Toon Tang true but Tata steel is perfect example of why the elites want out, because the EU inhibits their ability the shunt the yokels around like pawns. They blocked EU tariif that would have save the Welsh plant.

  • 2 JamesToon // Apr 2, 2016 at 5:39 PM

Mbemba was awful today as well and Taylor is just…Taylor.

Players who I think will defo stay:
    Dummett
    Lascelles
    Darlow
    Elliot
    Armstrong
    Colback

    On the fence:
Townsend (feel like a PL club might come in for him)
Shelvey (same with Townsend, they both might have the motivation to stay and fight)
Mbemba (wouldn’t be surprised if a champions league/decent European club like Monaco came in for him)
Mitrovic (might also have the courage to stay and fight but he might show enough in the last few games to be a decent striker and could get an offer from a CL club)

The rest will all leave and hope they do cos they don’t deserve to wear the shirt

All this talk of janmaat wanting to leave for a better club, I don’t think he’s shown enough that he deserves to but wouldn’t be bothered if we let him go. Getting frustrated with Gini as he’s dissapparead the last few games (always disappears in away games)

  • 3 ilovetoon8788 // Apr 2, 2016 at 5:39 PM

He must have been watching another game.

  • 4 lochinvar // Apr 2, 2016 at 5:42 PM

So if we leave the EU jobs will be lost ?

We’re still in the EU so try telling that to the steel guys on Teesside and in Wales…..there’s an elephant in the room..and it’s Chinese and it’s crapping all over the carpet

No steel and we can’t build ships for our own Navy either – is Ashley working in Government ?

  • 5 manxpie // Apr 2, 2016 at 5:45 PM

so 4 home games left but 2 are against man city and spurs
and 1 away game which is winable against villa
so 7 – 10 points is all i can see
    so not a chance unfortunately

  • 6 Toon Tang // Apr 2, 2016 at 5:48 PM

Sawbuck what you’ve wrote is exactly right, if we leave eu it basically gives the 1% an open door to tighten our belts further so to speak without having to run new legislations and acts by Europe first. Something which has hindered them since day one.

Anyways, we will get battered for talking politics on here much longer haha

  • 7 manxpie // Apr 2, 2016 at 5:50 PM

lets face it our eu players haven’t exactly done much for us have they so not much of a worry imo

  • 8 manxpie // Apr 2, 2016 at 5:50 PM

    recently i should add

  • 9 Graeme // Apr 2, 2016 at 5:51 PM

Whatever it costs – the Lunatics in charge of the asylum need to do whatever it takes, whatever it costs, to keep Benitez at NUFC.

    Benjohnsen

We’ve been saying the same thing for years, who’s to say that he will hire the right people, or even get rid of charnley and carr

  • 11 manxpie // Apr 2, 2016 at 5:52 PM

watching the spurs game its unbelievable the gulf in movement of the ball compared to our shite
every player on the pitch is on the move looking for space

  • 12 Sawbuck // Apr 2, 2016 at 5:54 PM

@Toon Tang @lochnivar hhaha I dont wanna get banned by Ed either. .,, The nobs wanna turn the country into the world’s largest open air prison.. no more Auf Weidersen Pet

  • 13 The next Mike Williamson // Apr 2, 2016 at 5:54 PM

The best we can hope for
    Southampton (a) D
    Swansea (h) W
    Man C (h) D
    Liverpool (a) L
    Palace (h) W
    Villa (a) W
    Spurs (h) L
We really need Spurs to be out the title race so maybe we can get another point.
    11 points – 36 points

means Norwhich just have to get 5 points to be above us. They might struggle.
    Palace (a) L
    Sunderland (h) D
    Arsenal & Man U LL
    Watford (h) W
    Everton (a) L
    4 points

  • 14 JamesToon // Apr 2, 2016 at 5:56 PM

  • 16 JamesToon // Apr 2, 2016 at 5:57 PM

So as Rafa will be off soon, any suggestions for next manager in the championship? Monk? Rodgers?

  • 17 Tsunki // Apr 2, 2016 at 5:58 PM

    Goodbye, Blue Sky,
    Goodbye,
    Blu-u-ue Sky,
    Goodbye.
    Goodbye

Bit of Floyd for you there.

Our only succour at the end of this rope is that our fellow danglers are the mackems and villa. Whoop-de-dooo.

  • 18 Tsunki // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:01 PM

Something to little controversial here, but maybe Jonas and Anita didn’t do us any favours against West ham. Maybe those saying last year that dropping to the championship would be good for us were right after all? I believe it would have been highly likely we would have banjoed SM mid way as we pottered around the middle of the league, then got a decent promotion specialist Manager to assemble a team of hard knocks to come straight back up. Then Ashley would have two relegation under his belt and shaped up or shipped out. Just a thought.

  • 19 manxpie // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:01 PM

jamestoon aye but it just shows how poor our players are
the ammount of times today we didn’t just hold on to the ball and pass it about was criminal and the reason for that is no movement and very thick footballing players

  • 20 toonking // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:02 PM

    bambam

where can this twist come, first and foremost we need palace and sunderland to do a shocker and beat norwich next week and the week after.

The you need ourselves to do shockers.
we’ve lot 8 away games including watford, westbrom, norwich and everton “who’s got the worse home form in the premier league”

So how sure can you be of us getting any wins against

Southampton (A)-A team who’s only lost once (against newcastle) since getting promotion

    Liverpool (A)

Villa (A)- A fixture we don’t get until end of season

So now we look at the home games we’ll probably need at least 3 wins.

