Here’s A Glowing Endorsement Of Karl Darlow

9:59 am, Friday, April 1st, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 28 Comments

Jamaal Lascelles knows all about Karl Darlow since the two of them played together at Nottingham Forest for a few seasons before they were signed up by Newcastle almost two years ago.

And the 22 year-old center-back has given a glowing endorsement of the 25 year-old goalkeeper today.

And if Karl is anywhere near as good as Jamaal says he is then Newcastle will have no problems with Karl through the final eight games of the season as he deputizes for the injured Rob Elliot.

Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow in the summer of 2014

The two of them are very good friends and this is what Jamaal told the BBC about Karl today:

“It’s not nice to see anybody injured but that’s football for you.” “He will have a speedy recovery, he works hard in the gym.” “This is an opportunity for Karl Darlow to step in.”

“He’s a great goalkeeper.” “I played with him at Nottingham Forest plenty of times and he will be really confident going into the game on Saturday.”

“I’m sure he will be fine.” “Me and Karl have a great relationship.”“He commands the 18-yard box really well so I am really confident with him.”

“He’s really confident, I spoke to him, and he can’t wait to get a run of games.” “The game he played he didn’t have preparation.”

“No excuses or anything but at least he knows he will be the goalkeeper between now and the end of the season.”

“He will be confident and I am sure he will be fine.”

Jamaal makes a good point about the game Karl played at West Brom, when Rob Elliot took sick in the warm-up – he had food poisoning as it turned out.

Karl had no preparation at all for that game.

He will be much better prepared for tomorrow, especially since we now have the very talented and experienced Rafa Benitez managing the club.

Great opportunity for Darlow. In 18 months he has gone from playing in the championship to being guaranteed number 1 keeper spot for the rest of the season in an Benitez team. He’ll be pinching himself.

Darlow will be fine! Its not an alnwick situation, the guy has over 100 appearances at forrest and captained the side once or twice! Hes a solid 7/10 keeper who was bought to eventually become #1 im sure.
Helps that him and Lascelles know each other well too

I seen Darlow a couple of times when forest were on tv over here in Thailand last season. He looked decent, confident ,athletic and good at catching crosses.Time will tell if he’s up to the job,I wish him well.

I agree. Absolutely nothing can go wrong now. And I can’t see any way I will get my comeuppance for saying so. 🙂

He’s hardly going to say “he’s $hit, we’re doooomed” now is he!!!

  • 6 Toon_Tom // Apr 1, 2016 at 10:41 AM

saying the Darlo had “no preparation” against West Brom is a bit silly…

What does he do for a living?

  • 7 martoon // Apr 1, 2016 at 10:54 AM

Toon_Tom @6 – A bit unfair – if you take a work analogy where you are asked to give a presentation – you do the necessary research and mentally prepare yourself. If you were asked to do it at a moments notice you would ‘wing’ your way through but it would be nowhere near as good as one you had time to prepare for. I guess preparing for a game is similar!

I think Lascelles has generally done OK so far and I’d much prefer him being in than Stevie ‘Anything Can Happen’ Taylor.

A big plus about Lascelles is his heading ability. He leaps well and has a pretty strong head of the ball which is always a good asset to have.

Hopefully Darlow will do well. One things for sure, it’s a great chance for him to put himself on the big stage, one which I’m sure he’s dreamed of for a long time. As Elliott has shown, if he can consistently play to a very high standard, he may well keep his place as I don’t think Krul would have got straight back in this time. End of the season may not see him keep his place next year, but still.

It’s all down to whether Darlow wants it enough.

We only have the same pool of defenders as we had when McC was here. Now Colo and Dummett are injured and Colback suspended, Rafa can only juggle what he has available.

How many times this season have we heard how well the training has gone only to be left scratching our heads after the game. Bear in mind that the squad hasn’t been good enough to compete with most other squads, so to do well in training when practicing against members of our own crap squad means nowt once we are up against a proper team.

    morning all

i am not overly worried about darlow coming and it might help having laschelles infront of him they have played alot together

left back spot has to goto anita
if anita is injured we have in thauvin a left winger thats converted to a dm so he knows how to defend and i would try him

  • 11 sing in the corner // Apr 1, 2016 at 11:24 AM

    Do you mean Saivet?

  • 12 sing in the corner // Apr 1, 2016 at 11:24 AM

    ..and I mean Beer 🙂

  • 13 hibbitt // Apr 1, 2016 at 11:25 AM

thauvin at left back don’t know how we can do that ?????

  • 14 reilly // Apr 1, 2016 at 11:27 AM

robocop has been moved to navi-x

  • 15 beermonkey // Apr 1, 2016 at 11:27 AM

    sing in the

i wondered who would spot that first lol

    yes i do
i would do some form of embarrassed emoji but dunno how

  • 16 beermonkey // Apr 1, 2016 at 11:30 AM

do u know why its moved

  • 17 reilly // Apr 1, 2016 at 11:36 AM

i dont know, but its a slimmed down version on navi-x.
i think the developer might just set it up for footy it was when it first came out.

  • 18 beermonkey // Apr 1, 2016 at 11:39 AM

    at least its still going

  • 19 sing in the corner // Apr 1, 2016 at 11:39 AM

Left back / Centre mid…It’s the key decision for Rafa, no doubt. It’s a bit of a leap of faith to put Saivet in to start CM, in my opinion, only because he hasn’t been fancied at all up to now – must be based on how he’s been in training? Can’t see Wij playing there, looks like a fish out of water playing that deep.

  • 20 beermonkey // Apr 1, 2016 at 11:47 AM

    sing in the

out wide will be townsend and sissoko
    middle shelvey

then i think it all depends on if rafa wants to bring in dejong
he has been bigging him so might look to bring him in next to mitro then wigi has to play further back

  • 21 firebug666 // Apr 1, 2016 at 11:50 AM

I agree I think De Jong will play, and I also think Anita or Mbabu if fit should be at LB.

  • 22 beermonkey // Apr 1, 2016 at 11:56 AM

rafa has mentioned experience so for me has to be anita at leftback and although dejong is not experienced in the prem he has been around a bit and a lot of experience in the champions league

  • 23 Jib // Apr 1, 2016 at 12:01 PM

Taylor has a lot of experience

  • 24 firebug666 // Apr 1, 2016 at 12:11 PM

Berr I thta’s for sure de Jong knows his stuff, and can play football, pick a pass and find the back of the net…..If he can stay fit that is.

I know what Rafa means when he says he wants experience, I also think Mbabu has enough, but you a proably right Anita will start.

  • 25 firebug666 // Apr 1, 2016 at 12:12 PM

  • 26 The overrated Frenchman // Apr 1, 2016 at 12:20 PM

I feel certain de Jong will start. He should have been played more this season although obviously injuries haven’t helped his cause. He’s our most natural no.10 as well as being probably our best technical player and Benitez is surely astute enough to realise it.

  • 27 beermonkey // Apr 1, 2016 at 12:27 PM

    lol fair point
    experience and brains then

is mbabu fit i am not sure
either him or anita i dont mind which

is jannmat going to make the game

  • 28 jimmysmith // Apr 1, 2016 at 1:03 PM
