Players Who Can Help Us Get Promoted Next Season

6:43 pm, Wednesday, April 6th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 94 Comments

Yes, we know there’s still a chance we can avoid relegation, although it’s a slim chance it is still very possible.

And we hope that Rafa Benitez – that workaholic who seems to be working every single day to perform that particular miracle – can do it, if anybody can.

But given the very likely scenario this season that we will be relegated, then who do we have who can help us get promoted straight back to the Premier League?

Four players we signed this season will be excellent players we can use next season – Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba, Jonjo Shelvey and  Andros Townsend.

Aleksandar Mitrovic – should be able to score lots of goals next season

Hopefully Henri Saivet can come into the side too, and we think he’s not playing at the moment simply because Rafa is using the more experienced players who have played in the Premier League before.

The players who will want to go will be at least Daryl Janmaat, Gini Wijnaldum and Moussa Sissoko and they should be sold and the money used to bring in new players who can help us ibn the Championship next season.

We will already be getting about £6M for Remy Cabella who will join Marseille.

Lots of players will leave – Steven Taylor, Sylvain Marveaux, Gabby Obertan, Emmanuel Riviere, Yoan Gouffran, Haris Vuckic and Sammy Ameobi at least – and we’re undecided as to whether we should keep Papiss Cisse and Cheick Tiote or let them go – what do you think?

As far as new players coming in – we will have striker Adam Armstrong back playing just one division above where he has been outstanding for Coventry City this season, so Adam can play a part – maybe alongside Mitrovic.

As for new players coming in we must bring in two full backs and a center-back – no ifs or buts about that – we didn’t do that over the last few seasons which is why our defense has been our big weakness and has basically been one of the big reasons for this relegation.

We need to change things and get Newcastle to become a good defensive side which we haven’t been for the last four seasons.

Hopefully Tim Krul will be fit and with Karl Darlow will be fighting for the number one slot in August until Rob Elliot comes back maybe in the October – November time frame.

So it looks like defenders are what we need and we should be fairly reasonable in other parts of the field – with one or two additions – but we cannot see Florian Thauvin being much use to us in the Championship.

Can you?

Graham Carr should be told to scout for players we can sign if we are relegated.

And the main thing we need to do is to appoint a new manager very early in the summer – maybe David Moyes or somebody of that caliber – none of this head coach nonsense – a real manager – before any players come in.

The new manager must have final say on all transfers – just like Rafa was promised.

We can no longer allow Graham Carr to bring in his favorite players while ignoring what the team really needs – it doesn’t work.

And we probably shouldn’t bother with any fancy tours in the summer – just arrange a few friendlies against a number of good sides – and let the new manager work extensively with the squad before the first game of the season.

If we can do that this summer we should have a decent chance of coming straight back up to the Premier League.

One season down below will not be too harmful for the club, but more than that will be.

What do you think?

his old man joined pards at palace
i dont think he will go there i think better clubs will br after him
also with pards being close to the sack woodman will prob leave when pards does so might be a bit of a risk joining palace

best club for him at the mo would prob be spurs they will want a replacment for loris soon

If the horse hasn’t bolted yet I hope it kicks Ashley in his fat kin face as it goes, and then the cart rolls over his space hopper head!

  • 5 WWSBRD // Apr 6, 2016 at 6:59 PM

A lot of those players should go regardless of the league we find ourselves in

  • 6 WWSBRD // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:01 PM

All the Dutch lads can leave, I’d like to keep Krul but that’s it really

  • 7 optimistic prime // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:03 PM

I’m just cheesed off, too little to late.

After his drivel we carried on the same as every other year despite what’s claimed.
Same targets for proffit before the good of the team, still selected by a scout, still managed by a incompetent fool.

I wanted to give Steeve a chance but it was obvious months ago he couldn’t do it, he should have gone after Chelsea!

Rafa Shelvey and Townsend were a break from the norm but to little to late!

I’m mighty pi55ed after the end of last season and people saying he’s spent blah blah blah. It’s a joke! The clubs been mismanaged from top to bottom, we’re a fkin circus and Ashley’s the clown the ringmaster and the elephant man!

I hope he gets genital warts in his mouth!

  • 8 Essex Geordie Bill // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:04 PM

Actually I can see at least 5 of that list not going regardless of whether they should or not.

