Benitez – We Have To Give Everything – I Will Not Give Up

1:28 pm, Friday, April 1st, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 82 Comments

Rafa has given his press conference for the game tomorrow at Norwich City and when asked whether Newcastle had to avoid defeat to avoid relegation he answered that question in a positive way – “We want to win. We go there to win.”

Since the Sunderland 1-1 draw when we came back well in the second half after being 1-0 down at half time, Rafa said the Newcastle players have been “very positive” over the last two weeks during the International break, but that he has also lost Massadio Haidara to another injury during the break.

Karl Darlow in training this week
Rafa Benitez – he’s done well and is very confident – he has experience in the Championship

Here’s some of what Rafa said and it seems he was upbeat and seems to be inspiring the lads so we can go there tomorrow and do everything possible to win the game – Rafa doesn’t go into game to draw them – he wants to win every single one.

And why not?

Here’s some of what the Newcastle manager had to say today and there is still another training session this afternoon when Rafa will decide who will play at left back with Dummett, Colback and Haidara all unavailable.

“The reaction of the team against Sunderland was really positive. We have the right mentality to go to Norwich and win. We know we can do it .”

“I have had this relegation-fight experience with Extremadura.”   “We have to give everything and I will not give up.”

“Signing a goalkeeper on a free transfer was always a non-starter.” “We have to support Karl Darlow and do what we need to do.”

“He’s training well, we know he can do well and he has enough experience in the Championship.”

Rafa knows he needs to inspire the players and get them in the right frame of mind for the vital game tomorrow.

If we can get 3 points in that game it will show Rafa is starting to have the positive impact we all expected from him, but more importantly, fairly soon too.

With seven games to play after Saturday’s game and with 3 points gained on Norwich, we would be in decent enough shape and we could survive the drop.

    Darlow dont know

    Janmaat mbemba lascalles sissoko

Townsand Jonjo tiote de jong wini

    Mitro. .perez…Anita to come on

  • 2 stuart no9 // Apr 1, 2016 at 1:39 PM

Has experience in the championship ??? Mmmm . Is that the criteria for saving a prem club of going down ??

  • 3 Lindisfarne // Apr 1, 2016 at 1:42 PM

Make that into a 4-1-4-1 formation and you could be close, but it depends on how adaptable Benitez is prepared to be. Townsend could possibly be a more suitable LB.

Sorry to be negative but why should darlow fill any fan full of confidence .from what I’ve seen of him , he made so many mistakes v brom . He looked nervous and and his positioning was awful. Untill I see different , he’s not up to the job in hand

  • 5 Lindisfarne // Apr 1, 2016 at 1:47 PM

    Newcastle United
What they need to do Become more direct. Seemingly incapable of passing through opponents, this team is better suited to counter-attacking. More quality crosses are required and, possibly, a switch to 4-4-2. Moussa Sissoko could provide an unlikely answer to the problem vacancy at left-back and Cheick Tioté may need to be recalled in order to anchor midfield and protect a dangerously under-staffed defence.

Success at this stage Survival Key player Papiss Cissé

Townsand could be good call but I’d prefer him as rm to protect the galloping janmaat. On another note…as townsand wasn’t away this international break a lot of defensive drills might have been focused on him in the lb position or Anita.
Think sissoko could be a good lb to start with with his power galloping forward.

Your argument for how to play..the Steve mcclaren approach or the pardew approach ..its certainly an interesting one

    Stuart no 9

I take your point regarding darlow but we have no choice here but to just see how he gets on sat. Think positive

  • 7 Fostino // Apr 1, 2016 at 2:04 PM

Forgot to say in Benetez I trust 100% in regards team sheet..formation and how we play. Stay up this year and we’ll be top 8 next year

  • 8 stuart no9 // Apr 1, 2016 at 2:28 PM

Fostino . I know your right . and to be fair to darlow I have only seen him once . Let’s hope that was an off day and he settles down and prove me wrong

  • 9 Fostino // Apr 1, 2016 at 2:38 PM

    Stuart no.9

I have your same worries regarding darlow but when he’s our only choice, all we can do is pray. Il also admit I had the same worries about lascalles in his first few nufc outings but he’s slowly winning me over with recent performances…albeit we’ve lost those games.