    Swansea (H)

City (H)- with a defence like ours how can anyone believe we’ll win, recent seasons we’ve constantly leaked 3 or more goals in fixtures against city and the defence is a it’s worst state yet

    Palace (H)

spurs (H)- given how big a win could be for spurs this is a ery unlikely win. Theirs more chance o spurs and leicester city going down to last game than ourselves and norwich.

  • 21 Tsunki // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:02 PM

I believe that’s another PL record you’ve handed us, Mike. Thank you.

  • 22 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:03 PM

A Mitrovic/Armstrong partnership could send us back up, but Carr and whoever else is involved at selecting and negotiating for players needs to be kicked out. Manager is a mystery – I think Hull City might just fail to be promoted and we’ll get Steve Bruce, least he knows how to organise a defence.

We need to be on the lookout for personnel similar to Nolan and Barton who also had a great, committed group of soldiers like Jonas, Lovenkrands, Carroll. Are there any players of that ilk out there to be got?

We definitely won’t waltz it like last time, that’s for sure.

Before any signings I can see:

    _______________Krul_______________
    Mbabu___Mbemba___Lascelles___Dummet
    Aarons___???????____Colback___Ameobi
    _________Mitrovic___Armstrong

Sissoko, Janmaat, Perez and Gini will be the first to leave.

Townsend and Shelvey having only just come don’t have the rapport to stay, Nolan was a different breed to them, just can’t see 2 young hungry fringe England internationals sticking around.

Colo, Cisse and Tiote will finally depart, the part-timers that they are should’ve been long gone and it’s those types that don’t want to be here, yet for whatever reason stick around like a bad smell, which is a big contributor to the problems.

Haidara should be thrown on the scrapheap as should Saylor – his contract renewal will be a big indicator of where we’re heading, just like Jonas been booted out was the signal for what lay ahead last summer.

Obertan could stay, but I imagine a PL team or a foreign team will think he could be of use given his assets.

Riviere, Anita and SDJ could be difficult to move on for various reasons.

    Saivet, who knows?

Schteve and Mike Willo will meet up for a pint, share stories and shit themselves laughing,

  • 23 The next Mike Williamson // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:03 PM

Team if we go down (not including new signings)
Darlow/ Mbabu Mbemba Colo Dummet/ Shelvey Saivet/ Perez Armstrong Townsend/ Mitrovic
However that is a young side and I dont think Benitez will play many of the youths.

  • 24 JamesToon // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:05 PM

Hope we tie Aarons to a new contract could see him establish himself as a decent player for us next season

  • 25 JamesToon // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:07 PM

    Team for championship without signings:

    Elliot
    Mbabu-Lascelles-Dummett-Gibson
    Townsend-Shelvey-Colback-Aarons
    Mitrovic-Armstrong

  • 26 The next Mike Williamson // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:09 PM

If we clear out Sissoko, Colo, Taylor, Colback, Tiote, Cisse, Gouffran, Obertan, Townsend, Riviere then it will be worth it. Unfortunately the new manager will probably think Riviere etc might be able to cope with the championship. I very much doubt that is the case.

  • 27 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:09 PM

Give over – Rafa will not be with us in the Championship.

  • 28 toonking // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:11 PM

    lower case are might leave

  • 29 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:12 PM

  • 30 Ron Knee // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:12 PM

We’re looking through a glass darkly. We don’t know if Charmless and Carr will still be there next season. If they are, it’ll be the appointment of another desperate failure as ‘Head Coach’.
Although we can be pretty sure that Sissoko will be snapped up by PSG, or similar!

  • 31 Sawbuck // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:14 PM

It’s all about getting a right manager in who can motivate the lot to get back straight up.

  • 38 manxpie // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:20 PM

shelvey townsend dejong mitro will be gone aswell as the shirkers of course
even if its to teams that replace us
sorry but there is no chance of us keeping them unless ashley “lends” us another 50 or so million which then the cycle repeats itself happy days hey!?

  • 39 JamesToon // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:20 PM

Don’t want Bruce anywhere near this club

  • 40 ilovetoon8788 // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:20 PM

Our scouting team immediately now have to source for players capable to play in the championship. The best is recruiting players from other championship clubs who are doing well.

  • 41 The overrated Frenchman // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:22 PM

The defence, if left as it is, will take us down without doubt. Rafa says it’s easy to fix the defence but he was obviously not aware of just how poor our defenders really are. I’d replace all four who started today. Janmaat has been awful this season and clearly wants away. M’bemba showed promise early on but is error prone and seems to have got worse as the season has gone on. He was diabolical today. Taylor has simply never been a good PL CB, and Anita has never been a good PL player, full stop.
Next match I’d have M’babu, Colo, Lascelles, Sissoko. Shuffling deckchairs on the Titanic I know but surely worth a shot.

  • 42 Pigott93 // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:22 PM

I’m not as opptomistic as some people that some players will stay, mitro will not stay or mbemba, same as tiote, wiki, de Hong, Perez, Townsend, Cisse, janmaat these will not want to play championship

  • 43 martoon // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:24 PM

I’m absolutely gutted – I really thought we could beat Norwich – to be brutally honest we deserve to go down now. What really boils my p*ss is that the first 2 goals came from needless freekicks given away around the box – just pitiful.

  • 44 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:24 PM

Oh and I’d like to ad, none of those I think will leave am I bemoaning, case of good riddance on all counts.

  • 45 OneAlanShearer // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:25 PM

There will be a mass exodus when we are relegates with all the better or so called better players leaving. We won’t come straight back up and rafa won’t stay for the fight.