As for a new manager, Moyes no thanks.

Eddie Howe perhaps or even promote Cathro. I would also go for Pearson.

Plenty of young brave managers out there.

  • 9 Jail for Ashley // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:13 PM

I know you’re probably speaking tongue in cheek but why on earth would Eddie Howe drop a division to leave a club where he is valued and respected. I think Cathro will be given the job as it worked before with Hoots and they’ll like the idea of saving money. Rafa probably cost the same as Pardews whole eight year deal. Cathro might not even want it.

  • 10 BeeGuy // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:15 PM

    Krul will leave. maybe Elliot.

I’d expect they would try to loan Mitro and Townsend.

  • 11 welshgeordie9 // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:15 PM

Why Eddie Howe, he’s only been in the premier league this season.

  • 12 welshgeordie9 // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:16 PM

Hey Jail, if you got a ticket for the swans match, fancy meeting up for a pint, i will pay.

  • 13 Jail for Ashley // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:16 PM

Considering the complete non entity we’ve been since avoiding relegation three years ago I think we’d have been better off gone. We might well be three years closer to the fat man selling up and we wouldn’t have been humped off the mackems six times in a row.

  • 14 welshgeordie9 // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:17 PM

I will buy the first round, you get the rest.

Eds listed players are part of the reasons why we’ve struggled for so long.

There needs to be some quality scouting come the end of the season for hard working quality championship players.

  • 21 9 // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:23 PM

Please don’t take this the wrong way: I’m not claiming our defence is wonderful, but it seems to be taken for granted we are where we are because of our defence. I strongly disagree. Look at the number of games we have lost 1-0, it’s criminal. We needed a centre forward who was proven to score goals in the Premier League, Cisse stopped doing that a long while ago, Mitro has failed so many times (good luck to him for the future, hope it has already started for him), we have an unfit pile of lard we wisely introduced in January but daresen’t let loose on the pitch as he’s so embarrassing: goals, goals, goals, that’s what we lack. Goals lacking all season . 1-0,1-0, 1-0, 1-0, it wears me out thinking about it.
    Just saying.

  • 22 welshgeordie9 // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:24 PM

So when you pour it on my head, what drink would that be, I’m guessing you are Buck’s Fizz or maybe a babycham kind of guy.

  • 25 Thump // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:33 PM

Hahaha as if any of those players would hang about for us in the Championship. Ever heard of a fire sale, Ed?

  • 26 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:36 PM

Yeah agree so many games we just limped over the line under Mclaren who would make changes to late and then we couldn’t score with the chances we made

On Mitrovic I don’t think its a coincidence that he has now scored 2 games in a row with headers he has always been capable of this but we hardly ever put in quality for him

  • 27 AncientC // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:36 PM

Ashley has said himself that he wants “value” when buying players.

No mention of structure, philosophy, integration… just straight up ‘bang for your buck’ when spending on players.

Where did it all go wrong?

  • 28 Jail for Ashley // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:38 PM

It was always a big ask to expect a 20 year old kid new to a league to be your main striker but he was and we are where we are partly because of it. We’ve lost 1-0 six times but have conceded three or more a whopping nine times.

  • 29 Jib // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:45 PM

The talent on display in Paris is unreal !
I hope the match lives up to expectations.

  • 30 Jail for Ashley // Apr 6, 2016 at 7:51 PM

I do too Jibberish, if it keeps you quiet for 90 minutes.

  • 31 lesh // Apr 6, 2016 at 8:01 PM

Graham Carr should not be told to scout players for the drop. He’s been doing that for the past couple of years. Who says we don’t plan!

Seriously though, Carr’s buys have in the main totally unsuitable and if anything, he should be encouraged to spend more time with his family (or so the phrase goes).

One would hope that Ashley’s got head-hunters hired to identify candidates for the role of MD to replace Charnley. The Club needs a full review of operations, driven by an MD who knows football as a business, someone who can rectify the damage caused by the incompetents who’ve got us on the threshold of relegation.

  • 32 lesh // Apr 6, 2016 at 8:06 PM

    Yes Jail

£500k for Willo – all for the sake of Charnley trying to do something for the accounts.

If anybody deserves to have his backside kicked out of SJP it’s Charnley.