  • 10 firebug666 // Apr 1, 2016 at 2:43 PM

If Benitez can instil the same calm, confidence and desire into the team that he is showing I think we will be ok.

We do have some defensive worries, but a win tomorrow will go a long way to raising their confidence, and just maybe we will see the best of them at last.

  • 11 lesh // Apr 1, 2016 at 2:53 PM

I fear that with Woodman as the only keeper to cover, we could be in deep doo-doo were Darlow to be injured or sent off.

Charnley should’ve signed Harper (yes, water under the bridge I know) but we could do with an experienced, level-headed keeper on the bench instead of young Woodman at such a critical time.

Surely there must be one out there who’s out of contract and able to sign.

But let’s not worry, between Carr and Charnley, they’ve made sure we’ve got an abundance of rubbish to save our season, save the Club.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Carr must carry much of the responsibility for our woefully inadequate and under-resourced squad but Charnley was the one who’ll have saught Ashley’s OK to sign the players we wasted over £70m on.

  • 12 lesh // Apr 1, 2016 at 2:53 PM

    * saught = sought

  • 13 Goldmbemba // Apr 1, 2016 at 3:12 PM

Not sure what to make of Thauvin saying this:

‘I have a four year contract with Newcastle, the situation is very clear for me, I want to succeed in England. ‘

I thought he couldnt wait to get out. Maybe he’s really saying ‘if the club stay up and Rafa is the boss then i want to be there next season’

  • 14 Shadow_Shearer // Apr 1, 2016 at 3:31 PM

Guaranteed Norwich will park the bus tomorrow & be happy to play out a 0-0. Won’t be an easy game, will be difficult to break them down

  • 15 Goldmbemba // Apr 1, 2016 at 3:42 PM

Not sure they will park the bus, they will go for the win.

We are one of their better chances of 3 points before the end of the season. They will park the bus with the bigger teams i reckon.

Have to agree they would probably take a point though.

  • 16 beermonkey // Apr 1, 2016 at 3:49 PM

its a diffrent ball game having rafa as manager
we have gone from Aubameyang going to dortmund to work with klopp rather than work with pards
and when we hired mclaren sissoko when asked went who,

there wont be many that wont want to work with rafa we just got to keep him and let him manage

  • 17 SPRINGY // Apr 1, 2016 at 3:51 PM

i cant see norwich parking the bus against us, we’ve been poor away from home all season and they know if they win it’ll be a lot harder for us to make up the points gap….i expect a fast start from them to try and get an early goal….they get twitchy near the end of the game and park the bus, but until then…they will be going for it

  • 18 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 1, 2016 at 3:52 PM

People really plonking Sissoko in at LB on the basis of 30mins against a Sunderland that had all but given up on attacking?

Anita played the majority of his time there with Ajax the season before he came here. Has to be him, however PL teams are much more exploitative of physical shortcomings and whenever he or Colback are at LB they get bombarded aerially with diagonals. Dummet looking better in his absence isn’t he?

    Gini and Townsend switching around.

  • 19 Tsunki // Apr 1, 2016 at 3:56 PM

Don’t know about any of G2’s famous Event Thongs, but I think tomorrow would be a good time to don the Sturdy Elasticated-Leg Crackers of Resolve for another 90+ minutes of hair pulling, bowel loosening terror. it’s become less of an entertainment than a dentist appointment, and not the nice kind.

  • 20 Tsunki // Apr 1, 2016 at 3:57 PM

People should plonk sissoko on the bench. I’m sure Rafa can see he’s unsettling for the team.