  • 46 toon kk // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:25 PM

I predicted another defeat, although I admire people’s optimistic views thinking Rafa can save us and getting playing good football, and maybe he can. But he CAN’T give players quality they don’t possess.
I’ve said all season we’ll be relegated and we will be.
My advice is to support our team and look forward to championship football were we can be more competitive (hopefully).

  • 47 toonking // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:28 PM

    manxpie

I can’t see townsend or shelvey leaving they could have refused to join us in january. Now they’ll have much less attraction and clubs will feel they’ve done poor considering we’ve remained poor and stilll in relegation. Shelvey himself could have went to a beter club in january but decide to switch from one relegation battling team into an even worse one.

  • 48 toon kk // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:28 PM

    Martoon
See I told you to expect a defeat we’re not good enough mate, I want to be optimistic but I prefer to be realistic.

  • 50 G // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:29 PM

We still have a fighting chance of survival. Fat lady isnt singing yet, although she will deffo be starting to warm her voice up soon.

  • 51 magscar // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:31 PM

Now clutching at Norwich to do us a favour and beat Mackems and Palace to give us any chance. Palace’s point at West Ham might prove vital though.

Difficult to see where we can get a win from as we can’t keep clean sheets and continue to give away unnecessary free kicks.

Benitez subs are bizarre but seem to improve side in last 1/2 hour. He needs to get it right from the off . I know we were within seconds of 0-0 for half time ( presumably the plan ) but they had already scorned chances and we had had none as far as I recall.

I was hoping for an improvement in our passing and movement together with retaining the ball better but we are just as poor as under McClaren. Newcastle fans kept ball longer than team did !

  • 52 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Apr 2, 2016 at 6:32 PM

    Blackley
I and I got slated for saying we would get beat.
and sadly I cannot see us winning another game.
Players are shot don’t want the ball, don’t run past there man.
Pedantic slow slow slow pass back and another keeper who cannot kick the ball.

NO movement passing Shite, commitment Shite, everything Shite.

Gulf between us and Aston Villa and the rest of the premiership.

Relegated with 27 points I reckon – 2 draws against Palace and Villa.

How’s about Raf throwing the towel in – saying I cannot work with this lot of losers – who basically don’t give a stuff.

As for Rafa why did he drop Lascalles for that numpty Taylor.

And for there first goal did you see Sissoko looked like he closed his eyes and dived forward hoping the ball would hit him or the ref gave a foul.

    ARGHHHHHH we’re Shite

I just feel it’s still not over and it might be the case if we get to the last game of the season needing a win against Spurs.

Can’t put my finger on it but just still don’t think it’s over.

Romantic Idiot I may be fella….Southampton is a very difficult task. I won’t be as clear headed as I am today, away with the boys to Benidorm from Thursday! !!!

    It’s not over…until it’s over.

    magsscar

Would it not be better for palace to beat norwich?

palace themselves are already 9 points ahead with an additional point due to a much better GD. I could understand if you were meaning it as in hope palace come down with us but you want norwich to beat the mackems therefore you meaning it as in hope we can survive.

If norwich beat palace then we’ve got to get a minimum of 3 wins without palace getting a single point.

IF Palace and sunderland both beat norwich then we might get that miricle and survive with victory against palace and swansea at home along side villa away and norwich will only really get an easy chance of win against watford after that

  • 61 Bri // Apr 2, 2016 at 7:03 PM

    Manx
I just hope Rafa can weave some magic but i doubt it.

  • 62 magscar // Apr 2, 2016 at 7:07 PM

    Toonking

You may be right. Just hoping that Palace are this season’s team in freefall ( that point today might be crucial though) and it becomes between us, Mackems and Palace with us to play Palace still at home. I think Norwich are on a run but as others have pointed out they may only get another 4 points. They may be twists to come.

I am thinking Benitez’ way of simply taking a game at a time may be better for my sanity as recent weeks of guessing future results just isn’t working.

Whilst it is mathematically possible to escape I will hope but our last 2 games against relegation opposition hasn’t given me much confidence. Ironically the Leicester game in which no one was giving us a chance was our best performance of the 3 under Benitez but he hasn’t been able to build on it. He doesn’t seem to be able to cure the naivety of our defenders who are regularly drawn into making silly challenges giving away freekicks which we can’t defend. Norwich continually looked to get silly fouls and succeeded most of the time a ploy that we are incapable of reproducing.

  • 63 manxpie // Apr 2, 2016 at 7:08 PM

Bad/inept management for at least 5 years. Having knackers like Owl Heed, Penfold, King Percy, Wally running the show – has led to the inevitable decline.
We’ve made excuse after excuse -bad ref, should have had a pen, unlucky, so and so was injured – blah blah blah.
As they say the table does not lie.
Those knackers have through their ineptitude engineered this whole mess -and have been disgracefully arrogant to boot -not recognising their own uselessness.
    A complete and utter shambles.

  • 70 Sawbuck // Apr 2, 2016 at 7:16 PM

I never did decipher Shep’s reason for selling. He was laid up in hospital with a fever.. therefore he just had to sell..

  • 71 Obafan // Apr 2, 2016 at 7:17 PM

Darlow: kept us in the game

Janmaat: overrated and overrates himself. Gives away stupid faults. Glad to see him gone.
Mbemba: nothing left of his defensive strengths. No confidenca at all.
Saylor: how on Earth is he near a first EPL team? Oh wait we are not of that standard. The biggest clown I have ever seen on a pitch. Never liked the guy.
Anita: played a lot as a LB at Ajax and did OK. Today he was a total waste of space. Should have been subbed after half an hour.