  • 33 giimps // Apr 6, 2016 at 8:33 PM

Gotta say I hope Benitez explains to the morons “in charge” you need experienced players in all areas of the pitch and it is catastrophic to refuse players because they are over 27.
We could have had so many decent players in their right positions if it wasn’t for the remit…..not all Carrs fault but overpaying for players who we don’t need is criminal.
I wonder if he gets a cut of outgoing contracts as well as incoming ….if so hel probably retire soon anyway

  • 34 Jail for Ashley // Apr 6, 2016 at 8:39 PM

I’m sure Pardew and Mclaren told them that but Mikey laid the law and that’s what they were going to stick to.

  • 35 Novocastrian66 // Apr 6, 2016 at 8:42 PM

Today’s financial results show that Newcastle United are penny wise and pound foolish. Charnley’s statement the points are more important than pounds is something the supporters have been saying for years. It finally dawned on the “board’ but unfortunately too late.

  • 36 U.S Magpie // Apr 6, 2016 at 8:47 PM

So can we stay up, this week talk about Leicester City managed to do it, well there is a chance we can. Honestly though as we all feel, well not all, we are relegated plain and simple. So next season starting again in the Championship, can we bounce back the first time like we did last time, that’s a million dollar question if I have ever asked one. But now lets look at the biggest issue, Rafa leaving if this is in his contract. I think Rafa may have in his contract that it is void if we get relegated. Now that’s the smart thing to do, this leaves the door open to the powers that be to sit down with him and say, Rafa what do you need from us. He will then ask for that bonus again for when he gets us back into the prem and also ask the club to back him within that contract to do what he needs when he gets us back. Rafa is no stupid person and may feel that as he calls us the sleeping giant, he could build something powerful if he gets the whole season. He may stay if we relegated, yes I know tons of clubs out there may offer him the Prem but I don’t feel that is what he really needs or wants. Lets hope something in the water changes the players and turns them into Real Madrid over night, it would be amazing to see what Rafa can do in the Prem with us and his squad of players.

  • 37 Ketsbaia9 // Apr 6, 2016 at 9:11 PM

We aren’t relegated yet. If we beat Southampton, we have a good chance of beating the drop. Hopefully Leicester will do Sunderland and Norwich will draw and lose games.

  • 38 Tsunki // Apr 6, 2016 at 9:19 PM

    Bah. Humbug.

  • 39 Ketsbaia9 // Apr 6, 2016 at 9:24 PM

Don’t forget that we have a game in hand.We could draw 7 games and Norwich could lose their remaining 6.

  • 43 beermonkey // Apr 6, 2016 at 9:34 PM

  • 44 Ketsbaia9 // Apr 6, 2016 at 9:47 PM

It could happen though. If we beat Southampton we’ll be virtually safe. We have better players, but Norwich are a hard working team. That former Everton player is a good player due to his work ethic. Can’t believe Bastian Bassong’s on the bench though.

  • 45 GeordieinOhio // Apr 6, 2016 at 9:53 PM

    KETS “

  • 46 Ibizatoon // Apr 6, 2016 at 9:54 PM

    I’m with Kets.

We have 21 points to play for in our remaining seven matches. Don’t let the fact we got one from our last six games worry you.

  • 47 Belfast // Apr 6, 2016 at 9:54 PM

We’ll just be left with whoever we can’t get rid off basically.

That could prove tricky because all those that desperately wanted out the last time got out, probably a few who wanted out that stayed but didn’t kick up a fuss because Nolan, Barton and the likes laid down the law.

This time the troublemakers that are left will probably do as they please and be a right royal pain in the arse.

  • 48 GeordieinOhio // Apr 6, 2016 at 9:54 PM

KETS “virtually safe”? are u kidding you do know you only get 3 points for a win right?

None – committed players not needed for the Saints match.
    Thank You.

  • 54 SPRINGY // Apr 6, 2016 at 10:41 PM

i think the only way charnley leaves is if he quits, ashley wont sack the one bloke who takes the brunt of the grief directed towards him… for winning 4-5 of our last 7 games….the next 2 matches will tell all, most dont expect a win at southampton, hoping for something, but not expecting it,so anything is a bonus if we manage it….but swansea at home is the cruncher, that will tell all of us if they are willing to raise there game….if they can.