  • 21 SPRINGY // Apr 1, 2016 at 3:58 PM

i think the lad deserves some credit for saying that, yes it has’nt worked this season but he’s came in to a side low on quality, confidence and we’ve seen better palyers then him struggle in the first season…..he may not be good enough…im not saying he is but at least he sounds like he’s willing to have the bottle to try again…and who knows under a different coach he may flourish…look at ben arfa at nice.

  • 22 SPRINGY // Apr 1, 2016 at 4:00 PM

if sissoko is willing to tackle and put a shift in…i like that team…as long as gini is mostly right…not stuck there just majority of the time.

  • 23 Fostino // Apr 1, 2016 at 4:13 PM

Sky says janmaat out so new team is

    Darlow dont know

    Anita mbemba lascalles sissoko

Townsand tiote Jonjo de jong wini

Quality team..perez & mitro to come in

  • 24 beefman13 // Apr 1, 2016 at 4:19 PM

I would think Norwich would be smarting after the hammering they got up here, can’t see them being afraid one bit of us now, the pressure for the toon is massive as it is with Norwich, owt could happen 2moro, we are deep in the woods, can we get out, I can’t see it on this season’s performances so far but there is always hope, time for them to earn there multi mega wages I think.

  • 25 beermonkey // Apr 1, 2016 at 4:30 PM

its not hard to get the best out of benny let him do as he pleases

didnt really see enough of thauvin to form an opinion on him but for what we got back on cabella i would rather have kept him

it will always help players settle if they come into a team that are playing well,i think thauvin got caught up in a battle of power with carr mclaren dug his heels in and wouldnt play him
i am sure if rafa is here in the summer he will get a fair crack

  • 26 Essex Geordie Bill // Apr 1, 2016 at 4:32 PM

Super Dariolow will do OK, clean sheet for him tomorrow.

Does Sterry train with the first team squad I would have thought he might be in the frame. He is a proper defender.

Having put that thought in I would go with most of the peoples choice on here of Anita.

I also reckon that Norwich will be gung -ho at the start so there should be good chances for break away goals by us. Hopefully our new striker coach has pointed out where the goal is and the ref doesn’t support them.

  • 27 sing in the corner // Apr 1, 2016 at 4:43 PM

I think Sterry is right footed / right back…

  • 28 sing in the corner // Apr 1, 2016 at 5:18 PM

Well stuff you, sky sports super 6 pundits! They all say 1-1 for our game tomorrow… Except jeff Stelling who says 2-1 Norwich!!

  • 29 Tsunki // Apr 1, 2016 at 5:52 PM

I believe SM played Sterry at LB when he stuck him in against that Norwegian side in Spain. He looked pretty reliable but seemed ready to be caught on the ball. Mind you they all did.

  • 30 Toon Tang // Apr 1, 2016 at 5:55 PM

Wouldn’t play Anita at left back, he’s about 3 foot tall and will get absolutely obliterated in the air like Aarons did in his second match there. Would stick moussa there for his height advantage and beef. He also offers zero offensively so let him just sit and cover the cb’s with his pace.

I’ve gone defeat for this game to balance things out on the winbar.

  • 31 Bambams // Apr 1, 2016 at 5:59 PM

Been to the training ground today at lunchtime. By the look of the cars some of the players were obviously still training. Not a full car park but a good 6 or 7 ‘Footballer’ cars there.
Spoke to one person who stated the difference since Rafa has arrived is massive !!! Throughout the whole training set up. They reckon the players have all been impressed. …especially SDJ who I am told is flying in training.

Just a guess but I think SDJ could be a starter tomorrow.

Don’t fret about Darlow, he is a very capable keeper.

    3-1 to Newcastle.

    Keep the faith

  • 32 Toon Tang // Apr 1, 2016 at 5:59 PM

Tough one to call this one tomorrow. It’s either gonna be a no score bore draw or a scraped scrappy one niller either way.

We could do with the points though eh

  • 33 toon kk // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:02 PM

Why’s it unbelievable? We’ve been useless all season, I’m sure Rafa will help our squad but we still lack quality in key areas. How good do you think we are?