Townsend: tries a lot but makes often the wrong choice. But at least he tried something.
Shelvey: I expected a lot more from him not only today. Think he might play better more in an attacking role.
Tiote: why was he playing? Where was Saivet? He played a decent half at Everton and never got another chance. Very strange.
Sissoko: the most annoying player I know. Does not put an effort in and I don’t understand the fact he still is in the team. On another hand he should have started as LB.

Wijnaldum: it was an away game => enough said.
Cissé: how was he picked in front of Mitro I do not know at all. Cannot pass nor control the easiest balls. His killer instinct is gone and he cannot hold up play.

Mitro: thank you for the passion. Sadly you are all alone…
Perez: too light weight. Loses the ball constantly. De Jong should have come on (even started IMO)

Benitez: a good coach with a lot of tactical quality. He came in too late to rescue the team and he is not at fault at all. But for me he made 2 or 3 bad choices today.

    Carr: responsible for ths sh*t.
Charnley: waited too long to sack the idiot who was our manager.
Ashley: gave the responsibility to the wrong people. But it is his own fault cause he is too stubborn to change things.

    Conclusion: CHAMPIONSHIP here we come.

  • 76 Tsunki // Apr 2, 2016 at 7:26 PM

Whole it’s all over bar the calculators and pencils with rubbers on the end, I think it’s not defeatist but realistic and philosophical to approach this from a resigned fate viewpoint. Perhaps the higher powers will be motivated to form some concrete Plan A to ensure we do well in the next Division. Ashley needs to be taking advice right now on what board and scouting setup he needs for the next campaign if he’s going to keep Billy Bunter and Father Time on then I foresee many seasons rubbing shoulders with championship hoovers or worse.

I questioned the sanity at the start of the season as to not strengthening the defence .

.If the fans can see it why could the so called hierarchy and Manager not see it ,,it was glaringly obvious.

Steve McClaren stayed on selfishly, putting himself and money,, in the form of a pay off first, by not resigning and with the Knowledge that he had lost the players early doors

  • 79 manxpie // Apr 2, 2016 at 7:28 PM

put it this way right now i’d rather mid table with shite football than where we are now
but hey we have a world class manager picking the same shite players that the ultra x 1000 shit board has produced!
    season after season
but yeah its all mclarens fault as it was carvers and pardews can you see a path there or not?

  • 81 The next Mike Williamson // Apr 2, 2016 at 7:30 PM

If only the board listened to the fans. We’d have sacked pardew earlier and replaced him with a modern manager like tuchel. We’d never have given carver a try. We’d have never ever given mcclaren a job. wed have never promoted a secretary to run the club And if we had, we’d have sacked all of them before it was too late. If I picked ten fans at random id expect them all to have chosen better than carver and mcclaren. Charnley is the biggest failure since Joe kinnear. he has to be sacked. he even looks like he knows only the basics about football.

  • 82 NewcastleMole // Apr 2, 2016 at 7:31 PM

    Just examined the Norwich goals.

    1st – Tiote & Mbemba calamity
Mbemba misjudges flight of ball and has jumped and landed before Klose leaps.
Tiote who is inbetween Klose and the goal doesnt jump at all and ends up giving Klose a free head at goal.
Special Mentions: Steven Taylor, who else! With both his arms around Mbokani. Idiot!. Darlow no attempt to dive for ball.

2nd Janmaat, Taylor, Mitrovic & Mbemba Special
We have a good line at first but Janmaat is beaten far too easily and allows Mbokani inside, Criminal!. Next Steven Taylor is sucked out of position by another norwich player. The goal is now gaping, Mitrovic (our striker) is now closest defender to stop shot instead he turns his back. Coward (on closer inspection he’s actually turning his back while BOTH his hands are on his todger i kid you not. What? Want proof? ok here it is http://uploadpie.com/ty4OI Mbemba though, WALKING! along 6 yard line infront of keeper doesnt close down shot and watches the ball all the way into the net. Shocking.
Honorable Mentions: Townsend casually jogging back & Cisse walking back.

3rd or should that be 93rd!
I dont even walk to talk about this one the ball comes in and we dont even manage to get a foot on it after sloppy play from norwich. Janmaat again, no attempt to challenge the inital header then puts in no effort to close down or block shot. Between Taylor, Shelvey and Janmaat they should of done better. Just a soft scrappy goal to concede so late.

I don’t blame Darlow, Mitrovic or Shelvey too much. Darlow was thrown in at deep end and made some crucial saves.

    New Manager, Same problems exist.

Wijnaldum is a passenger. Janmaat doesnt want to be here, Taylor is a liability, Cisse doesnt offer enough, Shelvey is struggling in the deeper role and doesnt have players ahead of him good enough to make the require runs, Townsend really good crosser but without Mitrovic to target early on he struggled, Sissoko also thinking about his summer move.

Ive accepted were down now simply because the team we have dont play as a team. Individually theyre decent on paper but together they dont work and the squad is heavily unbalanced. Injuries dont help either but even with a fully fit squad we’d likely be in and around the dropzone.

  • 83 Online Guy // Apr 2, 2016 at 7:31 PM

As one of the eternal optimists on here I am still clinging to hope – who saw Norwich’s last 3 results coming ( alright apart from against us). Having said that I have no argument with the realists – for you the pain is over for this season 🙂

As to next if we go down the million dollar question is do we want to and can we persuade Benitez that a project isn’t just for 12 games? With him and keeping the right players with sensible buying we have a good chance of a quick return. Without retaining him – well it may mean Ashley sticks with those he knows and we won’t be bouncing back anytime soon. Alternatively has he finally learnt his lesson and goes for an overhaul of the Board – who knows?

