives you depth, quality, youth and experience, but you certainly can blame them for the high pressure circumstance Darlow will come into.
In this situation the keeper is a most critical player. We are in serious trouble, with one foot firmly in the Championship. In Rafa we trust, nonsense. He’s a good manager, not a magician. It’ll take a number of planets to line up to get out of this, and after the last few years, it’s hard to argue we deserve to, anymore than Villa, that’s how poorly the club has been run.
We’ve carried far too many injury prone and inadequate footballers in the 8 years under Ashley, and this period of transition toward a better group of core players has been undone by it.

Comment #34I would be curious to know how much compensation the club will receive, with Elliot becoming injured on international duty.
It is not quite the equivalent to the Michael Owen injury playing for England – in which we bought Obafemi Martins’ with the majority part of the compensation…. still, it would be only fair if the club was compensated enough, to purchase a stand in keeper until the end of next season.
To be fair, the last time we were in this situation, we had a 21 year old Alnwick come in… Darlow is 25 with more senior games under his belt, so a bit more hope is present.
The Irish FA needs to cough up for the Elliot injury.

Comment #35I found this quote interesting from the Gutirrez tribunal:
“He also alleged that Pardew had given “suspicious evidence” and that his account had been “tailored” to fit the club’s versions of events.”
Is that a posh way of saying Pardew is a lying b*st*rd? 🙂