  • 34 Tsunki // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:08 PM

Nope got that wrong Sterry was on for janmaat and crossed for the hill. I’m thinking of Dan Barlaser aren’t I?

So, Tiote in squad tomorrow. Too right.

  • 35 Toon Tang // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:08 PM

Looking at hwa formation with sissoko at dm would maybe work. Has he played there before? I still wouldn’t fully trust Anita at lb though even if he did play there occasionly for ajax. No beef or pace or height or nowt

  • 36 Tsunki // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:09 PM

    The goal. The hill?

  • 37 Toon Tang // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:13 PM

    Crossed for the hill

    Sounds biblical

  • 38 Tsunki // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:13 PM

While I don’t like the idea of including sissoko at all really, putting him at LB is mind-bogglingly odd. He really doesn’t tackle – now call me a stickler, but tackling is sort of job basics for that position isn’t it?

  • 39 bettyswallocks // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:19 PM

Toon kk is right. How dare you suggest that we might win tomorrow !

  • 40 bettyswallocks // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:21 PM

Tsunki….. I think you’re a bit over the hill to be discussing football matters.

  • 41 Tsunki // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:21 PM

    You’re a hill

  • 42 Toon Tang // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:22 PM

He doesn’t warrant a place full stop aye but were in that desperate position having of not much else to choose from. Defensively anyway.

What’s your suggestion for the crisis tsunki?

  • 43 Toon Tang // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:25 PM

    *Of having sorry

  • 44 Laurent Robert 32 // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:27 PM

Bambams, thanks for sharing that. I rate Siem’s potential highly so I hope we eventually give him a proper run of games and he can produce.

He has the potential to contribute a lot in various ways: Assists, goals – long, medium, short. Positionally he can be excellent by making himself available in areas to keep fluidity moving forward (thus also improving defence as we have the ball). He can take free kicks as well. Leadership and communication as well which I’ve noticed on a number of occasions in previous games and of course, he was captain at Ajax for a while. Just hope he can stay fit – At Ajax he racked up a consistent number of appearances before his lung issues it seemed.

No doubt Rafa has made an impression. A proper manager with really good success for once in a while.

  • 45 bettyswallocks // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:28 PM

    Hillbilly more like.

  • 46 Tsunki // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:30 PM

Toon Tang I think it’s desperate indeed for us to consider sissoko for lb, same as it would be to commit Aarons there. If Anita is fit I would put him there anything but sissoko. Well almost

  • 47 Tsunki // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:31 PM

    You are

  • 48 Tsunki // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:31 PM

  • 49 Toon Tang // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:36 PM

You obviously haven’t heard/seen the Newcastle way over the last few years haha. Desperate times call for desperate measures lad. Would stick Anita at rb first with him being right footed and all. Makes sense. Janmaat is out so whos going there?

  • 50 Essex Geordie Bill // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:38 PM

Being short isn’t necessarily bad for a defender, whats more important is tackling ability and speed.

That Sterry is right footed doesn’t mean he can’t play at LB, mind is’s a moot point as he isn’t even going to be in the squad. I was just wondering why he wasn’t.

  • 51 NUFCPaul // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:46 PM

Not sure why people have a problem with Anita’s height playing at fullback? His main job is to tackle and block crosses into the box. I know you may argue that we need height for defending corners but that’s where your centrebacks earn their wage. Having Anita at fullback isn’t ideal, but he’s played there before and we don’t have many other options right now, do we?

  • 52 Toon Tang // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:47 PM

Nah I suppose not but I’m thinking colback and Anita when we’ve seen them there have struggled. Dummet does well defensively but offers nowt going forward. We have no players in these positions that can do the all round job like a proper lb rb is supposed to. Areas we should certainly be strengthening during the summer.

Even Janmaat who gives it his best shot gets caught out a lot of the time.