Magscar time tells us Ashley has no capacity to learn, unfortunately. I can see him cutting his losses and carving us up to get what personal investment he can clawed back. Either that or he rejigs his model to make us a perennial championship mid table club and we forget ahead with even lower league standard Manager and players and strip back the outgoings to maximise profits at a lower level. Alex Neil’s first port of call was clearly a defence that has, at the time of writing, shipped 54 goals in 31 Premier League fixtures this season. Compared to Newcastle, who spent January failing to address their lacklustre backline, Neil’s decision to invest in the defence could prove to be the defining factor in the business end of the campaign, particularly with Sunderland doing similar with the captures of Lamine Kone and Jan Kirchhoff.

Sissoko has turned out to be a horse. Athletic and powerful but no brain. Wijnaldum is a lazy defeatist who switches off at the hint of things not working. Townsend could make a difference but he’s working with nuggets, Shelvey the same but starts going haywire when nothing works for him. Mitrovic is a disconnected brat with passion but no connection, can’t look anyone in the eye, stands and protests when he gets shrugged off instead of carrying on to get the ball back. Janmaat likes the idea of being a gut busting wing back but does both jobs half-baked.

The rest are all quite simply substandard and unskilled at this level, old, hampered by past injuries, or just also ran once-prospects.

  • 112 magscar // Apr 2, 2016 at 8:00 PM

    Tsunki@90

Surely Benitez is capable of sussing out those who aren’t trying and if so wouldn’t he drop them possibly from squad if he thought their negativity would rub off on others.

I was of the opinion months ago that one of Sissoko or Gini had to be left out of away games and nothing under Benitez has changed my view – except perhaps drop both!

De Jong must be not fit if he can’t get a game even from the bench.

I am still unsure whether or not some players are playing their own game or following instructions. Too many of them are still not fulfilling their potential and we simply don’t look a team especially in first halves of last 2 games.

We are reaching the stage (if not already) where we are going to have to stop thinking tactically for each game and simply go for goals choosing not the best 11 but round pegs in round holes. Not complaining about Benitez but getting desperate as each game passes us without the necessary result.

We’re quite simply a failed club under Ashley. Nine seasons of pure hell. He hasn’t learned a thing. We barely escaped last season but he kept the same fools in charge. We should have sacked Charnley and Carr at the very least. With decent executives in we would never have been in this position given the money we had to spend (80 M). It’s quite literally impossible to believe that any football club could screw things up this badly given that type of money.

  • 116 U.S Magpie // Apr 2, 2016 at 8:05 PM

Well Fellow Tooners, we are royally phucked and not just phucked, proper phucked Tommy. This of course is something that could have been fixed back in December or after the lets see where we are after 13 games speech. How is it that the fans know what we need and the fans know what we don’t need but the board have no phucking idea. Mike yes you gave money for the club to purchase players and a man of your word this season, the issue is, you left an idiot in charge surrounded by more idiots. Watching the game today we look so much better playing two up front and we can score goals, but then we need our defense to stop goals we come up shorter than every team apart from Villa. Dutch international getting turned like a school boys and Taylor turning his back on the ball ( what a phucking whimp ). In a relegation fight Taylor you go into everything like your life depends on it and not worry if the ball hits you in the face. I say we are down for sure, only the biggest miracle in sports history will save us from relegation. And honestly I don’t think we have any left in the bag, but if Sir Bobby is looking down on St James park and has any influence over getting a miracle for the club then Sir Bobby please do your best. Yes Toon fans, I am asking for someone that’s dead to help our club, he probably will have more influence on future proceeding’s. Rest in peace Sir Booby.

Magscar, it must have been over a year ago that I put forward that the big failing of our scouting is that we were assembling what looked like a really useful squad BUT they strangely didn’t have complementary skills , vision or playing styles – a team of square pegs. it’s only got worse, this is the most mismatched, disparate side I’ve seen anywhere for a very long time.

I predicted a 3-2 scoreline, just hoped it would be the other way around. Did not see the game but I wonder if Norwich were there for the taking if we could have put in a decent performance. Glancing at the comments on hear I get the impression that some players either did not turn up, faded or lacked the ability to do it all on their own.

We are where we deserve to be, due to poor Board level decision making ever since MA came in and players not having the proper motivation. The quality of the coaching can no longer be in doubt, so it can only be that the players are deliberately not performing to their best and not performing according to instruction. Taylor and Coloccini will have the dubious accolade of being relegated twice in the same team.

  • 125 Tsunki // Apr 2, 2016 at 8:18 PM

One huge lesson that Billy B and Father Time did not learn was not to gamble with squad depth. We were running an entire season with a second choice keeper. Half a season with a second choice lb, then a 3rd, then anyone. All season without a first choice proper DM. All season with 2nd and 3rd choice strike partners. Why would that work?

  • 126 Lindisfarne // Apr 2, 2016 at 8:19 PM

    magscar @112

Agree with all you say there, I hoped that Benitez would get them into some kind of shape but it is the same old failings that prevent us from picking up points. Whilst he did mention that he would give every player an opportunity, IMO to enable an as yet unapparent creative spark to appear, he has been limited to covering for injuries. Producing a well balanced side is now out of the question, we need to ‘score more than them’ and hope the defence gain motivation from going ahead in matches (when was the last time that happened?).