  • 55 SPRINGY // Apr 6, 2016 at 10:54 PM

keep thinking theres a twist coming involving the top and bottom of the league, got a shitty feeling that sunderland against leicester could be that twist,it’ll be just our luck they get a win when most expect leicester to get the points.

  • 56 beermonkey // Apr 6, 2016 at 10:57 PM

i think with the exception of city and prb place
all the teams we play will have nowt to play for
i think our only hope is they have there flip flops on
not sure if we can do it but i really hope we do

  • 57 geordie157 // Apr 6, 2016 at 10:59 PM

My side for the opening day of the championship.

    Mbabu, Mbemba, Lascelles, Robertson
    Townsend, Shelvey, Cook, Thauvin
    Mitrovic, Perez

Woodman, Gunter, Dummett, Saivet, McCleary, Aarons, Armstrong

Well something like that, think build a side around the key five players of mitrovic, Perez, mbemba, shelvey and Townsend.

  • 58 SPRINGY // Apr 6, 2016 at 10:59 PM

i think even if the opposition were wearing flip flops on the pitch we may struggle to win!lol

  • 59 JAMSHA // Apr 6, 2016 at 11:00 PM

why ppl think perez will leave? his gona stay, he wont leave us to sit on the bench thats for sure only time he may leave is once his calld up for the sr national team

perez seems to like it up here and talks with a bit of loyalty,if any of them are to stay, he is the one i think might do that…nothing is certain but thats the sense i get from him.

  • 63 WWSBRD // Apr 6, 2016 at 11:06 PM

That’s pretty upsetting but ur not wrong barring our 5th place season we have added next to nothing to the league

With my neutral hat on I can’t see a reason to say why we shouldn’t be relegated this season, us Sunderland and Villa are the worst teams in the league. The club deserves to go down but the fans don’t

Still one good thing it proves Ashley’s idea of running a club is an utter disaster so we’ve saved a great many clubs in the future…least there’s that

If we do go down and that’s not a big if at all then expect some of the younger lads to be moved on. Anyone who thinks Perez will be loyal needs to have there head checked.

He will go especially if someone bids around 10m / 15m….most likely spurs, yes he will be bench warming but will get games in the cup like Kane did last season, he will know if he impresses Poch he’ll become a regular. Why would anyone want to stay here is the question I’d be asking!!

Nice to see mitro lining up for quite a few, big talent within European football, let’s not forget roma and Porto I believe liked the lad so fat chance he’s staying…..someone will take him, gini will go as well. Can’t see SDJ sticking around for Championship football, off he goes to Holland, the list will be endless. The 2 youngsters upfront are off no doubt about it.

Expect gouffran, riviere and Armstrong in the starting xi

  • 66 SPRINGY // Apr 6, 2016 at 11:28 PM

    our toon
it was just my opinion of how perez talks compared to other players, he seems to be more loyal then other players, thats why i said he might, out of any of them… may stop, but there is a lot of different factors that can change that at the end of the season…i hope he stops if we go down..but not expecting it.

  • 67 Our Toon // Apr 6, 2016 at 11:29 PM

If palace beat Norwich and the mackems hopefully hold them to a draw then I can’t see Norwich picking up any further points from the remaining games they have left. Big if but that’s what I’m hoping for.

Mackems I can see them getting an additional 4 / 5 points including the draw against Norwich (hopefully)

Leaves us with 3 hopeful wins against palace, Swansea and villa away…..which might be enough, all ifs and buts…..that’s our only hope!!

  • 68 SPRINGY // Apr 6, 2016 at 11:31 PM

whereas sissoko has came across as if he never emptied his suit case…as for SDJ,i think he might stop if hes going to be played, maybe even made captain, but no doubt there will be offers from holland, so the odds are that he will probably end up back there.

  • 69 Ketsbaia9 // Apr 6, 2016 at 11:33 PM

We shouldn’t be making negative remarks like this. Give it 2 games yet. If we win on sat and Sunderland and Norwich lose or draw, then we’d be in with a great chance. I believe that we can beat Man City and get a result at Anfield. Benitez will be attacking against City. If we stay up, we could be going for the Champions league next season.