  • 53 Toon Tang // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:54 PM

If Janmaats out who do we stick at rb? I’d go Anita and stick sissoko either at lb or dm. Can he play there though? I don’t remember seeing him at dm in the past. Lw he’s looked awful at and rw he has performed superbly in the past but we’ve not seen anything like his best this season.

  • 54 VanToonMan // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:54 PM

If Sissoko is capable of being a full back I would play him at right back – at least he is then on his right foot and not in a position whereby he has to tackle and pass with his wrong foot which is dangerous given that he is not a natural defender in the first place.

Anita or Janmaat at LB – maybe Janmaat being on his wrong foot means he won’t take so many shots and crosses (wasted) like usual and keep it simple and give it to townsend or whoever is on LW

  • 55 VanToonMan // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:57 PM

    —-Wijnaldum————De Jong———–Townsend——

    —————————–Perez or Mitro———————

  • 56 VanToonMan // Apr 1, 2016 at 6:58 PM

Wijnaldum and Townsend to interchange between LW and RW thoughout the game

  • 57 Toon Tang // Apr 1, 2016 at 7:05 PM

Looks good vantoonman, Janmaat is supposedly out though although I haven’t checked it myself.

If we absolutely have to play sissoko it shouldn’t be in a defensive roll either mid or fullback? Got nothing going forward really and gini and townshend running and interchanging on the flanks worked well In the second half of scumderland game eh

  • 58 SPRINGY // Apr 1, 2016 at 7:08 PM

are you not thinking of gibson at leftback against the norwegian side?

  • 59 Toon Tang // Apr 1, 2016 at 7:09 PM

I wouldn’t know whether to start mitro with Siem behind him and bring on perez with 20/30 to go when the defenders have hopefully been bashed to within am Inch of there lives by mitro haha

Or do it vice versa and have the defendera thinking bloody hell not this guy when mitro is introduced

  • 60 Toon Tang // Apr 1, 2016 at 7:11 PM

Or just chuck them both on and hope the ref cant count.

Anyways I’m gone to scran this bacon and cheese quiche. Rave safely kids

Now then toon kk I thought, the other day, you promised to be more optimistic 🙂
I really can’t believe people want Sissoko at LB – he can’t tackle to save his life. Surely Anita has to play LB as he has experience playing there for Ajax.

  • 75 welshgeordie9 // Apr 1, 2016 at 8:26 PM

Right then guys as there’s no football to talk about until tomorrow, how about naming your 10 favourite music bands, mine in no particular order.

    1. Disturbed
    2. Nirvana
    3. Puddle of Mudd
    4. Rammstein
    5. Foo Fighters
    6. Green Day
    7. Limp Bizkit
    8. Guns n Roses
    9. Nickelback
    10. Bowling for soup

  • 76 Novocastrian66 // Apr 1, 2016 at 8:28 PM

When people start talking about not giving up, it is recognition of being in a hopeless situation. Not a fact just my opinion.

  • 78 toon kk // Apr 1, 2016 at 8:41 PM

I am more optimistic but my point is the pundits on sky like anyone come to that can only give a prediction on our past performances.
Just because we think or hope we’ll win doesn’t garentee winning results mate.
A couple of wins and predictions will change.

  • 79 welshgeordie9 // Apr 1, 2016 at 8:53 PM

Nice to see everyone’s chipping in with their favourites, grumpy lot.

  • 80 Offkey // Apr 1, 2016 at 9:03 PM

Welsh – bands, really? That’s for those who like guitar music and such. Listen to some grime and get some taste, maybe look up some people from Northampton, izzie Gibbs and wierdoe etc. Maybe a bit young for you, also requires a sense of humour….. Deffo not your thing

  • 81 Offkey // Apr 1, 2016 at 9:13 PM

Welsh – ok, the xx are good

Thanks for the info on Ten thousand fists. I’ll download it from iTunes! Not my normal taste but variety is whatever they say. I do like Green Day though; got the bullet in the bible album live at MK !