  • 127 GeordieTwo // Apr 2, 2016 at 8:20 PM

It’s been said a thousand times on here and on every other blog Sawbuck. People begging Ashley to hire decent people to run the club. He either can’t admit he can’t run a club properly or he just doesn’t care. I believe he does care because of the money involved, but he just couldn’t overcome his own incompetence. I don’t think its that he’s incompetent, he just pivots every situation to the next marketing opportunity for his brands. • 137 21st Century Schizoid Man // Apr 2, 2016 at 8:29 PM

Even Benitez can’t make a silk purse out of a pig’s ear, and our defence is probably mid table Championship level. We’ve all been banging on about sorting it out – some of us on here for years. I’d hoped against hope that we’d be the ones getting the 90+3 goal today. Still trying to come to terms with the idea of another average manager coming to coach us in the Championship and a shipload of dross staying and the decent guys leaving.

For me, the managerial candidates should be:
Brendan Rodgers (if he’d come into the championship)
    Ian Cathro
    Gary Monk

Nigel Pearson is a dickhead so wouldn’t really want him. We need a long term visionary, young and modern.

    Signings we could make?
For starters we need more leaders in the team that’s why I’d go for Tommy Elphick from Bournemouth as he’s 3rd choice there now, he was their captain when they got promoted and was pretty solid.

I’d replace janmaat with Iorfa from wolves who’s fast and tall. We’d need a decent left back or maybe one of the top 4 Premier league clubs youngsters on loan
A decent partner for Shelvey, essentially a holding player, always rated George Thorne from Derby. Perhaps for a winger/attacking midfielder maybe Moses although I think he’ll stay in the prem, Matt Phillips from QPR or Marc Pugh who I think is fairly underrated and has championship experience. Then strikers hopefully we’ll have Arma and Mitro up front but as another option then maybe someone like Shane Long if he’s available but think he’ll stay in the prem if anything

  • 150 roblee7 // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:02 PM

gorgonzola… Ben Arfa… makes me want to cry. our only true talent we’ve had in recent years. we dont have one player even close to his ability. nothing even near…

  • 151 roblee7 // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:05 PM

seriously, what an absolute disgrace what the club did with Ben Arfa man…aghhh!! f**kwits!!!!

  • 152 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:06 PM

    roblee…

well of coarse… love how 0 clue numbsculls called for his head.

I am sure they are enjoying de Jong and the new crew. The clud deserves nothing but relegation and complete rot thanks to Ashley’s crew.

Only an IDIOT would sit around as his has so far and let the club eat itself to the ground.

Ben Arfa is the last player we will have with this talent and skill to grace SJP in a very very very very very very very long time if ever.

  • 153 roblee7 // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:11 PM

gorgonzola…100% agree. what other player do we have or have had that could change a game with one sublime piece of skill or run? in my life time, Beardsley, Ginola and Gazza are the only ones I can think of. Laurent Robert would be close too on his day

  • 154 roblee7 // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:13 PM

i actually had high hopes for Cabella. dont think i was alone though

  • 155 Harley // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:21 PM

I know this has been said so many times today. I just can’t understand why he dropped mitrovic and lascelles, especially mitrovic.
I’m not saying this afterwards just because we lost and Cisse was totally ineffective. I was puzzled when I saw the line up.
I don’t see what either player had possibly done wrong to lose their place. Lascelles has probably been our best defender and mitrovic had just made the headlines scoring the all important equaliser against the enemy.
Crazy decision! Probably the decision that gets us relegated.
Sunderland may laugh but it looks like they’ll be joining us.
    Sickening. I’m totally gutted tonight.

  • 156 LGFUAD21 // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:25 PM

    Calamitous display today.

We only score because teams sit off us.

Like others. Can’t understand the dropping of mitro. Or lascelle. 2 players that look like they give a number 2 about this club.

Darlow looked just as my Forrest supporting dad said he did in his last season. Shaky and full of mistakes. Made some good saves but none looked comfortable. They all looked a bit fluky.

  • 157 roblee7 // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:30 PM

    Harley..
agreed I was a bit baffled too. if McLaren had made those changes there’d be hell on. The big problem is the defence and has been for years. When Taylor and Colo are still playing its a total joke really. Would prefer our back four to be Simpson, Santon, M’biwa and bloody Fitz Hall!!!

  • 158 davetoon // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:30 PM

The thing that worries me the most is Ashleys comment about the bank account being empty. That he allowed Charnley and Carr to spend all the money and there would be no more made available

  • 159 roblee7 // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:34 PM

davetoon…yeah its way too much trust. like giving your wife the credit card to go shopping for the day

  • 160 Toon Tang // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:40 PM

Harley, you’re right about scumlun. If we go I hope to footy god that them bastards come with us. Or at the very least Pards haha. I can’t see that one happening now though.

I’ll be even more gutted if it’s Norwich that we go with.

And I know all this sounds very defeatist but I’m completely resigned to the ‘not quite fact’ we are gonna be playing championship footy next season.

Just can’t see any other way out of it now baring a miracle of rick waller proportions.

  • 161 davetoon // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:42 PM

Maybe well see another ‘interest free’ loan

  • 162 lochinvar // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:48 PM

Why on earth do our midfielders not get back to stand across the edge of the penalty box to prevent attackers cutting back the ball to players running onto striking the ball with venom – we lost goals like that today and Defoe the other week.
Isn’t on of the basic that coaches teach the kids and Sunday League players – get bodies behind the ball and face onto the attacker in those situations not drift into the space after they’ve taken a shot or turn sideways when then do. Gutless and clueless .

  • 163 Toon Tang // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:51 PM

Gonna catch the first 4 goals of the match on motd but I’m switching off after the pen. Can’t take watching them bag in the 94th, basically relegating us.

Like watching a decrepit family member take thier last breath on thier death bed.

    Merciless viewing eh.