  • 70 Our Toon // Apr 6, 2016 at 11:33 PM

I wouldn’t read to much into what a player says or does, wasn’t long ago old Jackie colback was telling our fans to shut up when he scored for the scum, players will try to say the right things but ultimately they have no affinity to the club, Perez sole intention will be to play at the highest level. I know what you mean in terms of the way he comes across and in all honesty I don’t think he’s kicked on for us this year which is a huge disappointment but why would he reject a move to better himself and stay at a club that in all reality mean nothing to him other than they pay his wages.

    Same for most player

  • 71 SPRINGY // Apr 6, 2016 at 11:34 PM

    our toon
we need to be in a position if that happens we can take advantage…swansea is a must or 3 points, southampton and city are bonus if we manage to get anyhting.

  • 72 Our Toon // Apr 6, 2016 at 11:39 PM

At least sissoko doesn’t BS around, it’s been known for a while he wants off and fair play to him or anyone else that’s wants to leave our club. It’s rotten to the core under this regime so why would you want to stay?

SDJ is still youngish, if he wants to kick start his career the championship is not the place. Good value for money for the likes of psv and ajax as they’ll be selling this summer again. I’d rather a player come out and be honest about wanting to leave rather than saying I love it up here and would want to stay, especially considering privately they want to jump ship.

Bacuna got a lot of stick from villa fans at the weekend because he said he wanted CL football, they booed him. Why the hell would he want to stay at that club. These players can get CL in places like Italy or Russia etc, maybe even in France or Holland!!

  • 73 Ketsbaia9 // Apr 6, 2016 at 11:41 PM

We always get hammered by Soton. It’s about time we beat them. I think Coloccini and Lascelles would be our best partnership for the next few games. Keep Anita at left back and bring De Jong in instead of Wijnaldum. De Jong can create and get goals. That’s what we need.

  • 74 SPRINGY // Apr 6, 2016 at 11:42 PM

city have’nt exactly been consistently good lately…and we are at home, so hopefully they are already thinking of there jollys and we can put in a performance….like i said before hope.

Ketsy has apparently been enjoying the magic mushrooms again. If we stay up we’ll be competing for Champions League next season???? You are in this universe right Ketsy? The one where we are 19th and have won 6 games of 31 played?

If we stay up we will not be competing for Champions League. Hair will not sprout on Shearer’s bean and dragons will not fly over St. James park in formation.

Hold on lads. Is it possible we can beat Southampton? I know we’re not really incredibly good away from home but still. We need an early goal and then to keep pressing. I think it can be done with Rafa learning more and more about the squad and who to count on.

Ibiza has promised to disguise himself as Rafa and parade aboot the beaches of the Golden Isle singing Auld Lang Syne and doing some break dancing if we win. I’m psyched for that!!!!

With Rafa in charge, he’ll take us into the champions league. Mark my word.

Let’s wind the clock back and pretend we’re playing Southampton in the 70s. We were always guaranteed a bag-full – especially when we had em at SJP. Oh happy days.

Can someone please weave some magic to turn the clock back this weekend?

Southampton have only lost just once in their last 7 home league games. That was against Chelsea.

I don’t think an early goal, or 2 would do it. Southampton’s last 2 home games they:

    * Drew with Sunderland coming from 1-0 down.
    * Won against Liverpool from 2-0 down.

We’re going to go on a winning run, starting with Southampton this weekend, and will garner enough points to survive. It’s 1.46am … am I dreaming?

It is a fault of management also for there position. Not all wheels run smoothly, Mclaren was out of his depth really. Soul of know this with Derby. He is overated. He was not a tactition; a bit like Carver. Bennit can see a problem and fix it. With 7 games to go; it will not be his fault if they default. Mags always win a eloof trophyy; ha, in the Champlonship. Bennit will read the riot act now. Footballers are simple, and they like the toon love grog. Now for the rest of the campaign, Bennit should tell them to lay off the nest; and the spirits that will dampen there spirits on the pitch. Only one solitary day before the game stay fit and boot the Wife out of bed. Last thing. Armstrong has to come back. He could save us a Geordie hero.

Player we should re-sign for next year is not Abeid, but Tavernier. Goal scoring full back with more courage than Debuchy and Janmaat together.

Some blue sky thinking from Ed there. I think the reality will be somewhat different!