  • 164 stuart no9 // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:52 PM

Gutted distraught , heart broken all these in one is how i feel for the first time in years . this one point we dropped at the death today was probably the most important point in years, for me it was anyway ,
For the first time since raffa arrived a few weeks ago i got the feeling that relagation is a real possiblity now .
Ok . it always looked on , but it hit home this afternoon that could be it., however , there is still 21 points to play for . we are not down yet- ok i wouldnt put my house on staying up but 21 plus 25= 46 thats what we could have come may and that is what we must aim for .We are not down . , we are down come the last game of the season when we need 4 points to reach 4th bottom thats when ill concede defeat and admit we are down .its still alive lads ,

  • 165 lochinvar // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:59 PM

Can’t help hoping that at the Private Club where the Premier League Franchise Owners meet that the Results Committee have planned it so that the last day sees us needing to beat Spurs to stay up and deny them the title which otherwise goes to Leicester.
Maybe Ashley forgot to pay his subscription and that’s why we’re not allowed to win…yet. If he now renews his subscription then maybe we have a chance – or did Charley forget to post the Direct Debit.
    Tragic.

  • 166 toon kk // Apr 2, 2016 at 9:59 PM

Tbf this season has been coming for years.
    We’ve been on borrowed time.
We really lack quality in key areas, Rafa can’t change that. Our better player’s can’t play to there potential because of their team mates and fans may be optimistic about our flops but its time people got real and accepted they’ve been paying to watch dross for a long time and suddenly a new manager coming in has helped but we still have the same problem players.
We’ve got a average mid table championship side and No more. Believe it.

  • 167 Jail for Ashley // Apr 2, 2016 at 10:02 PM

Well I don’t think anyone has been more positive than me since Rafa arrived but I’m afraid it’s all over after today. Not just the six points we are trailing but that was our second must win game that we have failed to do so. Basically if we can’t beat Norwich who can we beat out of the remaining games. The fat fcuker can sit and smugly kid himself that he had nothing to do with the mess we’re in but it is all him and his cronies doing, needlessly and shamelessly ran us in to ground!!!

I try not to take all this misery to heart but it does effect one . its deep in my psych , in the blood so to speak ,

I was overjoyed when Mitrovic put the pen away ..and then gutted to the F@king bone when the Budgerigars /canarys scored the winner ..

Oh To be a Newcastle United fan ,,woe is me,

I can see Norwich winning only one more game they were so lucky away at west brom..and today against uz..so can we catch the Mackems ?

  • 171 Mister Tuff // Apr 2, 2016 at 10:10 PM

Manx – previous reply – I do not blame the managers in the first instance – they were just applying for jobs. It is the knackers who appointed them who are the real culprits – trying to do stuff on the cheap.
the last couple of managers have proved to be very poor – Percy and Wally – and deserve being criticised.

What might have been. – If they had got a good manager 5 years ago we would not be in this trouble. Could have possibly signed Aubameyang – now a super star. Benny might have still been here – he could have won us at least a couple of games no doubt about that.

Classic example of how not to run a football club.

hes managed all these super clubs – been there got the t shirt but this is a massive chance for him to wake this giant of a club up. he can do it, but i feel we need to put an arm around and tell him – we need him

  • 205 NoahJ // Apr 2, 2016 at 11:01 PM

Ten (off the top of my head) examples of mismanagement this season:

    1. They started the season by releasing two experienced heads in Jonas (whom was handled in an outrageous way anyway, particularly as he had just saved us weeks previously) and Ryan Taylor

    2. They hired a manager that no Newcastle Utd fan wanted, had previously rejected us twice, had failed at two clubs in the division below us (not to mention with the Golden generation of England), and who was overall grossly out of his depth

    3. They failed to fire McLaren at three obvious and necessary opportunities: the 6-1 defeat to Man City; the 5-1 defeat to Crystal Palace; and the 5-1 defeat to Chelsea

    4. They have entrusted all transfer activity to Graham Carr, the man responsible for hiring Thauvin, Riviere, Marveaux, Amalfitano and Gouffran

    5. This policy was further undermined when signings were made even when the manager did not like the player- the Thauvin fiasco was completely ridiculous

    6. They entrusted the running of the club to Lee Charnley, a man who has no previous experience, and otherwise no knowledge of football

    7. They decided a defence that included two players that got us relegated (Taylor and Coloccini), mike Williamson, and no recognised back-up right back, was good enough to rely on for the entire season

    8. When a completely obvious frailty was persistently identified in the team (defender and proven goalscorer), they responded to this by signing three midfielders (and an unproven goalscorer) in January

    9. They paid a hefty loan fee to bring Doumbia to the club, yet refuse to play him (have they not learnt from the Ferrerya debacle?)

    10. Mike Ashley recently came out in the press saying he wanted to sell the club and that there was “no money left”, at a time where fans have already lost hope; great PR right there

If these things happen we could still survive:

    1. Crystal Palace beat Norwich next week to not only end their winless run but erase any of their own relegation concerns.

    2. Sunderland beat Norwich.

    2. We win our next 2 games against Southampton & Swansea. (This will make us level on points with Norwich ahead on GD, assuming we don’t catch up).

    3. Lastly, I then think the deciding games will be this:
Norwich vs Arsenal & Man Utd
Newcastle vs Man City & Liverpool

We need to pick 1 pt from those 2 games & hope Norwich lose both. Then fate will be in our own hands & voila.

I’m afraid that’s one foot out the door now. It’s not jut that in the last two games we’ve lost points it’s that we’ve allowed the teams around us to pick up points. Losing to Leicester was no big deal, but losing to Norwich not only deprives us of three points but gives three points to them. That and a point to Sunderland means we have no more opportunities to take points off the teams around us, except villa who are dead anyway and Palace who will probably have picked up the win they need to stay safe by then.

While still mathematically possible, the chances are so improbable no one sane would take them.

This summer is the most important in the last 20 years. Who we have as a manager and the players we keep or get rid of are vital to what happens next.

I thought that penalty handed us our little lifeline but to go and ruin that as well just sums it all up.

Not a good day for our football.

Lee Charnley is in charge of recruitment, spent 80 million and the team is no better than last year! Mike comes out and says the bank is empty!!! what does Rafa think of that statement? its hardly a motivator to stay if we go down, oh 1/8 by the way, Lee Charnley should go no question, Mclaren should have been gone a good half dozen games before he did..

Today for most of that game Wiji Sissoko Townsend should be ashamed of themselves, and i will mention even though he put a decent shift in today Janmatt will be the first looking for a way out, every game is a cup final “yet again” this club is cursed, we need a shamen in and fast!!!!!!

  • 236 Munster Mag // Apr 3, 2016 at 12:48 AM

Of course the club is a shambles but some of us were shouted down two years ago for saying carr was overrated. Not ONE journalist was saying this back then when it was clear as day. Now we can start to say that rafa has had very little effect and he picked a poor selection today and they were under motivated in the first half. Sunderland was our chance and we blew it. Today was our second chance and we blew it. Rafa has had zero effect, despite the deluded fans and media saying otherwise. Get pearson to agree to join when rafa leaves in a few weeks. Wish it was different but take the rafa glasses off and so little has changed carr take a bow. I hope Mondial paid you well.

    munster
you can back further then sunderland,…drawing with villa, losing at home to everton, bournemouth and watford 3 times…signs have been there all season tbh…its not good and i doubt we will pull any performances out better then we’ve already shown…its not looking good.

  • 238 NUFCPaul // Apr 3, 2016 at 1:18 AM

Munster Mag – Rafa’s a good manager, his record proves that, but he’s not a miracle worker. When you’ve got a bunch of spineless cowards who are already planning which club they’re jumping ship to in the summer what can he do?

Maybe Nigel Pearson combined with some bruisers who show a bit of heart and spirit for the shirt next season might be what’s needed. I’m certainly not one of those supporters who WANT us to go down, but it’s looking pretty much like a certainty now. Start planning for it NOW Penfold.

    You won’t though, will you?

  • 239 NUFCPaul // Apr 3, 2016 at 1:32 AM

Didn’t realise it was the anniversary of the Bowyer/Dyer fight as seen on tonight’s MOTD. Funny when they asked Shearer what he said to them and he said ‘I told him he was on fire, not punch Dyer!’

There’s a few in our team at the minute who could use a thick ear or a bloody nose to wake them up on the pitch.

  • 240 NUFCPaul // Apr 3, 2016 at 1:47 AM

I’ll never forget how those Villa supporters mocked us when we went down and I’ve been waiting for them to get relegated. It’s bloody typical that it’s looking like we’ll be going down with them. I’ll still laugh when the Brummie bastards are mathematically down though.

  • 241 ilovetoon8788 // Apr 3, 2016 at 1:51 AM

We look no better under rafa because it’s too late. Our players are beyond saving. We have an unbalanced squad due to very poor recruitment. Priority was placed on resale value instead of what we actually needed.

We are reaping what Carr and Charnley sowed.

  • 242 NUFCPaul // Apr 3, 2016 at 1:52 AM

So what has Rafa learned from today’s game?

    Mitrovich needs to start.

Sissoko plays left back ahead of Anita even if Colback comes back into the team? Never thought I’d be saying that

Townsend needs to whip more balls into the box and we need someone on the opposite flank who can do the same. Peppering the opposition box with crosses seems to be the way to go.

Rafa doesn’t like people referring to Taylor as Saylor. He just told me that on the phone.

  • 243 SPRINGY // Apr 3, 2016 at 2:05 AM

play the best players we have till relegation is proven then play some youngins and find out who stayin who’s goin…try and prepare as best we can while theres games left to assess everything….but not until its done and dusted.

  • 244 U.S Magpie // Apr 3, 2016 at 2:07 AM

I would honestly play Mitro and Ginny up front with Ginny just playing of him, then sisko at left back put shelve and tiote in the middle with Andre and Aarons on the wings to whip those balls into the box we know both Ginny and Mitro can score with there heads. Didn’t think I would say this but hopefully Collo is back ahead of chicken shit turn your back taylor, with Mbe also CB, I guess Jama at right back. I DONT CARE WHO’S BACK, THEY DONT DESERVE A LOOK IN.

  • 245 terencelim // Apr 3, 2016 at 2:27 AM

I’d be happy with relegation even if there’s a slight chance that Ashley may sell.

Ashley ass lickers take a taxi with him please.

  • 246 toonaus // Apr 3, 2016 at 2:30 AM

Fu kn hell man this team is so shit, frustrating, lazy, doesn’t try no one seems to care at all apart from mitro at the moment who looks to be taking thing seriously and improving under our new coach watching the game i saw rafa barking instructions to players who didn’t listen to him and i saw his frustration and a roll of the eyes like seriously your not listening you pinhead. Honestly i can not see a win in any of the last remaining games we might as well field the reserves team for the games left or forfeit and sell the team now. This aint no game teams are seriously more competitive now and wont feel sorry for you or go oh Newcastle are a team with great petagree we must let them stay up we’ll go down for you instead. I just dont understand how you could be proud to play in the black and white at the moment it like they are using kits as toilet paper at Newcastle.
